The book of Ruth is often read like a love story but Ruth is no rom-com. It is a story of real suffering and genuine courage as characters experience famine, death, and poverty. In this short Old Testament book we read the story of real people who are trying to trust God in their everyday. It isn't easy. It isn't pretty. It isn't a rom-com with a meet-cute, but a story of hard fought faithfulness and hope.

Greetings, Beloved.Today we remind God of his words found in Psalm 70 that asks Him not to tarry in delivering and helping us.Prayer:"Make haste, O God, to deliver me; make haste to help me, O Lord....Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee....make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer; O Lord, make no tarrying."- Psalm 70.Merciful Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, we are humbly praying your Holy Words back to you knowing that they will not come back void but shall accomplish that which you please and prosper in the thing whereto you have sent it- Isaiah 55:11.God Almighty, you know all of our individual concerns, challenges, ideas, and thoughts; please still our thoughts, body, and mind and help us to focus on you: receiving peace, wisdom, understanding, and all of the blessings that come with keeping our mind stayed on you.Abba Father, we ask YOU for breakthroughs, fresh, new seasons of your prosperity and promises, Your fresh wind, special miracles, heart's desires, and answered prayers; they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing: we shall not want- Psalm 34:9-10.We serve you, alone.We repent of our sin. Family is where life begins, and love never ends. We came into this world with the gift of family, which gives us particular joy and belongingness. Within this nurturing environment, we learn the meaning of love, develop our identities, and cultivate the values that shaped who we are today. It has been said that the memories we make with our family are everything. However, many of us in the past years have encountered challenges that hinder our ability to connect and come together. Heather Thomas continues our series this week looking at Psalm 60, another community lament Psalm. The Psalm reveals a people holding onto both fear and faith in the midst of uncertainty and pain. We can relate to this in our own lives as situations we find ourselves in often have more questions in them than they have certainty or resolution. As we read the Psalm of lament we realize that we are not asked to be dismissive nor defeatist in the midst of our circumstances. Lament means we don’t have to avoid, or silence pain or confusion or uncertainty. But lament is also not about being cynical or defiant, critical nor cruel or bitter. Lament is an honest and truthful expression of sorrow, grief, fear and pain. It is an honest protest that not all is right. Lament language isn’t language that lacks faith and trust. In fact, we actually need faith and trust to use this kind of language. It requires faith because it requires a true understanding of who we are: a people who will never be separated from the love of God in Christ (Romans 8). It requires faith because is requires a trust in who God is and that he is capable and willing to relate to us at the deepest level. Rather than fearing that our faith is weak, or under false guilt that our rawness might somehow be wrong, or hiding in the shame that what we are going through is unseeable, lament gives us permission to come to him insistent that his presence be known. Psalm 60 ends with an air of uncertainty with eyes on God. That is what is so uncomfortable about the lament Psalms since we so naturally strive to solve and fix things. Here, in the space of lament, we sit in hard places. We show before God, which takes courage and faith in our uncertain circumstances trusting his presence with us.

Jonny Morrison begins a new series for the season of Lent, walking through the Psalms of Lament, entitled "Holy Words." This is going to be an interesting work for us because the American Church is not all that good at Lament. We don’t have tools to lead us into unknown and hard places. Instead of practicing Lament we tend towards: • Easy answers – trite, cliché, or superficial explanations for our experiences. • Quick Fixes – what we often call coping mechanism. Ways to deal and manage but not heal. • Ignore – which is how we tend to approach pain in other people’s lives. We don’t want to make it worse, so we ignore it all together. We do all three of these things with good intention, but untended pain doesn’t heal. That is why we need the practice of Lament instead of shortcutting around the difficult space, Lament helps us enter in. On Sunday we named 5 ways Lament is a better way of first dealing with the hard parts of life: • Lament names pain that our quick fixes tends to hide. • Lament gives voice to people who suffer the most • Lament joins the body together in solidarity. • Lament reveals to the world a different way of engaging. • Lament leads us into the deep places of our faith where we are challenged to trust. Lament is a practice of trust: will we trust God in the unknown? Will we trust God even when we feel abandoned by him? This is the same question being asked of Jesus during the season of Lent. Will Jesus trust all the way to and through the cross, where he, like Israel in Psalm 44, will ask, “Why have you abandoned me?” The good news of Lent is that Jesus choose to trust, and because He does, our Lament always gets to be different.

Followers of Christ are called to live faithful lives, even in their speech. What do our words and attitudes reveal about our beliefs, and how can we pursue holiness through what we say and how we say it? Scriptures: Matthew 17:1-9 and 2 Timothy 2:14-19. Sermon from 3/3/2019.
