Ep 59: Steve Spencer (he/him) on Navigating Biphobia and HIV Stigma

Second Adolescence

September is Bisexuality Visibility Month, and I'm excited to kick it off with this week's guest, Steve Spencer (he/him). Steve is award-winning bi+ and HIV advocate, researcher, and consultant. Steve is a bi, HIV positive man who is doing so much work to advocate for bi+ visibility and action against HIV stigma, and I was eager to have him on to give voice to all of this. In this episode, we hear Steve's personal story of discovering his biness at age 13 but then being told by a well-intentioned but uninformed therapist that he was gay and did not need to pretend he was bi. He went on to spend the next 13 years repressing his biness. Steve shares with us what coming into his biness has been like for him, his experience as a person with positive HIV status, and guides us through wider conversations about biness, HIV, and so much more. I so loved getting time with Steve and think what he's doing is so important, and I'm just so excited to be able to invite you all in to the conversation. About the guest:Steve Spencer is an award-winning bi+ and HIV advocate, researcher, and consultant based on Gadigal Land, Sydney, Australia, and he is a proud ambassador of Qtopia Sydney and the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation.Steve sits on the board of Australia's national peak HIV body, NAPWHA, and is a leading advisor, researcher, and university lecturer in bisexual health and HIV, working with The Kirby Institute, UNSW, and Johns Hopkins University. Steve also uses his large social media following - perfecting the art of discussing serious messages with a sprinkling of thirst traps - to advocate for bi-visibility and action against HIV stigma. Self-acceptance, community, courage, and empathy are at the core of Steve's advocacy and you can follow his work on Instagram @ssstorven.For more, visit www.secondadolescencepod.com and @secondadolescencepod.

Send me a messageToday's guest is Cameron Tonkinwise, a Professor in Design at the University of Technology here in Sydney on unceded Gadigal Land. Those of you who know me have probably either heard me speak about Cameron, have had me introduce Cameron to you or have brought Cameron in to work on a project you're involved in. He is someone I think very highly of and have a very strong regard for.I met Cameron a little over six years ago and we speak a little about how I insisted on us catching up when he had recently emigrated back to Australia from a ten year stint at some of the world's greatest design schools in the US and was at UNSW. That initial coffee in Paddington came after I heard Cameron give a keynote presentation on his work in conceiving what he and his co-creators defined as transition design. His thinking immediately appealed to me, and it still does.I've been really fortunate to work with and spend a lot of time with Cameron since then on all types of problems from domestic violence and financial abuse, to scams and fraud in culturally and linguistically diverse communities, to how to support Australian home dwellers take part in the energy transition, and how to address the growing impacts and risks climate changes poses to those living in harms way. He has been one of the most significant influencers on my career and it's a treat to have him on the show today and introduce him to you.We talk about a whole range of things in this conversation - from what transition is and is not, how visioning and imagination are practices being undermined by education and media systems and incentives and how that drives short terms and myopic decision making, to our own shared failures as professionals and also how emerging practices at the human scale like the cycling coup on the streets of Paris create glimpses of possible and plausible futures we could inhabit. The recording on this episode is a little echoey and I apologise for that. We also had a couple of technical challenges we had to fix on the run and hopefully that doesn't affect your listening experience.I'm really excited to share this conversation with you, share Cameron with you and I hope you glimpse the potential of what could be possible by listening today.Production, graphic and social media support comes from the wonderful Rob Rogers. I couldn't do this without his expertise and generous support.Take care out there, be kind and thanks for listening.Podcast Episode number two guest, Tash Ritz, has released her first book called Souling and as a listener you can get 10% off her book by using the code Finding Nature - all one word - at checkout. This book is phenomenal and valuable for anyone out there who is curious about better understanding themselves and some of the big questions in life - it's part revealing memoir, part helpful guide and part art project that blends the mystical with the tangible. It's a beautiful book, and I highly recommend getting yourself a copy - understanding myself and developing a healthier relationship with who and how I am has been vital in shifting parts of my life over the last couple of months, and I wish I'd had a copy of this book earlier.Head to souling.au to get your copy, and don't forget the FindingNature - all one word - code at checkout for 10% off. Thanks for listening. Jane Harrison is a playwright & author descended from the Muruwari people. She is the author of the internationally acclaimed play Stolen and today I am going to introduce you to the novelisation of her most recent play The Visitors. The Visitors takes us to Gadigal Land in January of 1788. On this sweltering day a strange sight appears in the harbour and immediately spurs the locals into action. Messages are sent to the Nations of the coastal and river regions calling seven men, elders in their clans to congregate and decide what must be done now that The Visitors have returned. My first thoughts as I started reading The Visitors was that this is a story that is both known and completely unknown to me. As I thought back to my education, sparse as it may have been on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, I realised that the landing of Arthur Phillip in what we now call Sydney is not a story that is told as much as it's an assumption that is made and then built upon. The genius of The Visitors is that it not only unpacks those assumptions it seeks to explore the story; the stories of the land and the people before that fateful day. As the group congregate  to consider their options, one man, more thoughtful than his peers considers not just the sight before but its meaning. He asks…”I am wondering… how we will remember this day”. The irony of course is that these words must be put onto the lips of a fictional witness because remembering is not something we do well in this country. In The Visitors Jane Harrison is challenging readers with the omissions in the narrative. We awake on unceded land (as we do each since incidentally) to the surprise and interest of men and women intrigued but also put out by the interruption to their daily lives. We meet each of the emissaries as they prepare for the meeting assembling weapons and considering tactics. It's a particular genius of the novel that it translates the story culturally, allowing the reader to understand the tension and the mundanity of such an important day; we learn of petty differences and old grudges. We come to understand that ceremonies are important but that this doesn't mean someone's not going to interrupt or get impatient. When I looked back on the paucity of education I received about what really happened when British ships invaded these shores, I was struck that in all my learning I was given the impression that the people who arrived were there by right. By consequence this meant that the people they met on the shores were just in the way. In The Visitors Harrison tells a history that shows us these men and women were custodians and lawmakers; tied to their lands and seeking to defend it. The novel asks us to take another look at what we think we know about that history and everything that has been built on it.

The first two come from 'When Breath Meets Air,' a performance event curated by Tina Huang which aims to showcase the power of the spoken word and to highlight why– as Eileen Myles writes, we should “believe in sound.” Why we should believe in the tiniest shakings, in the smells dispersing, in the tingling moments between breath and between air. First we hear from Gomeroi poet, essayist and law academic Alison Whittaker. You can find Alison on Twitter @AJ_Whittaker. Next we hear from human rights activist, poet and writer Sara Saleh. Sara is the daughter of migrants from Palestine, Egypt and Lebanon and is currently living on Gadigal Land. Stephen Page is a force of nature. As artistic director for Bangarra Dance Theatre, he's told the stories of Indigenous Australia through movement, for more than thirty years. Bangarra began in the late 80's, but it was Stephen's appointment as the first Aboriginal artistic director that shaped what it has become today. And the story of Bangarra is not only one of dance, but of brothers. Stephen comes from a big family in Meanjin. A descendent of the Nunukul people and the Munaldjali clan of the Yugambeh Nation. Two of his brothers came with him to Sydney, to Gadigal Land, and would shape what he did from that moment forth. His younger brother Russell was renowned for his incredible talent, and a body that could express story like no other. Older brother David, was the songman. He composed beautiful scores to every Bangarra production, laced with language and culture, until his death in 2016. Stephen has a big story, so I was hugely grateful when he joined me to Take 5 and share it. His theme, was unbroken songs. The music that had marked big moments in his life, and continued the stories of him and his culture.
