In this episode of the Teach Different podcast, hosts Dan and Steve Fouts discuss a provocative quote by former United States Senator, Lincoln Chafee: “Trust is built with consistency.” They explore the claim that in order to build trust, you have to be consistent with your actions. They discuss counterclaims regarding trust, including the idea that some individuals may not be consistently reliable yet can still be trusted in critical moments and that trust can be built through intuition, not just consistency. They conclude with some essential questions such as what is your trust language? Image Source: Kenneth C. There's a constant tug-of-war between fact and fiction that's oftentimes keeping the exchange of ideas in a stranglehold. From debates over vaccines to the blame game erupting over Afghanistan, it turns out there's a studied science behind decision-making. Attorney and sociology professor Nika Kabiri explains how ideas – not facts – are more effective when trying to dissuade people from doubling down. The Afghanistan war cost Americans nearly $2 trillion on top of thousands of lives lost. While pundits scramble to make sense of what was ultimately gained, we tally the major expenses accrued over the past 20 years. And modern retail is growing increasingly reliant on hidden fees. From hotel surcharges to processing fees, attorney and professor Steven Weisman explains how sellers in every industry use ‘drip pricing' to tighten the squeeze on consumers. Plus, in the wake of the calamitous Afghanistan exit, former RI governor Lincoln Chafee's criticism of unauthorized military operations still rings true. He was the only Senate Republican to vote against the Iraq War.
You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about news, the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Rhode Island native, Zechariah Chafee, was an american judicial scholar and civil rights advocate… often thought to be one the most important first amendment scholars of the first half of the twentieth century. Chafee's avid defense of freedom of speech led to Senator Joseph McCarthy to call him “dangerous to America”. Chafee's nephew was Senator John Chafee and his grandnephew is the Governor and former Senator Lincoln Chafee. Now, we turn our feature story…. In a return to normalcy, high school graduation ceremonies took place on Friday night for three local high schools — Westerly, Chariho and Wheeler. The fact that the graduation ceremonies could be conducted as in-person events, with a mostly maskless audience, on fields where it is traditionally held stood as testimony to the promise of vaccines and a welcome return to familiar touchstones Superintendent of Schools Mark Garceau told the Westerly Graduates:. "What an absolute honor and thrill it is to be here tonight, to be able to actually see all these smiling faces, to be back on Augeri Field where we belong, and to be together to honor and celebrate the classiest of classes, the COVID Class of 2021; a class like no other before it and one that has endured what we hope to never see again," Rather than simply "bouncing back" from the effects of COVID-19, Garceau asked the 182-member class and audience to consider using the experience of getting through the pandemic to "bounce forward." Over at Chariho High, Principal Craig MacKenzie said the COVID-19 pandemic has strengthened everyone's resiliency. “While our school experience was more muted than in the past, we are kinder to each other, more appreciative of many aspects of schooling that we might have taken for granted, and more aware of how our attitudes and actions impact others,” he said. Marking his last graduation at Chariho, MacKenzie ended his remarks by telling the graduates, “I don't take for granted that the promise I see in the eyes of the Class of 2021 inspires me to continue to grow as I make my next big move with you.” And at Wheeler, class president Molly Butremovic told her classmates Friday evening during the commencement that the Class of 2021 found ways to not only survive, but thrive. “If I had to choose one word to describe the Class of 2021 it would definitely be resilient,” Butremovic said. “We did not exactly have a typical high school experience, but we were able to make the best out of every situation.” As we send our graduates off to college and careers, all of us at The Westerly Sun wish them well… with a reminder to stay in touch and subscribe to know about everything happening here. It's mid-June and, whoo boy, we are already so deep into the third party political season! This week, we are talking about the 2020 Libertarian Party Convention and the three candidates who didn't quite make it onto the final ballot.Join us as we discuss the awesomeness of micronations, ways to make a physical cryptocurrency, and a movie that is the Libertarian answer to The Room.
Join Jim and Greg as they celebrate the end of the Bernie Sanders campaign, knowing an avowed socialist will not be president. They also weigh in on the thorny debate over how much our private health data ought to be available to the government as it navigates the COVID-19 crisis. And after forgetting Lincoln Chafee was running for president as a Libertarian, Jim and Greg comment on his second straight campaign implosion.
The race for the Libertarian Presidential nomination is heating up, and with that, so is my Libertarian Presidential interview series, as today I am joined by former Senator/Governor of Rhode Island and former Democratic Presidential candidate Lincoln Chafee! Governor Chafee joins the show to discuss his candidacy and why he feels he is the best person to carry the Libertarian message forward in the 2020 general election. Listen as Governor Chafee lists out his three most important issues, who might be his VP candidate if nominated, a look into some of his past votes, and what the a President Chafee's response to the COVID-19 outbreak would look like. Find Governor Chafee Online: Website: https://www.lincolnchafee.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LincolnForLiberty Twitter: https://twitter.com/LincolnChafee Sponsored By: The Libertarian Party: What's the best way to advance liberty? That's a question I get asked often. You can be an activist, an entrepreneur, a media personality, or politics. That's why I decided to become a member of the largest pro-liberty party in the United States, the Libertarian Party. I started my show with the goals to educate, enlighten, and inform, while also advancing the principles of liberty. The LP is the largest political party in America that, at its core principles, embraces the values of individual liberty, property rights, and non-aggression. The other two major parties have embraced tribal warfare versus principled debate. It's time we stop feeding the beast and put our money where out mouths are. That means putting petty bickering and nonsensical arguments aside and actually advancing liberty. The LP, like every political party, has its flaws. But instead of focusing on those flaws and tossing stones from the cheap seats, it's time we take personal responsibility (like we promote on a regular basis) and take some responsibility in making the LP the best it can be. This week, the five leading Democratic candidates for president — Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Martin O’Malley, Lincoln Chafee, and Jim Webb — will meet on stage for a debate in Las Vegas. It will be the first of only six scheduled Democratic debates, which is a dramatic decline from primaries past. In 2004, for instance, there were 15 Democratic debates. In 2008, there were 26 debates. So what’s the difference this time? Why only 6 debates? Because of something called the exclusivity rule — conjured and enforced by the leadership of the Democratic National Committee. In this episode, we explore:the blowback to the DNC’s decision to cut off debate;the shifting position of Bernie’s campaign staff on the importance of more debates;how the debates might cast Bernie in an unflattering light, and how he might respond; andthe movement to #AllowDebate.
