In today's episode we sit down and connect with Malika Ali, the Chief Innovation Officer at the Highlander Institute. Malika's transgenerational story is rooted in the pursuit of education, and she shares with us how the passion of past generations drives her own desire to empower students. She connects that curriculums need to provide both, windows and mirrors, for students so they can see themselves and better understand how they fit into the world. Malika highlights the importance of letting students “drive more” and the need to create relevant learning environments around them. Malika is passionate about community-driven change management to scale and sustain culturally responsive education driven by a liberatory data approach. As the Chief Innovation Officer at the Highlander Institute, she leads program visioning articulated through a comprehensive model for school change. She was a Rhode Island District Teacher of the Year, served on Governor Raimondo's STEAM and Equity in Educator Preparation Committee, and was named one of the nation's top emerging and inspirational Black leaders in education innovation by Learn Launch. Malika holds an M.Ed. in Education Policy and Management from Harvard Graduate School of Education and a B.A. in Public Health from Brown University. As a daughter of strong and brilliant Eritrean refugees, Malika has spent her life critiquing the systems that perpetuate educational inequity, and she is proud to be a part of the struggle to ensure that all children have access to, and can take advantage of, an empowering education. Covering everything from Point Judith fishermen to the Station nightclub fire, she heard the stories of Rhode Islanders – their struggles and their triumphs – firsthand. She began her state service at the Rhode Island Department of Corrections, learning what it takes to run a complicated public safety system and increasing her understanding of the critical balance between criminal justice and social justice.Joy moved on to serve the people of the 2nd District, while working for Congressman Jim Langevin, and where she worked as part of a team that built coalitions, passed complex legislation, and, most importantly, stood up for the people of the 2nd District. You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that The Providence Bruins began operation for the start of the 1992–93 AHL season after Providence mayor Buddy Cianci negotiated a deal with the owners of the Maine Mariners franchise to relocate their club? The move saw AHL hockey return to Providence for the first time since the Providence Reds, a founding member of the AHL, left town in 1977. Now for our feature story: Rhode Island Lt. Gov. Dan McKee said he wants cities and towns to become more involved in the COVID-19 vaccination effort to help speed up distribution once more shots become available. McKee said Friday that he hopes to expand the state's capacity to get shots in arms after he takes over from Gov. Provi. McKee said that cities and towns “are going to be a big part of that,” in a virtual meeting with his COVID-19 advisers. “We need to use our communities to create this 9/11 moment where we bring people together in a way that we are rallying around an enemy, and COVID is the enemy, and we are going to beat that enemy,” McKee said. The Democrat did not provide more detail about his plans for cities and towns, but he said he will continue to use state vaccination sites created under the Raimondo administration. McKee has been critical of the state's vaccination efforts, which he has said are moving too slowly. Governor Raimondo is leaving her post after being chosen by President Joe Biden to lead the United States Commerce Department. And for more about the latest covid stories in and around Westerly, head over to westerlysun.com. There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from Shelter Harbor Golf Club in Charlestown. They're looking for experienced bartenders. It’s April 28th, 2020, and we’re a few months into the Covid-19 pandemic. Here in Rhode Island we’ve been under a stringent, stay-and-home order for the past 30 days. States across the country are starting to consider when and how to responsibly lift these restrictions. Yesterday, Governor Raimondo released a framework for how to reopen the state, called “Reopening RI: Charting the Course.” It describes three phases of progression, and the metrics we’ll monitor to know when to move from one phase to the next. Today we’re joined by Dr. James McDonald, Medical Director of Rhode Island's Department of Health, to talk about that framework and give a picture of what life might look like over the coming weeks and months, depending on how Covid-19 evolves. On the Brink with Andi Simon

Stefan Pryor describes how Rhode Island became a leading state for business! You may not have noticed but Rhode Island is on a roll. In just three years, America's smallest state has moved up 10 spots in Chief Executive’s 2018 “Best and Worst States for Business,” the most dramatic climb of any of the 50 states. Why and how is what today's podcast is about. I have the honor of interviewing Secretary of Commerce for Rhode Island, Stefan Pryor, and our conversation is as relevant for our SAMC higher education clients as it is for businesses that need to reinvigorate their growth in fast-changing times. It's a podcast we hope you share with leaders of other states, counties and municipalities seeking to transform their local economies.  The secret to growth? Stop looking at the past and see what can happen, as  Rhode Island did.  Just four years ago, Rhode Island had the highest unemployment rate in the nation. It was the last state to recover from the great recession. Businesses were reluctant to set up shop there. Without a doubt, Rhode Island needed an overhaul. But first, it needed to write a new story worth telling. Enter Stefan Pryor, Rhode Island’s first Secretary of Commerce. Appointed by Governor Gina M. Raimondo in 2015 and confirmed unanimously by the Rhode Island State Senate, Secretary Pryor oversees and coordinates the state agencies and offices responsible for economic development, business regulation, housing and workforce development. As Secretary Pryor told Chief Executive magazine in 2018:  "Governor Raimondo had the courage to tell it like it is: The future of our state was on the line, and she laid out the facts, and ensured that the public had an understanding of what it would take to put us on a strong fiscal footing. In partnership with the [legislature] we’ve done so, and thanks to them, we’ve been able to place important new tools in the economic-development tool box.”  In our talk today, Secretary Pryor shares the ways in which you can generate the power of a new story, a new brand. Re-branding Rhode Island is exactly what Governor Raimondo did. The results? The CEO of Virgin Pulse, a global software company, recently moved its headquarters to downtown Providence from Framingham, Mass. Wexford Science & Technology is partnering with Brown University to create a “knowledge community” around the school’s $220-million redevelopment of an old power station on the Providence River. Finales Coffee has opened a development site for a new line of teas. And Johnson & Johnson is moving there, too. All in all, 30 businesses have announced plans to land or expand in Rhode Island since Governor Raimondo’s new programs were implemented four years ago. In fact, Rhode Island's incredible economic progress under Governor Raimondo has been profiled by national publications including Chief Executive magazine (“Rhode Island Boasts The Biggest Climb In ‘Best States / Worst States’ Rankings”) and The New York Times (“After Long Economic Slide, Rhode Island Lures New Business”).   Some of the core themes we discuss include:  Begin with: What do you have that others might not? For Rhode Island, it has great universities that are putting talented graduates into the work pipeline. They have amazing medical centers. And are perfectly positioned near Cambridge and Boston. The state's leaders found important ways to bring together different sectors and stakeholders who are working together to bring innovative new businesses and technological solutions to the region to help companies get the resources they need to soar. The legislature knew that it had to change and is now working hand-in-hand with the governor to find solutions for growth, not build walls inhibiting it. Decision-makers created an innovation team that thinks big, thinks forward and creates contagious excitement around successes, one small win at a time.  I know you will enjoy listening to our conversation. Think about the lessons learned for you, your own business, your own community, and remember, they can be your new story as well as Rhode Island’s.  Some background on Secretary Pryor and his earlier successes are very important as a learning ground for his work in Rhode Island.  From 2011-2015, Secretary Pryor served as the Commissioner of Education for the State of Connecticut. During his tenure, Connecticut passed important legislation aimed at closing achievement gaps, improving chronically under-performing schools and districts, enhancing educator effectiveness, and increasing opportunities for all students. From 2006-2011, Pryor served as Deputy Mayor and Director of Economic and Housing Development in the City of Newark, NJ. He and his team played a key role in orchestrating plans for Newark’s first new downtown hotel in 40 years and first new office tower in 20 years. They also helped recruit new commercial tenants to Newark, including Panasonic (North American headquarters) and Manischewitz (world headquarters).  From 2002-2006, Pryor served in a number of leadership capacities at the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC), culminating in becoming LMDC’s President. Created in the aftermath of September 11th by the State and City of New York, LMDC planned and helped coordinate the physical rebuilding and economic revitalization of Lower Manhattan, including the World Trade Center site. Previously, Pryor served as a Vice President at the Partnership for New York City where he led the organization’s public education initiatives, including a program which worked with two low-performing, high-poverty NYC school districts. Pryor received his undergraduate and law degrees from Yale University.  3 podcasts on leadership you might enjoy: Steve Smith—What Emerging Leaders Need To Be Effective In Today's Workplace Kimberly Davis—Leading Change: Are You A Brave Leader? Original Episode Title: Talking Black Businesses and More with Lisa Ranglin: Sonic Watermelons, July 26, 2016 *** Original Episode Date: Tuesday, July 26, 2016 *** Name of Guest: Lisa Ranglin, President, RI Black Business Association *** Original Episode Summary: What else can we do? From the the counter-top sit-ins we saw during the Civil Rights movement of yesteryear, to the Black Lives Matter demonstrations we've seen recently across the country and globe, "what else can we do" is a question that many have asked following mass protests and direct action campaigns held for decades. Consider this for a contemporary look: In the days and weeks since the killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile by police, social media sites and Black news spaces have posted about the need to support Black businesses and Black-owned banks as one way to do more to support and bring resources to the Black community. But here in RI, one question to ask is how are Black businesses doing? Today we talk to Lisa Ranglin, President of the Rhode Island Black Business Association (RIBBA) to learn about what it's like to open and run a business in RI and what it's like when you are a Black or Brown person, woman, and/or other underrepresented entrepreneur? We'll also discuss the purpose and function of the RI Black Business Association, and we'll talk about the kinds of people, members, and/or partners that support RIBBA? We'll also talk to Lisa about what current candidates should consider from the point of view of the Black business community and we'll ask her about someone special in her life participating in the upcoming elections! What else can you do? Tune in to Sonic Watermelons. *** Contact Info for Guest(s): www.ri-bba.com www.twitter.com/ribbabiz www.facebook.com/RhodeIslandBlackBusinessAssociation 401-383-1179 *** More Info About the Guest, Topics and/or Podcast: Three thousand, three hundred and sixteen: that is the number of Black owned businesses in RI, and one way to reach them is the Rhode Island Black Business Association (RIBBA) according to Lisa Ranglin, President of RIBBA. Ranglin joined Sonic Watermelons on July 26, 2016 to talk more about her organization and about the different challenges facing Black entrepreneurs and Black-owned business in RI and the services designed to avoid or overcome them. Some of those challenges include the lack of access to capital and contracts, says Ranglin, despite various laws and policies requiring a minimum number of contracts be made to women and minority-owned firms. Ranglin says that even in the present year, Governor Raimondo talks frequently about attracting new businesses to the state at the same time that there is a need to invest in micro-companies that are already here in RI. Saying you can’t find qualified people of color isn’t enough, says Ranglin, especially when there are organizations like RIBBA and events like their Annual Awards Gala,, coming up this year on Friday October 7th, 2016. There are also a number of other initiatives, hashtags and activities that have risen up (#buyblack; #bankblack), inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and/or a desire to better catalogue and, therefore support, Black-owned businesses and communities disproportionately affected by police brutality.
