Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/666  Presented By: TroutRoutes, Waters West, Togens Fly Shop, Stonefly Nets Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors      In this episode, Joe Rist and I will journey to fly fishing the Catskills, often hailed as the birthplace of American fly fishing. Join us as we uncover the rich history of this iconic region, explore the streams of the Beaver Kill and the Delaware branches, and discover why this area holds such a special place in the hearts of anglers. With Joe's expert insights, you'll learn valuable tips on dry fly fishing and perfecting your casting techniques. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a curious novice, this episode promises to deepen your appreciation for fly fishing in one of the most storied landscapes in the U.S. Episode Chapters with Joe Rist on Fly Fishing the Catskills 1:54 - We explore Joe's journey into fly fishing, sparked by his father's introduction with basic fishing gear. His passion solidified after catching his first brook trout in Maine and starting "Fish Camp" with friends. Joe transitioned to guiding professionally after retiring from the post office at 55. Following the passing of the shop's owner, Joe, with no retail experience but support from his family, successfully opened Trout Town Flies, now in its fifth year. 7:48 - We talk about the history of fly fishing in the Catskill region. Joe highlights its significance as "holy waters," noting contributions from pioneers like Theodore Gordon and George La Branche. The Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum, covering 50 acres, showcases important figures and artifacts in fly fishing, including the resurgence of interest among younger people during the Covid pandemic. 11:12 - Joe offers advice on the best fishing times in the Catskills, recommending May for dry fly fishing due to ideal temperatures. He suggests novice-friendly rivers like Beaver Kill and Willow, while recommending the East and West Branches of the Delaware River for experienced anglers. 16:22 - For lodging and camping, Joe explains that while there is ample lodging, prime time (late April to early June) requires early reservations starting in December or January. The area has modest accommodations catering to fishermen, including notable places like Roscoe Motel, Riverside Cafe & Lodge, Red Rose, and Rockland House. For DIY camping, there are several state campgrounds, including Butternut Grove, Roscoe Campsite Park, and Peaceful Valley on the Delaware. 18:50 - Joe reveals that his shop makes 60-70% of its flies in-house. He highlights the significance of tying flies like cripples and emergers, as well as traditional Catskill flies. He also recounts creating the brown floating nymph (BFN) after noticing fish feeding on a specific insect on the West Branch of the Delaware. 25:29 - We get into the other flies he uses in the Catskills. Joe uses the gray fox, cahill, and red quill, effectively on their rivers. He provides a tip for modifying a red quill to mimic a rusty spinner. 28:35 - We focus on fishing the Beaver Kill. Joe notes that the Beaver Kill is more accessible for novice fly fishermen due to its high gradient, which helps correct casting errors. He also mentions that it is stocked with brown trout by the New York State. 32:06 - Our conversation shifts to fishing techniques, where Joe explains the importance of positioning above the fish and allowing the current to deliver the fly naturally. He mentions that in the east, anglers need to feed a lot of line—sometimes 70 to 80 feet—to achieve this, which can be challenging but necessary for successful fishing. 33:24 - Joe elaborates on fishing in the Delaware system, highlighting the commonality of catching large fish, including 21-27 inch fish. He explains the strength and resilience of these fish, particularly due to the cold, fast-moving waters. He also mentions migratory fish like shad and stripers that enter the Delaware system, and the presence of smallmouth bass in areas like the Beaver Kill. He notes that while there are various fish species, anglers predominantly seek large rainbows and browns. 38:05 - We talk about the fishing regulations and conditions in New York. Joe explains that the fishing season runs year-round, with specific rules: from April 1st to October 15th, regular fishing with size and catch limits is allowed; from October 16th to March 31st, it's catch and release only, with no live bait. 39:33 - Joe mentions temperature inversions in the Delaware River's tail waters, which affect fishing conditions. Milder winters have led to earlier fishing and hatches, with some species appearing sooner. He highlights that the tail waters offer consistent fishing opportunities, even in warmer months, and details the fishable waters: 17 miles on the west branch and variable conditions on the east branch. 42:03 - Joe describes their guiding and fishing techniques in the Catskills. 46:16 - For new anglers fishing the west branch of a large river, Joe emphasizes the importance of patience and observation when approaching the water. He advises beginners to look for foam lines, which indicate where food and fish might be. He also suggests breaking the river down into smaller sections, treating it first as a brook, then a stream, to make it less intimidating. He also highlights the need to adjust fishing techniques based on the time of day and hatches. Joe mentions that his shop can help plan trips and tailor them to the angler's schedule, whether it involves fishing in the morning or evening. 51:19 - We ask about his essential fishing gear. Joe highlights the use of fish-friendly ghost nets, wading staff for stability, quality wading boots for ankle support, and wading belt for safety. He also favors traditional vests for storage and versatility. 53:19 - As we approach late September and early October, he mentions the pre-spawn period when aggressive male trout favor streamers in orange or yellow. He mentions the essential flies during this period. 57:42 - Joe shares his travel bucket list, including a planned trip to Chile with his daughter to potentially represent a lodge there. He also expresses interest in fishing in Alaska and Montana's grayling, despite past trips to Colorado, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. 59:18 - We discuss various boats and flotation devices for the Delaware River, including traditional boats, rafts, kayaks, and paddleboards. Joe warns against belly boats due to safety concerns and praises drift boats for their ability to navigate shallow waters. 1:00:38 - We ask him a couple of random questions on his music preference and go-to bar and restaurants in their area. For music, he likes the Allman Brothers, Coldplay, and Marshall Tucker. Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/666

Barrett Davis has just released his debut album. It's been a long time in the making. In fact, he started one of the songs over 10 years ago. But that's not to say he hasn't been busy. That's actually why it's taken so long for it's release. Music has always been a huge part of his life. His dad is a blues guitarist who's played with Marshall Tucker and Jeannie C. Reilly (which should be a podcast unto itself). His mom is a singer who helped train his sister, who now sings opera in Amsterdam. Barrett was playing with his dad as well as his own band,The Foxfire for years when he decided to step away and take a break. But he had met his wife, started a family and needed to give them time. He focused on construction and building a business in North Carolina, where he grew up. And when he decided the time was right, he took his time, incorporated everything he could from his favorite artists and the surrounding Appalachian music and has released The Ballad of Aesop Fin. There's a story behind everything with the album. That extends to the album title as well as the album length! Nothing is left to chance, here. Barrett has a deep connection to this music, to Appalachia, and surprisingly, gouda cheese. We recorded this right around the time of the World Cup and college football playoffs, so we even venture into sports just a bit. Give Barrett a follow on instagram @barrettdavismusic, Facebook, or his website barrettdavismusic.com. Pick up The Ballad of Aesop Fin wherever you buy music. Stream it, share it, get it out there! (Nov. 16, 2021) —  In 2022, the TheMarshall Tucker Band (MTB) will celebrate five decades since its inception. To celebrate, the multi-platinum southern rock group will hit the road for its historic “50th Anniversary Tour.” The MTB today revealed over 30 live concert dates with stops in Clearwater, Fla., Atlanta, Ga., Nashville, Tenn., Detroit, Mich., Chicago, Ill., New York, N.Y., Pittsburgh, Pa., Washington D.C., Phoenix, Ariz. and more.  “Five decades of The Marshall Tucker Band … sometimes it's still hard to understand,” says MTB lead singer Doug Gray. “We are just regular people. The fans have given us so many special moments over these 50 years. I'm so proud of our band.” In 1972, original members Toy Caldwell,Tommy Caldwell, Doug Gray, Jerry Eubanks, George McCorkle and Paul Riddle came together in Spartanburg, S.C. to form a southern rock band. They knew they had the magic for something that could reach people well beyond the South Carolina state line. They had the sound, the look, and the camaraderie. Problem was, they didn't have a name. One day while rehearsing in a local warehouse, they came across a key ring with the inscription, ‘Marshall Tucker.' It belonged to a blind piano tuner who resided in Spartanburg. It was this fated discovery that inspired the band's moniker, and in that moment, The Marshall Tucker Band was born.  Dave Mason will join the legendary group on select live concert dates. “I'm really looking forward to joining the 50th anniversary celebration of this extraordinary band,” says Mason. “I've been waiting to get back on the road, and this is quite the opportunity to bring great music to everybody, everywhere.” “Our special songs, guided by the lyrics of Toy Caldwell, have given us a deep emotional connection with our fans and friends,” adds Gray. “We love you all and can't wait to see you on the road in 2022.” The tour officially kicks-off on Jan. 12 at the Dosey Doe in The Woodlands, TX. In the coming weeks, the second leg of the tour will be announced via marshalltucker.com. The Marshall Tucker Band “50th Anniversary Tour” Schedule:Jan. 12 – The Woodlands, TX – Dosey DoeJan. 14 – Corpus Christi, TX – American Bank CenterJan. 15 – Baton Rouge, LA – L'Auberge CasinoJan. 21 – Clearwater, FL – Ruth Eckerd Hall ^^Jan. 22 – Tallahassee, FL – Donald Tucker Auditorium ++Jan. 26 – Okeechobee, FL – Seminole Hard RockJan. 27 – Immokalee, FL – Seminole Hard RockJan. 29 – Miami, FL – Magic City Casino +Feb. 3 – Huntsville, AL – Mark C. The Ashley Bean Band is a rock band hailing from Peoria Illinois. Over the years, The Ashley Bean Band has had influences that have molded their career into what it is today. Cathy Reynolds, four-time CIA Gospel Artist of the Year, Mike Isenberg of the International acclaimed family band, The Jets, back-up musician, Rusty Hall, and John Coulter, Marshall Tucker's sound engineer, Journey, and Diana Meltzer founder of Seether, Evanescence, and Creed have help direct this young energized rock band. The Band has also been featured in several magazines such as Stencil Magazine, Skilly Magazine, and Dominate Me Magazine. The Ashley Bean Band appeared on The Real Radio Show with Frankie Dee and RJ which is located in New York. Ashley was nominated for two music awards in the year 2020 with the largest independent music award show, The Josie Music Awards. These awards include, Best Song of the Year and Best Music Video of the Year. In the year 2020, Ashley signed a major distribution deal with Rock Avenue Records USA. The Band's music has been compared to Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, as well as Alice In Chains and Nirvana. What a combo of musical innovators without compromise to follow trends, but rather create them. The Band would say it is Classical meets Rock with a heartfelt and unique style. All of the lyrics and music are Ashley's original creations. Her voice style and genre is distinct, raw and gives her music an incredible commercial, but almost underground sound at the same timeless, not pretty and pink, but black on black. www.ashleybeanband.net

As the lead guitarist for multi-platinum rock band Candlebox, Brian Quinn has traveled the world performing in front of crowds as large as 90,000 at a time and sharing the stage with some of most iconic legends in the industry. But to this life-long musician, he’s just as happy performing to an audience of 100 as 100,000. Because for him, it’s all about the music. It always has.  Drawn to the guitar at a very early age, he first picked up the guitar at the young age of five and was playing sold-out shows by the age of 15 with his hardcore band Burial Ground((1990-1996). He, then, spent six years performing in the hardcore circuit with what was considered one of the most influential acts of that time, inadvertently being credited with “inventing” the sub-genre of hardcore music described today as “Bloodcore”. Burial Ground released an independent album that received rave reviews from fans and critics alike. But, by 17 larger things were calling and Quinn headed to Philadelphia in search of something more.Soon after arriving in the city of Brotherly Love, he co-founded the Philadelphia-based rock band Octane (2000-2005). Still considered to this day as one of the most successful bands to come out of Philly, Octane sold more than 65,000 copies of their independent debut release and enjoyed more than 1000 spins of the single “I For One” on Philadelphia rock station 94.1 WYSP.During this time, Quinn was named “Best Guitarist” in the Philadelphia region by the Philadelphia Music Awards in 2001 and 2004 and was routinely praised by fans and critics alike for his signature guitar technique, his ability on “slide” guitar, and dynamic on-stage presence. After enjoying five successful years with Octane, Quinn left the band to found a blues-based hard rock band that would later become known as Fosterchild. This project would quickly gain national attention and the band was signed to the SMG/ILG/WARNER record label from 2007-2010. The band hit the road on a U.S. tour and it was then that Quinn met Kevin Martin, lead singer of Candlebox. Immediately impressed with Quinn’s talent, Martin promised him he’d one day have a spot in Candlebox.Quinn continued to tour the country with Fosterchild and even garnered a special invitation to perform for the U.S. troops stationed at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, where the group performed in front of thousands of soldiers on New Year’s Eve of 2010.Quinn has been invited to perform at NAMM Ultimate Jam Night for the past two years, alongside Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan and many other iconic artists. He routinely guests with the American Vinyl All Star Band featuring Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (Steely Dan/Doobie Bros.), Barry Goudreau (formerly of the band Boston), Robert “Mousey” Thompson (Wilson Pickett/James Brown), Leroy Romans (Third World / The Wailers), and Tim Archibald (Peter Wolf / RTZ).A proficient studio musician as well, Quinn provided the critically-acclaimed guitar work on Candlebox’s last album Disappearing In Airports, which debuted at #9 on the Billboard Charts, as well as the 2017 release of Disappearing Live. He most recently contributed his axe-work to Candlebox’s forthcoming album Wolves, which is slated for a September 2021 release and has also lent his guitar skills to a myriad of artists across multiple genres of music.During his career, Quinn shared the stage with such acts as: Ozzy Osbourne, Slash’s Snakepit, Gene Simmons, Metallica, Kid Rock, Disturbed, Judas Priest, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sixx AM, Chevelle, 3 Doors Down, Seether, Sevendust, Three Days Grace, Candlebox, Tantric, Shinedown, Robert Randolph & The Family, Alter Bridge, Godsmack, Taproot, Nonpoint, Mudvayne, Deftones, Zakk Wylde, Black Label Society, Buckcherry, Warren Haynes, Marshall Tucker, Devo, Finger Eleven, and the House Of Blues All-Stars (with whom he performed alongside rock legends Jeffrey “Skunk” Baxter of Doobie Bros & Steely Dan, Fran Sheehan and Barry Goudreau of Boston, drum phenom Kenny Aranoff (John Mellecamp, Bob Dylan, John Fogerty), Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction, Alanis Morrisette), and James Montgomery of Johnny Winter fame).Quinn is currently endorsed by Gibson Guitars, D'Addario Strings, Planet Waves Accessories, The Rock Slide by the Songhurst Guitar Company, and LPS Clothing. 1977 - May: The Sex Pistols “Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 25, 2021 38:53

We've profiled albums from bands which were a mess in real life before, but it would be hard to identify a more "bad boy" oriented group than the Sex Pistols.  We'll also not be profiling any other Sex Pistols studio album…because Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols is their sole studio album.  The Sex Pistols put out a number of singles ahead of the album, so while the full album was released in October of 1977, their single "God Save the Queen" was released in May of 1977.  The Sex Pistols defined Punk Rock in a way that would influence the entire genre for decades.Members of the group were Glen Matlock on bass, Steve Jones on guitar, Paul Cook on drums and Johnny Rotten (who got the nickname for his bad teeth) on lead vocals.  Sid Vicious would come in on bass after Matlock split with the group.  The members didn't get along with each other, didn't get along with the media, the public, or pretty much anyone.  They had already had an obscenity-laden interview on television in December 1976 which kept the tabloids busy for days afterward, and "God Save the Queen" continued their infamous image with its broadside against conformity and the crown. The popularity of the Sex Pistols was a reflection of the underlying resentment towards the tough times in England during the late 70s.  Their enduring popularity is a reflection of the punk movement the Sex Pistols helped to found in this short-lived group and album. God Save the QueenAlso known as "No Future," with lyrics like "God Save the Queen, she ain't no human being," it is not surprising that the BBC refused to play the song.  Despite this, it went to number 2 on the charts in the UK.  The Sex Pistols leased a boat just before the Queen's Jubilee (25-year anniversary) and played off it past Westminster Abbey and Parliament.  They were arrested as they exited the boat.SubmissionThis deeper cut takes a different pace than your normal punk song, but plays on words.  "I'm on a submarine mission for you baby."  Not as submissive as it appears at first, is it?  Their manager wanted them to do a bondage-type song, but the band never was known to take instructions very well, and so created this pun on the word as a result.Pretty VacantThis third single was one of the first songs written by the group.  The track is a rant about appearances masking a lack of substance.  "I'm so pretty, you're so pretty...pretty vacant...and we don't care."  The music of the Sex Pistols remains loud, and uses simple power chords.Anarchy in the UKThe Sex Pistol's first single released is iconic.  "Don't know what I want, but I know how to get it.  I want to destroy the passerby."   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme from the television series “The Brady Bunch”We apologize for the abrupt change!  "The Brady Bunch Hour" variety show had its last airing in May 1977. STAFF PICKS:Calling Dr. Love  by KissBrian's staff pick starts us with more cowbell!  Gene Simmons takes lead vocals on a song inspired by a short from "The Three Stooges," entitled "Men in Black," where they were calling various Doctors.  Katey Sagal (from Married...With Children) is a backing vocalist on this song. Heard It In a Love Song by The Marshall Tucker BandBruce brings us the highest charting single from Spartanburg, South Carolina's own.  The Marshall Tucker Band got their name from a door key to the warehouse whey had rented for rehearsal, which had the name "Marshall Tucker" inscribed on it.  Later they found out that the key belonged to a blind piano tuner who had tuned a piano in the rented space just before their arrival.Lonely Boy   by Andrew GoldRob's staff pick was on the charts for about two months, and tells a story about a family raising a boy who is the center of their world until his little sister comes along.  Linda Ronstadt contributes to the vocals in this track.  Andrew Gold had a close association with Ronstadt.Couldn't Get It Right  by Climax Blues BandWayne gets his groove on with a two-hit wonder from an English band.  The band wrote the song "from absolutely nowhere" after their label couldn't find a standout song for the single from their album.  The lyrics were inspired by the band searching for the "Holiday Inn" sign for their motel after a show on their tour in America.  INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Cruise Control by the Dixie DregsWe finish off this week with a long instrumental from the prog rock band the Dixie Dregs.  This is likely their most famous song, and is covered by a lot of bands.

Happy Veterans Day Wolfpack! It's November 11 and today we celebrate and thank our veterans for serving and protecting our country. Rock and roll has had its fair share of veterans including the father of rock, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Ray Manzarek of the Doors, Shaggy and Tool front man Maynard James Keenan. Also, Toy Caldwell served in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War until a landmine accident sent him home. If you don't recognize the name Toy Caldwell, he was the founder of the Marshall Tucker Band. There was never a Marshall Tucker in the band, and it was originally called the Toy Factory. . They ended up with the Marshall Tucker Band when they saw on their key to the rented rehearsal space they were using the name Marshall Tucker. They later learned that Marshall Tucker, a blind piano tuner, was the previous tenant of the space. The Marshall Tucker Band is an interesting group coming to us out of our very own Spartanburg, South Carolina that incorporated blues, jazz, and country into their sound helping to establish the genre of Southern Rock. Pulling from the Marshall Tucker Band's vast discography, today we are looking at "Bob away My Blues". This song is admittedly a little heavy on the country side, but still brings us a very positive message. Well I'm goin' down to the river I've got a canepole in my hand I've got my redworms in a Maxwell house coffee can I'm gonna sit under a shade tree on a riverbank where it's cool I'm gonna close my eyes and dream and let the cork bob away my blues The speaker in this song has a positive outlet for his every day stresses and ensures he takes time to go fishing and let "the cork bob away [his] blues." We all need a method to destress. A noticeable absence in this song is the lack of specifics about his blues. Throughout the song he only makes reference to his pa encouraging him to move to the city and being a city boy with the country blues. It's a noticeable departure from your typical blues song which delves into specifics regarding the source of the speaker's blues. SImilarly, while venting our frustrations can have a cathartic release of stress, if it's done without focus on a solution, and done repetitively, it can start to refuel the stress as no solution is addressed and a feeling of hopelessness can set in. Vent if you are looking for solutions. But distance yourself from the stress with hobbies and past-times which can calm your mind. Also noticeable is that city boy who remembers his roots in the country. Sometimes we forget where we come from, and in education that can translate into why we chose to become a teacher. Usually it's not a simply "I love reading," or "I love history" or... well, insert the appropriate subject for you. There are plenty of occupations for the subject matter we chose to teach, occupations which would keep us from having to try and wrangle a menagerie of emotionally volatile teens. But we chose teaching. Usually there's some component of wanting to help teens grow and develop. We got into it focused on the student. But we let standards and tests shift our focus to the content. Remember why you chose teaching, especially as tests creep up. Growth is growth, be it academic, behavioral, interpersonal, or that slow growing personal growth that doesn't fully develop until adulthood. Positive relations with students will garner at least one. Thank you for being the best, thank you for all that you do, and remember to let the cork bob your blues away.

I loved Ann Wilson, she was playing on a black flute," Steinbeck recalled "I mean, I played along with records. I love Traffic. I love Stevie Winwood. Marshall Tucker had a lot of flute." Luna and the Mountain Jets is an Appalachian rock band from Eastern Kentucky. The core of the group is the husband and wife team of Teresa (guitar vocals) and Dave Prince (guitar/vocals). As a duo, they draw material from their three CDs of original songs, which ranges from electric folk to Americana/twang rock. They also add drums for some performances as well as offering a full four-piece band on occasion. Luna is at home at a house concert, intimate coffeehouse, or opening for national touring acts like the Kentucky Headhunters, Marshall Tucker, and Larry Cordle. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
