Join the Specialty Care Managment Nursing team and special guest Dr. Randall Smith, D.M.D as we talk about an all- too- silent health destroyer. From the heartache of his father's health struggles to his own diagnosis of sleep apnea, Dr. Smith unveils the gravity of this condition that, when left untreated, leads to serious health issues like hypertension, kidney disease and congestive heart failure. Our discussion lays bare the importance of quality sleep, not as a luxury, but as a cornerstone of bodily repair; and we confront the startling fact that 80% with sleep apnea are walking through life undiagnosed and untreated."Untreated sleep apnea will take 7-10 years off your life""Untreated moderate-to-severe sleep apnea will cost a patient upwards of $200,000 in other medical bills"'Having untreated sleep apnea is worse than being a pack a day smoker'30 million people in the US have sleep apnea and 80% of those people don't know itRisk factors include: Snoring, waking at night to urinate, waking with morning headaches, waking with gasping for air, daytime fatigue, and others....if your BMI is over 30 - your risk of sleep apnea is 70%Consequences of untreated sleep apnea include: hypertension, cardiomegaly (heart enlargement), CHF (Congestive Heart Failure), cognitive decline, and more...The dentist's role in the fight against sleep apnea is not to be underestimated, and Dr. Smith spotlights this with expertise and passion. We touch on everything from the cellular restoration that occurs during sleep, to the clues that could indicate you're at risk and that you want to be sure to talk to your doctor about. In our conversation, he also addresses the high-stakes long-term health risks of leaving sleep apnea unchecked. By bringing to light the barriers to diagnosis and the tools at our disposal, we're not just talking about sleep—we're discussing a potential pivot in the longevity and quality of our lives. While the gold standard is polysomnography - in a sleep lab, Dr. Smith talks about the ease and the savings of the home sleep test. Your PCP can order your sleep test, or in some states, your dentist may be able facilitate that process of obtaining a prescription for your sleep study as well. He also walks us through the various treatments for sleep apnea including: positional therapy, CPAP, the potential game-changer of oral appliances, and the cutting-edge Inspire implant. But the take-home message is this: in many cases, weight loss and lifestyle changes can be just as powerful. And early diagnosis and treatment can help you enjoy a health life.YOU can absolutely do something about this threat. Talking to your health care provider about your risk and getting a sleep study are the first steps to help you take hold of your health and breathe easier—the restful nights you seek may just be on the horizon.Great Books he shared today:Matthew Walker: Why We SleepJames Nestor: BreathDr. Bradley Bale and Amy Doneen: Beat the Heart Attack Gene

Every system in your body is uniquely connected, but did you ever think that your teeth could be connected to your heart health, joint pain, or gut health? Not only can your teeth and gums tell you a lot about what is going on in your body, but they can also be causing some of those problems. Today we talk with Dr. Kelly Blodgett, a holistic dentist in Portland OR who is on a mission to reverse the negative stereotype of dentistry. Not only can your teeth be trying to tell you what is going on in your body, but they could also be the trigger for some health problems like heart health or gastrointestinal issues. Episode #229: The Red Flag Warnings of Heart Attack and Stroke with Drs. Bradley Bale and Amy Doneen Today's Episode: Drs. Bradley Bale and Amy Doneen are the doctors behind the BaleDoneen Method. This is a method practiced by healthcare practitioners to detect and treat cardiovascular disease to halt, stabilize, and even reverse cardiovascular disease and help people avoid large life events like heart attacks and strokes. Through their research, they have discovered that treating inflammation can also prevent damage to the small vessels which leads to many of the diseases caused by aging. Dentists play a huge role in the process, because periodontal disease or endonitic disease are inflammation factors. They believe in an integrative approach where all of the healthcare providers work together to fight inflammation and be on the lookout for markers that can indicate inflammation. Today, they share some red flags that dental providers can look out for and ultimately save their patient's health. Dr. Bale and Dr. Doneen are the authors of https://www.amazon.com/Beat-Heart-Attack-Gene-Revolutionary/dp/1681620227 (The Heart Attack Gene), a valuable read for cutting edge dental professionals. Show Notes [02:45] Dr. Doneen and Dr. Bale have been working together for the last 20 years. They look at arterial disease through the lens of inflammation and early disease detection. [03:42] The BaleDoneen method also has an impact on protecting the small vessels that cause diseases of aging. [04:04] Dental colleagues are key in fighting inflammation. [04:43] Inflammation drives the formation of arterial disease and triggers events like heart attack and stroke. High-risk periodontal pathogens will drive that inflammation. [08:07] Dr. Doneen shares why fighting inflammation is so important now during the pandemic. They have research that demonstrates causality with high-risk pathogens. [10:42] The common denominator of people who perish with COVID-19 is micro vascular disease in the pulmonary tract. It's all due to inflammation. [14:08] Dr. Doneen shares red flags such as a diagonal earlobe crease Frank's sign. Male pattern baldness is another sign. White coat hypertension also places people at risk. [16:57] Dr. Bale talks about fordyce granules and how that can be a marker of hyperlipidemia which can increase risk of arterial disease. [18:18] Anybody with a blood pressure of 120/80 is at risk and should monitor their blood pressure. [21:09] It's critical to go to the dentist and maintain periodontal health. [24:18] Beat the Heart Attack Gene was written to help the public learn how to look for inflammatory markers and fight inflammation. [25:48] Dr. Doneen and Dr. Bale are excited about the future of preventing microvascular disease. That's what their new book will be about. [28:34] Dr. Doneen shares a special offer on their 16-hour preceptorship program on the BaleDoneen Method. They have an online program. You can learn more on https://baledoneen.com/ (BaleDoneen.com). [30:29] Incorporating information from The Heart Attack Gene is cutting-edge dental science. Hygienists who are taking care of periodontal disease are saving lives. Dr. Bradley Bale has been on the cutting edge of heart health for decades. I'm excited to talk with him because this is such an important topic for new and established dentists. There is evidence that oral health, heart health, and overall health are not only related, but can be used as tools for diagnosis and treatment. Dentists are in a unique position to be at the front lines of patient health, and Dr. Bradley Bale is here to break it down for us. Dr. Bale is a medical doctor and he and Dr. Amy Doneen are the founders of https://baledoneen.com/ (The BaleDoneen Method). They are also co-authors of https://www.amazon.com/Beat-Heart-Attack-Gene-Revolutionary/dp/1681620227 (Beat the Heart Attack Gene). What is so exciting is that there is solid scientific evidence that shows that oral health is a sign of heart health, brain health, and more. This information can also be used to educate your patients and team about the important work you are doing by saving lives through early detection of disease. Treatment can prevent the occurence of heart attack, stroke and more. Dr. Bale shares how he got involved in this field and how important it is for him to help his patients by saving lives. He also shares an exciting new program that he's introduced to help all of us assess our arterial health, because heart attacks and strokes are preventable. Show Notes [02:20] Dr. Bradley Bale is a medical doctor. When he was in family practice, he would see his patients have strokes and heart attacks. [03:10] Dr. Bale knew Dr. Paul Shields who had one of the first pieces of equipment that could identify coronary calcification. It was called electron beam tomography. [03:39] Dr. Bale used CT scans to look for signs of disease in his patients. Dr. Shields recommended treating calcification before a heart attack. [04:01] The patients who took the test and received the treatment didn't have heart attacks and strokes. The thought of inflammation being the cause of heart attacks was just beginning to evolve in the early 1990s. [04:51] He started working with Dr. Amy Doneen around the year 2000. Dr. Doneen did her thesis paper on Dr. Bale's coronary data. [05:37] Dr. Bale and Dr. Doneen wrote the book https://www.amazon.com/Beat-Heart-Attack-Gene-Revolutionary/dp/1681620227 (Beat the Heart Attack Gene). [05:57] The book has become a national bestseller. It's focuses on the heart attack and stroke prevention care that Dr. Bale and Dr. Doneen give. It also has a section that focuses on oral health. [06:23] They have a new book coming out at the end of this year. It's about how their care reaches way beyond preventing heart attacks and strokes. Their patients also have an extremely low risk of dementia, Alzheimer's, heart failure, kidney failure, and ED. [08:15] There is a recent correlation with Alzheimers and gingivitis. If you want to have good health, it starts with a healthy mouth. [09:18] Dr. Bale's grandfather was a dentist and his oldest son is an oral surgeon. There's a ton of evidence between the health of gums and teeth and risk for heart attack and stroke. [10:17] They now have evidence that show that high-risk periodontal pathogens are actually a cause of heart disease. [11:23] Living at a low altitude was one of the number one ranked reasons for being at risk for heart disease. Number two is oral health. [12:41] Number three was skipping breakfast, and number four was having more than two to three drinks a day. [14:04] Dr. Bale shares a story about a patient who had disease in his arteries and high inflammatory markers. Without seeing the patient, Dr. Bale knew he had an infected tooth. It turned out Dr. Bale was right. After dental treatment, his markers dropped down to almost normal. [19:10] Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death and disability. It's also occurring in younger people. It's critical to maintain the wellness of the gums and teeth. [19:56] Dentists need to educate...

On this episode, we're featuring a special RAAD Fest discussion from last year between Dr. Gladden and Dr. Jeffry Life, a doctor who has focused his practice on healthy aging and helping patients avoiding heart attacks and strokes. He incorporates the Bale-Doneen Method (learn more in the book Beat the Heart Attack Gene) in his treatment plans, which is about aggressively looking for vascular inflammation that causes heart disease and working to stop it. They discuss some of the testing that can be done to identify vascular risk factors, which fall outside of the normal insurance-based model of healthcare. Dr. Life describes what he does for himself to improve his own health, fitness and longevity. He and Dr. Gladden discuss hormone replacement and HGH and when it is appropriate treatment. Special Guest: In 1997, Dr. Jeffry Life was a board-certified family practice physician who was 59 years old, overweight, poorly conditioned body and in rapidly declining health. He couldn’t tie his shoes without losing his breath. His stomach was huge, his muscles and joints ached, and he was miserable. He decided it was time to focus some much-needed medical attention on himself. Not knowing where to start, he began reading fitness magazines and came across an article that featured the winners of the Body-for-LIFE contest. He followed a low-glycemic/low-fat diet, took supplements, and plunged into a heavy exercise regimen with help from a former Navy Seal personal trainer, Ernie Baul. At the end of 1998, at 60 years of age and after consistently eating right and training right, he became the GRAND CHAMPION in Bill Phillip’s 1998 Body-for-LIFE contest. He continued his commitment to the Fitness Lifestyle, yet despite my hard work and dedication, he started losing ground as he edged toward 63. He was slowly losing muscle mass, and strength and was regaining body fat. His energy level was waning, as was his libido. He had heard about the Anti-Aging Medicine Movement, so he investigated further. He learned a whole new level of protocols and philosophies and immediately agreed to become a patient. Within a couple weeks, Life started to see and feel a marked shift in his body, mind and spirit. He was once again becoming a vibrant, healthy and happy man. It was life-altering and became the catalyst that moved him from Family Medicine to healthy aging medicine. He wanted every man and woman that struggled as he had to have hope for a better life. Today, at 78 years of age, he is in the best shape of his life. He’s in the gym 5 days a week. He has a thriving practice in Charleston, West Virginia (The Life Center for Healthy Aging), and he has authored three books: The Life Plan, Mastering the Life Plan and The Life Plan Diet. Dr. Amy Doneen runs http://theheartattackandstrokepreventioncenter.com/ (The Heart Attack & Stroke Prevention Center) in Spokane, WA. She has academic appointments at the Washington State University School of Medicine and University of Kentucky Dental School. She is also the author of http://a.co/5gioCHS (Beat the Heart Attack Gene). We have had her on the show before, and it was so much fun we ran out of time. She is brilliant, and you will see how everything from medicine to dental ties together in this show. We talk about the connection between cardiovascular health and periodontal and endodontal health. Dr. Amy Doneen is extremely passionate about this subject and has the goal of knocking heart attack off the top of the list as the number one cause of death in the US by 2020. She emphasizes the importance of dental and medical practitioners working together and offers practical solutions. You can find Amy here: http://theheartattackandstrokepreventioncenter.com/ (The Heart Attack & Stroke Prevention Center) http://a.co/5gioCHS (Beat the Heart Attack Gene) https://www.baledoneen.com/ (Bale Doneen Method) https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-amy-doneen-dnp-arnp-01b01866/ (Dr. Amy Doneen on LinkedIn) Show Notes [02:31] How Beat the Heart Attack Gene is written for everyone from patients to doctors. This book will actually have patients wanting to come to the office more often once they realize how important dental health is for stroke and heart attack prevention. [02:57] Heart attacks and strokes are claiming lives at alarming rates. Our passion is to remove heart attacks as the number one cause of death by 2020. This would be impossible without the help of our dental colleagues. [04:04] We are passionate about nurses, doctors, and dentists talking to each other and realizing that this is connected to the entire body. [04:35] The high risk of periodontal pathogens and how they affect the heart health. Patients are left vulnerable if you ignore what is going on in the mouth. [05:45] No one spends more time proactively with human beings. This is an incredible dental opportunity to slow things down and make an impact to the people to you serve. [06:34] How the medical system is broken because it picks people up after they have already failed or had a heart attack or stroke. [07:05] People slowly develop plaque in the wall of the artery. The bodies natural response is to heal it with a scab. If the scab blocks the flow of blood it is a heart attack in the heart or a stroke in the brain. We look at the causal effects of vascular disease including periodontal pathogens. [08:31] There are many causes of heart disease, but periodontal and endodontic problems are major causes. Dentists and hygienists deserve huge praise in the world of cardiovascular health. [09:42] Read the literature and become your own expert. Make this a conversation instead of a challenging topic. The gum line and the roots of the teeth can cause heart attacks or plaque development. [11:02] The Dental Endorsement Package which allows dentists to use Dr. Doneen's branding to endorse dentists that do their method. [11:48] They provide endorsed dentists with packets and brochures to educate their patients. [12:13] Finding a medical provider that is aligned with understanding inflammation as it pertains to cardiovascular health. [13:22] The Preceptorship program is a 17 hour course that goes over what causes heart disease and all of the tools and treatments available to manage it. This course brings everyone up to a new level of understanding. The method is proven. [14:57] Periodontal disease is a medical problem with a dental solution. [15:16] Inflammation and genetics in precision health care. [16:05] Having precision responses to pathogens based on individual genetics. How genetics are one of the most affordable tests that we can do. [17:12] Genetic tests that give plausible health information....
One of the hottest books in all of dentistry is http://beattheheartattackgene.com/ (Beat the Heart Attack Gene). If you haven't read it, you should pick it up. I have one of the authors Dr. Amy Doneen on the show today. I had the other author Dr. Bradley Bale on a previous episode. Dr. Amy Doneen co-founded the https://www.baledoneen.com/ (Bale Doneen Method) and is the owner and medical director of http://theheartattackandstrokepreventioncenter.com/ (The Heart Attack & Stroke Prevention Center). We talk about the connection between dental and periodontal health and heart attack and stroke. Dr. Doneen and Dr. Bale are trying to get the word out about this important connection and create awareness for all medical professionals. The root cause of vascular inflammation needs to be addressed when treating cardiovascular health, and silent periodontal pathogens could be driving this inflammation. You can find Amy here: http://theheartattackandstrokepreventioncenter.com/ (The Heart Attack & Stroke Prevention Center) http://a.co/5gioCHS (Beat the Heart Attack Gene) https://www.baledoneen.com/ (Bale Doneen Method)
I start off with a QOD that is quite good if I do say so myself and then we go straight into Part 4 of Beat the Heart Attack Gene by Bale and Doneen. Key tests are discussed and then the top Myths of cholesterol are shattered! You will be surprised by what you thought you knew and what is accurate. I then discuss the life and works of Galen, an early century physician, and surgeon to the Gladiators. This guy has an influence on medicine and surgery for over 1200 years! I then discuss a case of hypertrophic gingival and CO2 laser ablation and crown lengthening and you can see before and after pictures at the interesting cases section online.

The episode tears off a big bite of the book review on Beat the Heart Attack Gene by Bale and Doneen and will not disappoint. There is quite the section on Hormone Replacement Therapy for women that everyone should hear. I then discuss a large oral antral communication that took two attempts at closure. In this episode, I go into part 2 of the book review by Bale and Doneen and really get into some interesting facts and statistics that will help you understand the risks our patients are at everyday and the risks we have for strokes and heart attacks. Understanding these risks takes us one step closer to reducing those risks. I do have a quote from Winston Churchill for you as well as an interesting case with pictures and all of a C02 laser frenectomy and a great picture showing the gingival stripping and bone loss that a high frenum pull call lead to. In this episode, I start a new book review that might save your life. Beat the Heart Attack Gene is a really interesting, meaty book about systemic inflammation caused by many different sources including oral sources and how to prevent heart attacks and strokes through a scientific comprehensive approach. This is a must read for all Americans. I discuss and interesting article about surgical site infections with jaw surgery and come away with actionable points to help prevent those. The interesting case shows a cool radiograph of an impacted #20 that destroyed #19 and the challenge of that extraction.
