Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/666 Presented By: TroutRoutes, Waters West, Togens Fly Shop, Stonefly Nets Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors In this episode, Joe Rist and I will journey to fly fishing the Catskills, often hailed as the birthplace of American fly fishing. Join us as we uncover the rich history of this iconic region, explore the streams of the Beaver Kill and the Delaware branches, and discover why this area holds such a special place in the hearts of anglers. With Joe's expert insights, you'll learn valuable tips on dry fly fishing and perfecting your casting techniques. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a curious novice, this episode promises to deepen your appreciation for fly fishing in one of the most storied landscapes in the U.S. Episode Chapters with Joe Rist on Fly Fishing the Catskills 1:54 - We explore Joe's journey into fly fishing, sparked by his father's introduction with basic fishing gear. His passion solidified after catching his first brook trout in Maine and starting "Fish Camp" with friends. Joe transitioned to guiding professionally after retiring from the post office at 55. Following the passing of the shop's owner, Joe, with no retail experience but support from his family, successfully opened Trout Town Flies, now in its fifth year. 7:48 - We talk about the history of fly fishing in the Catskill region. Joe highlights its significance as "holy waters," noting contributions from pioneers like Theodore Gordon and George La Branche. The Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum, covering 50 acres, showcases important figures and artifacts in fly fishing, including the resurgence of interest among younger people during the Covid pandemic. 11:12 - Joe offers advice on the best fishing times in the Catskills, recommending May for dry fly fishing due to ideal temperatures. He suggests novice-friendly rivers like Beaver Kill and Willow, while recommending the East and West Branches of the Delaware River for experienced anglers. 16:22 - For lodging and camping, Joe explains that while there is ample lodging, prime time (late April to early June) requires early reservations starting in December or January. The area has modest accommodations catering to fishermen, including notable places like Roscoe Motel, Riverside Cafe & Lodge, Red Rose, and Rockland House. For DIY camping, there are several state campgrounds, including Butternut Grove, Roscoe Campsite Park, and Peaceful Valley on the Delaware. 18:50 - Joe reveals that his shop makes 60-70% of its flies in-house. He highlights the significance of tying flies like cripples and emergers, as well as traditional Catskill flies. He also recounts creating the brown floating nymph (BFN) after noticing fish feeding on a specific insect on the West Branch of the Delaware. 25:29 - We get into the other flies he uses in the Catskills. Joe uses the gray fox, cahill, and red quill, effectively on their rivers. He provides a tip for modifying a red quill to mimic a rusty spinner. 28:35 - We focus on fishing the Beaver Kill. Joe notes that the Beaver Kill is more accessible for novice fly fishermen due to its high gradient, which helps correct casting errors. He also mentions that it is stocked with brown trout by the New York State. 32:06 - Our conversation shifts to fishing techniques, where Joe explains the importance of positioning above the fish and allowing the current to deliver the fly naturally. He mentions that in the east, anglers need to feed a lot of line—sometimes 70 to 80 feet—to achieve this, which can be challenging but necessary for successful fishing. 33:24 - Joe elaborates on fishing in the Delaware system, highlighting the commonality of catching large fish, including 21-27 inch fish. He explains the strength and resilience of these fish, particularly due to the cold, fast-moving waters. He also mentions migratory fish like shad and stripers that enter the Delaware system, and the presence of smallmouth bass in areas like the Beaver Kill. He notes that while there are various fish species, anglers predominantly seek large rainbows and browns. 38:05 - We talk about the fishing regulations and conditions in New York. Joe explains that the fishing season runs year-round, with specific rules: from April 1st to October 15th, regular fishing with size and catch limits is allowed; from October 16th to March 31st, it's catch and release only, with no live bait. 39:33 - Joe mentions temperature inversions in the Delaware River's tail waters, which affect fishing conditions. Milder winters have led to earlier fishing and hatches, with some species appearing sooner. He highlights that the tail waters offer consistent fishing opportunities, even in warmer months, and details the fishable waters: 17 miles on the west branch and variable conditions on the east branch. 42:03 - Joe describes their guiding and fishing techniques in the Catskills. 46:16 - For new anglers fishing the west branch of a large river, Joe emphasizes the importance of patience and observation when approaching the water. He advises beginners to look for foam lines, which indicate where food and fish might be. He also suggests breaking the river down into smaller sections, treating it first as a brook, then a stream, to make it less intimidating. He also highlights the need to adjust fishing techniques based on the time of day and hatches. Joe mentions that his shop can help plan trips and tailor them to the angler's schedule, whether it involves fishing in the morning or evening. 51:19 - We ask about his essential fishing gear. Joe highlights the use of fish-friendly ghost nets, wading staff for stability, quality wading boots for ankle support, and wading belt for safety. He also favors traditional vests for storage and versatility. 53:19 - As we approach late September and early October, he mentions the pre-spawn period when aggressive male trout favor streamers in orange or yellow. He mentions the essential flies during this period. 57:42 - Joe shares his travel bucket list, including a planned trip to Chile with his daughter to potentially represent a lodge there. He also expresses interest in fishing in Alaska and Montana's grayling, despite past trips to Colorado, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. 59:18 - We discuss various boats and flotation devices for the Delaware River, including traditional boats, rafts, kayaks, and paddleboards. Joe warns against belly boats due to safety concerns and praises drift boats for their ability to navigate shallow waters. 1:00:38 - We ask him a couple of random questions on his music preference and go-to bar and restaurants in their area. For music, he likes the Allman Brothers, Coldplay, and Marshall Tucker. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/666

Angela Gonzalez is an artist and a writer, and through her beadwork, her blog — the Athabascan Woman Blog — and the Fish Camp Barbie dioramas she creates, she shares her heritage. She says that it's all a reflection of the way she grew up. Fish camp was a big part of that. As a kid, that's where she spent most of her summers, about 16 miles from her home in Huslia, along the Koyukuk River. While the adults were harvesting the fish, her grandma would put Angela's Barbies in settings that resembled what was happening all around them — catching the fish, hanging the fish, preserving it, cooking it. And then once she was old enough, she helped out with those chores. Angela says that she didn't realize how special fish camp was until she started creating Fish Camp Barbie dioramas for her own daughters. It was a way to share her life with them and to teach them how to be proud of who they are. From her time at Fish Camp, Angela also learned the importance of work — that if you want to succeed, then you need to work. Today, this manifests itself in her beading. It's easy for her to sit down for a few hours and focus on a project. She's beaded earrings, pins, the tops of gloves, slippers, coasters. A recent project she finished included caribou tufting, raised beadwork and silverberry beads that she harvested herself. She says she's inspired by the beadwork of her late grandmas and aunts. Their color choices, designs, and techniques. She likes to think about the stories and the experiences that led them to create their art.

A job that for Meg was a constant reminder of the generosity of the gift that the Phillips Family gave to us all. Also, an incredible first year job, to be able to engage with participants, PTC staff, and the general public. Meg went on to personify a fictional Irish immigrant at French Henry, spend two consecutive summers at Fish Camp, and many more backcountry and second season experiences. Meg and I share our ghostly visitation encounters at Fish Camp, both of which ominously occurred on the celebration of Helen Jane's birthday. Meg discusses the ritual of celebrating birthdays at Philmont and attending surrounding community events like the Red River Wine and Arts Festival. Today Meg is a Landscape Architect, and Director of Legacy Design at Design Workshop - out of the Aspen, CO office. From her professional socio-ecological perspective, we chat about what makes the landscape of Philmont so special to its people. Meg closes the interview sharing memories of her cousin Coralie Graham, and how Meg continues to surround herself with Philmont and Northern NM culture in her daily life. Eating in a restaurant is more than just food -- in its simplest form, it is an experience eating food in an environment outside your home. For Kate Towill of Basic Projects in Charleston, SC, that experience is a blank slate for design, design that goes way beyond what color to paint the walls. She spent 6 years in the film industry as a set designer working on commercials, music videos and feature films. Her clients ranged from HBO to Wes Anderson, including being part of the art department for his film Moonrise Kingdom. When Kate and her husband Ben moved from NYC to Charleston in 2013, they founded Basic Projects, which works in both commercial and residential design and currently includes three Lowcountry restaurants: Basic Kitchen, Post House, and Sullivan's Fish Camp. Each one of these restaurants is a full environment filled with a unique blend of elements -- from original art to lighting to a well-curated playlist -- that create an immersive place in which to experience the restaurant's food. If you're looking to elevate your own eating environment at home, this conversation on how to combine and curate design elements can provide some inspiration, or if not, at the very least, it will probably make you notice next time the lightbulbs don't look right in that corner booth.
Phil first trekked with the inaugural group of Kit Carson Men in 1968. He returned and worked on staff in the 60s and 70s. From 2014 on, he's been heavily involved with the PSA and this summer, he completed his 14th PSA trek. As a ranger on staff in 69, Phil appreciated and enjoyed the exposure to diversity, guiding crew from all over the country. The rest of his tenure was spent in the backcountry, namely the two summers he was CD at Fish Camp - back when the hot water heater, shower, and flushing toilet was still functioning. Phil shares many stories including the two year concrete removal project and the epic New Years fish fry.In the second portion of his interview, Phil highlights the rewarding work of being involved with the Philmont Staff Association - where his Philmont family has grown exponentially. He specifically discusses a behind the scenes take on Volunteer Vacation and PhilBreak. Both of which are an economical and worthwhile way to visit the ranch and give back. It's no secret that we love Philmont and its people. Many of us work seven, eight, or nine summers or seasons in a row. We even consider and some of us achieve - the dream of returning on staff full-time. In November of 2021, Nancy Coleman Stickelman and her husband Kevin made that happen for their family as Kevin was offered the Director of Facilities position. For Nancy, Scouting and Philmont have been a part of her life for quite some time. Today she resides on property with her family in the Upper Heck House, previously occupied by Bob and Rachel Ricklefs. She recalls her first experience on trek, during a backcountry rainstorm, basking in a moment of the world feeling limitless, with infinite possibilities to experience love and success. Nancy worked seven summers in the backcountry, including in 2000 - she was CD at Fish Camp the first summer that it became interpretive, and in 2002 - she was first female CD at Cyphers Mine. In 2003 she worked alongside Doug Palmer and Deborah Blanche developing and deepening accurate roots for the interpretive program - collecting historical guidelines, first person characters, and music to reflect the correct era being portrayed. For Nancy, Philmont has always been about interacting with its people and developing those meaningful connections. Nancy is working to carve out a place for herself at the ranch, and she has enjoyed substitute teaching in the Cimarron Schools. She aims to replicate the welcoming nature of backcountry camps, by sharing food and conversation at her home or in the dining hall, amongst a crowded table. Every other year or so, Annie Anderson's family made the trek from Tennessee to Philmont to attend PTC. And ever since then, for Annie, Philmont has always felt like home. As a PTC participant, Annie loved meeting kids her own age and running around the wilderness together. Today, she shares stories from her time as a participant on Mountain Trek, ROCS, and Rayado. From altitude sickness and homesickness, to playing cards in camp and receiving motivating i-camps on the trail - all three special treks had elements of intimidating capability and tremendous spirit. Rayado specifically allowed Annie the chance to experience a zen state of mental stimulation via surrendering control to the unknown and unexpected. All together, her time spent as a Philmont participant, prepared her for her time on staff in 2018 as a TSI crew member (originally hired as PC Beaubien), 2021 PC Metcalf, and in the fall of 2021 she worked and lived at Fish Camp on Cabin Restoration. Today Annie is an avid climber, artist, and loves spending time with her family and friends who are like family. Her brother Sam is her biggest mentor and together they close this episode with a special tune for you all. Ashley spent five summers growing and learning as a PTC participant and five summers working in the Philmont backcountry. It was in 1998 at PTC that she learned of the newly-revamped Venturing Program and quickly joined a crew once she returned home. She was enthusiastic about the opportunity to be a part of this co-ed, youth-lead BSA leadership program. Recalling her formative experiences on staff, Ashley shares her love for knitting, reading the Philnews in the backcountry by candlelight, manning the radio during SARs on Baldy, and forming her own tradition of hiking with butterscotch chips and baking sweets for fellow staff. At Fish and Rich, she enjoyed the opportunity to learn about and portray the lives of historic individuals. In 2006, descendants of the Rich family came to camp and had a meal with her and her staff. She was also part of an uncommon, all female staff at Fish Camp in the summer of 2005.Today Ashley teaches astronomy and physics at the College of Charleston, and studies exploding stars. During our interview, she appropriately wore a Tooth of Time Traders t-shirt showcasing Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, and Ursa mini - the infamous Philmont mini-bear. Ashley aspires to return to Philmont one day as a visiting astronomer at Ring Place. Rufus Wakeman has been a friend before I ever met him. His legacy precedes his presence. He's big, boisterous and lovable, with the ability to out fish the best of them. We traveled to the Amazon eons ago and was awarded with a trip of a lifetime accentuated by my new found friend! His passion for fishing took him around the world and into the fishes' most demanding and far reaching homes. He's held numerous highly cherished world records including a 57 pound dolphin on 16 pound tippet. He also, with utter amazement, caught 11 billfish species on fly in one year. He was one species short of catching all 12 billfish species in one year! The elusive swordfish denied his grand slam dream. He built the River Palm Cottages and Fish Camp on the Saint Lucie River where his family experienced first hand the despicable Lake Okeechobee algae discharges, which over the years has decimated the river's ability to grow healthy grass essential to holding game fish. He's given generously to many conservation based organizations and is the President of the Coastal Conservation Association of Martin County, FL. He is one of the most important people in our sport today and his voice needs to be heard! We hope you enjoy his riveting story... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ATTENTION: SOME OF THE THINGS DISCUSSED IN THIS PODCAST MAY NOT BE ACCURATE AS THIS PODCAST WAS RECORDED ON 2/12/22 AND A LOT HAS CHANGED (IN REGARD TO SB2508) SINCE THIS RECORDING.
