"What happens when a 73-year-old man punches a beaver in self-defense—and why does Ben sound like he's mic'd up in a movie theater?"In this laugh-out-loud episode of The Ben and Skin Show, hosts Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray fire up the Wayback Machine and revisit one of the most chaotic, hilarious, and unforgettable segments from four years ago. From Ben's over-the-top reactions during a screening of Goodfellas to a wild story involving a beaver attack in Massachusetts, this episode is a masterclass in absurdity and nostalgia.

From standing ovations to sticky floors, what you love and hate about how people act at the movies. Barry Hertz, The Globe and Mail's deputy arts and film editor, weighs in amidst the summer blockbuster season.
The speed with which cinema caught the public's imagination is remarkable. The first film screenings took place in the 1890s and just two decades later, in the US alone there were thousands of nickelodeons and other spaces where you could watch a movie. Luxurious picture palaces followed soon after and not just in the West: some of India's Art Deco cinemas are real feasts for the eyes. But the arrival of TV fundamentally changed our relationship with movie theatres and they have struggled to remain central to our film culture ever since.Iszi Lawrence explores the 120-year development of movie theatres with film historian Professor Ross Melnick, Professor of Cinema Studies Daniela Treveri Gennari, cinematographer Hemant Chaturvedi who is documenting India's historic cinema buildings, Chinese cinema researcher Professor Jie Li and World Service listeners.(Photo: Kannappa Cinema, Padappai, Tamil Nadu. 2024. Welcome to a special bonus episode of YXE Underground featuring a really wonderful person named Kyle Zurevinski. He is the Digital Media Program Assistant at the Remai Modern Museum and one of his largest responsibilities is curating and facilitating the film program at the museum. I have had the pleasure of working with Kyle on a few community projects in my role at Sherbrooke Community Centre over the past few years and he's just really great guy who loves his community and loves bringing people together. Kyle brings people together by selecting thought-provoking, interesting and compelling films to the Remai, and we discuss how he chooses the movies in this episode. He also talks about the role movie theatres can play in forming community in Saskatoon and what it feels like to experience watching a film in a packed theatre. I am so excited to be partnering with Kyle and the Remai Modern for a special community screening of the Pixar classic film, Wall-E, on April 17th. The show is free to the public (bring the entire family!) and will be screened at the Remai's theatre which you can find on the second floor. It starts at 7pm and I will be giving away free YXE Underground swag to everyone who comes! I love Wall-E and I think it connects in so many meaningful ways to the mission and values of the podcast. We will also be screening the short film that Saskatoon videographer, Molly Schikosky, and I made last summer to celebrate all things YXE Underground. I can't wait to see it on the big screen! I hope to see you on April 17th and a big thank you to Kyle for not only being on the podcast but for making this community screening event happen. You are awesome, Kyle!!Cheers...Eric Host, Producer, Editor: Eric AndersonTheme Music: Andrew DicksonWebsite: https://www.yxeunderground.comRecorded: On Treaty 6 Territory and the traditional homeland of the Metis

Today, movie theatres have to compete with home theatre systems and streaming services. This week, we look at how cinemas are transforming to attract more movie goers. To survive, theatres now offer restaurant meals and full bar menus. They offer loyalty programs and special theme nights. And many cinemas now offer patrons “atmospheric” movie experiences – where wind blows through your hair, rain falls from the ceiling, and seats not only jolt back and forth, they also emit smells that mirror the action on the screen. It puts the motion in motion picture. Meanwhile, we sample authentic Californian cuisine, learn about amino acids, and make some travel plans we may come to regret. Simpering wistfully into the void; a black hole of dysfunction; alcohol and violence and sexy postcards and eating in front of the TV; a romantic afternoon in the chastity barn; an extremely overdressed lump; a duckface epiphany; ill-advised pieces of mail through history; a tasteful tribute to Southern culture; outfits that go from day to synagogue to night; SOY; giving a small but non-zero amount of fucks; failing upwards into a relationship; The Secret for men; Panic! Join us in this weird journey filled with true crime and ghosts in what is quite possibly one of the most haunted movie theaters in Los Angeles, Brain Dead Studios, an indie movie theater and creative space. With a spooky history dating back to its days as The Silent Movie Theater, this place is said to be haunted by the spirits of its former owners, one who met his tragic end in the theater. Strange noises, flickering lights, and ghostly apparitions are just some of the eerie occurrences reported by visitors. Many have felt a chilling presence and claimed to witness shadowy figures moving about the theater. It's no surprise that paranormal investigators are drawn to this location in search of supernatural evidence especially the Ghost Adventures crew who investigated the space in 2017. How a wave of #MeToo allegations against French directors is shaking up the cinema industry; the Cinémobile movie theatre bringing culture to the countryside; and the satirical news rag that appears just once every four years, on 29 February. Seven years after the #MeToo movement shook Hollywood, Judith Godrèche and other actresses in France have broken the omertà around sexual abuse within the French movie industry, accusing several prominent directors of assault. Investigations are underway. Bérénice Hamidi, a specialist in the performing arts at Lyon University, talks about the extent to which this marks a turning point in French cinema culture, which for decades has fostered the idea that artists have "a free pass" to transgress the rules, and that the artist cannot be separated from his art. (Listen @0')With unrest still rumbling among farmers, France's new culture minister says she wants people in rural areas to have more access to culture. A third of the French population lives in rural communities and Culture Minister Rachida Dati has launched a national consultation on schemes to serve them – schemes like the Cinémobile, a lorry that transforms into a cinema and visits small towns across central France. It's been running for more than 40 years and despite entertainment being easier than ever to find online, something about the mobile movie theatre keeps audiences coming back. (Listen @18'08)French administration has not always made it easy for people born on 29 February – a date that occurs just once every four years. But the satirical Bougie du sapeur newspaper has embraced and indeed lives for the date. Founded in 1980, its previous edition was on 29 February 2020. Editor Jean d'Indy talks about using humour to look at the news of the past four years in this year's edition. (Listen @12')Episode mixed by Cecile Pompéani.
