In this episode, we dive headfirst into a question that's been buzzing around Ireland recently: Do you have faith in the Irish Police? This topic has gained prominence following a momentous vote of no confidence in Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, which made headlines across the nation. Let's delve into the details. In a startling turn of events, the Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris, found himself facing an overwhelming vote of no confidence. As the GRA (Garda Representative Association) reported, nearly 99% of the 9,129 members polled expressed their lack of confidence in the Garda chief, with just 116 members standing by him.Commissioner Harris, despite the resounding vote, has firmly stated that he will not resign, describing the vote as a "kick in the teeth." He believes it was a personal affront directed at him, but he's resolute in continuing his role. The core of this issue centers around the Commissioner's decision to return to pre-pandemic working hours, known as the Westmanstown Roster, in November. This change, which will see core Garda units working six consecutive days on 10-hour shifts, has sparked considerable concern among rank-and-file Gardaí. They argue that this shift will impact their work-life balance and result in fewer officers on the streets. The situation has intensified due to ongoing recruitment and retention issues, training, suspensions, and member welfare. Amid these challenges, Commissioner Harris has kept a steadfast course, much to the dismay of many Gardaí.Niall opens the phone lines, urging listeners to share their thoughts and experiences regarding the Irish Police. Do you have faith in the Irish Police? Callers share their stories, with a majority expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of police services in the country. They point out issues like underpayment and the dangerous nature of policing in Ireland, where the police are often outnumbered and under-armed compared to criminals. However, some callers step up to defend the police, acknowledging the tough job they do and the sacrifices they make to maintain law and order. As the discussion unfolds, Niall navigates through the contrasting viewpoints, shedding light on the complex relationship between the public and the Irish Police.

The legislation will allow alcohol to be sold and consumed in designated areas outside of pubs and restaurants. Faoin reachtaíocht tabharfar cead alcól a dhíol agus a ól in áiteanna ainmnithe taobh amuigh de thithe tábhairne agus bialanna. Last week, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris issued a guide to Gardaí to use their discretion in relation to outdoor drinking. An tseachtain seo caite, d'éisigh Coimisinéir na nGardaí Drew Harris treoir do Ghardaí chun a ndiscréid a usáid maidir le daoine ag ól taobh amuigh faoin aer. This guide was issued following concerns expressed in Galway when Gardaí in Galway were skeptical about the legality of an outdoor drinking service, a story first revealed by local newspaper An Curadh Connachtach. Éisíodh an treoir sin i ndiaidh gur léiríodh imní sa Ghaillimh nuair a bhí amhras ar Ghardaí sa Ghaillimh maidir le cé chomh dleathach is a bhí seirbhís maidir le bheith ag ól taobh amuigh, scéal a nocht an nuachtán áitiúil An Curadh Connachtach ar dtús. Gardaí in Galway stated that outdoor drinking was only permitted in Galway City if the premises where people were drinking outside had obtained a special license in court or had been permitted by bye-laws. for people to drink outside. Dúirt Gardaí sa Ghaillimh nach raibh cead a bheith ag ól taobh amuigh i gCathair na Gaillimhe ach amháin dá mba rud é go raibh ceadúnas speisialta faighte sa chúirt ag an áitreabh ina raibh daoine ag ól taobh amuigh de nó go raibh cead tugtha faoi fho-dhlithe do dhaoine a bheith ag ól taobh amuigh. The legislation is due to be laid before the Dáil this week and will expire on November 30th unless it is renewed by the Oireachtas for a further 6 months. Tá an reachtaíocht le cur os comhair na Dála an tseachtain seo agus tiocfaidh deireadh léi ar an 30ú Samhain ach amháin sa chás is go ndéanann an tOireachtas í a athnuachan ar feadh 6 mhí eile.

Aonad nua frith-éillithe bunaithe ag an nGarda Síochána. Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has announced the establishment of a new anti- corruption unit to tackle Garda misconduct. D'fhógair Coimisinéir an Gharda Síochána Drew Harris go bhfuil aonad nua frith- éillithe bunaithe ag an bhfórsa le dul i ngleic le mí-iompar Gardaí. The unit was established following an assessment of corruption among the Gardaí. Bunaíodh an t-aonad tar éis measúnú a dhéanamh ar éillitheacht i measc na nGardaí. A new report from the Garda Síochána Inspectorate states that there is a risk that Gardaí may abuse their power to obtain sexual accommodation and that in future it must be ensured that Gardaí adhere to professional practices. Deirtear i dtuarascáil nua ó Chigireacht an Gharda Síochána go bhfuil an baol ann go bhféadfadh Gardaí mí-úsáid a bhaint as an gcumhacht atá acu le garaíocht ghnéis a fháil agus go gcaithfear a chinntiú feasta go gcloífidh Gardaí le nósanna proifisiúnta. At present, the report says, there are shortcomings in drug testing and Garda business activities. Faoi láthair, a deirtear sa tuarascáil, tá easnaimh ann maidir le tástálacha drugaí agus gníomhaíochtaí gnó Gardaí. Commissioner Harris said recommendations on these deficiencies are due to be published shortly. Dúirt an Coimisinéir Harris go bhfui moltaí i dtaobh na n-easnamh seo le foilsiú go luath. The Inspectorate's report also expresses concern that too many court cases are being thrown out because Gardaí do not appear in court when they are called to give evidence. Léirítear imní i dtuarascáil na Cigireachta freisin go bhfuil i bhfad an iomarca cásanna cúirte á gcaitheamh amach mar gheall nach mbíonn Gardaí i láthair sa chúirt nuair atá siad in ainm fianaise a thabhairt. Serious offenses are often thrown out, the Inspectorate says. Cionta tromchúiseacha a chaitear amach go minic, a deir an Chigireacht.
