Our healthcare system treats us like it's one size fits all, yet that's not how true healing works, especially when it comes to chronic conditions. Today's guest will help us understand how to fill the gap we experience with Western medicine, including the difference between signs vs. symptoms, and empowers our individualized healthcare. On this episode of Salad with a Side of Fries, host Jenn Trepeck welcomes Functional Medicine Nutritionist and educator Andrea Nakayama to explore why chronic conditions require more than just a diagnosis and a prescription. They unpack Andrea's “three roots, many branches” model, revealing how digestion, inflammation, and genetics lie at the heart of chronic illness—and how nurturing the "soil" around them can lead to true healing. From nutrition habits to the importance of bio-individuality, this conversation empowers you to become an informed partner in your health care. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, who discusses wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE:(00:00) Intro: Our healthcare system is one size fits all(05:08) Andrea shares her motivation for her journey into functional nutrition, and a discussion of Western medicine(07:41) Should every person receive the same treatment for the same chronic condition(11:45) How to choose a guide in the health equation(16:40) Knowing the difference between your signs vs. symptoms(21:59) Andrea walks us through the “three roots and many branches” model(28:36) The roles digestion and inflammation play in our health(33:37) Tiers to nutrition mastery. Tier one is our non-negotiables(36:40) Don't neglect your passion and purpose(38:48) Andrea's non-negotiable trifecta: Sleep, poop, and blood sugarKEY TAKEAWAYS:Chronic health conditions must be understood through a systems-based lens, not just symptom management. Every chronic issue has three core roots—genes, digestion, and inflammation. Healing begins by nurturing these “roots” and the surrounding “soil,” rather than chasing individual symptoms alone. Western medicine excels in acute care but often falls short in managing chronic conditions. Patients are frequently seen through the lens of their diagnosis rather than as whole individuals, resulting in treatments that overlook their unique health histories and personal needs. One of the most powerful tools patients can use is specific, emotion-free communication based on personal health tracking. By clearly distinguishing between signs (measurable indicators like fever or rash) and symptoms (subjective experiences like fatigue or pain) and offering detailed timelines of when and how issues arise, patients empower providers to better understand and address their unique health needs.Supporting foundational health can start with three simple, non-negotiable nutrition habits: include fat, fiber, and protein at every meal or snack to help stabilize blood sugar; eat the rainbow to boost fiber and phytonutrient intake while feeding your microbiome; and know your yes-no-maybe list to understand better how specific foods impact your body. Tracking what makes you feel great, what doesn't, and what you're unsure about builds awareness and equips you to have more productive, personalized conversations with your healthcare provider.QUOTES: (07:41) “The first two gaps I encountered were that people are treated like their diagnosis. So, when you are in the medical system, you are your endometriosis, your fibroids, your breast cancer, your PMS. You are your symptom. The other gap was that everybody with the same symptom or diagnosis was treated the same.” - Andrea Nakayama(09:34) “A chronic condition means you're sick and you're not getting better. There's things going on for a long time, and our medical system isn't trained to address chronic conditions.” Andrea Nakayama(25:32) “The three roots of any chronic condition are always our genes, digestion and inflammation. All three need to be tended to for the branches to express themselves more fully.” - Andrea Nakayama(36:53) “We have an episode called the Longevity Equation, and one about Blue Zones and one of the big factors there that everybody seems to overlook is community and connection.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramNutrition Nugget: Genes and EpigeneticsSalad With a Side of Fries: The Longevity EquationSalad With a Side of Fries: Blue Zones: A Blueprint for Physical and Mental HealthSalad With a Side of Fries: The Down and DirtyGUEST RESOURCES:Andrea Nakayama - WebsiteFunctional Nutrition Alliance - WebsiteAndrea Nakayama - InstagramFunctional Nutrition Alliance - YouTubeAndrea Nakayama - PinterestAndrea Nakayama, Functional Nutritionist & EducatorAndrea Nakayama - Functional Nutrition Alliance | LinkedInGUEST BIOGRAPHY:Andrea is a Functional Medicine Nutritionist and educator who has led thousands of clients and teaches even more coaches and clinicians worldwide. Are you navigating perimenopause or menopause while also managing chronic health conditions? Or perhaps perimenopause has triggered an underlying, previously dormant issue? Traditional healthcare may not be enough to combat the symptoms, but do not fear! Today's guest is here to teach us how your nervous system, immune system, and hormones can all work together to support healing and longevity. This week, host Jenn Trepeck is joined by Dr. Jessica Drummond, Founder and CEO of The Integrative Women's Health Institute. Together, they explore how seemingly “silent” chronic conditions like endometriosis, pelvic pain, autoimmune disorders or even long covid, can complicate menopause—and what you can do about it. Dr. Drummond shares her insights on calming the nervous system, building metabolic health through nutrient-dense habits, and using tools like heart rate variability (HRV) to guide recovery. IN THIS EPISODE: (00:00) The impact of menopause on silent chronic conditions(05:44) Dr. Jessica Drummond reflects on her professional journey in the chronic condition space(11:11) Common underlying chronic conditions affecting menopause(16:08) Discussion of the silent underlying conditions that can manifest later in life(25:43) Calming the nervous system to heal in a consistent way(30:50) The importance of your metabolic health in the form of nutrient-dense food, strength training, walking, hydration and circadian rhythm(32:09) Discussion of heart rate variability, recovery, and developing the art of sitting quietly(41:36) The importance of working with a health coach to plan for the future of your healthKEY TAKEAWAYS:Menopause and perimenopause symptoms can be overwhelming on their own. Still, when layered on top of chronic conditions like endometriosis, pelvic pain, autoimmune disorders, or post-viral syndromes (e.g., long COVID), it creates a compounded health challenge. Traditional training often overlooks the role of nutrition, nervous system regulation, and lifestyle in healing. Chronic conditions—especially during perimenopause—require a personalized, holistic strategy.Healing during menopause doesn't require drastic changes—small, consistent steps matter most. Start where it feels easiest, like mindfulness, nutrition, or gentle movement. Recovery and nervous system regulation are just as important as action. Tools like heart rate variability (HRV) can help track progress, showing that true resilience comes from balancing effort with rest.Integrating the nervous, immune, and hormone systems is the key to living a longer, more active, healthier life. When these systems are balanced and working together, they support overall well-being and longevity.QUOTES: (10:04) “In my traditional physical therapy training, nutrition was not emphasized as a healing tool. It was more like you needed adequate nutrients to perform certain physical activities, but we didn't think about it from an anti-inflammatory standpoint.” - Dr. Jessica Drummond(13:59) “Research shows us that acute illnesses like infections trigger chronic diseases.” - Dr. Jessica Drummond(22:36) “It's exposing these underlying things that have been lying dormant, that we just brushed aside or pushed through because they weren't really standing in the way of us doing the things that we wanted to do.” - Jenn Trepeck(40:19) “I think we make these plans expecting perfection, planning for this optimal, ideal day that never happens. So put these things in place so they happen even on the days where we don't feel a hundred percent, even on the days where nothing goes as planned.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramUse Your Heart Rate Monitor to Improve Your Health GUEST RESOURCES:The Integrative Women's Health InstituteIntegrative Women's Health - Podcast Integrative Women's Health - PubMedInnovative Approaches to Chronic Pain with The Anodunos Method TeamGUEST BIOGRAPHY:Dr. Jessica Drummond, DCN, CNS, PT, NBC-HWC, is a leading expert in women's health and the Founder and CEO of The Integrative Women's Health Institute. Pain is not merely a nuisance to be silenced—it's your body's sophisticated alarm system calling for attention. In this illuminating conversation with Dr. Scott J. Vrzal, we uncover how the location of your headaches serves as a roadmap to understanding deeper health imbalances throughout your body.Dr. Vrzal, a chiropractor specializing in applied kinesiology, shares his groundbreaking approach to decoding seven distinct headache patterns and their connections to specific organ systems. Did you know that a right-sided headache typically indicates gallbladder dysfunction, while temple pain often relates to hormonal imbalances? These connections, featured in his new book "The Headache Advantage," offer powerful insights for anyone seeking relief beyond medication. Our discussion ventures into surprising territory, revealing how TMJ issues often originate not in the jaw itself but from pelvic misalignment caused by chronic adrenal stress. We explore the counterintuitive truth that most acid reflux stems from too little stomach acid rather than too much, and how wheat consumption—particularly due to glyphosate contamination—compromises gallbladder function and triggers widespread inflammation.Perhaps most valuable is Dr. Vrzal practical wisdom about using proteolytic enzymes as powerful natural anti-inflammatories that can dramatically accelerate healing after dental procedures or surgery. This approach not only addresses pain but supports your body's inherent healing mechanisms without blocking crucial liver pathways needed for recovery.Whether you're dealing with persistent headaches, unexplained pain, or simply want to understand your body's signals more clearly, this episode offers a transformative perspective on health. As Dr. Vrzal reminds us, "Pain is intended to elicit change." By learning the language your body speaks, you gain the advantage of addressing root causes rather than merely silencing symptoms. Hey girl! You are making the time to workout and strength train, but are you prioritizing the right exercises? It can be so overwhelming to try to create the right workout or fitness plan and our time is limited so we want to make sure we are getting the biggest bang for our buck! Whether it's during pregnancy, postpartum or beyond, glute exercises are crucial for pelvic floor and whole body health! Did you know that your foot, knee or hip pain can, and probably is, being caused by glute weakness or an imbalance in the pelvic muscles?! Even painful sex can be because there is dysfunction in the glutes and pelvic muscles. As our bodies adapt and shift during pregnancy, postpartum or beyond, it is important to make sure we keep our glutes active and strong to help keep pain and pee-leaks away. However, there are so many leg and glute exercises that it can be overwhelming to try to know which ones to prioritize as busy but active moms! Inside today's episode I am going to break down the four main exercises or functional movements that I think are crucial to maintaining balanced strength and stability around the pelvis, as a pelvic health physical therapist. Remember mommas, you do not have to be an experienced lifter to do these exercises. May of these you are already doing on a functional level, so it is more about learning the movement patterns and doing them at body weight or whatever weight feels good for your core and your body and showing up for it consistently! If you have any injuries or painful symptoms, make sure to reach out so we can get you booked for a Coaching Session or in person Therapy session for a more individualized plan and one-on-one instructions so you can feel confident as you start strength training and grow that booty!! Today on the Holistic Dentistry Show, Dr. Sanda continues her exploration of jaw bone cavitations and discusses how they form and why they are so difficult to diagnose. Jawbone cavitations can significantly impact overall health, especially for those with chronic pain. Dr. Sanda breaks down the science of what exactly a jawbone cavitation is and how it can lead to osteonecrosis and inflammation. Studies show that jawbone cavitations are linked to elevated cytokine levels, which is why they are linked to systemic health issues. Dr. Sanda identifies lifestyle choices and related health issues that may increase the risk of developing a jaw cavitation, including root canals. Jaw cavitations can be difficult to diagnose, and Dr. Sanda emphasizes receiving proper diagnosis and treatment. Call our office at (310) 275-4180 to find out more about cavitations! Today on the Holistic Dentistry Show, Dr. Sanda discusses jaw bone cavitations, emphasizing their misunderstood nature and the updated understanding by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). Jawbone cavitations are areas of dead or dying bone tissue in the jaw, often caused by tooth removal, root canals, or infections. In Dr. Sanda's experience, after a jawbone cavitation surgery on patients with chronic fatigue and inflammation, they often experience relief across symptoms. She explains that the IAOMT has proposed a new name for this condition and reviews the condition's history of different naming conventions. Dr. Sanda then describes how cavitations are diagnosed, why they are often missed, and what technology is needed to detect them. For those suffering from unexplained chronic health issues, investigating if jawbone cavitation is a factor may be a good next step. THE BALANCED MOMTALITY- Pelvic Floor/Core Rehab For The Pregnant and Postpartum Mom
Hey Momma! Are you wondering where your butt went?! OR maybe you feel like you have never been able to grow a booty because of your genetics. Are you doing alot of glute exercises and not seeing much change? This can be so frustrating, especially when you are taking the time to prioritize your self care and getting exercises in. I see this so often during pregnancy but also postpartum, when our posture pulls our pelvis into an alignment where our glutes turn off. Whether you have an aesthetic goal for a big booty Judy or you just want to make sure you have strong glutes that can help you run, jump, hold your baby and more! OR maybe you're like me and you want both! I have some great tips inside for you! Strong glutes are crucial not only for a functioning pelvic floor, but also to be able to stay comfortable and active during pregnancy and to make sure you avoid many common pregnancy pains like low back pain or SIJ pain and sciatica. However, during pregnancy, the growing belly stretches out and pulls your pelvis into an anterior pelvic tilt, which stretches the glutes out and makes it difficult for them to engage. Same thing happens to the abs obviously since they are getting stretched out. Which is why it's even more crucial to make sure that you are keeping them engaged and strong throughout pregnancy and your lifetime. As your glutes help support you with your posture, bending over and picking things up, and taking the load off of your back. And I know many of you also might just want your butt to look good in your genes and that's ok! So inside today's episode I am giving you my favorite 3 tips (maybe some bonus tips) you can do at home or the gym, to help turn those glutes on and improve your glute recruitment and ability to engage and function for you! Not only during your leg and glute day at the gym, but also functionally when you are picking things up off the floor all day long! So stay tuned and make sure you listen to the whole episode as I have packed a lot in there for you! As always, if you are experiencing any pelvic floor/women's health issue like urinary incontinence/leaking, pelvic pain, pain with sex, urgency, heaviness/prolapse or any other back/hip/joint pain let's get you booked for a virtual coaching session or in person physical therapy session for a more individualized plan and one-on-one instructions so you can feel confident in your body and start healing today!! I didn't realise that the way our feet move; the space we give the toes to splay, the importance of stimulation by varied surfaces, the level of movement in and the alignment of our big toes and more, can hugely affect the way our entire body moves…until I became injured and was searching for anything that might help me get out of pain. However, I was aware that when I wore narrow or heeled shoes, I was in pain both during wearing them and afterwards, and as so many other people felt the same, I just accepted it as ‘normal'! Looking back I'm amazed I did. It's a bit like wearing clothes that are so tight you struggle to breathe and move and yet, you just do it (I could go on about that too, but that's for another episode)! Since being a barefoot convert about 7 years ago, knowing how much better my feet feel and how much these natural shoes helped decrease my pain and help my movement, I've been following some great accounts on Instagram. One of these was forward thinking @anybryant_podiatrist, so I was thrilled when he agreed to give me some time, all the way from Melbourne, Australia. In this hugely informative conversation we talk about Andy's story with foot problems, training in podiatry at University and how his journey with foot health and the way he views treatment for the feet has changed since those early days. Packed with lots of practical tips, you will be sure to view your own foot function differently by the end of this episode. It's also a must listen if you're suffering with foot pain, including problems like bunions and plantar fasciitis, as Andy offers alternative approaches to standard treatment and prevention. Andy also highlights the significance of foot strength and exercises in maintaining foot health and recommends resources for finding barefoot shoes and practitioners who promote natural foot function. Dr. Rachel Carver is joined by Dr. Catherine Murphy, DDS whose shift from traditional orthodontist to holistic health advocate has reshaped the way we think about dental care. In this episode, Dr. Murphy peels back the curtain on the patient-centered approach that harmonizes oral health with overall well-being. We promise you'll walk away with a new perspective on how early infant care, focusing on muscle development and addressing tethered oral tissues, can significantly influence lifelong health.Delving deeper, we share enlightening discussions on the implications of genetics and nutrition in prenatal care, stressing the crucial differences between folic acid and folate, and their roles in epigenetics. I recount a touching success story of treating my niece's baby for lip and tongue tie, highlighting the immediate benefits and long-term potential of craniofacial therapy. We also tackle the often-overlooked issue of sleep-disordered breathing in pregnant women and illustrate the profound impact of myofunctional therapy on children's oral and mental health, with nods to experts like Dr. Lauren Ballinger and her work on airway-focused dental practices. Our conversation concludes with an insightful look into the connection between diet, dental health, and inflammation, urging listeners to sift through the noise and hone in on practices that truly foster holistic health. Dr. Murphy and I emphasize the commitment required from both healthcare providers and patients to navigate the wealth of information and make empowered decisions for better health outcomes. Join us as we leave you better informed and inspired to take control of your health journey, reminding you that the foundation of wellness starts with understanding and applying the principles of holistic orthodontic care.Want to learn more about Dr. Murphy by visiting her website here: https://drcatherinemurphy.com/Social Media: https://www.instagram.com/drcatherinemurphy/https://www.tiktok.com/@drcatherinemurphyhttps://www.youtube.com/@drcatherinemurphyTo learn more about holistic dentistry, check out Dr. Carver's website:http://carverfamilydentistry.comTo contact Dr. Carver directly, email her at drcarver@carverfamilydentistry.com. For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/Shannon-Leggett Highlights from today's episode include: Shannon Leggett if I was able to help them treat their chronic stress, help them implement some lifestyle changes, and I would be better at it. Their pain would be better, I would be more effective and an efficient clinician Manon Bolliger 08:14 Yeah, yeah. And it just comes, you know, to show to how our own self care is essential to really allow our full creativity, like when we're in the profession of helping others, you know, we don't always think creativity matters, but it does Shannon Leggett And to think about right, like lifestyle management, making changes in you know, diet, sleep, all of that. It's so much cheaper. ABOUT SHANNON LEGGETT: Shannon Leggett, PT, MPT, YT-200 is a licensed Physical Therapist, certified Yoga Instructor, and owner of Shannon Leggett Physical Therapy, PLLC. Most of Shannon's 20+ year career has been in NYC, helping thousands of corporate executives and high-level athletes recover from injury. Core purpose/passion: I am on a mission to help people live well. The amount of chronic disease in the U.S. is staggering. The sad part is that most of this is avoidable. While there are medications to help, I believe there is a cheaper and more empowering way to go. Lifestyle management is key here. However, people know more about their computers or the stock market then how to care for their bodies. I want to empower people to change their habits to by providing them with education. Also, I am extremely passionate about normalizing mental health as health care. I faced so much stigma when I was first diagnosed-even from my own medical providers. It made an awful time in my life harder. I made a promise to myself that I would always be honest about my journey and help those struggling so no one should ever have to feel like I was made to feel!. About Lisa Dahl: Lisa Dahl is a Certified Health and Well-Being Coach specializing in Intuitive Eating, Mindful Eating, and Body Image. In addition, she is also host of the TV show and Podcast, Getting Healthy Without Rules. Her hallmark emphasis on mindfulness and self-compassion helps women find a successful pathway to whole-body wellness. She supports her clients as they discover "Body Peace & Food Freedom" on their journey to break free from dieting and diet culture. Her clients achieve a higher level of well-being as Lisa guides them through visioning, goal setting, and accountability. What We Discuss In This Episode: Become the expert on your own needs and desires instead of following external diet rules. Signs of being negatively affected by diet culture. Body checking and comparing yourself to others. Praising before/after weight loss pictures. Most people regain weight, so "after" pictures are often future "before" pictures. Envying those who restrict food better. Ways to challenge diet culture's influence. Become aware of actions, behaviors, and thoughts. Awareness helps regain power. Create believable new thoughts to replace negative self-talk. Use phrases like "I am learning to appreciate" instead of "I accept" if not yet true. Focus on how activities make you feel good, not how many calories they burn. Body image and age Many regret not improving body image and intuitive eating earlier. It's never too late to start. Health is most important, not weight. Weighing yourself Lisa doesn't weigh clients and suggests throwing the scale out the window. Weighing can be triggering, even for a coach. Think about only allowing measuring weight for true medical need. You can decline weighing at doctor for non-critical reasons. Focus on measuring happiness, anxiety reduction, etc. rather than weight. Intuitive eating tips Ask: "What am I feeling?" and "What do I need?" Name emotions beyond "stressed" or "overwhelmed" using emotion app. Food is the messenger, not the enemy. Meet needs in other ways too. There is no one size fits all health option and uncovering what the best health and lifestyle habits are for you can be confusing. Dr. Crippen is here to break down different ways to view your health and how to uncover your individual fountain of youth. In today's episode, Jenn is joined by Dr. Jeff Crippen, a chiropractor, nutritionist and coach who enjoys helping others unlock their true potential. After suffering from migraines for years in his youth, he put his passion into helping others the same way he helped himself. Dr. Crippen discusses what he discovered when doing research to uncover the Fountain of Youth. He talks about how to achieve your body's natural state of health, and what things can impact your individual health. They discuss energy within the body and how the energy surrounding you is affecting your brain and health. Tune in to learn the fascinating ways our body's work that aren't typically discussed. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: ● [5:11] Dr. Crippen talks about his struggle of having constant migraines throughout his youth.● [6:47] How did Dr. Crippen's experiences lead him to become a doctor of chiropractic, a nutritionist and a coach? ● [13:06] While Dr. Crippen was looking for the Fountain of Youth, what did he discover? ● [17:16] If the body's natural state is health, what are a couple of the mechanisms that can be used to return to our natural state? ● [20:50] What does Dr. Crippen mean by nothing or no thing? What's the best way to apply a practice into your life?● [29:47] Dr. Crippen defines the Yellowstone Principle. ● [37:11] Dr. Crippen discusses what the Model A Principle is.● [44:01] How can someone identify their personal best step in 2024?● [47:52] Dr. Crippen gives an example of how he starts working with clients. KEY TAKEAWAYS: ● [25:53] Stress is an endemic part of life, but you have the power to change your physiology by changing your response to it, and not getting stuck in your stress. Every morning when you wake up, ask yourself what kind of mood you are in. This practice of simply naming your mood can benefit your automatic stress response throughout the day. ● [36:07] Every effect has a cause, therefore if something changed in your health, there was a cause. Maybe it was a diet change, moving, the loss of a job, etc. If you can look at health more holistically, there is a better chance to find the exact cause, which means you will be able to fix the cause, and efficiently and effectively address the change in your health.● [39:24] Individual nutrient requirements can vary up to 75-100x person to person. There is no one size fits all diet or health regime. That's why it's so vital to learn how your body operates best.QUOTES: “We're not one size fits all machines, so just because one piece of advice worked for their brother's sister's cousin doesn't necessarily mean it's right for you.” - Dr. Jeff Crippen“It's real simple and real basic, but you can either focus on making someone less sick or you can focus on making them healthier. If you make them healthier, by definition, they're becoming less sick. So instead of working towards treating the disease or the symptoms, you work on creating more health. As you do that, the proof is in the pudding, which is the disease or the signs of disease or symptoms go away.” - Dr. Jeff Crippen“So the more effective the placebo is, the higher the barrier, the higher the hurdle the drug has to clear. If we look at the fact that 30 to 70 percent of people can get better based on good communication, based on understanding, based on empathy, based on prayer, based on meditation, based on having a clear intention of what you want for your health, then instead of minimizing that, that could be something incredible to open up.” - Dr. Jeff Crippen“When there's so much individual uniqueness between us, when we start making decisions, assuming people are one size fits all, when they're actually not, we create a system that's causing more harm than benefit, and that's where we are now.” - Dr. Jeff Crippen “All healing begins with you.” - Dr. Jeff Crippen"'Health is the body's natural state.'” - Jenn Trepeck"Optimists live 7-15 years longer than pessimists." - Dr. Jeff CrippenRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCESCrippen Wellness WebsiteTimeless You(th) BookJeff Crippen's InstagramGUEST BIO:Dr. Jeff Crippen's mission is to live life to the fullest and help others do the same.
