According to CBS: The T.D. Jakes Group and Wells Fargo have unveiled a groundbreaking, 10-year partnership aimed at creating inclusive communities for people of all income levels. The announcement was made on "CBS Mornings" on Thursday. As part of the collaboration, Wells Fargo has committed up to $1 billion to fund a variety of projects that foster community development. Bishop T.D. Jakes emphasized the importance of taking action right now and helping minority groups. "The future looks very bleak, particularly for minorities," he said. "Black people, Brown people and also poor White people who are finding it difficult, workforce people, to find a job, to find opportunities to get housing, to get upward mobility." The inaugural project of the partnership focuses on the development of mixed-income housing and retail facilities outside of Atlanta. The location for the venture is an expansive, 95-acre property formerly known as Fort McPherson, which neighbors Tyler Perry Studios. Jakes said he has two primary motivations to participate in the partnership. First and foremost, he considers his legacy to be important and wants to give back and make a positive impact on the lives of those who have shown loyalty and support. His second motivation stems from helping create mixed-income housing, which will provide better opportunities for generations to come. "The reason mixed-income housing is vitally important is because we tried low-income communities before and they fall into the abyss and become ghettos," Jakes said. "Mixed-incomes have a much better result, safer, better schools, better opportunities, upward mobility." The T.D. Jakes Group is comprised of four business units, including T.D. Jakes Ministries and T.D. Jakes Foundation, both of which operate as nonprofit organizations. T.D. Jakes Enterprises and T.D. Jakes Real Estate Ventures function as profit-oriented entities.    Dr. Weightman discusses his lifetime of military service as a West Point cadet, infantry officer, and physician. He served as the 82nd Airborne Division Surgeon and describes his planning and execution of Operations Just Cause (combat jump into Panama) and Desert Storm. He also describes how he used these experiences to synchronize the medical knowledge of these conflicts to help implement cutting-edge battlefield care.   Dr. Weightman relates a behind-the-scenes look at the medical response to the Green Ramp disaster in 1994 at Fort Bragg where a mid-air collision of an F-16 and C-130 led to 23 fatalities and over 80 injured paratroopers that were brought to Womack Army Medical Center and surrounding hospitals.      He reflects on his time as the Commander of Joint Task Bravo in Honduras and describes the military medical mission in Central America.     Following 9/11, MG(R) Weightman played a large role in the planning and preparation for OEF and OIF as Commander of the 3rd MEDCOM, a Reserve Medical Command in Fort McPherson, GA. He shares many lessons learned while working with coalition partners and how he brought these into his role as the Commander of the AMEDD Center and School in San Antonio (now called the Medical Center of Excellence)    He commanded Walter Reed during the Washington Post articles and describes his perspectives on that issue and how to lead in difficult circumstances.  He also led the storied Army Medical Research and Material Command and explains how the DoD is committed to supporting innovative research designed to benefit the warfighter and other beneficiaries.    He shares many insights and lessons learned over a distinguished career and provides some valuable advice for all listeners. From Associated Press , August 14, 1986: ATLANTA (AP) _ Relatives of an American who was freed from a Vietnamese prison after an attempt to smuggle out two Vietnamese women said Thursday they feared he had been killed by China Sea pirates. Robert Schwab Jr. of Atlanta said his son called Thursday from Bangkok, Thailand, after a 16-month disappearance. Robert Schwab III, 43, was taken to Thailand after being released by Vietnamese officials, said White House spokesman Larry Speakes. ″It seemed like a dream. I had been so convinced I would never see him again,″ the elder Schwab said at his home in an affluent Atlanta neighborhood. ″We had a rather brief conversation,″ he said as his eyes filled with tears. ″He said ‘How are you?’ and I said ‘Great, but how are you?’ He said he was going to be perfectly OK.″ Another White House spokesman, Dan Howard, said Schwab left Vietnam without the two women. It was not known when he would return to the U.S. The younger Schwab, called Robbie, also is the son of Mrs. Robert Davis of Atlanta. The elder Schwab said Richard Childress, director of Asian affairs for the National Security Council, had telephoned Wednesday with the news that his son had been released. Schwab and his sister, Nan Pendergrast, said he had sailed for Vietnam in an 18-foot boat from the Philippines on April 19, 1985, in an attempt to smuggle out a Vietnamese woman named Mai and another family member. Investigators discovered that Schwab had left for Vietnam by himself, and the trail disappeared in the China Sea. ″It’s a 1,000-mile journey across the China Sea to Vietnam, and he’s a lousy sailor,″ Mrs. Pendergrast said. ″We checked and found there were no typhoons in that period, but the China Sea is full of pirates. We thought a lone man on a sailboat might be easy prey.″ Schwab became friends with the women’s family while living in the Southeast Asian nation during the Vietnam War and later working for the U.S. Embassy. There was no romantic involvement between the two, Schwab’s father said. However, the younger Schwab’s friends identified the women he sought as his fiancee and a child he believe was his. The friends also identified the woman as Trai. ″He had been one of the last Americans to be airlifted from the embassy when Saigon fell,″ Schwab said of his son. ″He had thought about taking the girl out then, but decided she should stay with her family. I think it had bothered him ever since, especially when refugees told him they knew the girl was very unhappy.″ The elder Schwab said his son had no contact with the Vietnamese family during his incarceration, and that Vietnamese police had questioned the girl about Schwab. ″I’m sure they thought he was a spy,″ the elder Schwab said. ″As to why he did such an outlandish thing, he hoped that such an open attempt to come to Vietnam, with the assumption he would be taken into custody, would lead the Vietnamese government to make a grand gesture.″ Ms. Pendergrast said her nephew had written her shortly before he disappeared and told her he was going hiking in the mountains and probably would be out of touch for several months. But family members began to worry after three months passed with no word. Schwab said he contacted friends at nearby Fort McPherson, who asked the commander of Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines to search for Schwab. Navy intelligence officers joined the search, along with a private investigator hired by Schwab’s mother, he said.

Episode 103 - In this episode we're heading to the Inuvik area of the Northwest Territories, near Fort McPherson. Along the Rat River in the summer of 1931 a stranger was first seen by two indigenous men canoeing on the river. He was a stranger who, save for a short visit to town for supplies, kept to himself. The man was later accused of interfering with the traps of other hunters and trapping without a license. When RCMP went to investigate hell broke loose, culminating in attempted murder of one RCMP constable and the murder of another at the hands of the man. The man, known by the alias Albert Johnson, lead RCMP on a six week chase across the frozen tundra before he was taken down. His true identity remains a mystery. An unknown man showed up in Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories, Canada, in 1931, He said very little, only that his name was Albert Johnson. It was the beginning of an amazing tale that started with mischief and destruction of property, an epic chase across the frozen Delta, murder, and a mystery that has never been solved. Hugh Feagan recounts the sequence of events and strange circumstances, along with his interesting connection to the preservation of these historical events. 

On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we take off to the great white north and discuss one of the most notorious manhunts in Canada’s history—the story of the Mad Trapper of Rat River. It is a story of fur trapping gone wrong, miraculous feats of manliness, dog sleds, gun fights, and dynamite. In 1932, this mystery man led the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and a lot of native Americans on a month and a half long chase over 150 miles of the most wild tundra the Yukon has to offer. In 1931, a man calling himself Albert Johnson showed up in the small town of Fort McPherson. He was muscular, quiet, had a Scandinavian accent, and spread around a lot of cash. Also, he didn’t ever get a trapper’s license, which was odd since the only way to survive where he ended up building a cabin was to trap wild game. A few months after his arrival, members of a local tribe noticed their traps were being set off and put in trees, and they blamed the only new person in the region, Albert Johnson. On New Year’s eve, two Mounties made it to his remote cabin, and he refused to speak to them, forcing them to make the incredibly long trip back. They returned a week later with a few more men and a search warrant, and The Mad Trapper fired at them through the door, hitting one officer and forcing a retreat. Well, this lead to the Mounties coming back with 9 men and lots of dynamite, and they just sort of blew up the joint. The cabin became a smoldering wreck, but The Mad Trapper was still alive inside of it and held them at bay for a 15 hour gunfight in a -40 degree blizzard! The men retreated again and came back after the storm had passed only to find The Mad Trapper had vanished into the Yukon. But these are Mounties, damnit it, so they followed. Weeks passed, and they couldn’t catch The Mad Trapper. He was seemingly supernatural, making twice the miles per day that the Mounties did with their dogsleds. Eventually, they called in the only guy as awesome as the Mad Trapper, a Canadian hero named Wop May. Wop spotted tracks in the snow that lead to them cornering the Trapper. He is known as a “pillar of the Phoenix [Immigration] bench.” Known for his keen intellect, astute analytical skills, and myopic attention to detail; members of the Immigration Bar describe Judge Hollis as “tough, but fair.” When they knew they were appearing before him, they worked extra hard to be prepared.Judge Hollis served as a mentor and role model for other judges, attorneys, interpreters, clerks and interns. During his tenure as an Immigration Judge, he completed over 16,000 cases. While many considered him conservative, he was the centrist at the Court, insisting on applying and following the rule of law and precedent decisions. Even so, Judge Hollis could, and would, rule contrary to the consensus of his fellow judges, when he believed case law dictated a different outcome. Judge Hollis also served and retired from the United States Army; and served in the United States Air Force as well.The Honorable Wendell A. Hollis was appointed Immigration Judge in January 2003. He was sworn in at the San Francisco Immigration Court by Chief Immigration Judge Michael J. Creppy. From 1999 to January 2003, Judge Hollis served as Deputy District Counsel for the former Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) in Phoenix, Arizona. He served as an assistant district counsel for the INS in Eloy Arizona from 1996 to 1999. From 1994 to 1996, he served as a Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, 3rd Army, Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Georgia. Judge Hollis served as senior defense counsel for the Army’s Trial Defense Services in Wurzburg, Germany from 1992 to 1994. He was the Officer in Charge of the Wiesbaden Legal Center in Germany from 1990 to 1992. He served in various other military positions beginning in 1980.Judge Hollis has served as a spiritual leader in his community and on his job, always available to counsel, pray, and comfort. While attending Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, now deceased Bishop Alexis Thomas requested Judge Hollis create and lead a legal consultation ministry. From that request sprang the Advocacy Ministry which provides an invaluable service to members of Pilgrim Rest. The Advocacy Ministry also hosted numerous public forums and continues to serve the Phoenix Community. Additionally, Judge Hollis developed and established a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at Pilgrim Rest as will, helping church members and members of the public realize thousands of dollars in income tax refunds.In 2013, the Arizona African American Legislative Leadership Conference selected Judge Hollis as an unsung Hero for the Justice Pillar. Judge Hollis is married to the lovely Patricia Hollis (over 38 years), and they are the proud parents of a blended family of 5 children (one deceased), 9 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.

In 1950, Hugh Feagan left the family farm in rural Ontario, Canada, to pursue his dream of joining the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P.). After the long train trip West, Hugh completed his training at Depot Divion in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, and was posted to small communities North of the Arctic Circle. When Hugh retired from the force, the Gwich'n of Fort McPherson, N.W.T., held a feast and made both Hugh and his wife, Marj, honorary members of the Gwich'in Band to recognize their close relationship and service to the indigenous peoples of the Northwest Territories. Kennesaw State University’s ROTC cadets will honor America’s veterans on Thursday, Nov. 10, with a keynote address by Col. John H. Hort, chief of plans, G-3, U.S. Army Forces Command, based at Fort McPherson, Ga. On Friday, Nov. 11, Kennesaw State joins campus and community volunteers across the nation to read the names of the 6,300 casualties of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, now called Operation New Dawn.

In the mist of the uproar after the state of Georgia changed the rules in the Hope Scholarship funding the Hushmo Black Forum as advocates for social justice from the grassroots level , is weighing in. The NAACP is considering, according to the state president Edward DuBose, a boycott of the state lottery; with the black citizens of Georgia spending more money in support of the lottery than any other segment of the population here in the state. We believe another way of playing the hand in which we've been dealt would be to re-visit an old idea, that is for the city of Atlanta to create an entertainment destination center. This entertainment destination center would include a full-scale casino facilities first-rate entertainment and a lottery. We believe that underground Atlanta along with the Fort McPherson property would be ideal locations for such a venue. The proceeds from such a development would be mandated to go 50% to the school system of the city of Atlanta, 25% t would go to the infrastructure repair of the city of Atlanta and the last 25% would go to economic development in depressed neighborhood in the city of Atlanta. We're going to continue to look at the Hope Scholarship mess and posible solutions. We'll also be covering current events.
