Robin met the goal and raised $3,500 that year. Since then, over the last 15 years, Run4Recovery has raised more than $310,000 for the Puente House Foundation scholarship fund. While the event originated as a running feat, the team transitioned to riding ElliptiGO elliptical bikes to prevent joint and muscle injury.  Robin has personaly run and ridden thousands of miles to draw attention to the cause.  This year, starting on September 26, Robin ran 502 miles on an EliptiGO over 5 days. “When you ride it, you feel good about yourself.” In 2005, former Marine and Ironman triathlete Bryan Pate lost his ability to run for exercise. After being disappointed by cycling and waiting in line at the gym for an elliptical trainer, he set out to create a low-impact outdoor running device that would give him the results he was getting with running. With incredible tenacity and hard work, he brought his dream to life and created the ElliptiGO bike. Now, his bikes are used by elite athletes, over 300 university athletic programs, celebrities, and fitness enthusiasts all over the world. There is an entire ElliptiGO community that rides together, shares their adventures, and meets for various competitive ElliptiGo events, such as the 5 Burroughs Ride that takes over the streets of New York City. “Within the family of ElliptiGO, there's people who fight cancer, people who lose 100 pounds, who get off medications, who feel like they can run again. The letters we get and the positive energy that accrues around this experience has been overwhelming, “said Bryan. In this episode, Bryan talks about what it took to create ElliptiGO, the challenges he faced along the way, lessons he learned about starting a new business, the lives that have been impacted by his bikes, and the ElliptiGo family he loves so much. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tomgirltv/support

A 500 mile journey visiting schools and promoting kindness on the way, through speaking, workshops and sunshine people events.    In 2020 Nahla took on her biggest challenge to date riding 5,000 miles on an ElliptiGO Bike across the UK while writing “KINDNESS” in massive Strava Art! This challenge would also see Nahla gain a World Record for the furthest distance travelled in a single journey on an Elliptical cycle.   Nahla has recently finished writing her 3rd book - “The Accidental Adventurer: just how far can kindness take you” - which will be released on November 1st    About the book: The Accidental Adventurer is not only a journey of adventures but a journey of life, with all its rawness, vulnerability and most of all connections. Nahla Summers never intended to become an adventurer but after a life event that changed who she was as a person she discovered that the adventures were helping her find herself not again, but for the first time. This book demonstrates the extraordinary power of the mind when everything else fails.    New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday and Thursday at 7am UK time - Make sure you hit the subscribe button so you don't miss out.    The Tough Girl Podcast is sponsorship and ad free thanks to the monthly financial support of patrons. Born and raised on a farm in the UK Squash Falconer is a record-breaking adventurer, speaker and presenter. Combining her love of different sports Squash was the first British woman to climb and paraglide from the summit of Mont Blanc having ridden there from the UK on her motorbike. Squash has climbed many mountains around the world, she has summited Mount Everest and holds claim to be the worlds highest ever bum boarder -a title she gained on Cho Oyu, the 6th highest mountain in the world. In 2013 Squash completed a 3000mile journey on an ElliptiGO setting a new distance record for travel by Elliptical bicycle. Squash has self-shot many of her trips and received accolade for the short films she's produced. In 2014 a project saw her ride thousands of miles through South America on her BMW GS 800 presenting an adventure travel documentary. Passionate about sharing her adventures, Squash has a unique and quirky outlook on life and firmly believes that with the right attitude every one of us can achieve our goals and dreams, or at least, something extraordinary. The discussion is about mountains and how she found herself in that milieu, but it's also about what the combination of her sports gives her. As with many of my “mountain guests” it's often not what you think. It's not about being an adrenaline seeking junkie, scaring yourself for kicks with near death experiences. It's about the freedom you feel, about the empowerment that comes with finding how what it feels like to push your limits and find new depths to yourself. We talk about the different approaches women and men take to adventure sometimes, about being comfortable in your own skin and how it is important not to just “do, do, do” all the time. We also discuss her becoming a mum, and how the challenge of being a single mum in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) for 6 weeks was the hardest challenge she has ever faced but how she organised herself like she was on expedition on Everest to keep herself well and healthy so she could look after her tiny little girl better. Believe in your crazy dreams, don't let anyone stop you from trying and brand fatigue after telling her story so many times are some other themes we touch on! www.squashfalconer.com Facebook : squashfalconer Twitter : @squashfalconer Instagram : squashfalconer

At that point, Kirsten had her own dream of racing with him in Hawaii.  Her only problem was that she needed to qualify.   Like her dad, she is a natural problem solver and went ahead and signed up for more than one Ironman race in an attempt to qualify. In October of 2015, Kirsten and Volker, along with most of their family including friends from home, traveled to Kailua-Kona to celebrate and support each other. I was fortunate enough to be there as well, and I sat down after the race to interview Kirsten and Volker.   I interviewed each of them separately about their experience attempting to make it to the race together. The interviews took place on the lanai of their rental house and you can hear in the background, the birds, the hum of conversation in the house, and an occasional truck. What makes this interview even more distinct is the fact that Volker passed away two years ago in an unexpected accident while riding his Elliptigo.  This interview captures a forever moment between a father and daughter bonded by their love for triathlon.  I’m so honored to have been part of their experience together.  I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I enjoyed recording it.

Lifelong athlete, Lou Panaccione is the CEO and co-founder of OOFOS, the revolutionary athletic recovery footwear brand with a simple mission: to help people feel better. From recovering aching feet to finding a cure for Breast Cancer, his goals and commitment to this mission are incredibly inspiring. As a high school and collegiate distance runner, empowered with decades of experience at Nike and Reebok during the running shoe boom of the '70s and '80’s, Lou knew that the market was full of athletic shoes designed to drive your workout. But, there was nothing out there for after your run or workout, when your muscles ache and you need to recover to get back out there tomorrow. It was at this moment that Lou and his friends (three co-founders at OOFOS, Paul Brown, Juan Diaz, Steve Liggett), recognized the need for footwear that could help fitness enthusiasts and athletes recover from repeated workouts on hard, man-made surfaces.  What was missing was a material that focused on absorbing impact to provide relief to the body and aid in stimulating the recovery process. This is when OOFOS began, in 2011, with a core line of sandals, and has evolved over the past 7 years to include sandals, clogs, and shoes! OOFOS has created an “OOfoam” impact-absorbing technology that aims to provide that recovery. OOfoam is a unique foam material never used in anything before that is solely developed to deliver maximum Impact Absorption to lessen the impact on the feet and body. Lou and OOFOS are also committed to finding a cure for breast cancer. The company’s brand leader and director of marketing, Duncan Finigan, was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer just a couple of years after OOFOS was started. The founders of OOFOS immediately decided to do whatever they could to make sure Duncan, and all breast cancer patients, could feel better by supporting the need for research dollars.  They developed a line of Project Pink shoes, in which $10 from each pair sold goes directly to breast cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.  Just this year, OOFOS. upped that commitment to finding a cure faster, and have committed to donate 3% of all sales on OOFOS.Com go directly to breast cancer research, and to date, OOFOS has prodly donated over $130K and counting to Dana -Farber Cancer Institute.  In addition, Lou and Duncan participate annually in the Pan -Mass Challenge to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer and Dana Farber as well, on their ElliptiGO’s. OOFOS is pioneering recovery footwear across the globe and there is no person who shouldn’t be wearing OOFOS, because everyone deserves to feel better and recover faster by Feeling the OO! They can be found in specialty retailers across the US and in 34 countries globally. Head over to www.oofos.com for additional information. What you will learn about How Allie took 15 min off her PR in the 2017 NYC Marathon, finishing in 5th place and the second American woman How your race should be about the effort you can sustain, how you are feeling, and not any end result How weight training and having more muscle has made her a better runnerHow Allie ran a 2016 marathon on a 200 meter indoor track (211 laps) as the only woman and set a new world record To be healthy, eat mostly vegetables, whole foods, and don’t eat too much.  Be sure to get regular exercise.  Don’t have to say no to anything.   If you are under-eating to get to a “race weight” it is likely not healthy for you.  How would you know what an ideal race weight might be anyway?  Some runners are being told they are too small, some too big.  You have to figure out what your body needs and listen to it. How she came to be an advocate/spokesperson for positive body image and taking ownership of yourself and doing what is right and healthy for you How she is dealing with a stress fracture in the second metatarsal of her foot causing her to have to drop out of the NYC Half and London Marathon. How she has been using cross training on an elliptical (and ElliptiGO) and pool running to stay in condition. Inspirational Quotes: Don’t box yourself in by putting limits on what you think you are capable of. Set yourself up for success, not failure. If you can’t eat out at a restaurant or have anxiety about it, you are not being healthy. I am thrilled to welcome Adidas-sponsored professional marathoner Neely Spence Gracey to the Ali on the Run Show! Neely lives in Boulder, CO, with her husband and their Vizsla, Strider. Neely was born to be a runner—literally. She was born on Marathon Monday while her dad was running the Boston Marathon. (He ran a 2:16:40 and finished in 19th place, and went on to make the 1992 Olympic team and become a world championship medalist.) On this episode, Neely talks about what it was like growing up in a running family—including the time she joined her grandma for a Turkey Trot and out-kicked her when the finish line came into view! She also shares what it was like being home-schooled for most of her life, and opens up about how running went from something she did because her parents did it to something she really discovered for herself. Neely made her marathon debut at the 2016 Boston Marathon, where she ran a 2:35:00 and finished ninth (and was the first female American finisher), and followed it up with a 2:34:55 finish at the 2016 New York City Marathon, where she finished eighth. (If you’re gearing up to run the NYC Marathon in a few weeks, get ready to take notes: Neely offers her best tips for tackling the tough course!) Neely also opens up about how both she and her husband have Lyme Disease, and she talks about the challenges they’ve both faced with the unpredictable disease. She shares how she deals with injuries as a professional runner and how she stays mentally strong at every point in her training, and dishes out her best advice for the everyday runner. Neely Spence-Gracey has been a friend of mine for almost 10 years, and I knew she would make a great guest on the show, as she is always very inspiring for runners of every level. If you don't believe me, just check out her HUGE fan base! Neely was born while her dad was running the Boston marathon (who was an Olympian by the way!), which means it was her destiny to end up as a runner. She has achieved a lot of running success over the years, including 8 national titles during college, and running some smoking fast times in distances from the mile up to the marathon, but she has also been through her fair share of struggles. A few years ago, Neely could not catch a break, she shares her story of three broken bones and Lymes disease all within a few years, but she persevered, and stayed positive during the eight months it took for her fitness to come back. For that, she was rewarded and ended up faster than ever. Neely shares the story of that time, as well as what she learned about injuries and seeking answers when the unknown is driving you crazy. Strength training has been a huge part of staying healthy since that time (now, you know I am a fan of that part), and you can make it part of your routine too. We talk about how Neely uses mantras during her training, and what she learned about reframing to believe that you can achieve what you set out to do. She is another run by feel girl (go effort scale!) and lets her body tell her what she is ready for that day. If you are currently injured and struggling to see how you will ever get back to where you were, this episode will motivate you to stay positive, find balance, and believe that you can, and will return, better than ever. Today's Guest Neely Spence-Gracey is a professional runner for Adidas who has represented the USA on two world teams, and has PRs of 15:27 in the 5k, 1:09 in the half marathon, and 2:34 in the marathon. You might think life is easy for elite runners, but Neely has been through a lot of setbacks, struggles, and moments of doubt that led her to this point. If you need inspiration that you can come back from injury, this is it. What You Will Learn About Why Neely chose to go to Shippensberg University and keep her dad as her coach. Why Neely gets strange looks when she is doing her pool workouts (and it's not from the workout!) How the ElliptiGO turned her life around and helped her qualify for a world team when she was injured by helping her get through a tough time. Neelys best advice for dealing with injuries How to use mantras to practice mental training during workouts to use in races, and how to come up with a mantra that is effective for you Why strength training is critical to maximizing recovery and staying healthy Why Neely did not race Boston marathon this year Neely's #R4RPowerPose Inspirational Quotes Running has been a part of my life, and I was destined for this career path. The struggles along the way have shaped and defined who I am. How we are going to be most successful is if we are happy and in a place we feel supported, we have a team we work well with, that there is a good group dynamic, and we have a coach we can really trust to guide us, that’s how we are going to be the best and maximize ourselves. Where you feel at home is where you are going to run the best. Running is a brutal sport. It is amazing when things are going great, but it is horrible when things aren’t going well, and it impacts every aspect of our lives. That is the hardest part about being injured, is that it is so isolating. You are already upset because you can't run and I am a social runner, so that was my social time...all these things that used to be such a positive part of my life are just taken from me. With each injury, I learned more about myself. The body will heal itself, but you have to give it the ability and opportunity to do it. We get faster by stressing the system in different ways, it is the same with strength training, you can't do the same thing over and over. At some point during a race, every single person is going to have that moment of decision, of where you have to keep pushing even though your body is saying stop. You are tired, you still have a long way to go, and you have to find a way to work through that and make it to the finish line. If you practice mantras in workouts, you can apply them to races and you will see success. If you live a life where you feel like you are lucky and things happen to you, they do, and its all because your outlook on life is not putting energy into the negative sides. We all have good days and we all have bad days, but if you are focusing on the positives, things are always going to look so much better. Focusing on what you can control is the key. Injuries are never ideal, but when something flares up, being smart from the get-go is key, because pushing through never results in a positive outcome. On episode 13 of the final surge podcast we talk to Mike Caldwell, the coach of the Asics Greenville Track Club Elite. One of the reasons we have seen a resurgence in American distance running over the last few years is the emergence of post-college Olympic developmental teams like GTC-Elite. We talk to Coach Caldwell about how he got started with the GTC and he discusses why he would rather some of his athletes did not wear a GPS watch during recovery runs. Now on to the show. How did you get your start in running? After college did you make your transition straight into coaching or what did you do post-collegiately? - He did some training with Frank Shorter and the Florida Track Club. How did you get your start coaching elite athletes after that? Currently, you catch the Asics Greenville Track Club GTC-Elite, how did that come about?  As a college coach at Furman what were you finding from the athletes coming in after their high school career. Did you find them mostly overtrained, undertrained or what? When you get collegiate runners who join your team what are you finding? Do you find they are overtrained, undertrained aerobically or anything like that? How about with college runners? A high school coaches job is developing runners, but a college coach really needs to be competitive at conference championships. So do you think we are seeing a lot of over training or over racing with college kids these days? We talk recovery days and how to make sure you are recovered and the importance. What are you doing for general strength for your athletes? You mentioned when a new athlete comes in you interview them like the recruiting process. What are you looking for as far as someone who would be a good fit for the team? I notice that one of your parnters/sponsors is Elliptigo. I am really interested in hearing how you are using that and how you and the athletes are liking it? I know that you started using Final Surge for your team a few months ago and wondering what benefits you are getting from it?  - He talks about it as a communication tool with his athletes. The fall racing season is coming up. What can we be watching for from your team?   Rapid Fire... 5 questions in under 1 minute Favorite running book? - Best Efforts, Once a Runner, Science of Running Current trainers you are wearing? Asics Gel-Nimbus Favorite race? - Peachtree Favorite recovery meal or recovery drink? - Chocolate Milk Your favorite piece of running equipment that is not your shoes? - Soleus Watch

How do you pursue your passion and still be realistic? How do you do something you love by making a major shift in your life (whether it be your career, relationships, habits, or so on)? This week, comedian Dan Nainan runs by to talk about this very topic; he also receives some sage running advice from Kari. Also, check out these TRLS episodes that we recommend: LS Episode 92: An M.D. Living The Running Lifestyle (with Charlie Barkowski of Running with Miles) Featured Guest and (Future) Runner of the Week: Dan Nainan Comedian and world traveler Dan Nainan stops by to get some running advice from Kari and to talk about his future running journey. Pleate note: Always consult your physician. The following interview is not intended to replace the advice of your physician or medical care provider. Dan wants to take up running and was interested in a recent New York Times article titled, “Meet the Ultra-Fat, Super-Cushioned Running Shoe.” Kari recommends going into a local running store (like Paragon Sports near Dan in New York City). Kari says that the latest research shows to do what comfortable is for you in terms of sneakers. Kari asks Dan to talk about his The Mistake Podcast appearance with Peter Shankman and Peter Keller in Episode 25: “Corporate to Comedy—Finding Time to Pursue Your Passion with Dan Nainan.” Kari asks Dan about changing careers and stereotypes. Back in December 2015, he was working out with a personal trainer for the first time doing a lot of cardio, and he passed out in the locker room. A day later he had brain surgery for an epidural hematoma (which can be fatal). Dan talks about his recovery, which included physical therapy and occupational therapy. He has always been healthy, eats right, and doesn't drink or smoke. Kari asks what Dan's fitness routine looks like now and where he's looking to take it. He tries to get in 10–12 thousand steps per day now, and uses his FitBit. Kari recommends the FitBit Surge. She recommends getting the Jeff Galloway introduction 5K program. Kari also recommends looking up the New York Road Runners for some introduction programs and to meet fellow runners. She mentions using an ElliptiGO in Central Park. Kari talks about HIIT workouts, which some research shows is healthier for you than running for longer times. Dan feels that it's never too late to change your career, your health, or whatever you decide to change. Serena Marie, RD Serena Marie, RD, answers a listener's question about salt and hydration. She's OK with those who do not have a diagnosis of high blood pressure using salt in their diets BUT only if they choose the majority of their foods from clean, unprocessed food sources. It's OK to have frozen fruits and vegetables in your diet, but steer clear of convenience boxed foods or frozen dinners that contain too much sodium. Since we sweat so much, especially in the summer, it's OK to replace the salt that you lose. Serena recommends using a pink Himalayan sea salt. Aside from Himalayan sea salt, Serena recommends Celtic salt. Serena shares her thoughts on drinks like Powerade and Gatorade. She recommends a drink such as Tailwind For five years, Philadelphia's Mayor Nutter tried to get a sugar tax put on drinks; however, the current mayor, Jim Kenney, just got this tax approved. Drinks will be taxed 1.5 cents per ounce. Check out the Philly.com article here. Gratitude Jar (Woot! Woot!) Kari is grateful that Philadelphia passed the “soda tax.” She is very grateful for Mayor Nutter who gave her a huge bear hug when she crossed the Philadelphia Marathon finish line. On this week's episode, Kari interviews Jeff Zidell, Senior Vice President at Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, father of two teenage daughters, and Chicago lover (the city, not the play!). He chats with Kari about the Chicago Area Runners Association, what he thinks about pace groups, and about his BQ experience. Also, find out why Serena is happy about being injured and why Kari and Serena are so excited to try Sparkle Skirts. Runner of the Week, who happens to be the one and only Jeff Zidell, stops by again to discuss his second marathon in four weeks' time and how running with a different pace group affected his race experience. Jeff Zidell — Part I Zidell explains how he first became a runner in 2002, his approach at the beginning of his foray into running, and how that coincided with working for American Airlines during and after the tragedy of 9/11. He talks about why he ran his first half marathon at the age of 42 and his first full three years later. He also chats with Kari about why he runs consistently with his running group three times a week. Zidell recounts his experience as a group leader for an 8:30-pace, long-run group through the Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA), which raises money for underprivileged children. He explains his participation in a twenty-week program where he was a pace leader. With CARA, two runners in the pace group for which he was group leader got their BQs and will run Boston 2016! He shares why he savored qualifying for Boston by himself and then with his family. The video about the Runner who did not tell anyone she was running a marathon. Runner of the Week: Jeff Zidell — Part II This week's Runner of the Week is Jeff Zidell, who is a six-time marathoner, excellent pacer, and BQer extraordinaire. Zidell tells Kari his story of how fortunate he feels about how he found and embraced running. He gives Kari some insight into how to be a consistent and focused runner. He chats about the common bond that he feels between runners. Zidell recounts his second marathon in the span of just four weeks. He explains how his second marathon was colder (by fifteen degrees, which can make a huge difference) and hillier (talk about double trouble), and yet he still qualified for the Boston Marathon. He also explains why you can forget everything you've learned about running when you run with a pace group. Serena Marie, RD Learn why Serena is OK with currently being injured, because she likes changing up her workout routine. Check out Serena's new recommendation, Fitocracy, to see your weight-lifting progress. Serena chats about her carb-lovin' marathon training and how she's coping post-marathon now that she isn't incorporating as many cardio-based workouts into her lifestyle. Kari and Serena gush about Sparkle Skirts, especially because they come in sizes XS to 4XL, so they are made for all shapes and sizes. They both can't wait to let you in on their future product reviews. Serena and Kari mention ElliptiGO's latest product, the ElliptiGO Arc, and how it is more like a bicycle, which fits nicely with Serena's latest biking/elliptical cross-training habits. We talk about all the tricks the mind plays on a runner when taking on the marathon, for example. Let's just say I share many of the jitters that are common for marathoners. Eeek - three marathons!!!! What is going on????!!!!! All I know is that I have done the work, and the only thing I can control now is my mind, and how I decide to dress for the weather. Running is a celebration of humanity, and elite runner, Tera Moody, leads the way in showing us the magic of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Tera shares her inspiring stories in addition to what to look out for on the Chicago Marathon course and what sites to enjoy in the city.  She also tells us her favorite restaurants and the surprising good luck food she eats the day before a marathon.  Serena Marie, RD, and I discuss what research says when it comes to carb loading. It may very well surprise you.  We also give an update on our tapering for the Chicago Marathon, which is less than two weeks away. Tera Moody: Why Tera loves the Chicago Marathon Why she chose the sport of running Why she looks up to her brother What happened her first day of cross country practice (something A LOT of us can probably relate to) Why she went to the University of Colorado When and why she transitioned over to running marathons Why she fell in love with the marathon distance What were her delusional thoughts during the 2007 Chicago Marathon (that super hot marathon where they had to close the course) How 20 seconds have changed her life How running in bad conditions conditioned her Why you have to run your race, your pace What is a focused blur Tera's favorite places along the Chicago Marathon Course What we need to remember when we are out running the marathon How to run the Chicago Marathon Her dietary rules What she eats every day that may surprise you What she eats for good luck the day before a marathon Portillos and Gold Coast dogs are Tera's favorite places for hot dogs Why you can't put ketchup on a Chicago Hot dog Why she eats at PotBelly's everyday Why she recommends not taking running for granted Appreciate your body for what it allows you to do The big take-aways from our chat is that running is a gift and to celebrate how fortunate we are that our bodies can experience a marathon.  I love how Tera pointed out that when she was running one of the most important races of her life, the 2007 Chicago Marathon, she was extremely mindful of the media and people surrounding her. Tera is also our Runner of the Week, so she will receive detergent from our sponsor, Sport Suds. What makes Sport Suds unique is that it's able to get into the microfibers of your tech shirts and really remove the unwanted scents (if you know what I mean).  Who wants to have their favorite sporting clothes - or any clothes for that matter - umm, smell?  You can receive a 15% discount as a listener of the show by heading over to SportSuds.com and add the word “runlife”. Tera and I talked about running being a part of our lifestyles, with hers being more her job.  If you'd like to know the 11 Strategies for Living the Running Lifestyle, please head over to TheRunningLifestyle.com/Join to find out! Serena Marie, RD: Why carb loading is different for men and women Why men should aim for 70% of their calories coming from carbs four days before a marathon What the recommendations for carb loading are when it comes to women What types of food to be aware of and possibly avoid 48-72 hours before a marathon The Little Beet in NYC, the restaurant Serena and I are obsessed with The latest on Bruttus, the official cat of the Running Lifestyle Show, and how the product, Kittyo could really help Bruttus not be so grumpy The latest on Serena's knee and my toes Serena recommended that men focus on foods such as rice, rice crackers, bananas, and well cooked vegetables four days before a marathon.  For us women, her "general" advice, (because we know EVERY body is different), is to eat what we normally eat, but to avoid insoluble fiber foods such as cruciferous vegetables, oatmeal, legumes, beans, and kale. Those are great foods in general, just not 48-72 hours before a marathon.  Serena's blog post about this can be found HERE. Thanks to ElliptiGo. I'll be able to sustain my level of fitness, even if I have to take some time off from running due to sore toes. Calling all fans of Disney, Running, or Inquiring Minds about how much protein to eat. We have the episode for you.  You'll hear all about the MAJOR pixie dust my son William received at Typhoon Lagoon, the best places to run at Disney World, where to eat at DW, what rides you must ride, and the resorts my husband Robert and I recommend.  Becky Kotsifas is back to tell us about her third half marathon this year at Disney, the Disneyland Half Marathon, and compares it to other runDisney races she has run.  Serena Marie, RD,  talks all things protein and then Serena and I discuss our training for the Chicago, NYC, and Philadelphia Marathons. Want to know about how you too can have the gift of running be a part of your lifestyle? Head over to therunninglifestyle.com/join and you'll receive the 11 Strategies to Live the Running Lifestyle. Special thank you to Jeff Galloway and ElliptiGo for getting me ready to run the Chicago, NYC, and Philadelphia Marathons.  ElliptiGo is like a an elliptical machine/bike that you ride outside. It gives you a great runners high (and I mean HIGH) and lets you “run” without the impact! William Gormley ·         How to experience the ultimate pixie dust at Disney World, which is opening a park.  William Gormley shares with you how he was “Big Kahuna” and what that means.  And how you can be Big Kahuna someday. Robert Gormley ·         What resorts to stay at and running around the Boardwalk, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom (don't do it!), and Port Orleans Riverside and Port Orleans French Quarter ·         New restaurants we tried  ·         The restaurant which is the best value when it comes to Crab Legs ·         The number one tip when eating at Be Our Gust ·         Favorite restaurants we go to every time ·         What dessert NOT TO MISS at Boma ·         What rides not to miss at the parks ·         What great tips we received from The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World by Bob Sehlinger and Len Testa. The big takeaways when it comes to the interviews with William and Robert Gormley is that you need to get to a park early, if you want to be able to open it.  We strongly recommend running at the Port Orleans Riverside and Port Orleans French Quarter Resorts.   Some restaurants not to miss are Cape May Cafe, Be Our Guest, Boma, Sanaa, California Grill, Wolf Gang Puck Express, and Narcoose's. Our favorite rides include Kilimanjaro Safari, Expedition Everest, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Splash Mountain, Toy Story Midway Mania, Soarin, and Test Track. We booked directly with Disney World this trip.   When we don't go through the Disney World Reservations to book our trip, we have been very happy and satisfied with David's Vacation Club Rentals.  Through David's service, we have been able to pay a moderate hotel's price, but stay at Deluxe Resorts including Bay Lake Tower, Beach Club, Animal Kingdom Kidani Village (with a savannah view) and the Boardwalk Resort.  Every time we have requested a certain type of room, David's team has been able to come through for us (thank you!). Becky Kotsifas  ·         Discusses her year of Run Disney - Princess Half, Tinkerbell Half, Disneyland Half, and Wine and Dine Half ·         The special medals Becky has received for running multiple races ·         Celebrating the 10 year Anniversary of runDisney ·         Highlights of the Disneyland Half Marathon ·         The signs along the course ·         The breakdown of men vs. women in the Disneyland Half ·         Why the Wine and Dine Half Marathon is a favorite among many people Serena Marie, RD,  ·         Why you need protein even if you're not lifting a lot of weights ·         Serena's explanation of how much protein a runner needs & how to do it ·         How to estimate your protein needs depending on your running distance and goals ·         How to estimate a portion of protein if you are a man or woman ·         Where to go for a list grams of protein in foods ·         What are great sources of protein   The big take-aways from our talk with Serena are to know how much protein you need based on your goals, weight, and distance.  If you're training for for 5ks/10ks or recreational running aim for ~1 gram of protein per kilogram.  If you're training for  marathons should aim for ~1.2-1.4 gm/kg protein. If you're training for endurance events in conjunction to heavy strength training regimen ideally aim for ~1.6-1.7 gm/kg. Go to https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/eat/fd_exch.htm (which is actually a site through the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, but refers to the American Dietetic Association food exchanges) to get a list of how much protein is in a serving. You can estimate protein by looking at your palm.  If you're a woman, your palm can be estimated to be a 4-5 ounce portion of high biological value protein (meat, fish, eggs). If you're a man, your palm will represent 5-6 ounces of high biological value protein. Each ounce of animal protein has 6 grams of protein.   Please say a prayer, send positive intentions, that Serena's knee gets better. Another way to support our efforts is to donate to Team Kari and Serena Run NYC and Chicago for Action for Healthy Kids.  Every dollar makes a difference in helping a child eat healthier foods and move their bodies. Next week we're going to hear from Dr. Vinny Kripalu, MD, an internist who practices an integrated medical approach and is a fellow marathoner.  Please subscribe to the podcast through iTunes, Stitcher, or whatever podcast app you use.  You never know when a surprise episode comes up and by subscribing, you won't miss it. :-)

Training for Chicago and NYC Marathons, discussion about the Marine Corp Marathon and Action for Healthy Kids with Runner of the Week, Tom Kreider, and Serena and I talk about marathon training and what is the ideal choice when eating bread is what is in store for today.  If you want to make sure you don't miss a single update from The Running Lifestyle Show, please head over to www.therunninglifestyle.com/join and find out the 11 Strategies to Create a Running Lifestyle. Jeff calms me down when I am freaking out “on air” about running a 20 mile run, having pain in my right hip, updating The Running Lifestyle website and trying to balance family and work while training for two marathons.  Jeff shares how you can never go too slow in a long run. In fact, you can even walk the whole way which enables you to keep up your endurance going in to a race.  The longer you run, the more time there is for aches and pains to appear, so Jeff recommends running for as little as 10-15 seconds and then walking 30 seconds. Tips Jeff shares to battle the heat is to run in the dark (safety first), and dumping cold water over your head every 20 minutes. Some of Jeff's running groups stat their long runs from 2-3:00 AM to avoid the sun. Wow! We discuss how the ElliptiGo is an amazing piece of machinery that allows someone to train with out the impact. Turns out that I went out too hard on the Go in the beginning with one hour rides including hills.  Ideally, when starting out with the Go, its recommended to start with 15-30 minute gentle rides.  Jeff has recommended that I replace one of my easy 30 minute Tuesday/Thursday runs with an easy 30 minute ElliptiGo session. Yay! I LOVE the Go so that was magic to my ears.  The ElliptiGo is a fantastic tool for hip strengthening. Speaking of magic, we discussed how to determine what a Magic Mile is. The Magic Mile gives you an indication of your race pace.  To determine a Magic Mile, run a mile, then multiply it by 1.30 because people generally slow down by 30% when running a marathon.  When running a long run, because you can never go too slow, add two minutes to race pace.  I ran a 10:30 Magic Mile recently, so that means I would run a 13:39 marathon race pace, which means when I go out for a long run now, I should run it around a 15:30 race pace.  As time goes on, and it cools down, it will be interesting to see how my time is affected. Jeff has helped over 10,000 runners and receiving videotaping of people running just doesn't give enough information. Many people attend his running schools and seminars across the world to work on their form.  Jeff recommended I go back to my physical therapist who knows my body best to see “what is going” with the pain in my right hip. Serena and I are going to have our virtual race where people can run 2.62 miles by November 1st (the day of the NYC Marathon), and receive a special certificate.  The cost of the virtual race is $26.20 and all of the money raised will go to Team Kari and Serena Run NYC and Chicago.  Friendly reminder, Jeff has the Jeff Galloway 13.1 on December 13, 2015 in Atlanta.  There is a chance I may be going down there to join in on the fun. We then transition over to our Runner of the Week, Tom Kreider. You may recognize Tom as he has been on the show before.  The person who donates the most money to Team Kari and Serena in a month, comes back on the show to share their running story.  Tom is running the Marine Corp Marathon in October, which is his second marathon (Disney World was his first and he had a great time) and is really looking forward to it. Tom surprises Serena and me and challenges you, the listener of the Running Lifestyle Show, to donate to Action for Healthy Kids by Saturday, August 22nd. If you donate (and the kids and us really hope you do because they need healthy food and fitness equipment in their schools), Tom will match up to $300.  If you are going to donate, can you PLEASE donate now?  HERE is the link. Just click and donate. The kids and Serena and I thank you. :-) Friendly reminder, we're having a raffle on Sunday, September 26th where for every $25 you donate, you receive a raffle ticket. What's included in the raffle are Jeff Galloway books and times, Sleep Soundly Every Night, Feel Fantastic Every Day books from Dr. Robert Rosenberg, Oofos footwear, BANDIwear products, and much more! Serena can't help herself but to share her love and knowledge of all things food.  We discuss how our training is coming along and Serena answers a question from our private Facebook Group about what type of bread to eat is best. Serena recommends sprouted bread as it has a lower gliadin count.   Gliadin increases appetites, so a lower gliadin count is ideal.  Serena eats spelt bread on occasion as it is sprouted and had a lower gliadin count. Have an awesome week and we'll “see you” next week with the Race Director of the Chicago Marathon, Carey Pinkowski. How potassium is responsible for regulating heartbeat and muscle function and is important in neuron function. Why extreme high or low potassium levels can cause irregular heartbeat, which can be fatal. How chloride helps maintain a normal balance of body fluids. Which electrolytes (hint Sodium, chloride and potassium) are lost through sweating You can find potassium is in fish, yogurt, beans, fruits and vegetables Vasopressin & aldosterone (hormones) will make it so if there is too little sodium, the kidneys will excrete less in the urine and sweat If there is too little water, the kidneys will excrete more sodium to maintain the electrochemical gradient Too much sodium means the body will excretes excess sodium through urine and sweat Excess electrolyte consumption will just contribute to additional excretion of sodium through urine and sweat Over 10,000 mg of sodium is stored in the body and why that is great for us Exceptions in regards to taking in electrolytes is for people with markedly elevated hyper/hypothyroidism and/or a salt restricted diet PubMed is like a Google for scientific, controlled studies What the salt on your body at the end of a run means Why people don't feel great during hot runs Importance of eating a diet rich in micronutrients, so you don't need to take in additional electrolytes What type of salt to take in (hint pink Himalayan) Hydrate to thirst - avoid being thirsty What to do all week long to be setting up your long run for success Eat water & micronutrient dense fruits and vegetables to avoid thirst and optimize hydration   Information gleaned for this episode were taken from the following studies Study of 14 amateur marathoners (male): sodium concentration maintained http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3324692/ Higher temps impair performance r/t exercise induced hyperthermia http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3359364/#pone.0037407-Goulet1 Drink to Fluid to Thirst http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24085484, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21454440   Serena and I discuss how our training is coming along and then I give a sneak peak at the raw conversation Jeff Galloway and I have on next week's episode. If you haven't heard, Serena Marie, RD and I are running both the Chicago and NYC Marathon for Action for Healthy Kids. Action for Healthy Kids provides grants for school breakfast and lunch programs and fitness equipment. Donate Here! Our runner of the week, Russ Perry, claims he is not a runner, but then is convinced that he is. Don't you love those types of runners of the week? :-) We learn about the Ragnar Trail Race in Arizona (so want to do this race!), and how to train and not train for a race. It's kind of funny what Russ reveals and a lot of people can probably relate. :-) Contact: Serena Marie, RD: Website: www.SerenaMarieRD.com Facebook: /SerenaMarieRD Twitter: @SerenaMarieRD Instagram: SerenaMarieRD   Jeff Galloway: Website: jeffgalloway.com Facebook: /jeffgallowayfan Twitter: @JeffGalloway   Russ Perry: Website: DesignPickle.com Facebook: /russperry Twitter: @russperry
