Our song today is “I'd Rather Have Jesus”."I'd Rather Have Jesus" is a song written by Rhea Miller with the tune written by George Beverly Shea. This poem, penned in 1922, was left on a piano in the Shea home by Shea's mother who wanted her son to find it and change the direction of his life. His mother often would leave poems and quotes around the house that she collected, in order to spiritually guide him.
"The Old Rugged Cross" has been a country gospel favorite ever since it became the title song of Ernest Tubb's 1952 gospel album; it has been performed by some of the twentieth century's most important recording artists, including Al Green, Andy Griffith, Anne Murray, Brad Paisley, Chet Atkins, Chris Barber, John Berry, Floyd Cramer, George Jones, Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash and June Carter, Kevin Max, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Jo Stafford, Gordon MacRae, Merle Haggard, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Ray Price, Ricky Van Shelton, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans,[9] The Oak Ridge Boys, The Statler Brothers, Vince Gill, Willie Nelson, Alan Jackson, George Beverly Shea, James Morrison on the 1990 album "Snappy Doo", and John Prine on the 2007 album "Standard Songs for Average People" with Mac Wiseman. British television dramatist Dennis Potter used the gospel song prominently in several of his plays, most notably Pennies from Heaven (1978); and the song also played a major part in "Gridlock" (2007), an episode of the long-running sci-fi drama series Doctor Who. In early 2009, the song was covered by Ronnie Milsap on his gospel album Then Sings My Soul.

His Voice Was His Ticket to a Career in Radio You may not recognize him at an area mall, but there may not be a more recognizable voice in Christian radio than Wayne Shepherd, who got his first break in radio while studying broadcasting at Cedarville College. From an early age, Wayne knew that he wanted to work in radio. He just didn't know in what capacity. Would he be a producer? Write ad copy for the talented radio hosts? Or, could he be a radio host? It wasn't until his voice changed around 12 years of age that he realized his calling could be in front of the microphone talking with listeners all over the world. And, the experiences he's had during a remarkable 45-year career are astounding. From interviewing Christian leaders like Billy Graham and Luis Palau and interacting with George Beverly Shea, Wayne revels in the many opportunities the Lord has put in his path. He recalls meeting Graham in the Moody Radio network studio in Chicago and hearing the story of how he first met the famous singer for many of his crusades. And, today, part of that memory resides inside of Wayne's residence as he was allowed to have the glass door to George Beverly Shea's office door from his years at Moody Radio. Clearly, with a curiosity-driven mind, Wayne has lived his dream by influencing others through radio. From his start at Cedarville's WCDR Radio to a life-long ministry with the Moody Radio Network, Wayne has faithfully kept listeners aware of world events. This was never more apparent when he and Mark Elfstrand kept their emotions in check so they could inform listeners of the 9/11 terrorist attack — and ask his listeners to pray for the country. Listen to hear Wayne share his story on the Cedarville Stories Podcast.
Today - we'll investigate how we can worship our Lord through song. You don't have to have the voice of Mahalia Jackson or George Beverly Shea in order to worship God. It's more your attitude than anything else.
Did you ever go to a Billy Graham crusade and hear George Beverly Shea sing Victory in Jesus? OK, maybe that was before your time. But the moment was electrifying as thousands and thousands of people gathered. The Billy Graham crusades highlighted victory in Jesus. Billy Graham would get up and talk about the cultural problems we face, idols, and then launch into a gospel message. Jesus is always the answer on top of Mount Caramel. Elijah pronounces victory over a society that has gone astray, the sacrifices split from fire, coming from heaven, which ultimately was a precursor to the greatest sacrifice of all. Mount Caramel will forever be remembered as the mountain of victory. Many years later, and even greater, victory will come on Mount Calvary.
George Beverly Shea and a flat tire remind me of an important principle.

How different would our lives be if we asked God to set things anew and sincerely mean it? Would our daily routines look the same? Would our attitudes remain as they are? When we ask God to hit our “Reset” button we are giving Him permission to help us live out our lives as new creations in Christ. Life is not about doing it all on our own. God is here to help you be reset to be more like Him! Today, Pastor Phil Diaz of Greencastle Church Of The Nazarene talks about how a "Re-set" of our pride and selfishness will help us grow in our walk and maturity in the faith. The disciples wanted Jesus to operate within the means of an earthly kingdom with placements for them on his left and right side to rule over the many. Yet, what Jesus points to, is how His kingdom is not of this world and will not operate in the way any earthly kingdom does! It's an upside-down kingdom where humility trumps arrogance and pride. There is a place for you here at Greencastle Church Of The Nazarene! Note: We do not own the rights to any music. "I'd Rather Have Jesus" is written by Rhea F. Miller and George Beverly Shea. Podcast Introduction I'm so glad you're here today! A lot of you are new listeners, and it really thrills my heart to have you aboard. There's a lot of stuff going on in the world today, and I believe with every fiber of my being that the Bible has the answers that so many people are looking for today. Specifically, I believe…no, I know from personal experience, that a personal relationship with Jesus is the way to have peace in your heart in the midst of the chaos and turmoil that is currently happening around us. This is the daily podcast where we will read the *entire* Bible in a year. If you've never read the entire Bible, or if never read the Bible before, I hope that as we go through it, I can make this year informative and even entertaining as I talk about what we're reading each day. I'm always open to your comments, and I'll read some of them on the show. You can comment at comment.lifespringmedia.com Today, we are going to read from the book of Isaiah, chapters 1-6. I'll be reading from the NIV, after which I'll share some comments. After that, we'll have the “On This Day In Church History” segment, and then “Prayer Requests” Introduction to Isaiah This book is the first of what are considered the books of prophecy. Most people, when they hear the word “prophecy” think of telling the future. And sometimes it does, but that is only a part of prophecy. A biblical prophet is a person who speaks for God. God has actually given them a specific message, usually for a specific person or specific group of people, and he tasks the prophet to deliver the message. By the way, the prophet Isaiah was a little bit like the Billy Graham of his time. Billy Graham counseled every president from Harry S. Truman to Barak Obama…twelve consecutive presidents. His active ministry years stretched from 1943 to 2013, seventy years. (As an aside, I had the privilege to interview Dr. Graham's longtime friend and musical director, George Beverly Shea on the Lifespring! podcast in 2006. Here's the link.) Isaiah's ministry lasted from about 740 BC to around 680 BC, roughly 60 years. And unlike some other biblical prophets, he had personal access to the kings of his day. And like Billy, Isaiah maintained an international perspective throughout his book. Of course, with a sixty year ministry, God gave Isaiah more than one message. Isaiah spoke to the people about caring for the poor and needy, following God's instructions on how to live, and pursuing social and economic justice. And he spoke of coming judgement because of Israel's failure. But, and this is important, he also spoke of God's promise to restore Israel if and when they would turn from their errant ways and return to Him. Thoughts On Isaiah I like the way chapter two ends: 22Stop regarding man, whose breath of life is in his nostrils; For why should he be esteemed? Isaiah 2:22 NASB The NIV says is a bit more clearly: 22Stop trusting in mere humans, who have but a breath in their nostrils. Why hold them in esteem?Isaiah 2:22 NIV Beloved, I am as interested in politics as anybody else is. These days, it's hard to escape political talk. But we need to keep in mind that no politician, no supposed “leader” is going to save us. No president, no governor, no prime minister, no king will ever come up with a plan to right the wrongs or save the economy. The sooner we recognize this, the sooner we will be able to look to the One who has the answer. That One is the King of kings. Don't misunderstand. I am not advocating for a theocracy run by religious zealots. When Jesus walked the earth, some of his followers thought He was going to establish an earthly kingdom, and when it became clear that his mission did not include that agenda, one of the twelve disciples, Judas, betrayed him into the hands of those who ultimately crucified Him. Jesus' mission was to bring the message of salvation, not of conquest.
• This Series: In many ways, hymns are the oral history of our faith. Like the Psalms in the Bible, they are passed from generation to generation and sung in cathedrals, chapels, churches and sometimes around a family piano. This How Sweet the Sound series delves into some of those classic hymns and explore the story behind these songs. We hope it will also breathe new life into their melodies to illuminate the hope they have for us today. • This Week: A Swedish editor and future politician, Carl Boberg, encountered a tremendous storm while walking home one day. As Carl ran for shelter, he was awed as the lightning flashed, thunderclaps shook the air. When the storm relented, he rushed home and wrote a simple poem about this event. This poem was called O Store Gud which means, O Mighty God. This poem became a song that was then translated into German and Russian before finally translated into English. It lived in rather obscurity until a singing cowboy evangelist in India heard it and brought it back to the United States. In 1949 it received a new title. In 1954, George Beverly Shea introduced it to Billy Graham who loved it so much he brought to his New York City Crusade where 93 million people heard it. Elvis Pressley sang it and won a Grammy and Carrie Underwood topped the chart with her rendition of it in 2011. It is now regarded as the #2 all-time favorite hymn in the world - How Great Thou Art. Key Phrase: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars, which you have set in place…” Psalm 8:3
One time a guy came up to me while playing at Mayo Clinic, thanking me for my playing, and he said that he was one of Dino's assistant. He was from New York, and had come all the way to Arizona to go to Mayo Clinic. He told me that he went to college with Dino, but he didn't tell me his name. It was nice to meet someone who was so close to this arranger who I appreciate so much. I play a lot of his arrangments. This hymn is based on a Swedish traditional melody and a poem written by Carl Boberg in Mönsterås, Sweden, in 1885. It was translated into German and then into Russian. Then it was translated into English from the Russian by English missionary Stuart K. Hine, who also added two original verses of his own. It was popularised by George Beverly Shea and Cliff Barrows during the Billy Graham crusades. This is also something I wanted to play for the family of Jeffrey D'Aleo. He passed away at the age of 58, on February 4, 2021. His wife Michelle Turner is my cousin. Many thoughts and prayers to her and her family. As we come upon Easter, this piece is a good reminder that God not only sent Jesus here and let him be crucified on a cross, but then he raised Him from the dead!
A FRIEND IN JESUS

I was introduced to the gospel of Jesus Christ while in high school. My life was radically changed, July 3, 1964, during a family camp in Sanders, Idaho. After coming home from that camp I would occasionally visit the home of some new friends made at the camp. Jim became a very good friend. His dad was a pastor on the north side of Spokane, Washington. Dale and his wife were the youth leaders at the church in Spokane Valley where I was attending regularly. He worked for Armor Meats in Spokane. Going to the home of these two friends was an amazing experience for me. Walking into their house was like walking into a sanctuary. There was an atmosphere very different from anything I had known. The light in the house was brighter. I heard George Beverly Shea for the first time at Jim’s house. His mom loved the music of this man who sang for Billy Graham. I heard intercessory pray for the first time while visiting Dale’s home. It was more than the music or hearing someone praying, it was a powerful awareness of being in a holy place. There was peace, yet more than peace, it was serenity. This was totally foreign to me, but fully aware this was a Christian home. While, uncomfortable at first, it was good and I was drawn to their presence more and more. I wanted what they had in my life. How Well Does Your Life Reflect God's Presence? That is what Jesus was talking about when He said: "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:13-16 NKJV). The light was shining bright in these homes. It revealed how much darkness was in my own. The salt was very tasty in these godly families and I wanted more. That is what our Lord was talking about. Every disciple is to be a sanctuary, the temple of the Holy Spirit, filled and overflowing with the presence of God. The Apostle Paul said this is the mystery of the ages, that God would not dwell in a tent, a golden box, or a building on a mountain. He would dwell in the hearts of men and women, “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” You would be the temple, the sanctuary, the holy place. When a man and a woman, filled with the presence of Holy Spirit, unite in the covenant of marriage, their home becomes a sanctuary filled with the presence of Christ. All who enter that home become intimately aware they have stepped out of a world of darkness and entered a sanctuary of God’s presence. This does not happen just because two people who profess they believe in Jesus get married and start a family. There is a conscious choice made by the man and the woman to make their heart a living temple of the Holy Spirit. They choose to make Him the very source of their life. His love, His peace, His joy fills and overflows their life on a daily basis. His gentleness His longsuffering His goodness His faithfulness His self-control determines their actions and behavior. Together, they make the choice to fill their house with that same fruit of the Spirit; by the way they speak and treat one another. The life of prayer and worship fill the atmosphere of that home with the very presence of Holy Spirit. The music they play, the movies they watch, the decorations and wall hangings do not distract from or hinder the Spirit in their home. Rather, they aid and assist in establishing the awareness this is a sanctuary of God. Too often decorating the temple of Holy Spirit has been confused with legalism. When a child of God becomes fully aware their body is, indeed, the house where Holy Spirit abides, a conscious decision should be made to nurture His presence and increase His influence over that temple. Such a decision will greatly impact the way they decorate the house of the Lord. They will intentionally seek to reflect the holiness of His godly presence. They will do nothing to distract from Him or to hinder His reflection from their life. Their behavior, actions and words will reflect His light. His influence and presence will be a divine flavoring in all they say and do. Everyone around them will see the light and taste the presence of Holy Spirit in them. That atmosphere will be present in even greater measure to everyone who steps into the home of such disciples of Jesus Christ. Their very presence will make an impact in the neighborhood. Friends and family who come to their home will be greatly touched by the serenity, love, and grace that fill the atmosphere of that home.
