Cheers,Scott, Michael & JakeBourbon Lens About Master Distiller Brian Prewitt: Brian’s interest in the beverage industry was peaked when he landed a job at a brewery while attending Colorado State University obtaining his bachelor’s degree in food science. Upon graduation, Prewitt further honed his interest for brewing and distilling by completing the Master Brewers Program at University of California, Davis. From there, he joined The Great Divide Brewing Company in Denver, Colo., eventually becoming its brewer. When Prewitt saw an opportunity to try his hand at distilling spirits instead of beer, he jumped at the chance to join E&J Distilleries in Modesto, Calif. and was eventually named Senior Distiller. It was at E&J that Prewitt was able to train under two Master Distillers with a combined experience of more than 70 years in the art of distillation, learning about raw material selection, fermentation, distillation, and maturation. Brian was named Master Distiller at the A. Smith Bowman Distillery in 2013, and he is excited to carry on the Bowman family tradition of award-winning products while introducing some new offerings as well. A native of Colorado, Brian now lives in Fredericksburg, Va. with his wife and three children. About A. Smith Bowman Smith Bowman's distilling roots date back to the years before Prohibition when the Bowman family had a granary and dairy farm in Sunset Hills, Virginia. They used excess grain from the family estate to distill spirits. In 1934, after the Repeal of Prohibition, Abram Smith Bowman and his sons continued the family tradition and built a more modern distillery in Fairfax County, Virginia called Sunset Hills Farm. The Distillery was moved in 1988 and is now nestled in Spotsylvania County near the city of Fredericksburg, 60 miles away from the original location. As a small and privately owned company, A. Smith Bowman Distillery continues the time-honored traditions on which it was founded. Considered a micro-distillery by today's standards, A. Smith Bowman produces an assortment of hand-crafted spirits distilled from only the finest natural ingredients and using the latest technology. This micro-distillery focuses on the production of premium spirits honoring the legacy of Virginia's first settlers. As Virginia’s oldest and most award-winning distillery, its various brands have earned numerous prestigious awards over the years, including John J. Bowman Single Barrel, which received a gold medal at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. For more information on A. Smith Bowman, please visit www.asmithbowman.com. Links: A. Your next storyteller is Lucy Roucis. We are heartbroken to say that Lucy passed away this week, after a decades-long battle with Parkinson's disease. Lucy might be best known by a broader audience for her appearance in Love & Other Drugs, but in Denver she's been a force on and off stage for years, a wickedly funny and talented actor and comedian who will be deeply missed. Lucy told a couple of stories at The Narrators, but today we're sharing her first—this story was recorded at Buntport Theater in November 2017; the theme of the night was "Under Your Skin." A special thanks to all of our sponsors—Buntport Theater Company, Illegal Pete's, From the Hip Photo, and Great Divide Brewing Company. Our theme music is by Whalehawk and we would also like to thank Nathan Hall, who provided the outro music for this episode. Pumpkin Spice Yeti by Great Divide Brewing Company is rich and roasty with added layers of decadent sweetness. It’s brewed with seasonal spices and a unique selection of coffee from their friends at Pablo’s Coffee. The brewery started small and in the beginning Brian Dunn was the only full-time employee. As the brewery grew, the beer spoke for itself. Dunn’s beers are balanced, flavorful and representative of a lifestyle that is uniquely Colorado. While Great Divide’s ethos may be globally-inspired, their beers are distinctly Denver. In Episode #32 of Beats, Beards & Brews, the gang dives into the latest release from Lupe Fiasco, DROGAS Light, which might be a mash-up of three albums, one of which (we think) carries an alien/stripper/space concept. Eric then shares his latest (and greatest) pocket beard comb/pick find, the Beard Pick No. 1 from Bisson Combs out of Toronto, which produces some quality stainless steel products with an array of price points and finishes. This leads to a heated debate on pocket functionality and proper wallet placement. Front-right pocket or back pocket for the wallet? You decide. Send us a tweet at @BBBPod if you feel strongly on this very important issue. Use #frontpocketwallet or #backpocketwallet to weigh in. Finally, Evan, Dan and Eric rate the first entry in the Hop Disciples IPA project from Great Divide Brewing Company, which features Idaho 7 hops, known for its unique black tea flavor. See, you can actually learn a thing or two about beer on our podcast! Post-Show Notes: Dan briefly mentions the "Bend and Snap" technique that "ladies love." Apparently there's even a WikiHow page dedicated to this technique, which has roots in the movie Legally Blonde, but Dan's version seems to place emphasis on a man's posterior versus the length of a woman's leg (at least that seems to be the difference). Gender equality FTW! Also, the song "Mama, I'm Coming Home" off No More Tears by Ozzy Osbourne (total classic) is about Sharon Osbourne, Ozzy's wife, and not his mother. Take that Evan and Dan!
Chris and Jake are joined by the recently returned from exile Hunter to discuss two films - the Sundance favorite The Birth of A Nation and the Land of the Rising Sun sensation Shin Godzilla! Chris picks a brew that's "barely a beer" for the tale of Nat Turner, plus a cheeky pick for the kitschy pic. *PLUS* The Dudes discuss FilmStruck, a new cinephile-centric streaming service from Criterion Collection and TCM! *PLUS Pt. II* The latest results from Fantasy Movie League - and wouldn't you know it,
The boys go into the excitement(?) that was week 2 of the English Premier League. Ferris is very happy with how things are going at Manchester United, Ron is enjoying the Chelsea run so far, and Blake at least thinks the new yellow Arsenal kit is kind of neat. They marvel that Hull City will be in a top of the table match after their win this week. The show ends with a quick discussion of Neymar's fairytale final shot that lead to Brazil's Olympic Gold. This episode opens with a review of a delicious craft brew from Great Divide Brewing Company.
The Biddies drink Hercules Double IPA with friend Henry & furry friend Pivo.
Season 2, Episode 34 – Natalie DeNicholas joins us for another round as we drink a variety of beers for the great state of Colorado. This week, we’re going full Colorado. Six beers from four great CO breweries. It’s no secret that Colorado is a mecca of craft beer, and this week we’re honing in on some of our favorites. Colorado Beers We kick off the show with a couple of beers brought to us by friend of the show Enrique Leyva. He recently visited Colorado and brought some beers back for Matt. First up is Prost Brewing Company. Prost has only been on the scene for a few years, but their authentic German brews are spot on and delicious. If you’re ever in Denver for the Great American Beer Festival, you’re sure to see some beer celebs throwing back Pils at Prost. Next up is a Life’s Trade from TRVE Brewing Company, “the most metal fucking brewery ever,” according to Matt. It’s a saison fermented in Puncheons, and it’s awesome. TRVE is a very small operation and they’ve recently announced plans for expansion. Great Divide Brewing Company is next on deck with their 21st Anniversary sour ale. TL;DR we all think it needs more time in the bottle, which will allow the tart character to develop a bit more. We finish the show with two beers from Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project that John has been storing in his cellar for a few years, Bourbon Barrel Cherry Origins, and Nightmare On Brett (Grand Cru). Our love for Crooked Stave runs deep, and these beers only reinforce our devotion. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT.
