It's bad form to leave milk and cookies out for Santa Tomme, his preferred beverage is a double IPA named Mongo.
2022 has been rough on craft beer. From the macroeconomic forces hitting the entire economy—rising rents, rampant inflation in raw materials and logistics costs, shortages, rising labor costs—to the industry-specific challenges like changing consumer interest in packaging formats, shifting beer styles, distributor focuses, changing draft beer landscape, and more, it's become increasingly difficult to operate brewing businesses successfully. For Port Brewing and The Lost Abbey cofounder Tomme Arthur, the solution is to "grow down," or get comfortable being smaller. For so many breweries, planning for future growth has always informed every decision, from branding to brewhouse, but after 17 years of constant reinvestment into future growth that now looks like an unreachable horizon, Arthur is having second thoughts. In this episode, recorded initially for a written Q&A in the latest issue of our Brewing Industry Guide, Arthur shares his perspective on topics like: dealing with brewery square footage that isn't generating revenue challenges in shallow and wide distribution distributor consolidation and changing priorities the hidden cost increases in triple net commercial leases rising raw materials costs the shift in consumer interest in sour beer revamping the existing brewhouse to be more attuned to proper inventory levels the hidden costs of operating more taproom locations And more. My guest today is Chris Leguizamon, a beer educator and marketer living and working in San Diego and one of the new voices of craft beer. Chris has worked at several of southern California's top breweries, including the aforementioned Stone and Alesmith, as a tour guide and brand ambassador. From his earliest work in the industry, Chris recognized the importance of education, both for himself and for visitors taking his tours. He has honed his approach to beer education tour by tour, helping to engage with his audience. And he's pretty good at it. Or at least his girlfriend must think so. They met on one of his tours.San Diego is one of those beer cities that has incredible significance in the history of American craft beer. Heavyweights such as Stone, Port Brewing, the Lost Abbey, Alesmith, and others helped define what beer could be. But beer drinkers are a fickle lot and many of these OG breweries are struggling to redefine themselves in the new world of craft beer. Staying relevant isn't easy, especially when you've been in the game a while. And while these folks try to figure out whether dry, bitter West Coast IPAs have any place in our new hazy world order, the undeniably positive side to all of this is all of the new voices we're getting to hear from. For San Diegan Chris, beer education is the key to keeping the audience engaged.Chris uses his popular Instagram account (chris.thebeereducator) to promote knowledge about craft beer and to deepen connections to beer. Education is core to Chris's beer identity, both personally and professionally. Through his hard work he's even managed to achieve the Advanced Cicerone designation after studying on bus rides to his beer job. When the pandemic hit, Chris had to figure out how to migrate his beer education efforts, which had largely relied on tangible and in person events, to a new reality of learning at a distance. With the blessing and support of his employer, Pure Project, Chris took to hosting Instagram Live events and started a Virtual Book Club. Focused on taking his audience through beer writer Jeff Alworth's The Beer Bible, Chris teamed up with a local beer store, Bottlecraft, to curate a monthly six-pack to accompany each episode of his book club. He also worked with Alworth's publisher, Workman, to provide e-copies of the book to his audience at a discount. His education efforts are engaging, interesting, and creative, just the kind of energy that craft beer needs to sustain itself in an uncertain future. In our conversation, Chris and I discuss his beer education efforts, his success on social media, how he manages to avoid burning out when things get tough, and what makes a good tour guide. I start Chris out with a tough question and it leads to a loooooong pause in his response and some confusion. For more information on the Beer Edge Podcast, follow us on Twitter @thebeeredge. Tomme Arthur - member of the "first name club" in craft beer - is a legendary and highly influential brewer out of San Diego, California. We sat down with Tomme to discuss his career, from his roots in the nascent San Diego craft beer scene in the '90s to his recent endeavors, which include new brands like Tiny Bubbles. HIs perspective on the growth of craft beer in San Diego and America is essential to understanding how we've gotten here and where we may go next. One has been done before and one has an extra DDYH attached to it. Quickdraws include poo poo, pee pee, an astonishing fact about A Christmas Carol, the fastest red card in soccer EVER and have you ever heard of Sartre? Dave and Andy basically want a redo on the sequel trilogy. This is the Star Wars they’ve been waiting for. Andy doesn’t recommend messing with moms. Especially if you’re part of the cartel. The story of one mom giving the Cartel... CART-HELL!!! Dave doesn’t recommend having the Instagram app on your phone. He’s got a harrowing personal story about this. Guests include Tomme Arthur, San Diego-based founder of the Lost Abbey, Port Brewing, the Hop Concept and Tiny Bubbles; Caitlin Braam, Seattle-based co-founder of Yonder Cider and the Source Cider; and Bourcard Nesin, New York-based beverage analyst at Rabobank.

Many of their beers make "White Whale" lists and see fans clamoring for short pours at bottle shares or searching trade forms to land their catch. Founder and Chief Operating Owner Tomme Arthur discovered craft beer while pursuing an English degree. By the time he he graduating his mind was set on a career in brewing. Prior to starting The Lost Abbey he earned several accolades at other breweries including Small Brewpub and Small Brewery of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival along with Small Brewpub and Small Brewery Brewer of the Year. Arthur talks with us about brewing in those early days and the styles that were popular, comparing beer to music and where we are as an industry. We discuss the role and importance of terroir in brewing, and how each beer tells a story. We also sample offerings of his other brands (The Hop Concept and Tiny Bubbles) and discuss why each deserves it's own identity. On episode three of Scene in San Diego Featuring Eater, we talk about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on our city’s craft breweries as the industry continues to adapt to challenges. We also explore an ambitious new brewery that recently opened in Mission Valley – but not without its own COVID-19 obstacles. We are joined by our guest, Paige McWey Acers, from the San Diego Brewers Guild to give us an update on San Diego’s craft beer industry in these tough times. McWey Acers has helped lead the guild for over seven years and currently serves as its executive director. She previously worked for Karl Strauss Brewing Company.Current Public Health Rules for San Diego’s Breweries & Tasting RoomsSan Diego’s breweries/tasting rooms first temporarily closed in mid-March as the coronavirus pandemic hit San Diego County. At that point, many craft brewers turned to canning, curbside pickup, merch sales, beer delivery and shipping to survive. Breweries were allowed to reopen in late May 2020 – if they served food, on the same transaction as beer. Many of San Diego’s independent brewers slowly reopened their tasting rooms, finding ways to bring food sales into the mix and adapt to the pandemic-related public health guidelines (social distancing, masks, signage, etc.) necessary to operate. On July 1, more change jolted the industry. San Diego County public health leaders amended the Public Health Order to include the closure of breweries (and bars) that DO NOT serve food. The order excluded wineries and distilleries that have outdoor tasting rooms; those are still allowed to operate but must do so outdoors.Weeks later, breweries in San Diego County can only operate outdoors, if they also sell food, all in the same transaction. Many breweries are partnering with caterers, restaurants and food trucks to follow those rules, but it’s still a challenge.San Diego County remains on California’s COVID-19 monitoring list through at least July 27, with these restrictions for breweries (and many other businesses) in place until at least through that date. The San Diego Brewers Guild, which currently has more than 120 members, is keeping a running list on its website of which of its members are open – and at what capacity. Some craft breweries are open for curbside pickup only, some are shipping their products, some are open for modified hours – only when they can book a food truck or partner with a restaurant. You can check out that list here.Guest Interview: Paige McWey Acers, Executive Director of the San Diego Brewers GuildPaige McWey Acers has had a storied career in local beer. She speaks with Monica Garske and Candice Woo about San Diego’s craft brewing industry, including how San Diego Brewers Guild members are staying afloat in the choppy pandemic times.McWey Acers touches on how food is served at breweries these days and how brewers have pivoted. She also discusses the some of big challenges craft brewers are facing and what the industry needs right now from customers and local government. The reality is, the pandemic is having an impact on how San Diego’s craft brewing industry is operating and how it will operate in the future.San Diego Brewers Guild: The BEER FundTo help support local craft brewers in need during the pandemic, San Diego City Councilmember Chris Cate and County Supervisor Jim Desmond -- have set up something called the BEER Fund, or “Breweries Experiencing Economic Roadblocks.” All donations to the fund directly benefit the San Diego Brewers Guild and will be distributed by the guild to local craft brewers experiencing financial hardship. You can donate to the BEER Fund here and read more about it here.Local Craft Breweries That Couldn’t Make It: Tasting Rooms That Have Permanently ClosedSadly, not all craft breweries will be able to survive the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis. The SDBG said several of its members have had to permanently shutter in recent months. This includes: Iron Fist in Vista and Barrio Logan; Escondido Brewing Company; Thunderhawk Alements in Miramar. Iron Fist operated in Vista for about 10 years and announced it was shutting down all operation in mid-May – even before this second wave of pandemic rollbacks in San Diego County.San Diego’s New Brewery: Puesto CerveceriaIn the midst of some breweries scaling back or even closing shop, we have seen the debut of a couple of breweries during the pandemic, including an ambitious restaurant, bar and brewery from Puesto in Mission Valley.Puesto Cerveceria is a 10,000-square-foot brewery/restaurant that replaces the Gordon Biersch brewpub. Puesto has eateries in La Jolla and The Headquarters at Seaport, but this is the Mexican restaurant’s first foray into brewing its own beer. The project was delayed due to several COVID-19 related issues, which also impacted its beer program. The Mission Valley brewery was originally set to open in April, but the pandemic delayed those plans. Puesto is making a variety of traditional Mexican-style lagers, which were ready to go for that planned April debut, but the beers had to be brewed all over again when the location’s opening was postponed.Ales can typically be brewed and consumed within a few weeks, but lagers need a slower fermentation process. Puesto said its freshly-brewed lagers will be available by August and will eventually be served at all the brand’s restaurants in California.Puesto spent $8 million on the Mission Valley brewery/restaurant but, due to current pandemic health restrictions in San Diego County, patrons can’t go inside just yet. To operate, Puesto – like all local restaurants right now – can move its dining room outdoors. The Mission Valley location has two big outdoor seating areas and has added a pop-up patio in the parking lot, for now.COVID-19 Collaboration Beer: San Diego Brewers Unite Double IPAAlthough it’s rough right now for craft breweries, guild members are still finding ways to help and support one another – very much in spirit of the industry.Earlier this month, Stone Brewing said it had collaborated with six prominent SDBG members – AleSmith; Modern Times; Mother Earth; Pizza Port; Port Brewing; and Thorn – to create a new beer that directly benefits the San Diego Brewers Guild as the organization continues to try to provide support to its 120+ member breweries. The San Diego Brewers United Double IPA was released last week and will be available for a limited time in California only. It comes in a 4-pack of 16-ounce cans and all proceeds benefit the San Diego Brewers Guild. Read more about that project here. For more content from The Scene, visit this website. We source the beverages we feature for our shows from many different establishments, but there are certainly some that we favor more than others. There are certain factors that are a part of these stores becoming a favorite, with quality and selection at the top of the list. Another key component of this equation is convenience, and with Keith working at Trader Joe’s, we tend to try several things that he finds there. The way this often happens is that he walks into work on Wednesday (the day of the big beer delivery), sees something new and suggests to Andrew that it would be good for a show. Over the past few months Trader Joe’s has been receiving more choices from Pizza Port which is why we have been sharing more of them with you. This week that trend will continue as we feature Pizza Port Brewing’s Sidewalk Surfin’ double IPA. The last few beers we have had from them have been quite good, so we thought we would see if we could continue to ride the wave. What did we think? What do you think? Episode 260 - Tomme Arthur, The Lost Abbey & Port Brewing (COVID-19 Quarantine Edition) Happy Monday, Thieves! We hope you are all taking care, staying safe and healthy at home. Before the quarantines really got strict, John drove down to Augie's house for an afternoon of cellar raiding and phone calls. We called up Mr. Tomme Arthur, founder of the Lost Abbey and a brewer of fine quality sour ales to find out how Covid-19 was impacting his brewery, California in general, and to get a handle on what he was drinking. In between deliveries (because the man is committed like that) he shared some thoughts on the beer business, the future, and gave us just a little bit of hope. Phone shows like this are going to be the new normal for a while. Over the years, we have tried several beverages that have had connections to the music industry. Without going into the archives at AboutBeverages.com we can list several right off of the top of our heads. We have had a beer (Enter Night Pilsner by Stone) and a whiskey (Blackened) from Metallica, a delicious dark sour ale (Clutch, from New Belgium) made in conjunction with the band Clutch, and an IPA (Phantom Bride, from Belching Beaver) named after a song by the Deftones. This trend was even on display locally as we tried an anniversary beer (Here Comes a Regular) made by Tombstone Brewing to commemorate the 6th anniversary of Tap and Bottle that was named after a song by The Replacements. While we realize that this week's beverage is not directly connected to a band, its name is so very close to the name of a 1960’s California surf band that we decided to make the leap. In this episode we will be trying the Surfari IPA from Pizza Port Brewing Company. This beer, which is their seasonal release for January thru March, is a re-imaging of a classic West Coast style IPA and features the Nelson hop. In case you were wondering about the subtle music connection, The Surfaris are the band responsible for the surf music classic “Wipe Out.” What did we think? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.
Host Ben Rice travels to San Diego, CA, to conduct mini-interviews during Karl Strauss’s Collabapalooza 2019! This is the second episode in that series of mini’s. In segment one, Ben sits down with Craig Nelson of Resident Brewing and Nyle Molina of Abnormal Brewing, to discuss their strange shared history, lager collaborations, POGs, tribal tattoos, the brewpub model, and the similarities (and surprising differences) between the San Diego and Florida craft beer markets. In segment two, Lost Abbey’s Chase Michaels and Nick Tretow go in-depth on the sour/wild ale process, as well as the fairy new offshoot brewery model (Lost Abbey is itself an offshoot of Port Brewing, as is The Hop Concept), and why anyone would ever want to live in the Midwest. And finally, in segment three, Ben chats with Larry Monasakanian of Fall Brewing and Justin Stambaugh of Stave & Nail, to learn about the exciting world of small-scale craft brewing, mass-produced craft Mexican lagers, Fall’s involvement with Who Cares, and the difference between a beer nerd and a beer douchebag. In this episode, we're cracking open Hotel Zebra by Brouwerij West and Pizza Port Brewing - an 8.2% West Coast Double IPA that is exactly what you would expect from a Pizza Port inspired beer. Bitter, dank and sticky, but with a nice tropical backbone from the bouquet of hops. Definitely a nice break from the IPAs we've been drinking lately, and LOVED the can sticker art on this one.

Craft Brew News - 05/24/19(brought to you by Brewbound.com)Texas Senate Approves Beer To-Go-Sales MeasureTexas craft brewers’ efforts to legalize beer-to-go sales is closer to passage than ever before. On Wednesday, Texas Senators unanimously passed sweeping legislation to maintain operations of the state’s alcohol regulatory body, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC), along with several changes to the state’s alcoholic beverage code, including an amendment that would permit a majority of the state’s manufacturing breweries to sell their offerings for off-premise consumption. The measure now returns to the House of Representatives for concurrence. Those familiar with the process expect the measure to easily pass through the chamber and then advance to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk.Texas is the only state in the country that does not allow beer-to-go sales at manufacturing breweries, but the state does allow brewpubs, wineries and distilleries with similar permits to sell their products for off-premise consumption. If passed, the bill would allow consumers to purchase up to one case of beer (288 fl. oz.) per day from the state’s manufacturing breweries, beginning September 1, 2019. The advancement of the beer-to-go sales bill comes a week after the Wholesale Beer Distributors of Texas (WBDT), a powerful lobbying group, agreed to back the measure. In February, the Texas Craft Brewers Guild and Texas’ other wholesaler group, the Beer Alliance of Texas, reached a “stakeholder agreement” on to-go sales. The effort to reform Texas’s direct-sales laws date back to 2015 when Dallas-based Deep Ellum Brewing sued the TABC, arguing that manufacturing breweries were at a competitive disadvantage. Deep Ellum Brewing founder John Reardon called the Senate’s passage of the beer-to-go amendment “bittersweet.”Addressing Rumors, Stone CEO Says Distribution Business is Not For SaleDespite months of rumors to the contrary, Stone Distributing Company (SDC) is not for sale.In a memo to employees last week, Stone Brewing CEO Dominic Engels sought to quash talk that the San Diego craft brewing company was attempting to offload its distribution business.“Rest assured of our commitment to SDC,” he wrote.According to Engels, Stone Distributing remains “a key piece of Stone Brewing” and a “critical” piece to the company’s success in its largest market, California. He added that Stone is “committed to the continued growth of SDC.”Indeed, Stone Distributing has grown into one of the largest craft beer wholesalers in the San Diego market. According to a March profile in San Diego Magazine, the more than two decades old wholesale business sells about 4.5 million cases of beer to more than 12,700 unique accounts annually. The business, which employs more than 300 workers, covers a 40,000-square-mile service area. Beyond selling its own brands, Stone’s portfolio includes about 45 different craft brands, including popular California craft breweries Modern Times, Russian River, and Port Brewing, as well as offerings from national brands such as Boulevard Brewing, Brooklyn Brewery, Cigar City, Oskar Blue and Victory Brewing. So where did rumors of a sale originate? Engels pointed to large wholesalers.“In times of uncertainty, fueling rumors is common practice by large wholesalers who look to undermine retailer confidence in the alleged seller,” he wrote. “Given the success of SDC as the largest independent craft beer distributor, whenever there is activity in the market, SDC is a prime target.”Study: US Beer Industry Supports More than 2 Million JobsThe U.S. beer industry was responsible for creating more than 2.19 million jobs that paid more than $101 billion in wages and benefits in 2018, according to a joint study released today by industry trade organizations the Beer Institute (BI) and the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA).The biennial “Beer Serves America” report is “a snapshot in time” of the industry’s current health and provides the industry with a tool in their advocacy efforts, NBWA president and CEO Craig Purser told Brewbound.“Part of what we’re trying to do by rolling this out is just remind people that this small industry is really the little engine that could,” he said. “It provides a lot of economic contribution and a lot of groceries on people’s tables across America.”According to the report, U.S. beer companies and wholesalers employ more than 200,000 American workers. Each of those jobs creates 31 additional full-time equivalent jobs in adjacent industries.US Lifts Aluminum and Steel Tariffs on Canada, MexicoNearly a year after imposing aluminum and steel tariffs against Canada and Mexico, the Trump administration today officially lifted levies imposed upon the two longtime trade allies. On Friday, President Donald Trump announced plans to remove the tariffs — 25 percent on foreign steel and 10 percent on imported aluminum — as the three countries work toward the passage of a renegotiated North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), now called the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. In turn, Canada and Mexico today lifted retaliatory tariffs against U.S. goods.Ending tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from Canada and Mexico marks a significant moment for the beer industry, as about 43 percent of aluminum used by U.S. beverage companies comes from Canada, according to Washington, D.C.-based trade group the Beer Institute (BI).Nevertheless, BI president and CEO Jim McGreevy said tariffs on aluminum and steel, which amount to a $350 million annual tax on the industry, need to be completely repealed.Although President Trump has eased the tariffs on imported goods from Canada and Mexico, he has also escalated his trade war against China by increasing levies against $200 billion worth of Chinese goods. As such, the tariffs on several products being imported from China, including brewing equipment, have increased from 10 percent to 25 percent. In turn, China has threatened to raise its tariffs on $60 billion of U.S. goods beginning in June.Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. In episode 11, Dave and Andy get a little toasty. This is what happens in a world where Kenny G is terrorizing the skies, mysterious radio signals blast out with unknown purpose and origin, people don't realize they've been shot for 5 years and an Australian man tries lassoing a shark while expecting to not have his leg bitten off. Or maybe it was the insanely strong beer… Let’s hope this one goes better than a luxury island music festival for rich Instagram kids planned by Ja Rule and a 21 year old! We can’t imagine how that could possibly go south. Dude, Did You Hear? We’re celebrating our 11th episode with an 11th Anniversary Imperial IPA from Port Brewing. It was also 11% ABV. So obviously, the night ended with a walk to get a large fast food burger. Quikdraws include a B- for the American flag, Ouija board trademarks, the privilege of being James Bond, an eagle attack during an air race, a new record for fastest perfect game bowling, North Korean spy techniques and Stalin’s past terrorizing the world as an aspiring poet. Fyre Festival was supposed a luxury music festival but turned into an Instagrammable version of Lord of the Flies. Dave and Andy feel bad for the festival goers. Oh wait… they don’t. They laugh at their plight. Dave brings back the mysteries by exposing an unexplainable Russian radio frequency called UVB 76 (seriously, check it out) that’s been broadcasting since 1973. Whether it’s studying the ionosphere or communicating with spies, it’s creepy. There was more abuse in the skies on an airline. And this time it was a surprise concert from Kenny G that no one asked for. The gyrations, make them stop! A guy tried to lasso a shark in Australia. You can probably guess how this ended. A Polish man forgot that he got shot in the head for 5 years until they found the bullet. STILL IN HIS HEAD. Patron saint of DDYH, Sir Patrick Stewart, is championing medical marijuana in England. Andy recommends Kubo and the Two Strings. It’s all stop-motion animation and it will BLOW YOUR MIND. Stream it on Netflix. Dave and Andy both recommend Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Come for the laughs, stay for the feels. Then go see it again to support big budget movies written and directed by less than four people. Dave reveals the origin of the term “turn.” Andy recommends Silicon Valley on HBO. It’s the funniest show currently airing on any network anywhere. Dave recommends the book, The Gift of Fear. Because we all need to be reminded that fear is actually not a bad thing. Andy and Dave don’t recommend reading Stephen King's SF Fantasy schlock series the Dark Tower just to try to finish them before the movie comes out in July. You won’t make it. Trust us. Dave's going on a year slogging through them. Dave doesn’t recommend sending a floppy disc to the police if you want to be anonymous and not arrested. Stupid serial killers. Metadata for the win. Andy doesn’t recommend the Espresso Buzz Bagel from Einstein’s Bagel Bros. Let’s stick to drinking caffeine, you fiends. Dave has another “would you rather” for Andy. Spoiler alert, it involves eau de toilette de poo.

This week's guest is the stuff of legend—Tomme Arthur, the founder and brewmaster of Lost Abbey. He's a brewer associated with both San Diego’s hop-forward dominance in craft beer, but also the world of barrel-aged Saison and Belgian-inspired farmhouse beers that continue to carve out a niche amongst the geekiest of beer drinkers in the U.S. And Tomme continues to impress both of these highly critical audiences. But Tomme's also a big part of the future. His voice carries weight. His opinions matter to the next generation. And his expectations only seem to get higher for others, not to mention himself. I first met Tomme when we helped judge the Brewbound Start-up Brewery Challenge in San Diego. Later, we'd meet up again, this time in Belgium at Brasserie Dupont when GBH was there filming our mini-documentary about Saison Dupont. We also were lucky enough to document the historic collaboration between Tomme and Olivier Dedeycker, Dupont’s fourth-generation owner, that occurred that day. On the site, we described that collaboration as "punching a hole in time." As hyperbolic as that might seem, to the people involved that day, it barely served to capture the feeling. So when Tomme came to town for the Windy City Expo, an annual showcase with his distributor parter here, we decided to get together at the Hopleaf, a place that’s supported Lost Abbey from its early days, and have a conversation with a small group of fans in the upstairs bar. We also had some bottles from the cellar that Michael Roper was kind enough to share —and drink—with us. Here, we dig into Tomme’s origin story, San Diego then and now, brand, portfolio, and barrel-management, and at least a dozen other things. Plus, we had a great Q+A at the end with the folks in the room.
This week we get 2 for the price of 1 with 2 great breweries discussed with owner Tomme Arthur. Lost Abbey and Port Brewing have stellar reputations throughout the craft beer industry and this week we discuss Tomme's rich brewing past and his passion for brewing world class beer... and we do mean world class beer from 2 very distinct breweries. Season 3, Episode 13 – We didn’t really have a show planned out for this week, so we decided to raid John’s cellar. Sometimes, you just want to head into your beer cellar, dust off some bottles, and see what happens. This week, that’s exactly what we did. If you’re a long time listener of Four Brewers, you’ve heard about John’s bloated cellar and the black hole of beers within. Since we didn’t really have anything planned for this week’s episode, John and Greg decided to brave the closet, no, uh, “cellar” and see what they could find. Port Brewing and Lost Abbey So, what did they find? Turns out that John has a lot of brews from Port Brewing and The Lost Abbey. The beers they chose are among some of the best whalez out there, even for our beloved “new-money” craft beer drinkers. The thing is, when you cellar a beer, you take a monetary risk. While most breweries would agree that beers are packaged to be consumed fresh (unless you’re Deschutes), beer geeks can’t resist laying a beer down for a while to see how it changes and develops. It becomes a monetary loss when the beer is cellared for a bit too long and takes on the qualities of an over-cellared beer. This week’s episode shows that with great power comes great responsibility. When cellaring beers, it’s important to monitor them in order to drink them when they’re at their prime. If they sit too long, well, they could turn into a hot mess. The beers on this week’s episode are a testament to both scenarios. Nagel comes through in the end with a stellar barrel-aged cider that he made. Seriously, guys…it’s the best thing he’s ever brewed. Hit him up for the recipe because holy shit… BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT.
