In the suburbs of New Jersey, where temple gossip flows like Manischewitz wine, eleven-year-old Andy becomes entangled in a whirlwind of maternal quirks and religious intrigue. His mother's bizarre obsession with Rabbi Landy transforms their once-quiet life above a candy store into a tale of surprises.Andy's world features a colorful cast: a fiery sister, an invisible brother, a precociously sexual savant best friend with green teeth, and a foul-mouthed neighbor who rivals the 50-Foot Woman. As he navigates from confusion to understanding, his journey is filled with humor and heartfelt moments. When forced into yeshiva with the rabbi's insufferable sons, Andy becomes drawn to his magnetic Talmud teacher, Rabbi Loobling. His exploration of faith, desire, and family secrets unfolds from the streets of the Garden State to the halls of college, revealing the complex adults around him.Rabbis of the Garden State delivers a sharp look at synagogue life laced with teenage yearning. This powerful portrayal of suburban Jewish life in the '60s is both funny and moving. As Andy transitions to adulthood, the mysteries of childhood unravel, exposing secrets and deep truths about family, faith, and the unexpected twists of love. Daniel Meltz's beautifully crafted debut novel captures the spirit of an era and delves into the timeless questions of belonging, belief, and the complicated relationships that shape us all.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Beacon actors working on returning show to stage In 2001, after Reefer Madness: The Musical had run for nearly two years in Los Angeles, its actors and backers built up big expectations for the show's off-Broadway premiere. Then, four days before curtain, 9/11 happened. "All of a sudden, a comedy about questioning and criticizing authority lost its vibe," recalls Christian Campbell, who created the lead role of Jimmy Harper on stage and later screen. Now, with recreational marijuana legal in many parts of the country (including New York) and lampooning business and government figures a staple of the entertainment world, Campbell is part of a production group eyeing a revival. "We have horses running in New York and London and look to line up investors," he says. "This is the most relevant show out there, by far. It's based on a kitschy film, but it's really about misinformation and propaganda." Campbell and his sister, Neve Campbell, are third-generation actors. He's married to actor America Olivo, who is also helping to revive the musical, along with actors Alan Cumming and Kristen Bell, director Andy Fickman and Dan Studney, who wrote the book and music. The song-and-dance version of Reefer Madness, originally a campy, preachy 1936 film about the dangers of cannabis that developed a cult following, opened in 1998 in Los Angeles. Its ill-fated New York run in 2001 lasted only a few weeks. Four years later, Showtime aired Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical, also starring Campbell. In 2014, the movie cast reunited to support the BabyQuest Foundation, a nonprofit that helps couples with fertility treatments. Campbell and Olivo had difficulty conceiving a child, but five years ago a "miracle baby" arrived. The couple, who got engaged two weeks after meeting, moved north from Hell's Kitchen on a whim in 2016. "We kept hearing about Beacon at parties and planned to visit Dia," Campbell says. "Four hours after arriving, we put an offer on the place. So far, we've done well with our eye-blink decisions." Taking advantage of the shift in current events and the 25th anniversary of the initial play's awards, a new cast in 2024 revived Reefer Madness: The Musical in Los Angeles, where it ran for four months. A soundtrack album was released on Jan. 10 (see reefermadness.com). For the moment, Campbell has paused his thespian career, which included most recently the lead in Beacon resident Jeremy Schonfeld's The Father Who Stayed and a year on his mother Marnie Neve's favorite soap opera, All My Children, as the fourth incarnation of Bobby Womack. "We laugh at the fact that a character can disappear for a long time without explanation and just come back as a completely new person who doesn't even resemble the actor that previously played the part," he says. "My guy had blond hair and blue eyes and one day he went up into the attic to get some ski equipment and never came down. Years later, he magically reappears - as me." Acting on a soap opera, he says, is "one of the hardest gigs there is - I gained new respect for the craft. You have to turn water into some form of wine. It may taste like Manischewitz in the end, but at least it's better than before."

Snuffy Walden Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson There are no accidents. House stand-in as he so aptly named hisslef, Emmy-Winning Composer, Snuffy Walden, was just what the doctor ordered. Live from the dining room, with Rufus for the most part chillin' between us, Snuffy got down, got real, letting us in as he seamlessly weaved through music, alcoholism, geographics, hitting big, breaking bad, highs, lows, getting sober, switching gears, success beyond his imaginings, the pandemic abyss, to slowly stepping back out amidst life's challenges. From piano to trombone, finding guitar, playing with BJ Thomas at 14 and strip clubs at 17, DJing, to living in a park with a roadie, Aphrodite in Denver to fronting Stray Dog, rocking like hell, and opening for Emerson, Lake & Palmer around the world, a near-miss with me in '74, drinking and debauchery, recording Songs in The Key of Life with Stevie Wonder, earning a platinum record, being in the passenger seat when Stevie drove––oh yes, he did; playing with Dave Mason at the peak, Chaka Kahn when she was breaking I Feel For You, touring with Eric Burdon and having an epiphany, thanks to longtime friend and bandmate, Michael Ruff, which would change, and save, his life. With all his success before, a few years later, without experience or training, he scored Thirty Something, then The Wonder Years, both Emmy nominees their first year, then meeting Sorkin and doing Sports Night, and then The West Wing, where he won that Emmy with his iconic main title, and then a dozen other Emmy nominations and 51 BMI Awards, representing over a hundred other shows… then the pandemic slowdown to almost shut down, and a recent rebirth doing what he loves and loving what he's doing, committed to turning up the joy in the monitors, because of and in spite of recent news. Snuffy's humility, humanity, and heart soar in his words and music. His dedication to being of service, hIs talent, and his sweetness, are ongoing inspirations to me and countless others. I neglected to say Happy Passover. Historically I've been a second-nighter, and this year is no exception. Tomorrow, Snuffy will be attending his first Seder. Hide the Manischewitz. From both of us. How to Act Like You Know What You're Doing at a Wine Event

Happy New Year everyone! So a few days ago, I was super psyched to learn that my jazz ensemble was booked for the 2022 Boston Food and Wine Festival jazz brunches, to be held at one of my favorite locations, The Boston Harbor Hotel. With wine on my mind, I thought I’d do a post on it, especially since a lot of folks are curious.  As it so happens, I’m married to a wine and whisky aficionado, Jeff Hunter. Now this isn’t a proper interview at all.  We were about to settle down for the season finale of Mandalorian when it occurred to me I should see if Jeff was up for an impromptu interview, something he is more predisposed to do with a glass in hand.  He was.  So while he prepared for us to sample 2018 vintage Cabernet Sauvignon from two very different locales, one from Alexander Valley Vineyards California, the other from Penley Estate Phoenix Australia , I grabbed a mic. I know wine events can be daunting.  There’s the odd swish and sniff of glasses; the confident gargle, and the spit.  And what about the knowing look you get when you opt to swallow your sip ‘coz goodness knows you’ve paid good money for this!   And then there’s the jargon—  “structured,” “hint of oak,”  “tannic,” that defines moments of deliberation. It’s easy to forget that a wine palate is cultivated.  Unless vinification is a family business or inherent in your culture, there’s a big chance your first sip of wine was disappointing and far from how you imagined it to be.  My parents let us have a sip or two when we were kids and I did not understand what the big to-do was.  Even in my college days it wasn’t something I enjoyed though I learned to tolerate it because I badly wanted to travel to Europe and I thought wine was something everyone had with their meals.  In the 70’s and 80’s in Manila, I remember drinking Blue Nun Riesling and Cold Duck champagne in our family events. Paul Masson Chablis was the main wine served at my 18th birthday party debut, an important milestone in Filipino society.   At the time, and in a nation of beer and whisky drinkers, any wine at a party was impressive, even if they all tasted like tart juice or downright vinegary. In a hot tropical country like the Philippines where houses don’t have basements, cellars, cool pantries,  nor any concept of proper storage, it’s highly likely we’d been blissfully toasting with turned wines and thinking that was cool.So we all start somewhere and my first point is, wherever you are in your wine journey is okay.  Second, over time and as you explore a breadth of varieties, your palate will evolve.  What you find pleasant today may not be so tomorrow, and the opposite could also be true. Third, what is considered “good,” even by experts, need not be expensive.  Though price point can be indicative of quality, it is also affected by supply (limited production usually is pricier), brand name, popularity and other factors that have nothing to do with quality.  Wine regions like Bordeaux (France) or Napa Valley (US) have more cachet with some people than Australian or Argentinian wines, hence my earlier example of two 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon wines we were comparing, both very good and under $20, with the Penley Estate Phoenix Australia rated #69 in the Wine Enthusiast top 100 wines.Learning about wines is fun and a lifetime activity. While I can barely remember vineyard names, I know what I like, am confident about food pairing , and am more articulate about my descriptions, which means, I can pretty much fake my way in an event.  I’m fortunate to have learned from others and most especially Jeff, who often cooks dishes with particular libations in mind, such as this evening’s Seafood Cioppino paired with 2006 Constanti Brunello di Montalcino, which means, a lot of our dinners are mini wine tasting events.  Since I have a resident (literally) wine expert on board, and he now has the mic, let’s see what he has to say.  Bear in mind, we’ve had a few glasses at this point.Marlene:  So I’m here with Jeff, an avid wine and whisky collector, purveyor in auctions and former wine consultant.  So Jeff, tell us a bit more about your passion for wine.Jeff: Oh, good evening. Thanks, Marlene. Thanks for the nice introduction. My name is Jeff, Jeff Hunter, and I've enjoyed wine for many years.  I can recall the first case I got of an older Bordeaux that I kept in my parents’ basement. And that was kind of the beginning to my desire to collect. I just love the smell of the case of wine, the wood, the ability to taste that wine over the course of many dinners, as it evolved, and how long it would age and trying to correctly predict when I would drink it.Marlene:  What kind of wines should we be looking at?Jeff: Okay, we're gonna talk about popular wines or those that are less discovered at Wine Festivals. So if you're a curious person, and you would be interested in trying different regions, Lebanon, has some interesting things that are coming out. Israel as well has some fabulous Cabs. So explore. I'm not too familiar with Greece and Italy was always a mystery to me. But the more I've tried and the more I've looked at the maps of the different landscapes and wine producing regions of the various countries, the more I've gotten to appreciate all the things that make up the different wines of Italy, let's say,  France, as well, obviously, with many different wine producing regions, so great to be an explorer. And there's a lot of great wines being produced today around the world.Marlene: Any favorites?Jeff: Personally, I've been really enjoying something that's not as popular as it used to be. That's the Australian Cabernets and Shiraz. I just love those big, jammy, bomb-y types of wines and the concentration and the freshness of fruit that I find in some of them. So it's been kind of fun enjoying those, otherwise I go to, for sure, vintage Bordeaux.  Always buy the good years, sit on them, give them time, 5-10 years to come around. So get them early and be patient. Marlene: What about unusual wines? Jeff: I think that as esoteric wines go, the Tokaj of Hungary can be quite fascinating. And I was able to purchase six bottles of the Essencia of Pajzos from Tokaj, and that's the best of the best. It's a 1993 Vintage Robert Parker who's the wine critic gave it an O M G 100 points. Said it tasted like heaven. Amazing wine. Residual sugar is sky high but yet there's still some crisp snap through all the apricot flavor. Amazing wine.  I think I paid $125 a bottle with a discount should be about $300 to 500 at this point in 2022.Marlene:   Lots of people are curious about wine events.  For those who’ve never been to one, can you perhaps give an idea on what they can expect?Jeff: Going to wine festivals has always been a fun thing. I've always enjoyed the opportunity to taste many wines and a big gathering. And my favorite way of doing this is to have a friend who works in the wine industry and then have him get you in for free as his roadie; you can help him bring his wines in, and then maybe even help pour some of his wines, and then get to go in and check everything out for free. That's my favorite way to go into wine festivals.Marlene: Ok, ok, let’s be serious.  If it was for like, you know, just a regular Joe, how would it be?Jeff:  Of course yeah. You know I do love wine festivals and my approach to attending a wine festival based on the limited amount of time I have with so much to taste. And so I would recommend getting in doing your research. Look at the listing, see who's attending, see who's pouring, see who's pouring what. Stay away from the pedestrian wines, focus on your whites first. So you don't ruin your palate. Get around, it doesn't matter if the table has red or white just stay with the whites. You can always come back for the Reds later. And then just keep moving through the festival. Don't get bogged down. And as the more you taste and don't forget to spit because the more you taste, the more you can become a little bit more friendly with all the participants and lose valuable time-- tasting time. Focus on the big boys at the end, the big reds, and make sure you get them before they run out because the popular ones do go fast. Marlene: Thank you, Jeff.  So let me clarify. Jeff’s point is to maximize time at a wine event, and he’s just outlined an efficient way to go about it, if that’s your goal. 1.     Do a bit of homework so you can home in on what you really want to try, to avoid palate fatigue and being too inebriated to appreciate what you’re consuming.2.     Spit.  You can’t taste a whole lot of wines and be sober otherwise.  In other words, though ruthless: Not spitting = inebriation= friendliness=waste of tasting time3.     Start with whites and end with reds.  The reverse will ruin your palate for whites. Now most of us don’t approach wine events with Jeff’s single-minded efficiency, nor should you, unless you are a collector.  For everyone else, I’d say, go where you will, listen to the wine curators, ask questions (they love this) and meet people.  Have fun. And if you’re worried about looking gauche, here are a few tips:1.     Hold wine glasses by the stem, not the glass, so you don’t warm the wine (or get fingerprints on glass)2.     Swish the wine in the glass to aerate and release the bouquet; sniff to appreciate.  Note what you’re smelling—apricots, raspberries, etc.3.     Sip together with a slight breath in, and swish around the back of your mouth for aeration.  It looks and sounds a bit like a gargle, but isn’t. It’s not a pretentious action.  Retronasal olfaction is smelling and tasting from the back of your mouth, and better perceived when wine is aerated.4.     Spit.  In bucket.5.     Describe what you smell and taste with fellow participants and wine curators so you can build your wine vocabulary.6.     And finally, if like my sister, Manischewitz is your favorite wine, never admit it. In the holiday aisle of certain supermarkets, next to the chocolate Maccabees and Star of David cookies, you can find a "Hanukkah house cookie kit". A Jewish cousin to the classic Christmas gingerbread house, the DIY craft-meets-treat trend has sprung up in recent years, seeming more prominent now than ever before. And, it turns out, they're made in Canada. Their maker is Give & Go Prepared Foods, a pastry-producing corporation based in Ontario, whose CEO is Joel Flatt, son of the late Canadian philanthropist couple Ab and Phyllis Flatt. This holiday season, their cookie-cutter houses are being sold in the United States under different names for different outlets, including for Manischewitz. Is it another example of Hanukkah's descent into cheap commodification? Or a delightful way to feed holiday spirits and bellies? Ellin discusses with Blair Klayman, Give & Go's vice president of marketing and Innovation and kits. Acts 2:13

BIBLE IN TEN

Wednesday, 3 November 2021   Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.” Acts 2:13   Those who heard the Spirit speak in their own tongues were “amazed and perplexed.” They strained to understand what was happening. However, Luke now continues, referring to “Others.”   These would probably be those who were from, and dwelt in, Jerusalem itself. They would hear the languages and either not perceive the subtle differences in dialect (such as those from various areas of Judea noted in verse 2:9), or would think the other languages were simply gibberish. Of these would probably be the scribes and pharisees and others who spent much of their time in Jerusalem. Without grasping the magnitude of the event occurring before them, and thinking it was all a put on, they were “mocking.”    The word is found only here and in Acts 17:32. It properly means “to joke.” As such, it speaks of using barbed humor and jeers that mocks others. With this attitude, they “said, ‘They are full of new wine.'”   In these words, is a word found only here in Scripture, gleukos. It is a word akin to glukus, meaning “sweet.” One can immediately see the basis of the word glucose. Thus, this is a type of sweet wine which uses fresh juice, but with a high level of sugars making it easy to drink copiously and thus it would be highly inebriating. It is probably akin to the wine made today by Manischewitz.   In other words, these “others” are saying that the disciples were all drunk and simply talking nonsensical gibberish. As they were at a pilgrim feast, this would probably not be all that uncommon. Drinking alcohol was not only an acceptable part of rejoicing at these feasts, it was specifically referred to as something completely expected of them. The Lord, through Moses, says this in Deuteronomy 14 –   “And you shall spend that money for whatever your heart desires: for oxen or sheep, for wine or similar drink, for whatever your heart desires; you shall eat there before the Lord your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your household.” Deuteronomy 14:26   Moses, speaking of the times when the people ate their tithes – which was during the pilgrim feasts – refers to two separate intoxicants: yayin, or fermented (alcohol based) wine and shekar, or highly intoxicating liquor. It is this allowance for the rejoicing of the pilgrims that the “others” of this verse thought was the basis for what was occurring. Hence, they were mocking the pilgrims as would be common at any such gathering when such visitors couldn't hold their drink.   Life application: This is a descriptive verse. It prescribes nothing. But what it describes is the assumed conduct of pilgrims to Jerusalem by some who saw their speaking in tongues. A miracle was taking place. And yet, they did not perceive it as such. This is what Paul refers to in 1 Corinthians –   “In the law it is written: ‘With men of other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people; And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me,' says the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 14:21   Those who mocked heard, but they did not “hear.” It will take explaining to them the magnitude and meaning of what was being done before them. This is what will occur in the verses ahead. Until then, a couple things of interest can be considered from the evaluation of this short verse.   First, it was common and acceptable for the pilgrims to drink alcohol at the pilgrim feasts (when the tithes were eaten). The common teaching that the Jews only drank wine cut by water so that it was highly diluted is not true. Moses' words in the law concerning the allowances at the pilgrim feasts, when the people came to eat their tithes, is explicit and it is easily understood. They were to enjoy the eating of their tithes in the presence of the Lord and to do so with the blessing of fermented drink. As the psalm says, “Wine that gladdens the heart of man” (Psalm 104:15, BSB).   Secondly, it is quite evident that, for whatever reason, some who saw the miraculous tongues being spoken did not understand. As it was the Pharisees and other leaders that purposefully had Christ crucified, it may be that they were denied understanding the miraculous nature of what occurred in order to cause them to consider the miracle differently than the others. This is speculation, but even after having what occurred openly explained, it is quite apparent throughout the rest of Acts that there were many who did not believe and who continued to work against the early church.   Let us be careful to hear the word when it is spoken, and then let us apply it to our lives. If we hear the word and don't understand it, let us think on it, search for an answer in a reliable commentary or from a trusted scholar, and then let us continue to consider its meaning. May we never mock the word that is heard but respond to it with care – applying its precepts to our lives.   Lord God, Your word is precious. Thank You for it. Fill us with the desire to read it and contemplate its truths all the days of our lives. Amen.

We bring light into an increasingly demonic world by introducing our gentle listeners to a Halloween film with a Christian message. HALLOWEEN HERO is a bizarre and delightful action-packed drama from Ashley Hays Wright, our new favorite director, who has created an astonishing amount of work in the past two years alone. Remarkably, this film was written by her 11 year old daughter, Cadence. Ashley and her whole family, including her homeschooled children, have written and starred in at least 10 features, as well as shorts, TV specials, a family sitcom, and various documentaries since 2019. Their work is clearly low budget and made quickly, but that level of ambition is pretty amazing. HALLOWEEN HERO stars Ashley's husband, David Owen Wright, as a depressed alcoholic who chugs Manischewitz because he lost his wife when she was murdered on Halloween. Distraught, he plots his own Halloween suicide by marking Oct. 31 on his calendar with the word “DEATH!!”. But a chance encounter with a young trick or treater (played by Cadence) gives him newfound purpose, and helps him turn his life around. Why do we stay shackled like the Hebrew slaves in Egypt to this Pyramid Scheme we call "capitalism"? One root of the evil that runs deep in the history of human “civilization” is religious sexual abuse—from the Evangelical “purity” cult-complicit “Massage Parlor Massacre” to the first little “baby lie” told to me at the age of five, in the center of a big 100-family Passover seder. Ho, ho, ho, loyal listeners of Asgard! If you're reading this, then you're listening to the latest episode of the Mighty Warriors Three Marvel Podcast - the last episode of the year 2018! That's right, interim host Bry-Bry, Tazer, and even Ol' Man Whirlyburger Jon show up to give 2018 the viking funeral that it deserves before entering the Odinsleep! We say good-bye to this year and, oi vey, what a year it has been - do you guys remember that Black Panther came out THIS year? It feels like it came out AT LEAST 2 or 3 years ago! But I digress... in this episode, we look forward to the year of 2019 with hope and glee, and discuss all the things to come that we're excited for in the new year! We review the trailers for Avengers: Endgame and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order! We talk comics - the announcements of Spider-Man: Life Story, Cosmic Ghost Rider Destroys Marvel History, Spider-Man: City at War (a new story adapting the universe of the PlayStation4 game's version of Spider-Man), and the forthcoming story arc in Amazing Spider-Man #16: "Hunted", featuring the return of Kraven the Hunter! We briefly discuss the announcement that The Punisher season 2 is to air on Netflix in January 2019, and cap off our news segment with a round-up of Marvel's presence on the awards circuit this year and in the year to come! In reviews, the boys get all-misty-eyed celebrating the forthcoming wedded bliss of Benjamin J. Grimm and Alicia Masters with Fantastic Four: Wedding Special #1! Then in individual reviews, Jon is won over through sheer force of violence in The Punisher #4, Tazer delves into the depths of confusion with The Best Defense: Namor #1, and Bry-Bry gushes about the artwork (and prays for a Midnight Sons book) in review of The Best Defense: Doctor Strange #1! That's our show, folks, and that's our year - 2018 has come and gone like dust in the wind, and we look forward to a brighter, better year in 2019! In the meantime, though, dont forget to follow us on Facebook at The Mighty Warriors Three Marvel Podcast, follow us on Twitter at @Warriorz3Pcast, subscribe to us on iTunes, and perhaps rate us favorably and leave a kind word in review - that's our Christmas wish! Until then, Feliz Navidad, Happy Holidays, and we'll see you in 2019!

Many episodes ago, your hosts skipped a whole clause of the First Amendment for good reason - to accommodate their first guest!  Fellow podcaster Zane Relethford joins Dan and J.T. to discuss the influence of religion in politics. Zane is a vital part of the Fancybat Podcast Network, of which The Cocktail Party Congress is a proud part!  You can hear more from Zane (and many more) on The Cartoncast and Empowered! Zane was kind enough to provide our featured cocktail: Jesus Juice!  To drink along at home, mix together equal parts red wine and Dr. Pepper on the rocks.  Dan and J.T. used a Malbec per this website's advice, but Zane kept it sacrilicious and went with Manischewitz. As always, please drink (and think) responsibly!  In Vino Veritas! Enjoy this Roy Moore spokesman's cognitive dissonance at hearing that the Bible is not the mandated platform for oaths of office. Or check out the documentary "With God on Our Side" to find out why Jimmy Carter was simultaneously a dream and nightmare for the then-nascent Evangelical Right. Created and presented by J.T. Andrews and Dan Caves.  Edited by Dan Caves.
