Support Breaking Walls at https://www.patreon.com/thewallbreakers Back on December 2nd, 1943 when Suspense first became sponsored by Roma Wines, the script chosen for the first Roma episode was “The Black Curtain” starring Cary Grant. Of the performance Grant said, “If I ever do any more radio work, I want to do it on Suspense, where I get a good chance to act.” The just-heard Lurene Tuttle felt the same way about acting in radio. On November 30th, 1944 Grant was back on Suspense for a repeat performance of “The Black Curtain.” He requested that Lurene Tuttle join him again as the female lead. “The Black Curtain” is an adaptation of a Cornell Woolrich story about a man who wakes up after a fall on a city sidewalk and realizes he can't remember his name or events of the last three years. He soon learns he's been accused of murder. Somehow he has to prove his innocence, which means finding the real killer. The repeat performance wasn't initially planned. The original script, “To Find Help” starring Frank Sinatra had to be postponed due to a scheduling conflict. Grant happened to be available and it also happened to be the one-year anniversary of Roma's sponsorship. More than eight million people heard this broadcast. The cast features the aforementioned Lurene Tuttle, Wally Maher, Pat McGeehan, Harry Lang, and a young Conrad Binyon, who had previously played an uncredited part in The Howards of Virginia with Grant. Binyon was amazed that Cary Grant remembered him.

Audio Intro: Brief history of the series... note that in this episode Jack Mather plays Cisco and Harry Lang plays Pancho. Jackson Beck was the original Cisco Kid and Pancho was played by Louis Sorin. When died at the age of 53, Mel Blanc played Pancho. On television and in motion pictures Duncan Renaldo played the Cisco Kid and Leo Carrillo was Pancho. Radio series ran from 1942 - 1945...producing 600 episodes! TV series was on from 1950-56... producing 156 episodes. The show was the first TV series filmed in color! The series was based on O'Henry's short story "The Caballero's Way" in 1907. O'Henry's "Cisco" was a murderous criminal...deemed too violent for a program targeting children... hence the change in the nature of the characters. This track will be living in the "Westerns" Playlist

February 1948_ep01 The Adventures of Frank Race was an American radio adventure serial syndicated by Bruce Eells Productions. The 30-minute program's first East Coast broadcast was 1949, and the show ran 43 episodes. Because it was syndicated, it aired on different stations on different days. For instance, in New York City, the first episode ran on WINS on April 9, 1949. It "began running in some markets May 1, 1949. The series was broadcast on the West Coast from 1951–52. Each episode opened with a one-minute organ theme and then the following from announcer Art Gilmore: "The war changed many things; the face of the earth and the people on it. Before the war, Frank Race worked as an attorney, but he traded his law books for the cloak-and-dagger of the OSS. And when it was over, his former life was over, too... adventure had become his business!" Frank Race mainly investigated international insurance scams around the globe in various exotic locations, making him something of a cross between James Bond and Johnny Dollar. After Tom Collins played the title role for the first 22 episodes, Paul Dubov took over the lead role. Tony Barrett portrayed Race's sidekick, Mark Donovan. Other actors included Jack Kruschen, Wilms Herbert, Lillian Buyeff, Frank Lovejoy and Harry Lang. The series was written and directed by Joel Murcott and Buckley Angel. Ivan Ditmars provided the background organ music. (wikipedia)
A 9 year run on radio and more on television and in motion pictures... Jerry Mather played "The Cisco KId" and Harry Lang was his obligatory humorous partner, "Pancho." These characters were not at all like "O'Henry's" creation of the blood thirsty murdering Cisco Kid. The show had to be cleaned up and sanitized because its target audience was youngsters... so THIS Cisco became known as "The Robin Hood of the West"... Episode is "The Tunnel" and this will be stored in the Westerns Playlist on the Soundcloud.com podcast.
Our last episode with sponsors Sportingtech, and with technical difficulties for Fintan, which Jon has kindly left in so everyone can enjoy. In the intro there is the usual catch-up, everyone seems well [0:00 - 8:19]. The inimitable Harry Lang is on board to discuss marketing, referencing his own experiences of recruiting influencers and how the whole thing works. It's a fascinating look behind the curtain, frankly. Plus we find time to discuss football and the best Guinness in London [8:30 - 59:02].
Our guest came out of university not knowing what field he was going to go into. But he managed to get an internship at ad agency Saatchi and Saatchi. From there he went to work on a variety of accounts, dream clients like Penguin Books, Budweiser and Sony PlayStation. He then settled into the online entertainment space working with goalpoker.com and jackpotparty.com. And in between that and some unpublished novel writing, he found his real groove, giving advice on what young marketers could learn from things he had done. So after a career that's done just about everything that you could do agency and client side in marketing he's now sharing his advice. NB: I apologize for technical issues we had with the recording – hope you'll listen to what Harry has to say People/Products/Concepts Mentioned in Show Ads by Car manufacturer Skoda Two types of campaigns, parallel to film-making's Above the Line / Below the Line functions Harry's LinkedIn Profile The book's website EXCERPT: DON'T BE DERAILED BY REJECTION You're going to get rejected. A lot. That's just a given, and if you're on A Grade student who's sailed through school, university, and sporting success with the gilded sheen of a winner, this is going to sting a little. Get used to it. This isn't a game of round pegs for round holes. Every hole has more edges than a jigsaw and there are always shit loads of more qualified people trying desperately to mould themselves to fit in. The bravery you need to defeat this early rejection will just be a leather jerkin when compared to the metaphorical suit of armour you'll need later on, when whole campaigns or businesses you've poured your soul into are rejected without so much as a thank you email. The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

A juvenile western that was also popular with parents! The Cisco Kid produced over 600 episodes in 10 years and that does not count the television series with different actors. Very different from O'Henry's character in a novel written in 1907... THAT "Cisco" was a real villain... not a Robin Hood type of character as portrayed in radio, films, and television.
