Today, Ben and I are chatting with Allie Severino, host of the “Dope Sick Nation”, which premiered on VICE in 2019. Allie’s goal is to help educate and heal America with her series offering a unique, inside perspective on the addiction problems facing our country in addition to the addiction treatment industry. Allie is passionate about educating families on the advancement of addiction treatment, harm reduction, and holistic approaches. She believes in education to aid prevention and advance the recovery of people with substance abuse. Allie’s goal is to help families and loved ones affected by addiction. Allie’s Addiction History After getting arrested at 17 for drug use and receiving probation, Allie admitted herself into recovery. She earned her GED and started working full-time, obtaining her real estate license in the process. Allie wasn’t enjoying real estate as she had hoped, so she started her own Fresh Start magazine. She wrote and published under a fictitious name, not wanting anyone to know who published this magazine. Pitching “Dope Sick Nation” To get “Dope Sick Nation” picked up by a production company, Allie and her friends had to go in and pitch it more than once. The first time, they hated it; the second time, they loved the idea. She talks about how several of her friends died during the filming of the series. “There was a lot of emotional stuff going on while we were filming.” While there were definitely positive memories, such as Shane, who is still in recovery doing well, much of it was very intense. Alex’s Story of Addiction, Relapses and Recovery Starting treatment in Florida last year, he heard of “Dope Sick Nation” being filmed. In 2020, he had relapsed very severely and was drinking heavily daily. Since he was looking for treatment in Florida, he decided to reach out to Allie to be in the series. Listen in and find out what you can expect from watching “Dope Sick Nation”, and how Alex decided to stay in recovery instead of going home to Arizona. Many of us are battling with this situation: We invest precious time in creating and advertising our freebie, only to end up having an email list full of freebie hunters instead of future buyers. But if not a freebie, what else will attract the right people to our email list? Allie Bjerk has figured it out. Feeling miserable about her corporate job after her son was born, she came up with an escape plan: Become an entrepreneur and help her own clients manage social media. At first she was amazed at how easy it was. Her client rooster was full, and she constantly updated her knowledge on Facebook ads and sales funnels to offer the best service she could. But her workload was unpredictable. She was living client to client, and when a payment didn't come through, she found herself with her back against the wall: She either had to launch her own product, or close her business. She didn't have the email list size or the audience to sell a high ticket offer, so she came up with a new strategy and created a tiny offer instead, hoping to gain visibility and grow her business. Over the course of the next eight months, she made $300K. In this episode, Allie shares the strategy behind the tiny offer, how you can gain visibility by applying it and what you need to consider when putting your own tiny offer out there. If you're tired of putting freebies out there that attract the wrong audience, this is just what you need. “People are starting to lead with a tiny product instead of a freebie because it attracts a different audience who's ready to actually do the work.” - Allie Bjerk Are you more of a reader? Scroll down to read about how you can create your own tiny offer! In this Episode of The Sigrun Show: How Allie's priority shifted rapidly when her son was born (2:57) What led Allie to come up with her tiny offer idea (6:25) How long it took Allie to create her first tiny offer (10:27) The profit Allie makes with her tiny offers (12:25) Figuring out the pain points of your clients and creating multiple offers (13:40) How Allie ended up creating a coaching program (16:39) Allie's vision (19:08) How you can create your own tiny offer (20:45) The system Allie uses (24:11) How the tiny offer trend will develop (27:15) Want to learn about other strategies besides the tiny offer that help build your list? Find out how Jadah Sellner attracted 1M Email subscribers with a 30 day challenge. How to Create Your Tiny Offer Even though Allie is making profit with her tiny offer, it's really about attracting the right clients and building your email list. Much like with a freebie, people get a taste of your teaching style, but by paying a small price for it, the offer becomes more intimate and you attract people who are invested and actually want to do the work, instead of freebie-hunters who will never turn into buyers. Here's what you need to think about when putting your tiny offer out there: Define your ultimate goal If you could have any dream business, what would it be? Is it a coaching program, a course? Clarity on your end goal is key in understanding what your tiny offer needs to be about. Understand who to target Work your way backwards to understand which people you need to attract to create the business you want. What are their pain points? How does their journey look like if they're starting at point A and what do they need to get to point C (which is the ultimate result you provide)? Identify their pain point Identify the one thing these people are struggling with. How can you solve their problem? Build a product around it that provides a quick fix. Once you've solved their problem and they've gone with you through this journey, connect with them on an emotional level. Help them see what your upsell can do for them after they've purchased the initial tiny offer. Do you think tiny offers are a good alternative to freebies? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Ever wondered what it’s like to run a farm in extreme climates? Hailing from Alaska, Allie Barker of Chugach Farm joins us for today’s episode. Chugach Farm’s mission is to support biological and soil health by nurturing plants and animals to provide an abundance of nutrient-dense food, empower the community to re-connect to local food systems, enable personal health and wellness through herbal medicine, food as medicine and energy-efficiency, adopt food storage methods that maintain years of food without consuming fossil fuel, and to develop energy-efficient farming methods and tool hacks as a model for others to live luxuriously with less. As lofty a mission as this is, Allie tackles them head on with gusto! Growing up as part of a passionate outdoorsy family, responsibility and discipline came early in life and has continuously developed ever since...and it certainly shows on the farm! Tune in to find out all about Chugach Farm’s complex operations and how they stay thriving in their atypical climate! These formative years were not easy to wash off and helped to nurture her intuitive passion for self-sufficiency. Growing up as part of a passionate outdoorsy family, responsibility and discipline came at an early age. Her commitment to athletic pursuits, combined with an incredibly positive father as a role model, gave her the determination and courage to follow her dreams. At 18 years of age, Allie migrated to Alaska to attempt a winter ascent of Mt. Marcus Baker. She found more than mountains to climb. In addition to endless epic mountains she saw the potential to build a homestead, grow food, and live off-grid. Knowing she would soon return to Alaska permanently, Allie finished up her Bachelor of Arts Degree majored in sustainable agriculture, herbal medicine, alternative energy and sustainable architecture at Evergreen State College. Most of Allie’s adult life has been spent in the outdoors as a mountain guide, avalanche forecaster, and homesteader. She naturally settled in the quiet town of Chickaloon nested between the beautiful Talkeetna and Chugach Mountains, nurtured by the rapids of the Matanuska and Chickaloon Rivers, located at the end of a beaten path deep in the heart of the Matanuska Valley, Alaska. After meeting her husband on a 40-day mountaineering trip on the Nelchina and Matanuska Glaciers, she convinced him to stay and be part of the adventure. Since purchasing land in Alaska in 2002, Allie and Jed have put their hearts, souls, blood and a few tears into creating a small scale, off-grid homestead and farm. In 2010, with Jed’s encouragement, Allie began to lead the charge in farming after deciding to produce on a different scale and committing to farming, nutrition, making ferments, and putting up food “full time.” Having been diagnosed with celiac disease in her mid-20’s, Allie was motivated to commit to a 100% local and nutrient dense diet of wild game, farm raised meat, good local fat, ferments, root veggies, raw goat milk, and eggs. She is proud of not having to rely on the grocery store for over 14 years and feels better than ever, never looking back. Allie melds her education, strong work ethic, love for the soil, and passion for herbal medicine and a nutrient-dense diet, into a full-time farm-life obsession. Chugach Farm has been in full operation since 2010, selling their goods at farmer’s markets, restaurants, on and off CSAs, CSF, local customers, and now direct marketing through the NEW Chugach Farm online store. "Expectations obviously are higher now. But I put them on myself." —Allie Kieffer When Allie Kieffer was on Episode 46 of the Ali on the Run Show last November, she was fresh off a fifth-place finish at the 2017 TCS New York City Marathon. Her 2:29 finish was triumphant: She was this unknown, unsponsored runner from Buffalo, NY, who happened to be the first American woman to finish behind winner Shalane Flanagan. Now, Allie is no longer unknown or unsponsored. She signed with Oiselle soon after NYC, trained in Kenya for seven weeks, and recently moved to Boulder, CO, where she's gearing up to return to the New York City Marathon. Allie Kieffer stormed back onto the running scene by coming in as the second US woman, and fifth overall, in the 2017 NY Marathon with a 15 minute personal best. She became a runner for Oiselle early this year and selected them because of the focus on women and community. Allie ran in college for Wake Forest, made the 2012 10k Olympic Trials but retired in 2013 after injury. Because of her love of running she self-coached her way back, which is amazing it its own right. Allie and I cover a wide range of subjects: how she focused on what effort she felt she could sustain in order to smash 15 minutes off her personal best to take everyone by surprise in that 2017 marathon, her advocacy for positive body image and setting a goal of good healthy living and balance in her life and what she is currently doing to heal a stress fracture in her foot. Allie and I cover whether you should strive for a race weight and what that could mean for your performance overall and your ability to give your body what it needs to perform at it. What you will learn about How Allie took 15 min off her PR in the 2017 NYC Marathon, finishing in 5th place and the second American woman How your race should be about the effort you can sustain, how you are feeling, and not any end result How weight training and having more muscle has made her a better runnerHow Allie ran a 2016 marathon on a 200 meter indoor track (211 laps) as the only woman and set a new world record To be healthy, eat mostly vegetables, whole foods, and don’t eat too much. Be sure to get regular exercise. Don’t have to say no to anything. If you are under-eating to get to a “race weight” it is likely not healthy for you. How would you know what an ideal race weight might be anyway? Some runners are being told they are too small, some too big. You have to figure out what your body needs and listen to it. How she came to be an advocate/spokesperson for positive body image and taking ownership of yourself and doing what is right and healthy for you How she is dealing with a stress fracture in the second metatarsal of her foot causing her to have to drop out of the NYC Half and London Marathon. How she has been using cross training on an elliptical (and ElliptiGO) and pool running to stay in condition. Inspirational Quotes: Don’t box yourself in by putting limits on what you think you are capable of. Set yourself up for success, not failure. If you can’t eat out at a restaurant or have anxiety about it, you are not being healthy.
