fWotD Episode 2897: Abyssinia, Henry Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 10 April 2025 is Abyssinia, Henry."Abyssinia, Henry" is the 72nd episode of the American television series M*A*S*H and the final episode of its third season. Written by Everett Greenbaum and Jim Fritzell, it first aired on March 18, 1975. The episode is notable for its shocking ending, in which the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital's amiable commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake (played by McLean Stevenson), receives an honorable discharge and leaves for home but, in the final scene, is reported to be killed by enemy fire. This ending prompted more than 1,000 letters to series producers Gene Reynolds and Larry Gelbart, and drew fire from both CBS and 20th Century Fox.The title of the episode refers to the 1920s–1930s slang use of "Abyssinia" for "goodbye". ("Abyssinia", pronounced , can be understood as "I'll be seeing you".)After the production of this episode, both Stevenson and Wayne Rogers, who played Captain Trapper John McIntyre, left the series to pursue other interests. While Stevenson's departure was announced prior to and written into "Abyssinia, Henry", Rogers unexpectedly left the series during the break between seasons, and so his character's departure takes place off-screen in the following episode, "Welcome to Korea", the first of the show's fourth season. These combined departures and their subsequent cast replacements also signaled the beginning of a shift in focus for the series as a whole, more centered on the character Hawkeye Pierce played by Alan Alda, and with stories and tone increasingly from the dramatic side of comedy drama. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:37 UTC on Thursday, 10 April 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Abyssinia, Henry on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Nicole.

Dorian Price, Mik Wanamaker, Sean Comer and Mark Radulich review movies currently on streaming services and in theaters: Blame It on Rio/LOL/The Woman in Red Movie Review! First up is Blame It on Rio (1984). Then we move on to LOL (2012). Finally we review The Woman in Red (1984).Blame It on Rio is a 1984 American romantic comedy film directed by Stanley Donen and written by Charlie Peters and Larry Gelbart based on the 1977 French film Un moment d'égarement, starring an ensemble cast, including Michael Caine, Joseph Bologna, Michelle Johnson, Valerie Harper, Demi Moore, and José Lewgoy.LOL is a 2012 American teen romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Lisa Azuelos. A remake of the 2008 French film of its title (also directed by Azuelos), the film stars Miley Cyrus, Demi Moore, Ashley Greene, and Adam Sevani. The film received a limited release in the United States on May 4, 2012, by Lionsgate, which handicapped it after being reeled back from a broader release, and had an overall negative critical reception. Thus, the film missed its budget by box office gross by only $500,000.The Woman in Red is a 1984 American romantic comedy film directed by and starring Gene Wilder. Wilder also wrote the script, adapting it from the Yves Robert film Pardon Mon Affaire (Sorry My Affair) (Un éléphant ça trompe énormément (An Elephant Can Be Extremely Deceptive)). It co-stars Charles Grodin, Gilda Radner, Joseph Bologna, Judith Ivey, and Kelly LeBrock. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for "I Just Called to Say I Love You", written and performed by Stevie Wonder. The film follows a married man who becomes infatuated with another woman and his amusingly unsuccessful attempts to first meet and then become intimate with her.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

In this episode we'll interview Yaron Gershovsky. As bandleader for Manhattan Transfer for 44 of their 50 years, he has a treasure trove of knowledge and experience around performing and composing which he will share with us on this episode. Get ready for a fun ride as we discuss his origins, career and what's next.In the spring of 2006, I was in a production of the musical “City of Angels” by Cy Coleman, David Zipel and Larry Gelbart with the Burlington Players in Burlington, MA. The musical is a story about a novelist whose book is adapted into a movie and about the entire LA movie scene. As the novel is turned into a screenplay the movie moves further and further away from the novel's original purpose and meaning. This causes a sort of schism in the mind of the novelist where he ends up having arguments with his lead character. There are lots of transitions from reality to scenes from the movie and so forth. At any rate, I was a part of a quartet that served as kind of a chorus that commented, amplified and clarified the action of the play, as choruses do. The whole play had a sort of film noir feel about it and the music for the chorus was very challenging jazzy close harmony type singing. I noticed that the vocal arrangement was written by one Yaron Gershovsky. I was curious about this fellow, so I Googled him. Now back in 2006 Google was primarily a search engine and not the GOOGLE that it is today. But regardless, I found out that Yaron was the band leader of Manhattan Transfer. That made so much sense in the context of the sound of the arrangements. Skip ahead to the early twenty teens. I was at Sculler's, a jazz venue in Boston, to see Manhattan Transfer when who should I see walking down the hall toward me but Yaron himself. I introduced myself to him and told him that I had sung the Bass part in a production of “City of Angels”. In his quiet, understated way he looked at me and, I assume referring to the difficulty of the part, said, “I'm so sorry.” So began our acquaintance.Support the showPlease consider making a one time donation via the Paypal link aboveOr, consider becoming a monthly subscribing patron of the show here:https://www.patreon.com/timtunesAnd get lots of extra documentation and music associated with the show.

Cynthia Bemis Abrams welcomes Victoria Riskin, a second-generation filmmaker with a rich Hollywood legacy. Victoria's parents—Robert Riskin, a prolific, Oscar-winning screenwriter, and Fay Wray, best known for her role in the original King Kong—were instrumental in shaping the classic years of the motion picture industry. And Victoria has crafted an impressive career all her own. She is a producer, writer, digital magazine publisher, PhD in psychology, and past president of the Writers Guild of America (WGA). She shares her experiences as WGA president and explains how power has shifted over time to the imbalance that has writers and actors on strike now in 2023. We also learn how Victoria's father tried leveraging his success with the studios to improve conditions for writers in the 1930s, but ultimately joined the Screen Writers Guild (SWG) as an early, active member. And, on the lighter side, you won't want to miss Victoria's stories from her trip to China with Norman Lear, Mary Tyler Moore, Larry Gelbart, and Carl Reiner. Victoria knows Hollywood from deep inside. No doubt you'll enjoy the interesting history and fun stories she shares with us. The 1977 comedy film "Oh, God!" had an interesting production process involving notable individuals from the entertainment industry. Here's a more detailed overview of its production: Source Material and Adaptation: The film is based on the novel "Oh, God!" by Avery Corman, published in 1971. The novel's premise, which presents a humorous and heartwarming interaction between an ordinary person and God, captured the attention of Warner Bros. executives, who saw the potential for a compelling and engaging film adaptation. Casting George Burns: One of the most pivotal decisions in the film's production was the casting of George Burns as God. George Burns was a legendary comedian and actor known for his unique voice, wit, and charm. The role required an actor who could portray God in a relatable and humorous way, and Burns' casting brought a sense of authenticity to the character. John Denver's Role: The choice to cast singer-songwriter John Denver as the protagonist, Jerry Landers, was somewhat unconventional but added to the film's appeal. Denver's down-to-earth demeanor and relatable persona complemented the character of Jerry, an everyday person chosen by God to deliver a message. Director and Screenplay: Carl Reiner, an accomplished director, writer, and comedian, was chosen to direct the film. Reiner was known for his expertise in comedy and his ability to work with talented performers. Larry Gelbart adapted the novel into a screenplay, infusing humor and thought-provoking moments into the dialogue. Cinematic Style: The film aimed for a visually relatable style to emphasize the contrast between the ordinary world and the extraordinary presence of God. The settings, including Jerry's suburban home, workplace, and interactions with God, were designed to resonate with audiences' experiences. Themes and Humor: The film's script balanced comedic moments with deeper themes related to faith, belief, and the nature of God. It explored questions about spirituality and the human experience in a lighthearted and accessible way. Reception and Legacy: "Oh, God!" was released in 1977 and exceeded expectations at the box office. Audiences and critics responded positively to its unique blend of humor and thought-provoking content. The film's success led to two sequels: "Oh, God! Book II" (1980) and "Oh, God! You Devil" (1984). Overall, the production of "Oh, God!" involved adapting a compelling novel, casting iconic figures like George Burns and John Denver, the direction of Carl Reiner, and the exploration of spirituality through humor and relatable characters. The film's enduring popularity has solidified its place as a classic comedy with a meaningful message. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: The story revolves around Jerry Landers, played by John Denver, a supermarket manager who one day receives a series of humorous and unconventional messages from God. George Burns portrays God in a human form who appears before Jerry to deliver a simple yet profound message about spreading kindness, understanding, and love in the world. As Jerry grapples with his newfound divine task, he faces skepticism and challenges from his family, friends, and society at large. The film explores themes of faith, belief, and the importance of finding meaning in everyday life. Through a blend of humor and heartwarming moments, "Oh, God!" encourages audiences to contemplate spirituality and the impact of their actions on the world around them. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support
M*A*S*H (an acronym for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) is an American war comedy drama television series that aired on CBS from September 17, 1972 to February 28, 1983. It was developed by Larry Gelbart as the first original spin-off series adapted from the 1970 feature film M*A*S*H, which, in turn, was based on Richard Hooker's 1968 novel MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors. The series, which was produced with 20th Century Fox Television for CBS, follows a team of doctors and support staff stationed at the "4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital" in Uijeongbu, South Korea, during the Korean War (1950–53). (straight from the Wikipedia)M*A*S*H is a show that really does it all. It runs the gamut of whimsy (Corporal Klinger and his antics, Hawkeye makes up a Captain and hijinks ensue) to very serious (the whole cast had very weird dreams in one episode about the effects of the war on their minds, Hawkeye and Trapper help a soldier realize that he is horribly racist and needs to get over that real quick and stop being terrible). It is an incredible show that ran for so long and is absolutely worth watching again and again. Even 40 years later, the finale is still the most watched non-live television program, even beating out the OJ verdict.Oh yeah, Boy Meets WorldThe Boys get ready to dive into another episode of Boy Meets World this week as they rewatch "What a Drag." Was it actually a drag? I guess you will have to listen to find out. Also Cameron finally did the math, and Cory bought over 7 million cubic centimeters of cork. A discussion with the cast and production team about Artform's production of A discussion with the cast and production team about Artform's production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at the Broadway Studios Theatre in SE London.A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart.Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (254–184 BC), specifically Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus, and Mostellaria, the musical tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. The plot displays many classic elements of farce, including puns, the slamming of doors, cases of mistaken identity (frequently involving characters disguising themselves as one another), and satirical comments on social class. The title derives from a line often used by vaudeville comedians to begin a story: "A funny thing happened on the way to the theater".Ever wondered what goes into putting on a show? This week The TV Boys sit down to discuss the TV Hall of Fame icon, Alan Alda. Whether acting in the role of Hawkeye or being himself on PBS he's always a fan favorite. *We had some audio issues this week, part of the growing pains of new tech, we should have things back to our normal perfect clarity next week.*

In this episode, we pay tribute to the late, great Lucille Kallen, a true pioneer in television comedy writing. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Toronto, Lucille’s first love was piano, but she soon showed her comedy chops writing live sketches at a “borscht belt” resort in New York’s Pocono Mountains. Based on the strength of her live sketches, she was recruited in 1949 to serve as co-head writer for Sid Caesar’s “Admiral Broadway Review” (later “Your Show Of Shows”), the very first nationally televised comedy sketch program. Her fellow head writer was Mel Tolkin, and the writing staff soon included Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Neil Simon, Larry Gelbart, and Woody Allen. After leaving television, Lucille wrote the novel “Outside There, Somewhere!”, which is widely considered the first comic feminist novel. In this episode, Lucille’s son Paul discusses how she viewed the changing nature of television comedy throughout her life. Paul recalls meeting original "Tonight Show" host Steve Allen, who bemoaned having been “number 2” behind the Sid Caesar show. Lucille would tell Paul about needing to have a strong voice in Sid Caesar’s writers room, where she was the only woman. Paul recalls the time her mother appeared on "The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson," her close friendship with Caesar co-star Imogene Coca, her portrayal in Neil Simon’s play “Laughter on the 23rd Floor,” as well as her role as the inspiration for the Sally character on “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” created by Carl Reiner.

The plot displays many classic elements of farce, including puns, the slamming of doors, cases of mistaken identity (frequently involving characters disguising themselves as one another), and satirical comments on social class. The title derives from a line often used by vaudeville comedians to begin a story: "A funny thing happened on the way to the theater".The musical's original 1962 Broadway run won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Author (Musical). Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us, yep it is our 2nd birthday episode. We wish to say thank you to everyone who listens to us. We really appreciate all the support and encouragement we have received. It has been an amazing experience that we have all enjoyed on the Nerds team. Well, here is to another year of Nerdity and fun, we hope you enjoy everything as we continue to look for those items we enjoy learning about and discussing. First up this week Buck brings us news that Global Warming is being slowed by a phenomenon known as Global Greening. Apparently all the carbon emissions have provided a positive impact for the trees and plants. Now, this is only a small impact and not enough to celebrate with street parties, but still it is some good news. So with this news coming to light and in the wake of the recent bushfires in Australia it might be a good idea to plant some trees or bushes to help the environment. If nothing else it will give the computers and consoles a break for an hour or two. Next up DJ has the first reactions to the new Dune movie, and it is looking promising. Of course Professor and Buck being the fans they are have some reservations, but are excited to see the latest offering when it is released. There is the usual discussion about who might be the best option for director, what were the failures in the previous movies; and what were the successes from them as well. But hopefully one day an offering will be presented that is worthy of Frank Herbert’s legendary work. DJ continues with a discussion on the impact of the Coronavirus on the Chinese film industry. There have been major disruptions in the Chinese economy and a large section of the industry is on hold while China tries to combat this epidemic. We discuss the broad effects of this, but we wish everyone well and hope that this is contained and treated soon. Professor has a list of 14 new games that are planned to be released this next fiscal year by EA. We have a look at the offerings and discuss what we think is the most exciting or interesting of these releases. Now it might interest you to know that what we found as the most interesting games to look forward to. We will tell you, to find out listen in and learn what are the games being released that Professor is most interested to see. Also what game Buck thinks should move across to the EA studio catalogue; and what he thinks is an approach to the new Battlefield game if the crew behind Star Citizen were involved. As usual we have the Shout outs, Remembrances, Birthdays, and Events of Interest for the week. We invite you to check out MySongsSuck, with our man Alex Smith. Also there is there offering of The Story Chunder, which is sure to delight some and perchance disgust others. As always remember to take care of yourselves, look out for each other, and stay hydrated.Global Greening - https://phys.org/news/2020-01-planet-greener-global.html - https://www.nature.com/articles/s43017-019-0001-x First reaction to the new Dune movie are out -https://boundingintocomics.com/2020/01/30/early-reactions-to-denis-villeneuves-dune-describe-it-as-phenomenal-compared-to-lord-of-the-rings/Next victim of the coronavirus hitlist…the Chinese film industry -https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/chinas-film-industry-takes-stock-market-beating-as-trading-resumes-coronavirus-crisis-1275718EA’s plan for 2020…. release 14 games - https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2020-01-31-ea-planning-to-publish-14-games-next-fiscal-yearGames PlayedProfessor– Quake - https://store.steampowered.com/app/2310/QUAKE/ Rating – 2.5/5Buck– Hero Wars - https://www.facebook.com/herowarsgame/Rating – 1.5/5DJ– Ironsight - https://store.steampowered.com/app/715220/Ironsight/Rating – 2/5Other topics discussedOne climate change prediction being wrong - https://wattsupwiththat.com/2015/11/12/one-of-the-longest-running-climate-prediction-blunders-has-disappeared-from-the-internet/Gulf Stream (warm and swift Atlanticocean current that originates in the Gulf of Mexico and stretches to the tip of Florida, and follows the eastern coastlines of the United States and Newfoundland before crossing the Atlantic Ocean as the North Atlantic Current.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_Stream2019 Ozone Hole is the smallest since its smallest- https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2019/2019-ozone-hole-is-the-smallest-on-record-since-its-discoveryWorld’s tallest timber tower in Norway- https://www.dezeen.com/2019/03/19/mjostarne-worlds-tallest-timber-tower-voll-arkitekter-norway/One way to curb climate change: suck carbon from the sky - https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2019/01/carbon-capture-trees-atmosphere-climate-change/Petra (originally known to its inhabitants as Raqmu, is a historical and archaeological city in southern Jordan. Ms. Higgins Clark, whose books have sold more than 100 million copies in the United States alone, was still writing until recently, her daughter said, and had a book published in November. Her heroes were most often female, her villains male, and she said that she wrote about “nice people whose lives are invaded.” There are, however, two things that won’t be found in her books — sex and profanity — and that choice was deliberate. “Let others decide whether or not I’m a good writer,” she said. “I know I’m a good Irish storyteller.” She passed away at Naples, Florida at the age of 92. - 3 February 1995 – Astronaut Eileen Collins becomes the first woman to pilot the Space Shuttle as mission STS-63 gets underway from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. - https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/feb-3-1995-astronaut-eileen-collins-at-the-pilots-station-on-shuttle-discoveryEileen M. Reynolds started out in Hollywood as a child actor at MGM in such movies as Boys Town (1938). Reynolds and Larry Gelbart created CBS' M*A*S*H, which was based on a novel by Richard Hooker and followed the Robert Altman film adaptation. "In directing, I'm always looking for the little humane touch. Something that is real. It could be very, very small," Reynolds said in a 2000 chat for the Archive of American Television website. "It could be a hand on the shoulder. It could be just an extra lingering look on somebody you care about and so forth, for just a fraction. It could be a reaction from somebody … I'm looking for humanity, really. And that goes with comedy or drama." Michael Douglas said that his father's life "was well lived, and he leaves a legacy in film that will endure for generations to come, and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet." He added: "Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday, and which will always remain true. Dad- I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son." In perhaps the most famous -- and certainly most lampooned -- scene from "Spartacus," his fellow rebels, captured by the Roman army, rise to proclaim, "I'm Spartacus!" when told their lives will be spared if they identify him. He died in Beverly hills, California at the age of 103. Remembrances- 3 February 1468 – Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_GutenbergGerman blacksmith, goldsmith, inventor, printer, and publisher who introduced printing to Europe with the printing press. His introduction of mechanical movable type printing to Europe started the Printing Revolution and is regarded as a milestone of the second millennium, ushering in the modern period of human history. It played a key role in the development of the Renaissance,Reformation, the Age of Enlightenment, and the scientific revolution and laid the material basis for the modern knowledge-based economy and the spread of learning to the masses. The use of movable type was a marked improvement on the handwritten manuscript, which was the existing method of book production in Europe, and upon woodblock printing, and revolutionized European book-making. Gutenberg's printing technology spread rapidly throughout Europe and later the world. His major work, the Gutenberg Bible (also known as the 42-line Bible), was the first printed version of the Bible and has been acclaimed for its high aesthetic and technical quality. He died at the age of around 68 in Mainz, Electorate of Mainz in the Holy Roman Empire. - 3 February 1935 – Hugo Junkers - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_JunkersGerman aircraft engineer and aircraft designer who pioneered the design of all-metal airplanes and flying wings. The event later became known as "The Day the Music Died", after singer-songwriter Don McLean referred to it as such in his 1971 song "American Pie". Soon after take-off, late at night and in poor, wintry weather conditions, the pilot lost control of the light aircraft, a Beechcraft Bonanza, which subsequently crashed into a cornfield. Everyone on board was killed. The event has since been mentioned in various songs and films. A number of monuments have been erected at the crash site and in Clear Lake, where an annual memorial concert is also held at the Surf Ballroom, the venue that hosted the artists' last performance. Famous Birthdays- 3 February 1480 – Ferdinand Magellan - https://www.onthisday.com/people/ferdinand-magellan Portuguese explorer who organised the Spanish expedition to the East Indies from 1519 to 1522, resulting in the first circumnavigation of the Earth, completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano. Despite a series of storms and mutinies, they made it through the Strait of Magellan into a body of water he named the "peaceful sea" (the modern Pacific Ocean). The expedition reached the Philippine islands, where Magellan was killed during the Battle of Mactan. The expedition later reached the Spice Islands in 1521 and one of the surviving ships eventually returned home via the Indian Ocean, completing the first circuit of the globe. Magellan had already reached the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia on previous voyages traveling east (from 1505 to 1511–1512). By visiting this area again but now travelling west, Magellan achieved a nearly complete personal circumnavigation of the globe for the first time in history. The AEAO is supported by a battle staff of approximately 20 people, with another dozen responsible for the operation of the aircraft systems. The name Looking Glass, which is another name for a mirror, was chosen for the Airborne Command Post because the mission operates in parallel with the underground command post at Offutt Air Force Base. The Looking Glass was also designed to help ensure COG, continuity and reconstitution of the US government in the event of a nuclear attack on North America. The sperm used in the artificial insemination came from the husband of the woman who bore the baby. This scientific breakthrough established standards and became an agent of change for women suffering from the afflictions of infertility and for women who did not want to pass on genetic disorders to their children. Donor embryo transfer has given women a mechanism to become pregnant and give birth to a child that will contain their husband’s genetic makeup. Although donor embryo transfer as practiced today has evolved from the original non-surgical method, it now accounts for approximately 10% of in vitro fertilization recorded births.IntroArtist – Goblins from MarsSong Title – Super Mario - Overworld Theme (GFM Trap Remix)Song Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GNMe6kF0j0&index=4&list=PLHmTsVREU3Ar1AJWkimkl6Pux3R5PB-QJ Follow us on Facebook - Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/ - Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamated Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrS iTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094 RSS - http://www.thatsnotcanonproductions.com/topshelfnerdspodcast?format=rssInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/General Enquiries Email - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comRate & Review us on Podchaser - https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/nerds-amalgamated-623195

Where is the fandom today, and would they even want a M*A*S*H reboot? What would that even look like? We're giving you the best care anywhere* (as far as a podcast goes) on this week's episode! *Please consult with your physician for any actual medical care you may need. We are not doctors. ## Episode Outline ### Fandom Facts **History and Origins:** > M*A*S*H is an American war comedy-drama television series that aired on CBS from 1972 to 1983. It was developed by Larry Gelbart, adapted from the 1970 feature film M*A*S*H, which, in turn, was based on Richard Hooker's 1968 novel MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors. The series, which was produced with 20th Century Fox Television for CBS, follows a team of doctors and support staff stationed at the "4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital" in Uijeongbu, South Korea, during the Korean War (1950–53). The show's title sequence features an instrumental-only version of "Suicide Is Painless", the original film's theme song which was popular enough to become the UK's best selling song hitting number 1and staying for 3 weeks in May/June of 1980. The show was created after an attempt to film the original book's sequel, M*A*S*H Goes to Maine, failed. The television series is the best-known of the M*A*S*H works, and one of the highest-rated shows in US television history. > — [Wikipedia - M*A*S*H (TV series)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M*A*S*H_(TV_series)) **Search Data:** While it is unclear how popular MASH has been since its initial release in the 1970s, we do have some data from [Google Trends as far back as 2004](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F014gjp). Surprisingly, while interest in the show was on a downturn until December 2014, the show has recently enjoyed a slight upward trend in interest, with some notable spikes in February 2015 (Release on Netflix), January 2017 (Release on Hulu), and March 2018 (More episodes released on Hulu). The top ten countries for MASH, by search volume, are as follows: Albania (By a _large_ margin), Czechia, Slovakia, United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Romania, Norway, and Sweeden. [// Could be unrelated: MASH = Ministry of Science and Education]: # **Fan Demographics:** From a very rough self-selecting sample of folks on reddit, we were able to get some data on what today's fans of MASH look like... in terms of age at least. Through some quick javascript math on the thread ["What is the average age of the MASH viewer?](https://www.reddit.com/r/mash/comments/51cvx4/what_is_the_average_age_of_the_mash_viewer_how/), we get the following data of the approximately 100 data points: - Max age: 54 - Mean age: 28.2 - Median age: 27 - Mode age: 30 - Min age: 10 Other than that, data is scarce... other than this tidbit from Mental Floss: > Seventy-seven percent of the people watching television in the United States on the night of Monday, February 28, 1983 were watching the two-and-a-half-hour series finale, “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen.” That was 121.6 million people. A company only had to pay $30,000 to run a 30-second commercial when M*A*S*H got started in 1972. For the series finale, a 30-second spot cost $450,000. > — [Mental Floss - 17 Things You Might Not Know About M*A*S*H](http://mentalfloss.com/article/68457/17-painless-facts-about-mash) **Fanac Fast Facts:** - On the fan works archive Archive Of Our Own, there are [just over 1000 fan works related to MASH](https://archiveofourown.org/tags/MASH%20(TV)/works): - Top three categories: M/M (528), Gen (352), F/M (208) - ...Almost all, of which, are related to the TV series (i.e. there isn't a prominent overlap with other fandoms, though there is overlap) - Top three characters: Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce (793), B. A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum (Original Broadway Cast) Amazon / iTunes / Spotify SHOW NOTES One of Jimi’s all-time favourite writers is Mr Larry Gelbart who wrote the very effective book for ‘Forum,’ but why not check out his own book - ‘Laughing Matters’ - filled with fascinating tidbits? So whether it’s ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood,’ ‘A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder,’ or ‘A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum’ (these shows don’t like short titles do they?) - what do you think? Does farce work on a musical theatre stage? Do the songs slow down the action? Come and tell us what you think! Sondheim is quite open about the fact he’s down on his lyrics for this show. You can get all of them, including Hero’s fantastic cut Echo song, in Sondheim’s collection ‘Finishing the Hat’ - a staple for every musical theatre household. Ruthie Henshall and Carol Burnett are among the groups who have taken Forum’s songs and put them to good use outwith the confines of the show itself. Here they are in Putting it Together with their rendition of ‘Lovely.’ Also check out one of the campest songs in all of musical theatre, ‘Everybody Ought to Have a Maid,’ at Sondheim’s birthday concert at the Proms! M*A*S*H Today we cover Season 2, Episode #8 - The Trial of Henry Blake 32nd Episode Overall Directed by Don Weis Written by McLean Stevenson, Larry Gelbart, Laurence Marks Production code K408 Original air date November 3, 1973 Set during the Korean War in the 1950’s Plot Summary: Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake faces a disciplinary review after several complaints from Majors Burns and Houlihan. Among the issues at hand are the 4077th's Kentucky Derby Day, in which the doctors raced around the compound pushing nurses on gurneys; allowing Radar to sell wing-tip shoes tent-to-tent; and failing to stop Klinger's attempt to desert on a homemade hang glider (resembling "a big red bird with fuzzy pink feet"). However, the most serious charge is aiding and comforting the enemy in the form of giving supplies to Meg Cratty, a nurse who runs an orphanage in North Korea.Hawkeye and Trapper John attempt to go to the trial with evidence that will exonerate Henry, but Major Burns (in temporary command) confines them to quarters, guts the swamp and even strips Hawkeye and Trapper to their underwear. Trapper and Hawkeye escape and go to the courtroom, taking Nurse Cratty with them. She testifies that the North Koreans that Henry is accused of aiding were refugees and children at a civilian clinic. When Burns and Houlihan arrive at the hearing, they cite Hawkeye and Trapper's escape (and technical status as AWOL) as proof of Blake's being unfit to command. Blake defends himself, saying he never set out to be a junior General MacArthur, but that he was only a doctor trying to run a hospital, and that his aid to Meg Cratty improved the life expectancy of the babies born in the area. He then tells the hearing panel to hang him for that if they wish. The head of the hearing board would like to drop the charges in light of the new evidence, but Frank refuses, so Hawkeye and Trapper use what they know best to change his mind: blackmail. Hawkeye jots down a letter threatening to tell Frank's wife about Hot Lips, and of course Frank and Hot Lips give in and drop the charges. M*A*S*H Today we cover Season 2, Episode #2 - 5 O'Clock Charlie 26th Episode Overall Directed by Norman Tokar Written by Larry Gelbart, Keith Walker & Laurence Marks Production code K403 Original air date September 22, 1973 Set during the Korean War in the 1950’s Plot Summary: For six weeks, an ammunition depot near the camp has been the target of a punctual but inept North Korean bomber pilot. Every day at 5:00 he flies overhead and attempts to hit the depot with a single hand-thrown bomb. The pilot, nicknamed "5 O'Clock Charlie," has been so reliably unsuccessful that the denizens of the 4077th have begun a betting pool based on how far away from the target his bomb will land. Only Frank and Margaret regard "Charlie" as a serious threat. Frank requests an anti-aircraft gun, and Brigadier General Crandall Clayton comes to the camp to assess the situation. Clayton, who has placed the ammo dump near the hospital so that the enemy will leave it alone (a tactic he says he learned from the Germans), is initially skeptical of the need for a gun; on the next raid, though, Charlie destroys not the ammo dump but Gen. Clayton's jeep. He agrees to send the gun, and Frank takes charge of it. Hawkeye and Trapper argue that the presence of the anti-aircraft gun will attract more competent bombers, noting that "fire draws fire," but Frank is more interested in drilling his "platoon" of three Korean soldiers. Eventually, Hawkeye, Trapper and Cardozo conclude that the problem is not the gun, but the ammo dump. They dye sheets and place them on the ammo dump to help Charlie find his target. When Charlie makes his next pass, Hawkeye and Trapper confuse Frank's men into aiming the gun directly at the ammo dump. Charlie misses his target yet again, but when Frank orders his troops to fire the gun, they hit the ammo dump, destroying it Hope you enjoy it, Kenny, Meds & Al Find Us on the Web: Main website - http://MASH4077Podcast.com Twitter - @MASH4077Podcast Facebook Fan Page - http://www.facebook.com/MASH4077Podcast MASH 4077 Podcast Blog - http://www.MASH4077Podcast.blogspot.com MASH 4077 Podcast Merchandise - http://www.zazzle.com/mash4077podcast Email Us - MASH4077Podcast@Gmail.com Podcast promo’s played during the show this week: Alien Nation: The Newcomers Podcast Geek Therapy © Geekyfanboy Productions
