On an otherwise quiet Wednesday in the village of Abbeylara, County Longford, in April 2000, a man by the name of John Carthy was agitated, pacing his childhood home. Shouting through the window, his cries were barely audible at times over increasing howls of wind. He was armed with a double-barrelled shotgun, which had already been discharged numerous times in the direction of the Gardaí who surrounded the house. By the time Holy Thursday evening arrived, John Carthy would be dead. Mr Carthy, who suffered from bipolar depression and had spent several periods in psychiatric care, fired 30 shots from his home as negotiators tried to mediate with him. The Abbeylara siege, which lasted 25 hours, resulted in Gardai from the ERU discharging four bullets by two separate officers. A judicial inquiry chaired by Mr Justice Robert Barr published a damning report on the Abbeylara siege in 2006. It criticised major shortcomings in the Garda operation, stating that scene commanders had "little training" and "no practical experience" of an armed siege situation. Today on the podcast we are joined by former Dublin Senior Footballer, All Ireland Champion, and published author, Shane Carthy! Shane's story is one that bounces from the highest highs, to the lowest lows. At age 18 he achieved a dream for many football players in becoming an All Ireland Senior Champion, and on paper everything seemed to point towards the beginning of a very happy and successful adult life. However, despite all the external hilights, internally Shane was fighting a battle few people knew about. He speaks so openly about his struggles with depression, which ended up in him spending 11 weeks in St. Patricks Mental Hospital where he slowly but surely began to see light at the end of the tunnel. Since then, Shane has taken his experience going through those times to be a pillar of hope for people who are facing similar situations in their own lives - beginning with delivering speeches and talks, all the way up to releasing his autobiography, 'Dark Blue'. It was a fantastic and refreshing conversation with Shane who pulls no punches in describing what he went through, and I'm sure you'll get loads of value from it! Mental health is such an important topic, and it's so important that conversations like this can be had openly. So please share this with anyone you think might benefit from hearing it :) Enjoy, hope it helps The Molloy Twins

Filmmaker Damian Mc Carthy (ODDITY, CAVEAT) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey and the making of his new feature ODDITY. From the films that scared him and inspired him to become a storyteller of his own… to writing and directing his own short films for the last 2 decades… to how he put together his terrific first feature film (CAVEAT) which had the unfortunate timing of being released right at the height of the global pandemic… to how he buckled down and wrote three new scripts while the rest of the world was shut down and learning how to bake bread or binging TV shows… to how he crafted his screenplay for ODDITY to contain so many genuine scares in a single location setting… to how storyboarding helped him achieve such evocative frames of fear on a tight timeline… to the design of the film's signature “screaming statue”… to what it was like directing one actor playing two roles… to ODDITY's triumphant win of the “Midnighter Award” at South By South West… to the film's theatrical release (it's in theaters now!)… Damian has crafted a ghastly chiller that hits all the right notes! Also, Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a writer trying to get their screenplays in front of the right people.

David Carthy is Managing Partner Ireland of DLA Piper. He was previously a partner at William Fry in Dublin as well as President of the Irish Exporters Association.. He previously spent over 7 years with the Ireland India Business Association where he spent 5 years as Chairman. Our conversation starts with David's path into law and his early focus on the commercial aspects of his practice. He was intentional about building business networks through trade bodies and held various leadership roles in groups that grew in relevance as Ireland's role in international trade increased. Moving to his role as Managing Parter Ireland at DLA Piper we detail how he built the business from scratch - where he was the first employee in 2018 to over 110 lawyers today. He details how he looked to other branch offices of the firm in order to develop a model as to how to grow the Dublin office and began to recruit using a values-based approach. The values that he focuses on are a global perspective - a comfort level with working with team members in a network around the world, as well as a boldness and comfort level with change. Finally, he seeks team members who are genuinely collaborative and go beyond paying lip service to this notion. When the values are aligned around growth, collaboration and reach goals in this way, the organization grows in a cohesive way that can be diverse by design. David describes the intentionality with which he approached developing a diverse workforce and the office has significant female representation at all levels. We end with some words of wisdom relating to the satisfaction of working in teams and the introduction of balance between one's professional and personal life.

New York created history on Saturday by winning the county's first-ever game in the Connacht Senior Football Championship, edging Leitrim in a dramatic penalty shootout - the victory was sealed by the right boot of hometown hero Mike Brosnan who rifled the winning penalty home sparking scenes of wild celebrations as an avalanche of New York supporters surged onto the pitch.I spoke to Shane Carthy after the game who said the win was one of the best moments of his career. Carthy, who won All-Irelands with Dublin in the past, has been commuting from Boston to play with the Empire State and was instrumental in last nights win, getting the equalizing point deep into injury time to send the game to extra time.Goalkeeper Mick Cunningham, who pulled off a number of inspirational saves also joins us towards the end.Stay tuned for more post-match interviews and a full match report on www.thelonghallpodcast.comWATCH ON YOUTUBE HERE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaEOeLjKI5E&t=27s&ab_channel=TheLongHallPodcastThese interviews are being powered by the Laura Dorgan Fitness App, get on top of your fitness and nutrition this summer by emailing lauradorganfitness@gmail.com or visit lauradorganfitmess.com to find out more.
