"You can't redead the dead by you saying something shit," says Cariad Lloyd of Griefcast and author of You Are Not Alone; nevertheless when you're bereaved, people still are usually so nervous to say the wrong thing that they often don't say anything at all. And especially not the word 'dead'. Maybe what we need, says council funeral officer Evie King, author of Ashes To Admin, is a "jazzy snazzy term for death, the 'bottomless brunch' of death..." Content warning: this episode is about death*. And it contains mentions of cancer and Parkinson's, and there are several category B swears and one category A swear. *But it's a pretty fun listen, it doesn't get sad. We're full of life advice in this week's podzine. First up, Mick chats to Helen Wills, mum of teenagers and host of the Teenage Kicks podcast, about navigating the teenage years as a parent, letting go of control, and what we can learn from the adolescents in our lives. If you've ever wondered what happens if someone dies without family or money to deal with the aftermath, Evie King has written a book about exactly this, Ashes to Admin: Takes from the Caseload of a Council Funeral Officer. She chats to Hannah about the practicalities of planning a funeral and why it's good to keep death at the back of our mind.In Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen's chatting equal prize money, stupid stories, and alpine excellence, and for god's sake don't say his name three times – we're watching 1988's Beetlejuice in Rated or Dated.Meanwhile there's #Patygate, policing, and period pains in the Bush Telegraph – but does it taste of metal?Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. RHLSTP Book Club 45 - Ashes to Admin. Richard talks to Evie King (if that is her real name) about her new book about her council job of organising funerals for people who don't have the means to pay for them. It's a surprisingly affecting story about a woman doing a job you've never thought about, much more fastidiously and empathetically than is required and a celebration of life and a treatise on death, as well as being full of intrigue, mystery and humour. They discuss why murderers haven't thought it through, how even those who have done bad things deserve a dignified send off, why you need a strong stomach for this job and how your life can be affected and changed by someone who you never met, who is no longer alive. It's a strong recommend for this excellent book which hopefully will one day be a TV series. But who will play Evie? And who will play the dead suspected paedo? (Yeah, the second question is easier to answer than the first).https://www.lovereading.co.uk/book/9781915306302/isbn/Ashes-To-Admin-Tales-from-the-Caseload-of-a-Council-Funeral-Officer-by-Evie-King.htmlSUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELSee extra content at our WEBSITE Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp.
