Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Thursday, Dec. 21 The WV SBDC helps a Morgantown store “kick off” its debut. Fiesta dinnerware has been brightening America's tables since the Great Depression. And Theatre West Virginia revives popular outdoor drama, “Honey in the Rock”...on today's daily304. #1 – From WV SBDC – Tyler McElroy is the owner of Classic Kickz, a sneaker shop on High Street in Morgantown. The store carries a variety of limited edition shoes and most sought after apparel from some of the top brands. McElroy said after college he wanted to pursue his dreams of owning his own business selling shoes and clothes. That's when he turned to the West Virginia Small Business Development Center for assistance. WV SBDC Business Coach Frank Goldsborough Jr. was able to help McElroy with repairs to the storefront by helping him secure an ARPA grant from the City of Morgantown. “He's been a lifesaver to us,” McElroy said. “After our first meeting I mentioned other issues we were having like taxes, running the business better, keeping up with the books and money coming in and out. Frank told me about his background in accounting and we hit it off.” Financial analysis is just one of many services that the WV SBDC can provide to small businesses in West Virginia. From pitchers to platters and everything in between, Fiesta's vibrant, colorful products have earned it a seat at dinner tables across the country for more than 80 years. To understand how Fiesta became an iconic American brand located in West Virginia is to understand its rich history. Picture this: It's the 1930s, and the United States is in the midst of the Great Depression. Spirits are low, the world seems dark, and people are in need of hope. Then, Joseph M. Wells Sr., the president of The Homer Laughlin China Company, had a visionary idea: help people brighten up their tables and their lives. Color, he believed, was the answer to the woes of the Depression and, in 1936, Fiesta was born. Soon, homes across America were flooded with saturated shades of Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, and Ivory. According to general manager Gayle Oaks, along with “Hatfields & McCoys,” the musical drama will be performed in repertoire in June 2024 as the production company Theatre West Virginia returns to its roots as a provider of cultural entertainment. Oaks said that with the boost in tourism that resulted from the creation of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in 2020, investment in historical dramas was a profitable direction. “Heritage tourism is far and away the leading sector of the tourism market in the U.S.,” Oaks said, “and we recognize that's what many of the 1.7 million tourists coming to the park each year want.” Visit www.www.theatrewestvirginia.org to learn more about upcoming shows and tickets. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Tuesday, June 27 A family's passion for the rails spans generations on Cass Scenic Railroad trip…Mon Forest officials are seeking WV-themed Christmas tree skirts for the U.S. Capitol display… and Theatre West Virginia is back, with a new production and refurbishments to the stage…on today's daily304. #1 – From THE WHEELING INTELLIGENCER – There's something quite magical about an old steam train chugging along the mountainous terrain deep in the hills of West Virginia. For all those folks young and old who have grown up with a fascination for trains, a trip to Cass, West Virginia is just the ticket. The author's dad was one of those guys who loved trains. So in 1964 when she was just a youngster, her parents and family friends piled their respective children and picnic lunches into two station wagons and headed south to the Cass Scenic Railroad in Pocahontas County. Twenty years later she returns to Cass, this time with her husband, their son and her husband's parents. Turns out her father-in-law also had a love of trains and passed that interest onto his own two sons. One of his last wishes was to ride in a steam engine so the family planned the trip in early fall when a chill was in the air and the colors of the season did not disappoint. Read more: https://www.theintelligencer.net/life/features/2023/06/fathers-sons-and-grandsons-share-passion-for-the-rails/ #2 – From WV EXPLORER – The U.S. Capitol is going wild and wonderful this Christmas as West Virginia comes to the fore as the nation's forest and outdoor recreation wonderland. In addition to providing the 70- to 80-foot tree that will be displayed on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol this holiday season, smaller trees are also being provided to federal offices in Washington, D.C., along with ornaments and tree skirts that celebrate the Mountain State. Officials at the Monongahela National Forest are seeking assistance from groups and individuals to help provide some of the dozens of tree skirts that will be needed as part of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree initiative. Suggested themes for the tree skirts include iconic West Virginia locales, native wildlife, famous West Virginians, outdoor recreation, West Virginia culture and more. This year's theme for the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree is “Endlessly Wild and Wonderful.” Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/2023/05/24/west-virginia-u-s-capitol-monongahela-christmas/ #3 – From THE REGISTER-HERALD – Theatre West Virginia has announced its 2023 season lineup, including the longtime favorite “Hatfields & McCoys” and, new this year, “Rocket Boys,” the original Homer Hickman musical from 2008. The cast and crew of nearly 50 people met for the first time recently amid a flurry of activity ranging from vocal auditions to costume and set checks to needed maintenance and repairs. The stage has been resurfaced, the back “cyc” has been redone, the top towers refinished along with additional work to the “Hatfields & McCoys” houses. Working collaboratively with the superintendent of the National Park Service is a top priority, said Theatre West Virginia's General Manager Gayle Oaks. “The Park Service updated our bathrooms, and they are amazing,” she said. In today's episode Nicky P and Lizzie find themselves at odds once again over the review of Netflix's Klaus. Nick was an absolute tearful mess and Lizzie was in a rage over political propaganda stuffed into the movie. Even Jason Schwartzman wasn't enough to get her into this movie featuring the most militarized mail service you have ever seen, The movie centers around a town buried in the snow with a major Hatfields & McCoys thing going on and a dickhead with an impossible mission. Nicky P is too flustered to even type this properly so just go and enjoy this fantastic tale of terrible people becoming good. Beverages For Round The Fireplace Nicky P is enjoying a White Christmas Margarita today care of a recipe found over at delish.com featuring unsweetened coconut milk, silver tequila, triple sec, lime juice & ice. Its a little island flavor for this very northern film. Lizzie has shown up today with a Peppermint White Russian gleaned from theforkedspoon.com's recipe featuring Kahlúa, Peppermint Schnapps and, Vodka and pairs quite well with her outfit today. Christmas Sweater Fever Nicky P is looking sharp in his horror greats ugly sweater featuring Jason Voorhees, Freddie Kreuger, Chucky and Michael Myers and who doesn't need a lil slasher in their holiday. Lizzie has shown up today looking very soviet in her north pole military outfit with Reindeer shoulder adornments. While not a big fan of military anything her butt does look great in uniform. [Watch the video interview on our YouTube Channel] EMMY-nominated composer Tony Morales joins us for a new All Access. Tony got his big break by having a chance meeting with Harry Gregson-Williams in a pizza shop, this led to commercial work and eventually session musician work along with being an additional arranger and orchestrator for Brian Tyler. We discuss how Tony's career grew once he got some early experience, and how he developed his sound as a composer on his solo projects. We also dive into many of Tony's projects such as his scores for Bloodline, Hatfields & McCoys, Scorpion, Elena of Avalor and An Actor Prepares. Tony breaks down the process of scoring TV animation with Disney's Elena of Avalor, and how even with children's animation there is change in how much music is needed and how it acts as a narrative device. We also discuss the new film An Actor Prepares, starring Jeremy Irons and Jack Huston. Tony breaks down character scoring and dealing with tone in comedy. Some other topics we discuss is how to find confidence in your voice as a storyteller as well as how to deal with rejection, whether that's being replaced on a project or having a cue rejected. Tony Morales is such a great talent and voice who has quickly established himself as a versatile and in-demand storyteller. It was great having him as a guest on All Access! Interview Produced & Presented by Kaya Savas Special Thanks: Tony Morales, Sabrina Hutchinson, Javier Garcia, Defiant PR, The Krakower Group
Tony Morales takes some time to chat about his recent Emmy nominated score for Hatfields & McCoys, which he co-composed with John Debney. Tony explains the research that went into the music in finding the style of the setting and era through instrumentation. He also shares how John and him structured the score for such a massive mini-series and how they condensed the score for an album release. A great talent and a great interview.

Have you been listening to the inspiring and educational podcasts from the likes of Mark Maron and Jimmy Carrane (among others)? They interview wildly successful performers like Jon Favreau and Carl Reiner. And they're great. But sometimes it feels like their careers are so faaaaaaar away and out of reach. It would be so cool to have heard them speak like right after they got their first big break - to connect the dots and figure out how they did it. But those podcasts aren't out there yet. Or are they? Yup! They are! Our own, brilliant Ryan Bailey has begun interviewing our own success stories! They talk about how they got their start, their challenges and hurdles, how they overcame the odds, their crazy on-set stories, and sometimes how Lesly and the Kahnstitute have influenced and shaped their careers. Kahnversations is an informal podcast that asks a handful of our more notorious actors about their experiences acting in Hollywood and their time training with the one and only Lesly Kahn. Listen in as these actors dish it all, in a casual interview format. Follow along and enjoy a loose conversation about the actor and their process and how one small, yet mighty, lady influenced them through her non-method and lots of tough love. The first of this podcast series is an interview with actors Angelique Cabral (2013 half-hour comedy pilot ENLISTED, Kahnstituent since 2009) and Jesse Soffer (2013 one-hour dramatic pilot HATFIELDS & MCCOYS, 2012 series regular MOB DOCTOR, Kahnstituent since 2008).
