We sat down with Olympic medalist, Speedo Athlete, and openly gay swimmer Erica Sullivan. In honor of pride month, Sullivan delves into her story of finding her identity as a human and athlete. Sullivan is open and honest about her experiences and advises others with similar struggles to do the same, noting that not living authentically makes the journey of self-discovery even harder. We also discuss Sullivan's training leading up to the 2023 US World Champ team trials, including what a Texas taper looks like for the distance ace.
In honor of Women's History Month, Olympians and Speedo Athletes Abbey Weitzeil and Erica Sullivan sat down to discuss being a woman in swimming. This included balancing femininity with being an athlete, training with men vs training with women, and how they lean on their support systems in and out of the pool.
The women's 1650 free race at NCAAs later this week is going to look real slow, because Katie Ledecky just went a 15:01.41 in the event to break the US Open and American record at the 2023 Florida Swimming Spring Senior Champs. Ledecky broke her own record time of 15:03.31, which set in November 2017 at the Art Adamson Invite when she was still swimming collegiately for Stanford. Ledecky finished her race over a minute ahead of Florida swimmer Caroline Pennington, who finished in second with a time of 16:08.78. Keep in mind, Pennington is the 2022 Pac-12 champion in the 1650 free and her time would have qualified for NCAAs this year, and she still lost to Ledecky by a minute and seven seconds. Now, Ledecky holds seven of the top times in the history of the 1650 free and is over 22 seconds faster than Erica Sullivan, who is the second-fastest performance of all-time in the event and holds a personal best of 15:23.81.

2020 Olympic silver medalist and Team Speedo athlete Erica Sullivan injured her shoulder, which is why she missed the U.S. International Team Trials. However, in this podcast she confirmed she is fully back to good health. She said "I'm in the weight room," and she did snap a gold (1500 free) and a silver (800 free) at the recent Mission Pro Swim. We cover a lot ground in the pod, from training to film school to Pride Month. Erica joked she's not a Pride Month parade type person, explaining that it's a little too hot to be outside in Austin, Texas. (SwimSwam HQ is in Austin, and it's over a 100 degrees this entire week!) Erica's Pride Month support is live and active on GoFundMe supporting Out Youth Austin. (Out Youth Austin is a 501(c)(3) who's mission is to promote the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of sexual minority youth in Central Texas so they can openly and safely explore and affirm their identities.) Hope is joined by Olympic Silver medalist and University of Texas women's swimmer Erica Sullivan who recently placed third against Lia Thomas, a transgender athlete, in the 500 freestyle at the 2022 Women's NCAA Championships. Although Lia has received a ton of backlash, Erica expresses her support for Lia's journey and shares her own story as an LGBTQ athlete on this week's edition of Hope Solo Speaks.
Erica Sullivan discusses her path to entrepreneurship and how she knew she wanted to create social impact and community before she even knew she wanted to build a brand and business. Erica was first touched by cancer when her mom was diagnosed with melanoma but it was her own scare that led to her creating lasting change. With an entrepreneur's mind, a heart for others and some tough love from her now husband, Erica pitched her business idea to the APEX Center for Entrepreneurs and WON, launching her dream of a sun protective clothing line that educates, advocates and prevents skin cancer. Swimmer Erica Sullivan made a splash with an epic performance in the pool at the Tokyo Olympics where she won the silver medal in the 1500-meter freestyle during its first year featured for women's swimming. Now, the University of Texas freshman joins the Pod to talk about her love of long-distance swimming, mental health, and her future in film.
Erica Sullivan medaled at the olympics just weeks before turning 21 and moving into her college dorm. Needless to say, her 2021 was an eventful year. Although the American flag has become a symbol of racism, divisiveness, and hate to many, Erica feels like she represents the epitome of the American person and seeks to reclaim pride in our flag and country. As a queer, Japannese American woman, Erica reflects what our true America looks like. We sat down with Erica Sullivan, the 1500 Olympic silver medalist and recently appointed "New Lesbian Supreme". Erica walks us through her summer, starting at the Olympic Trials where she was experiencing stress to the point of having trouble eating or sleeping. Even after making the Olympic team in the 1500, Sullivan admits it felt empty and unlike what she had expected this lifelong dream to be like. After battling illness post-trials and getting back into the swing of things at training camp, Sullivan then takes us through her Olympic experience, which she describes as much more fulfilling. She was able to relax more, sleep better, and perform the way she wanted (minus getting a toe cramp behind the blocks during the 1500 final). Finally, she delves into the recognition she got once she had her press conference and showed the world the authentic personality that she had stayed true to for so many years. Jeff Heggie Daily Success Strategies 336: Pay Attention to the Small Things https://jeffheggie.com/2021/07/29/pay-attention-to-the-small-things/ https://jeffheggie.com/ConfidentAthlete https://mindset.jeffheggie.com/ I have been watching Katie Ledecky all week as everything built up to her premier event, which is finally an Olympic event for the women, the 1500-meter freestyle. This is a long race of endurance and stamina. Ledecky was by far the favorite to win the gold in this event. Ledecky broke the World Record in this event in June 2014. Since then, she has broken her own World Record four more times! On Tuesday, as expected, she took a commanding lead and maintained it throughout the entire 1500m. She swam strong and nobody was surprised that she won the Gold Medal in this event. Ledecky was ecstatic that her teammate, Erica Sullivan, won silver. What I find interesting is that her dominant performance was only a little over 4-seconds faster than second place. Ledecky finished in 15:37.34, while Sullivanfinished in 15:41.41. As she powered through the water for over 15 minutes, one small mistake could have changed everything. What is it that we can learn from this? Earlier in the week I listened to an interview with Ledecky where she said, “you can look at all the stats, but when I have confidence that's all that matters.” When she was asked what was different since the last Olympics she said, “I'm five years older and have five years more experience.” Michael Phelps said, “she wears the crown and target. She has to do what she knows what to do.” If you want to be the best at anything that you do, pay attention to the small things! Ledecky has trained hard for years and years. To get to the level she is at she has had to focus on every area of her life from the physical training, mental training, nutrition, and so much more. But when the difference between the best in the world and second place is only four seconds over a 1500m swim, the small things make a difference. You may not be an Olympic athlete, but it's no different for you. The small, seemingly insignificant success habits that you do day in, day out can be what really separates you from your competition. These are the things that are easy to do, but they are also easy not to do. Write out your goals every day. Easy to do, easy not to do. Go through your Mindset Questions every day. Easy to do, easy not to do. Look in the mirror. Are you doing the things every day that are getting you closer to your bigger goals? Or did you write out your goals every morning for a week but quit because nothing had happened yet?
MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 6, Minnesota Twins 5 – F/11 Innings Chicago White Sox 5, Kansas City Royals 3 Cincinnati Reds 7, Chicago Cubs 4 Tigers 6, Twins 5 – F/11 – Cabrera, Haase power Tigers past Twins 6-5 in 11th innings Miguel Cabrera hit a run-scoring single in the 11th inning after Eric Haase tied the game with a grand slam in the top of the ninth as the Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 6-5. Cabrera’s hit scored automatic runner Jonathan Schoop. The Tigers tied the game with a homer in the ninth inning for the second straight game. Robbie Grossman, who singled to start the ninth-inning comeback, hit a two-run homer on Monday night before Minnesota won 6-5 in 10 innings. Mitch Garver hit a first-inning grand slam for the Twins. White Sox 5, Royals 3 – Jiménez hits 3-run HR, rallies White Sox past Royals 5-3 Eloy Jiménez logged his first big hit of the season, launching a go-ahead, three-run homer in the eighth inning that sent the Chicago White Sox over the Kansas City Royals 5-3. The 24-year-old slugger, who was the 2019 AL Rookie of the Year and then kept up his power surge during the pandemic-shortened season, tore a pectoral muscle in spring training. He hadn’t played in the majors until going 0 for 4 Monday night. But Jiménez quickly made up for lost time in his second game. After hitting a single in his first at-bat, he came up in the eighth after a two-out intentional walk to Jose Abreu with Chicago trailing 3-2. Jiménez connected for a 459-foot drive to cap a four-run rally for the AL Central leaders. Reds 7, Cubs 4 – Votto hits 2 more homers as Reds roll past Cubs 7-4 Joey Votto continued his power surge with two home runs and started a dazzling double play as the Cincinnati Reds pulled away to a 7-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Votto has homered in a career-high four consecutive games for the second time, one game shy of the team record. The Reds hit four home runs in winning for the third time in five games. The Cubs lost for the sixth time in their last 10. Cincinnati rookie Vladimir Gutierrez pitched 6 1/3 innings of five-hit ball to earn the win. Cubs starter Adbert Alzolay allowed three home runs in five innings. Tonight Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins, 1:10 p.m. 94.9 WSJM/103.7 Cosy-FM 12:50 Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs, 8:05 p.m. Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals, 8:10 p.m. NHL – Vegas trades Fleury to Chicago as goalie carousel spins, get Johnson from champs The Vegas Golden Knights have traded reigning Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to the Chicago Blackhawks. Vegas got minor leaguer Mikael Hakkarainen in return, indicating the move was a salary dump. Fleury counts $7 million against the salary cap next season. Chicago was not on the 36-year-old’s 10-team no-trade list. Agent Allan Walsh says Fleury will be taking time to talk to his family and evaluate his hockey future. Chicago wasn’t done there, the Blackhawks also acquired forward Tyler Johnson from the Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for the contract of injured Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook. The move by Tampa takes Johnson $5-million contract off the salary cap. Seabrook announced his retirement during the past season citing injury, he is listed on long term injured reserve and his contract does not count in the salary cap calculations. Seabrook had 3 years left on his contract and will make $6.875 million each year. The trade also sent a 2023 second round pick from Tampa Bay to Chicago. NCAAFB – Big 12′s Texas, Oklahoma make request to join powerhouse SEC Texas and Oklahoma have made a request to join the powerhouse Southeastern Conference. A day after the Big 12 schools notified the league that they would not be extending an agreement that binds conference members to 2025, the schools publicly stated for the first time they want to join the SEC. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey says his league will consider the request in the “near future.” The SEC would grow to 16 teams with the additions of Texas and Oklahoma, half of which have won at least one national championship in football since 1980. NFL – Bears’ QB balancing act begins with training camp The balancing act for Matt Nagy has begun. The Chicago Bears coach made it clear as players reported Tuesday for training camp why the team is starting veteran quarterback Andy Dalton first before it turns to rookie first-round pick Justin Fields. The season amounts to weighing how much Dalton can win against the potential problems associated with starting a developing rookie like Fields. Nagy realizes the excitement building throughout Chicago to see Fields play, but for training camp, preseason and at least the first game, the Bears know Dalton is the starter. NFL – Rodgers arrives in Green Bay for start of training camp Aaron Rodgers has made it to Green Bay on the eve of the Packers’ first training-camp workout. Rodgers was seen arriving at Lambeau Field on Tuesday morning, the day after NFL Network and ESPN had reported the reigning MVP was closing in on a deal that would keep him with the Packers this season. The Packers open training camp Wednesday. Rodgers hadn’t participated in organized team activities this spring and skipped the Packers’ mandatory minicamp. His return makes the Packers legitimate Super Bowl contenders. NFL – Rivera opens Washington camp frustrated by vaccine hesitancy Ron Rivera opened Washington’s training camp expressing frustration about a lack of vaccinations among players. Rivera says he believes Washington is now over 50% of players fully vaccinated. Only five NFL teams are at less than 70% of players who have either received one vaccination shot or both. The low vaccination rate is one of many questions facing Washington going into camp. It has caused Rivera to wear a mask around unvaccinated players because he says he is immune deficient. Rivera was treated for a form of skin cancer last year. Offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas was placed on the NFL’s COVID-19 reserve list Tuesday. NBA – The play-in tournament officially returning to NBA in 2022 The NBA’s play-in tournament is back for at least one more season. As expected, the league’s board of governors gave approval Tuesday to the plan that would bring back the event in April 2022. The format will be the same as it was this past season: the teams that finish seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th in each conference will play to determine the No. 7 and No. 8 playoff seeds. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had said on multiple occasions in recent weeks that he expected the play-in to return. It was utilized this past season for the first time on an experimental basis. NBA – Former President Obama buys stake in NBA’s Africa business Former U.S. President Barack Obama has bought a stake in the NBA’s Africa business through his foundation. The NBA says Obama will have a minority equity stake in NBA Africa, a new entity set up this year to run all the league’s business on the continent. The NBA adds Obama will use any profits to fund the Obama Foundation’s youth and leadership programs in Africa. Obama has been linked to the NBA’s Africa operations since 2019 but it wasn’t clear until Tuesday’s announcement exactly what his involvement would be. NBA Africa and world body FIBA have combined to set up the first pro basketball league in Africa. It held its inaugural season in May. HSFB – Georgia 15-year-old collapses, dies after football practice A 15-year-old high school football player died after collapsing at the first day of practice amid 97-degree temperatures in middle Georgia. Bibb County school district officials say Joshua Ivory of Macon’s Southwest High School went into distress Monday, leading coaches to call an ambulance. He later died at a hospital. No cause of death has been announced and an autopsy is planned. MILB – Minor League Baseball – High-A Central Yesterday West Michigan Whitecaps 6, Great Lakes Loons 3 Fort Wayne Tin Caps 3, Lansing Lugnuts 1 Quad Cities River Bandits 4, South Bend Cubs 2 Tonight West Michigan Whitecaps at Great Lakes Loons, 7:05 p.m. Fort Wayne Tin Caps at Lansing Lugnuts, 7:05 p.m. South Bend Cubs at Quad Cities River Bandits, 7:30 p.m. Tokyo 2020 – Summer Olympic Games – Games of the XXXII Olympiad Volleyball – US beats Tunisia 3-1 in men’s volleyball The U.S. men’s volleyball team has improved to 2-1 in pool play at the Olympics by beating Tunisia 3-1. The Americans bounced back from a loss to the Russians on Wednesday. They knocked off the lowest-ranked team in their group 25-14, 23-25, 25-14, 25-23. The victory keeps the U.S. in good position to advance to the quarterfinals as one of the top four teams in Pool B. Tunisia has lost all three matches so far in Tokyo. Beach Volleyball – US men, women both win in beach volleyball prelims Americans April Ross and Alix Klineman have guaranteed themselves at least one more beach volleyball match at the Tokyo Olympics. U.S. men Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena helped their chances of making the knockout round as well. The U.S. women beat Spain 21-13, 21-16 for their second straight win. They can do no worse than a three-way tie for first. Dalhausser and Lucena improved to 1-1 in the round robin by beating Brazil’s Alison, the reigning gold medalist, and Alvaro Filho, 24-22, 19-21, 15-13. The Americans will meet Argentina on Thursday. Gymnastics – Russian team topples American powerhouse with Biles out Though the history books may mark Tuesday’s victory with an asterisk due to American star Simone Biles’ early withdrawal, the Russian women’s gymnastics team’s dazzling performance is the result of a concerted transformation since they finished a distant second to the American team at the 2019 World Championship. They beat the Americans by nearly 3.5 points, a significant margin in the sport. Their victory came just a day after the Russian men also won. The country swept the gymnastics team gold medals, among the most coveted at the summer Games. Biles has also withdrawn from the individual all-around competition. Swimming – "Just proud": Ledecky finally wins gold at Tokyo Olympics Finally, a gold medal in Tokyo for Katie Ledecky. The American star bounced back from the worst finish of her brilliant Olympic career to take the first-ever gold medal in the women’s 1,500-meter freestyle. It wasn’t quite the breeze everyone expected in the metric mile. Ledecky built a big lead right from the start, then worked hard to hold off American teammate Erica Sullivan’s blazing finish. But it was Ledecky touching first in 15 minutes, 37.39 seconds. Sullivan claimed the silver, while the bronze went to Germany’s Sarah Kohler. Ledecky bounced back from a fifth-place showing in the 200 free. Softball – Japan beats US 2-0, turns incredible DP to win softball gold Japan won its second straight Olympic softball gold medal, beating the United States 2-0 in an emotional repeat of their 2008 victory in Beijing that again left the Americans in tears. Yukiko Ueno took a one-hitter into the sixth inning five days after her 39th birthday, and Japan snuffed out an American rally attempt with an acrobatic double play in the sixth inning. Mana Atsumi, the No. 9 batter, had a run-scoring infield hit in the fourth inning and Yamato Fujita lined an RBI single off Abbott in the fifth. Softball will not return to the Olympics until at least 2028. NBC’s Tokyo Olympics viewership gets off to rough start NBC Universal is still waiting to see if there will be a surge of interest in viewership for the Tokyo Summer Olympics. During each of the first three nights of coverage, viewership was down more than 30 percent compared to corresponding nights at the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016. NBC’s audience this year was its largest on Sunday night, but that still represented a 43 percent drop from five years ago. Viewing habits for live television have changed dramatically in the past five years, so it’s difficult to determine how much NBC’s Olympics slump has to do with that, and how much with the underwhelming performance in Tokyo.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Bursting onto the scene, Erica Sullivan makes her appearance on The Social Kick. Erica is a 20-year-old long distance pool and open water swimmer from Las Vegas. Newly selected to represent Team USA in the 1500m, Erica claimed her ticket in a brilliant trials swim, coming in second to Katie Ledecky and holding off Sandpipers teammate Katie Grimes. Selected for her first Olympic Games during Pride Month and with the games taking place in Tokyo, Erica opens up about her position of representation being both gay and of Japanese descent. Proud of who she is and unapologetically witty and charismatic, our conversation touches on the importance of representation, not just in swimming but all over the world. One of the fastest up and coming US distance swimmers, we talk to Erica about what it's like training open water in Nevada, her difficulties and advice with mental health as an athlete and her love of film (watch out Oscars)! A joy to speak to and get to know, Erica Sullivan is undoubtably making waves both in and out of the water. Enjoy! Endurance News: USA TRIATHLON ANNOUNCES 2020 U.S. OLYMPIC TRIATHLON TEAM USA Triathlon today announced its 2020 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team, comprised of the five athletes who will represent the United States in triathlon competition at this summer's Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Kevin McDowell (Geneva, Ill.) and Katie Zaferes (Cary, N.C.) were newly announced to the roster, joining Summer Rappaport (Thornton, Colo.), Taylor Knibb (Washington, D.C.) and Morgan Pearson (Boulder, Colo.), who were already qualified. The five members of the Tokyo-bound team have a wealth of experience and success on the international race circuit, with a combined 32 World Triathlon Championship Series medals, 30 World Triathlon Cup medals and 12 World Triathlon Mixed Relay Series medals between them. The road to Tokyo 2020 For the first time in history, our triathletes will compete across three medal events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The long journey to be among those chosen to compete for Olympic glory begins in Japan this weekend, at the 2018 ITU World Triathlon Yokohama. In just over two years' time, 55 men and 55 women be going for Olympic gold in the individual events and then again in country-based teams of four in the Mixed Relay. The qualification period starts on 11 May 2018, and will finish the very same day in 2020. “Tokyo is going to be an extremely important event not only for the International Triathlon Union, but also for the history of our sport and for the athletes competing there”, said ITU President and IOC member, Marisol Casado. “The Olympic Games is the pinnacle of the sport, and to give our athletes the opportunity to earn two medals in the same Games is something of which we should all be very proud. With male and female athletes competing together as a team we will show the world just how committed triathlon is to gender equality, and how our athletes can shine and perform under any circumstances, both individually and as a team”, she said. “For this Qualification period, the key for the National Federations will be to find the balance in the focus of the individual and mixed relay participation in the next two years. It will require a real team effort from all the Federations”, explained Gergely Markus, ITU Sports Director. There will be various ways to qualify for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and earn one of the 55 spots available. As a new addition to the previous qualification criteria, there will be Mixed Relay events counting towards the qualification. The top seven countries on the Mixed Relay Olympic Qualification Ranking as of March 31, 2020, will secure two men's and two women's quota places each. Three further countries will be awarded two men's and two women's places at a qualification event for the top 18-ranked countries (not including those already qualified) to be held between 1 April and 11 May, 2020. Our Olympic Games hosts Japan are already guaranteed their four places in the Mixed Relay. Via these three methods, 22 places will have been secured, with a further 26 places then available through the Individual Olympic Qualification Ranking. For those countries with 2-2 places already secured by any of the previous qualification pathways, the top 2 athletes in both genders will not be considered in this ranking. Countries with three or more athletes among the top 30 of this ranking will be able to secure a third quota place, otherwise there will be a maximum two per country. The overall Olympic eligibility criteria for any athlete will be finishing in the top 140 of the Individual Olympic Qualification Ranking. The “new flag” rule will be applied again for the qualification for Tokyo 2020. The countries that will be eligible for those places will be the ones which athletes' are at the best ranking position from the continent on the ITU World Ranking from those countries which didn't secure any place by any means of the above. Last but not least, a maximum of two invitations will be awarded to countries entitled to receive such places and with eligible athletes according to the IOC criteria and who are represented in the top 180 of the ITU World Ranking. It is important to remember that quota places will be earned by the countries, not the individuals. It remains the decision of each National Olympic Committee which athletes are chosen to take them. Athletes will not have to compete in the individual events of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to be part of the team of the Mixed Relay event, but their country's quota would not be increased in such cases. U.S. Olympic Trials: Katie Ledecky wins 200, 1500 meter freestyle titles Katie Ledecky secured two Olympic bids on Wednesday at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb., winning the 200-meter freestyle and cruising in the 1,500-meter freestyle to qualify in those events for for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. At a time when the language of diplomacy has been reduced to a 140-character tweet transmitted at 3 am, it’s good to be reminded of the men and women for whom the quest for peace demanded actual thought and personal interaction. J. T. Rogers’ Oslo, now running in its West Coast premiere at the Marin Theatre Company through October 28, is a look at the circumstances and personalities responsible for the Oslo Accords. The 1993 Accords, considered to be a breakthrough in the search for Middle Eastern peace, brought about Israeli acceptance of the Palestinian Liberation Organization as official representatives of the Palestinian people and the PLO’s recognition of the state of Israel. Norwegians Terje Rod-Larsen (Mark Anderson Phillips) and Mona Juul (Erica Sullivan) are a well-connected husband and wife. He runs a think tank in Oslo; she is an official in the Foreign Ministry. They are the unlikely leaders of a plan to try a “gradualist” approach in middle east diplomacy. Issues would be dealt with one at a time, from the smallest to the largest, and they would be resolved person-to-person, not nation-to-nation. As it was the official stance of both parties to never deal directly with each other, this had to be accomplished through secret, back-channels. Those channels, though far from Washington, D.C., led to that moment on the White House South Lawn when Israeli Prime Minister Rabin shook the hand of PLO chairman Arafat. Rogers’ play takes the same approach as the negotiations. We get to gradually know the individuals involved. As they become better acquainted, we become better acquainted. As the process evolves, the audience evolves with it to the point where you would swear you were in the room with them. Director Jasson Minadakis has gathered a terrific ensemble to tell this riveting story. It’s an exceptional cast of fourteen players. Sullivan’s Juul acts as the narrator, providing context and humor and facilitating the initial connection between the audience and the play. Phillips is magnificent as the part strutting peacock, part heartfelt peacemaker Rod-Larsen. His alcohol-fueled takedown at one point in the negotiations by the participants was wrenching. J. Paul Nicholas and Ashkan Davaran as the PLO representatives and Brian Herndon and Ryan Tasker as the initial Israeli contacts are excellent as the across-the-table enemies who soon develop a friendship. While a true peace remains elusive, and regardless of how much of this dramatization is actually factual, Oslo reminds us that when humanity is allowed to enter a political process, there’s still hope. ‘Oslo’ runs through October 28 at Marin Theatre Company in Mill Valley. Tuesday through Saturday evening performances are at 7:30pm. The Sunday matinee is at 2pm. For more information, go to marintheatre.org.
Erica Sullivan shares her neighborhood story at a place conversation hosted by Intersection: Prospect Heights at the Central Library on October 7th, 2015.
