Kuigi naiste õigustest räägitakse aina rohkem, polnud 2024. aasta üleilmsed arengud selles vallas sugugi nii eesrindlikud. Näiteks toob Equal Measures 2030 välja, et 2019-2022 tegid ligi 40% riikidest soolises võrdõiguslikkuses taandarengu või stagneerusid selles vallas. Ka möödunud aasta jooksul toimus mitmeid poliitilisi arenguid naiste õiguste vallas. Naistepäevale pühendatud saates tuleb juttu naiste õiguste arengutest kodus ja võõrsil, muuhulgas vaadeldakse sellealast olukorda Iraagis, Afganistanis ning USAs. Samuti tuleb juttu naistevastaste narratiivide mõjust USA ja Venemaa poliitilisel areenil. Saates arutlevad Patricia ja Annabel, saatejuht on Aet. Episoodi lõikas kokku Annmari.Head kuulamist!

In the first mini-series of Good with data we explore one of the most important issues in global development today, the Leave No One Behind Agenda; what it means, why it matters, and how we can make it a reality by improving data and making best use of existing data and evidence. After concluding our three-part mini-series on the Leave No One Behind Agenda, our colleagues at Paris 21 got in touch and suggested we apply our data and data systems thinking to one of the oldest and most pervasive inequalities around the world – gender inequality. We thought that was a great idea, so they joined us for a bonus episode exploring this issue and the data and analysis needed to ensure that no women and girls are left behind. Our guests are: Fridah Githuku, Executive Director of GROOTS, a national movement of grassroots women-led community-based groups and Self Help Groups in Kenya.Emma Phiri, Gender Specialist at the Zambia Statistics Agency, a statutory body responsible for the publication of official statistics.Lauren Harrison, Data Ecosystems Lead at Paris 21, an organisation hosted which promotes the better use and production of statistics to achieve national and international development goals. For more on the subject of inequality including with respect to gender, our briefing paper explores the relationship between inequality and poverty and some key indicators and associated data issues. An accompanying factsheet draws on this data to summarise recent global inequality trends. Lastly, this report gives an overview of funding for gender equality and women and girls in humanitarian crises.During the episode, we asked our panellists to share their recommendations for listeners to explore issues relating to gender inequality further:Fridah recommended publications from UN Women's Women Count programme; GROOTS Kenya's Gender Data Dashboard; Equal Measures 2030's SDG Gender Index; and Paris 21's work with national statistical offices.Lauren recommended exploring the Clearinghouse for Financing Development Data which includes information on funding for gender statistics, and the Gender Data Network.Good with data is a production of Development Initiatives, a global organisation harnessing the power of data and evidence to end poverty, reduce inequality and increase resilience. To stay up to date with our work, follow us on Twitter or Linkedin, visit our website, and register for email updates. We value your feedback! "Friars, Matriarchs, Tres de Abril, and the Virgin Mary" BLAST FROM THE PAST (feat. Amiel "Cortz" Cortes) An Excerpt: Season 1, Episode 02, Rated-PG13 "Lay Back" | Music by Brian Withycombe SPONSORED BY: Studio Historias, Broadcasting & Multimedia Productions https://show.studiohistorias.com AMIEL "Cortz" CORTES is a Cebu-based Historical Researcher & Consultant. He graduated with a degree in AB History at the University of San Carlos, Philippines in 2015, and worked as a Program Officer for Research at the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation where he contributed as a Principal Researcher, Indexer, Editorial Assistant, and Field Researcher for various local and regional events, exhibits, academic publications, and projects. THE VIRGIN MARY SYMBOLISM. In 1986, it was believed that the Lady of Fátima—the Catholic title of Mary that's based on the Marian apparitions of three shepherd children at Fátima, Portugal in 1917—"miraculously mediated" a peaceful revolution against former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Sr, where demonstrators largely consisted of Roman Catholic nuns who offered flowers to soldiers while praying the rosary. Two years later, a "Holy Ground" marker known as the EDSA Shrine was built as an act of thanksgiving to the Virgin Mary. In 2019, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Philippines declared the church as an "Important Cultural Property". PHILIPPINES, A MATRIARCHAL NATION. Stemming from pre-colonial social structures, the Philippines already allowed equal importance among kinships, where women inherited property, commanded as religious leaders, composed the military forces, and led villages in the absence of a male heir. Today, Filipino women still contribute to the decision-making process within families, businesses, and the country. The Philippines currently ranks 7th in the Gender-Equality List for Southeast and East Asia in the 2022 SDG Gender Index by Equal Measures 2030, with an overall score of 69.8 just after Malaysia and Thailand. THE MANILA GALLEON. For two and a half centuries, Spanish trading ships sailed between Acapulco and Manila that brought cargoes of luxury items such as tobacco, spices, and porcelain to the Americas. During the Spanish empire, priests and missionaries were mobile. And also aboard the galleons were deportees, prisoners, exiles, and among other undesirables from the colonies; making a diverse variety of crewmen traveling between Spain, Peru, and the Philippines. THE BATTLE OF TRES DE ABRIL. In March 1898, Filipino revolutionary leader Lt.-Gen. Pantaleón "León Kilat" Villegas agreed to revolt against the Spaniards with the Cebuano Katipuneros (KKK); plotted on April 10th, an Easter Sunday. After the Spaniards caught wind of the scheduled rebellion, armed with bolos (machete) and some guns, 6,000 revolutionists fought a week earlier on Palm Sunday, April 3rd, and won; now known as the 'Battle of Tres de Abril'. Indonesia has the eighth highest number of child marriages in the world. Beyond being a human rights issue, child marriage significantly increases the chance of domestic violence, dropping out of school, and poverty. Misiyah Misiyah, founder and director of feminist organization Institut KAPAL Perempuan, wanted to convince Indonesian President Joko Widodo to increase the legal marriage age from 16 to 19, which could dramatically decrease the rate of child marriage. To do that, she and her colleagues came equipped with reams of data.On the season finale of the Hidden Economics of Remarkable Women, we hear how Misiyah collected grassroots data and used it to build a powerful case to ban child marriage in Indonesia. Later in the episode, host Reena Ninan speaks with Mabel van Oranje, founder of Girls Not Brides and VOW for Girls, about the most effective ways to decrease child marriage globally.Special thanks this week to Alison Holder from Equal Measures 2030, who recommended we talk to Misiyah. You should check out their latest report on countries' progress toward gender equality and sustainable development goals; it's pretty sobering.
