Last show of the month and we were lucky two get two guests on the show, em_laa and Jeremy Sylvester. The first show on VBR was a new mix of new(ish) tracks, so that leaves this week for crate digging and boy did we dig! At least three quarters of the mix is vinyl as I didn't switch to digital until 2005 and most of these tracks are much older than that.No preconceptions of what I was gonna play or even the style. We started super chill with Karizma's remix of John Legend's - Ordinary People. By track four we'd gone all the way back to the early 90's and that's where we spend a lot of the first half of the mix. The US garage sound of the early 90's reigns supreme with classic after classic raining down.We then transition across the pond to my homeland for the UK garage equivalent with mid 90's classics on the menu. We'll do it all again next month, but for now I'm gonna call the first month on VBR a roaring success. There's a great energy and real buzz on the station. The chatroom seems to always be busy and everyone is so supportive of each other.Congratulations Andy.Tracklisting:1: John Legend - Ordinary People (Karizma Kayorican Remix)2: Real People - Alibi (Dennis F's Out In Bali Mix)3: Fuminori Kagajo ft Adeola Ranson - Piece Of Heaven (Sean McCabe Dub Mix)4: Seven Grand Housing Authority - The Question (Terrence Parkers Orig)5: DJ Man-X & Vick Lavender ft Shawnee Taylor - Happy Endings (Frankie Feliciano Classic Vocal)6: Shawn Christopher - Make My Love (Stonebridge Main Mix)7: MK - Burning8: Clubland - Lovetrain (Def Mix)9: Nush - Nush10: ACR - 27 Forever11: Buster Gut - Find Someone12: Darryl James - You Make Me Happy (Todd Terry)13: Smooth Touch - House Of Love14: Sagat - Luv Stuff15: Carleen Anderson - Mamma Said (K Klassic Mix)16: c2eMusic - Beautiful Person17: Roger S - Time To Stop18: Gusto - Disco's Revenge19: The Bucketheads - The Bomb20: That Kid Chris - Feel The Vibe21: Ground 96 - Love Has Taken Over22: Todd Edwards - Push The Love23: ??? The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Another county adopts the No New Revenue Tax Rate without causing the sky to fall. New figures out today from Lubbock County's newly factored No New Revenue Tax Rate budget shows what an outright unmitigated liar Bowtie Bully Curtis Parrish, and his other allies, was with the “deep cuts” scare tactics.Note this: “Galveston County Commissioners Court passed a budget for FY 2025 based on a property tax rate below the NNR rate. According to Galveston County Judge Mark Henry, this is the 14th year in a row the county has lowered property taxes.” Why that is not possible according to fake Republican Parrish! Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.The mostly unreliable federal judge Xavier Rodriguez rules against the 2021 Texas law that limits illegal ballot harvesting. The nuclear regulator for South Africa, NNR, has announced that one of the plant's two units may continue to operate for an additional 20 years at the Koeberg nuclear power station.Unit 1 of the plant, west of Cape Town was set to have its 40-year operating license expire this month, but state-owned power company Eskom requested a 20-year extension to continue operations in an attempt to alleviate the severe power outages. We are joined by Princess Mthombeni, creator of Africa4Nuclear, to discuss the implications of the regulator's decision for the nation's power system over the next 20 years and how it will move away from a coal-dominated energy mix.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today's pod guest is Nicole Spencer. Nicole is the executive director of Heroes in Transition, an organization that provides assistance for veterans, service members, and their families. Produced using a nearly equal mix of Audacity and Ardour in Linux (either Fedora Linux (Gnome), Nobara (Gnome), SteamOS 3 (KDE), Manjaro (MATE), Ubuntu DDE, Ultramarine (Pantheon), Ubuntu Unity, Sparky Linux (NsCDE), or on any combination of the Gaming PC "Big Rig", the Steam Deck, Living Room desktop, Mac Mini or one of three Linux laptops – Fedora on Laptop and/or Nobara on Big Rig being the most likely and most common). I mixed it down to mono for the episode so that it would at least come out of both speakers (and would be louder in the mix), but half the track info is still missing. I typically do not produce episodes this way, but this is what I had to work with in the studio context, and was unable to do anything else about it in post. 2) Usually, each voice is recorded separately so that I can adjust levels and apply compression etc to each element individually. In the case of this recording, all three voices, as well as the background music were all on just one track, so I could not adjust individual components individually. And in addition to the problems mentioned above with the background music, St. John's mic was hotter than Adam's and Elijah's since I was sitting closer to the mic than they were. I was able to mostly correct for this in post by applying more compression / limiter / amplify passes than are usually required. I think the final results on this point are actually pretty reasonably good, and this actually had the latent benefit of only further raising the volume on the BGM as well - which had been too quiet originally. 3) This part SUPER excites me! The ISU radio studio used Electro-Voice RE20 mics, where St. John typically records using a Shure SM7B. These two mics are within $50 in price of each other, and are collectively the #1 and #2 most commonly used mics in professional radio and professional podcasting contexts. I had always wondered and worried whether or not I made the right choice going SM7B instead of RE20, and how my voice would sound on the RE20 instead. This experience gave me the opportunity to find out, and I think the RE20 sounds fantastic! The jury's still out for me on which one I actually sound BETTER on, though, because I think the SM7B sounds pretty amazing as well. So any gearheads listening to this episode and reading these notes, please listen to either C2E13, C2E14, or C2E15 to serve as a comparative to this RE20-propelled episode and let me know which sound you prefer. It seems so far to be VERY dependent upon which set of headphones / speakers on which I'm listening to them. So I could -REALLY- use some second and third opinions etc. The SM7B recordings are brighter and more “natural” sounding (since I have the SM7B's “presence boost” feature enabled - a feature which the RE20 lacks), where the RE20 recording is warmer, rounder, deeper, and has more of that great “rrraadiiiooo” sound that I've actually been chasing after this entire time. The drawbacks are that the SM7B can sound a little thin and reedy, while the RE20 can sound a little muddy and boomy. I had talked about it depending on the speaker source. On some, the SM7B sounds thin and reedy while the RE20 sounds amazing, and on others, the RE20 sounds boomy and muddy while the SM7B sounds great! So, give em both a listen, and lemme know. I'm -VERY- tempted to buy an RE20 now after this experience, but if the consensus prefers me on the $400 SM7B which I already own, then perhaps that saves me the $450! You know, perhaps I'll just buy the RE20 anyway and try recording on both at the same time in the hopes of getting a best of both when I blend them in post. 4) Unlike with typical NNR episodes, track extensions do not loop smoothly, but “hard end and hard begin” to preserve how they appear on the album. It's a clunkier-sounding experience this way, but it was done to preserve the album content. 5) In the case of most of these tracks, I was able to sync the imposed high-quality audio files from the non-speaking portions to the BGM handoff points in the speaking portions. However, there were a handful that were near-misses. I hid these as best as I could, and doubt it'll create any listening difficulties, but I did want to acknowledge them. :-) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Links to Adam's and Elijah's works: Adam Frazier's YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNNkqyHP4wS4FRcwkqN8SXA Time and Place Album (playlist): https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mhsNxGzAuuV15_8cc_gU9WlzZgHJrZGoc&si=by5lcVDrknk2FV0d Spotlight ISU (Elijah's Podcast): YouTube (with Video): https://www.youtube.com/@spotlightisu8022 Spotify (Audio-Only): https://open.spotify.com/show/4eEa7zaNA1YHhmUNxzo4fw?si=ec4bef01e95445cd Spotlight Episode 77 - featuring St. John of Nerd Noise Radio* Spotify (Audio-only): https://open.spotify.com/episode/5EDF0u5Q9LRF5pCMNqrYjN?si=0cn3oX_2RtGKuOJirGtg7A YouTube (Audio AND Video): https://youtu.be/9Xbcvqn4fDM?si=4aD4lKBJcG1vH-mU * = the Spotlight episode and the Nerd Noise Radio Episode were recorded on the same day, in the same place. Let's Go!!!
In light of the recent turn of events involving Spotify, and its impact to Nerd Noise Radio in particular, the VGM podcast scene more broadly, and even music podcasts of all types, I wanted to get a special announcement up right away about what's going on, and how Nerd Noise Radio is responding. This announcement is most directly applicable to our Spotify listeners, but applicable more broadly to all listeners of Nerd Noise Radio, and even to non-listeners in the VGM podcast scene - particularly to our fellow podcasters, be they NNR listeners or not. -St. John

Apologies if anyone feels like I'm making too big of a deal about all of this, but you have to understand that this diagnosis changes EVERYTHING for me! It feels like a 43yr chapter of my life has ended and a new chapter of greater clarity, optimism, self-love, and opportunity has begun. It simply means that much to me, gang! I promise that I won't keep talking a ton about it for the rest of time - or if I do, I will do so on a separate program dedicated specifically to the subject, but I do beg you to bear with me for now, while this is all still so new for me. :-) Also, another “flip-side of the coin” situation between this and C1E79, which didn't get discussed in the episode: In a certain manner of speaking, each episode are “the first episode ever to be produced in Fedora”. The mic time on both episodes were done on “the Big Rig”, which is running Arch-Based “Garuda KDE Dr460nized”, but the rest of the production was done on laptops. In the case of C1E79, the main laptop (which had been running Arch-based Endeavor OS [KDE] at the time) was out of commission awaiting a motherboard replacement, so all the production had to be done on one of my backup laptops, where I had just so happened to be “auditioning” Fedora 38 (Gnome) at the time. I ended up liking it so much that once the main laptop was repaired, I ended up replacing Endeavor with Fedora 38 (Gnome) - which was where all the production of this episode (minus the mic-time) happened. So, in a certain manner of speaking, both episodes were a “first time on Fedora” situation. Also, just as Arch-based Linux supplanted Ubuntu and Ubuntu-based distros, I feel like Fedora and Fedora-based is what is next to supplant Arch. Also, I think it's official: I'm a Gnome convert. My “KDE-first” days indeed appear to be over for the time-being at least. I've even since replaced Garuda KDE Dr460nized with Garuda Gnome, but not until after all the mic recordings had been completed.] Links to Autism tests - again, DO NOT take these test results as a SUBSTITUTE for a formal diagnosis by a trained professional. On the other hand, these tests are VERY reliable, so if they do indicate you have autism, you very likely do. Therefore, the advice of St. John is to take the test results and find a professional with whom you can show and discuss them: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17a6jSemcC5LO_HDqjB8iGHQcsJCMmr-1/view?usp=drive_link Links to Autism / ADHD / AuDHD YouTube videos mentioned in the episode (as well as a few others added later - such as Illymation, Savannah Brown, Not Your Average Zebra, Proudly Autistic, and Kaelynnism). Programledare: Eva Ericsson. Kontakt: podcast@aftonbladet.se
IMPORTANT NOTE: Masters of VGM Season 2 starts June 1st, and is slated to kick off with Nerd Noise Radio C1E76: "The Big Sound of the Little Guy - vol. 2". To prime the pump of excitement for MoVGM in general, as well as to offer a "compare and contrast" between the incoming, much more polished and measured and matured (and much more well-produced) sequel, and this much more enthusiastic, revolutionary, optimistic, and "heart-ful" example of early, clunky-but-exuberant NNR magic, we are re-running the original ahead of time. I am eager to receive feedback on what everyone things of vol 1 vs vol 2. I think vol 2 is "better", but vol 1 is "more important". I also think vol 1 is more "joyful", even if more "awkward". But tell me what YOU think!! They also each contain exactly one track composed by......ME - in fact, in this original episode, it's even the opening track! Masters of VGM can be found at www.mastersofvgm.com as well as on Twitter and Discord, and perhaps also other places. NNR will be just one of some 20 or 30 different VGM podcasts. So, please check out the entire collection, and give the other great shows some love as well! :-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today's broadcast is Episode 30 for Theme Thursday, June 14, 2018. Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed. Therefore it is STRONGLY recommended that you subscribe to this Nerd Noise Radio feed and bypass all others. This one will contain all their content anyway. Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1 ("Noise from the Hearts of Nerds") episodes, and not in any of the other content that is or will be offered by Nerd Noise Radio, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days. It is STRONGLY recommended for most listeners to subscribe to the All-Channels feed instead. However, if you really are only interested in Channel 1 content, here's the RSS: http://www.buzzsprout.com/77944.rss Our episodes will also appear on our Nerd Noise Radio YouTube Channel - just search for Nerd Noise Radio, you'll find us! Here's today's episode: https://youtu.be/73kM8YsRUdU Additionally, there are YouTube Playlists you can follow, both an "All Channels" Feed (recommended), as well as channel-specific feeds. Our guest is Rudy Espinoza. Rudy is the Executive Director for Inclusive Action For the City - a Boyle Heights-based non-profit organization that helps local businesses and entrepreneurs by connecting them with capital and resources. We first heard about Rudy and the organization because of their advocacy for street vendors in Los Angeles. Not long after meeting him, we got onto the topic of running. On today's pod, Rudy discusses his journey from an awkward junior high student trying to log 100 miles to an adult that ran with one of the oldest running clubs in LA. He also explains why one of the best places to run in LA is around a cemetery. I've heard Jack Canfora joke that being a playwright in America in this day and age is a little like choosing to be a figure skater in Kenya. Meaning no disrespect to Kenyan figure skaters, of course. Which makes me respect Jack and his path even more. He started with writing comedy sketches in his 20's and then became a playwright in his 30's. He's won awards, had his plays performed off-Broadway, and taken a lot of other jobs (teacher, copy writer, writing coach) to make it work. That is to say, Jack knows more about the business of writing than most of us put together – and still he writes! I could gush endlessly about Jack. And I often do. I've had a writer's crush on him for forever because he speaks to my heart. Every time I talk with him, read him, or listen/watch one of his plays, I come away smarter and more human. Along with his brilliance, he has a gentle kindness, empathy, and humor that make what he says sorta hang in the air with soft wonder. Please listen to this great conversation as we wind our way through collective effervescence, Abraham Lincoln, what the theater sounds like to a playwright and actor, and the “concentrated dose of emotion” we get from theater. What we know for sure is that she is incredibly knowledgeable about the current state of running and works with many fitness companies. We were so grateful she took the time to chat with us before her trip to run the Berlin Marathon and covered our widest range of topics yet. Today's guest is Tamara Jamil. Tamara takes us through her recent finish at the Salomon WMN Trail Half-Marathon; a race that in its own words, "took all of the best parts of community, competition and accessibility (think: free childcare) that a lot of women look for in a race." She also tells us about her previous half-marathon experiences and whether the trails in the bay area had any influence on her decision to pursue a PhD at UC Berkeley. In this episode, John turns the tables on Jack, because they look out of place. Then he interviews him about their friendship, writing for theater, and NNR's upcoming premiere of a new audio play, Step9. We learn what motivated NNR to do a "podcast play." Lastly, John drops his usual aggressive facade with Jack and reveals his gentler, passive-aggressive side.
Today's guest is Bill Maeda. Bill is a 53-year-old personal trainer based in Oahu. His simple workout videos, shot with limited equipment in the front yard of his house have inspired thousands of people including us. His was gracious enough to sit down and chat with us and dropped tons of knowledge. Sit down with a notepad because there's a lot you're going to take away from this episode. Today's guest is John Radich. We met John at the LA Marathon Expo and couldn't help but notice his Badwater belt buckle. After approaching him, we immediately sensed his warmth and generosity, and knew we had to have him on the pod (he also casually mentioned that he's completed Badwater 14 times!). John takes us through his history of running ultras going back to 1979. At 68, John is still crushing miles and if he's not running Badwater, he's out there crewing it. He also talks us through his cross-continental run and why it doesn't count unless you put your feet in the water. Our Outro Music is Results Parade from the Check Mii Out Channel on the Wii, composed by Kazumi Totaka. Produced using Ardour 6 / Audacity 3 in Ubuntu Studio [Linux] 22.04 A few important milestones in 2020 / 2021 that I had failed to mention in the intro, but which deserve mentioning: A) we had our first Ch 1 episode by Hugues (which was also the first Ch 1 in the entire show's history that St. John had absolutely no hand whatsoever in producing. It was a focus on music fromFalcomgames, and was quite succinctly named "The Falcom Episode" B) We made the migration from producing Nerd Noise Radio in GarageBand via MacOS on a mac mini (and using primarily MP3s in production – mostly through YouTube-to-MP3 websites) to producing NNR in a mix of Audacity andArdourvia Ubuntu Studio (Linux) on a mix of a Dell Latitude Laptop and my custom-built gaming PC (and using primarily WAVs in production – mostly through the youtube-dl command in the Linux terminal). The last episode to be produced in Mac was C1E52: Backtracks (April 1st 2020) and the first episode to be produced in Linux was Channel F: Backtracks – the OTHER 50 (April or May 2020). I feel like the production value on balance is noticeably and appreciably better after the change. And since Hugues is also a Linux user, that means that both sides of our Channel 2 episodes are Linux productions. You can find the Google Sheets spreadsheet showing St. John's work in arriving at his tracklist for this episode here (WARNING: MILD SPOILERS! Contains track lists for potential future Archive-exclusive SUPER BONUS supplemental music collections: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1X6JpkqiGADAF9sHAsSpgyImjvimVWJv2mOATf5_ZZGc/edit?usp=sharing You can also find all of our audio episodes on Archive.org as well as the occasional additional release only available there, such as remixes of previous releases and other content.
