Der ersten Generation VR geht die Puste aus und das merkt man 2018 deutlich an. VR für Endverbraucher ist beinahe abgemeldet. Noch dazu gab es einige nennenswerte Pleiten, unter anderem: Future Lighthouse (Januar) Lytro und Giroptic (März) NullspaceVR (September) Jaunt (November) StarVR, Imax VR und Blippar (Dezember) Wie wirkt sich das auf die zweite VR-Generation aus? Und welches Gerät könnte den Durchbruch bringen? Ein Trend, der sich schon jetzt abzeichnet: Gerade kleinere Studios und Hersteller verschieben ihren Fokus auf den B2B-Markt (Vive Pro, XTAL, StarVR, Varjo) mit teuren Highend-Geräten und Profi-Software. Einzig der chinesische Hersteller Pimax versucht mit seinen Brillen noch die Gaming-Nische zu stürmen. Facebook verhält sich genau gegensätzlich, sagt eine Highend-Version der Oculus Rift 2 ab und setzt mit Oculus Rift S stattdessen auf ein kleines Upgrade. Welche Rolle wird autarke VR mit Oculus Quest spielen? Und was machen Valve, Microsoft und Sony? Was wird aus HTC? Hier sind die heise online News mit Isabel Grünewald Verdi ruft im Weihnachtsgeschäft zu Streik bei Amazon auf Mitten im Weihnachtsgeschäft hat in der Nacht auf Montag ein mehrtägiger Streik von Beschäftigten an zwei Standorten beim Versandhändler Amazon begonnen. Die Gewerkschaft Verdi rief Amazon-Mitarbeiter des Versandhandelszentrum Sachsen in Leipzig auf, bis zum Heiligabend zu streiken. Im Versandhandelszentrum in Werne in Nordrhein-Westfalen sollen sie zunächst bis Dienstagabend streiken. Der Streik könnte jedoch bald auf mehr Standorte und längere Zeit ausgeweitet werden, sagte ein Sprecher. Mit dem Streik wollen die Gewerkschafter ihre Forderung unterstreichen, Arbeitsbedingungen tarifvertraglich zu regeln. Erderwärmung senkt Arbeitsleistung Wenn sich die Temperatur wie von Klimaforschern befürchtet in den kommenden Jahrzehnten erhöht, könnte dies drastische Auswirkungen auf die Wirtschaft haben. Davon geht zumindest das National Climate Assessment des US Global Change Research Program aus, berichtet Technology Review. Je stärker die Temperatur steigt, desto langsamer werden übliche Arbeiten verrichtet und auch die kognitive Leistungsfähigkeit sinkt. Besonders dramatisch wird dieser Produktivitätsrückgang bei einer Umgebungswärme von 28 Grad Celsius, so Reed Walker, von der University of California in Berkeley. Apple zieht iTunes-Update zurück Apple hat iTunes 12.8.1 zurückgezogen. Grund für den Rückzieher sind offenbar erheblich Probleme, die das Einspielen der neuen Version auslösen kann: So lässt sich der Browser Safari nicht mehr öffnen und es kommt sofort zum Absturz. Das Update sollte eigentlich Probleme bei der Wiedergabe von iTunes-Inhalten über AirPlay-Lautsprecher von Drittherstellern ausräumen sowie die Leistung optimieren. IMAX verabschiedet sich von Virtual Reality 2016 hatte IMAX begonnen, VR-Angebote ins Programm zu nehmen und die Produktion von Inhalten zu unterstützen. Nun zieht der Kinobetreiber die Reißleine und will die letzten verbleibenden VR-Center in Bangkok, Los Angeles und Toronto schließen. Schon vor dem endgültigen Ende der verschiedenen Ansätze hatte IMAX erklärt, dass die Reaktion der Zuschauer positiv gewesen sei. Im Podcast schildert er seinen Ersteindruck zu Tragekomfort, Tracking, Steuerung und App-Auswahl und vergleicht die Brille mit der unmittelbaren Oculus-Konkurrenz Oculus Go. Außerdem überlegen wir, für welche Zielgruppe die VR-Brille gebaut wurde. Facebook-Zwang bei Oculus Venues In der Social-Streaming-App Oculus Venues können bis zu 1.000 Zuschauer gemeinsam einem Konzert oder einer Sportveranstaltung beiwohnen. Die Übertragungen ähneln einem Besuch in einem riesigen Imax-Kino. Eine Besonderheit: Nutzer werden nicht einfach so im Kino platziert, sondern anhand ihrer persönlichen Interessen und Verbindungen bei Facebook. So soll man leichter mit anderen Personen in Kontakt kommt. Entsprechend setzt Venues einen Facebook-Account voraus - wer keinen hat, muss draußen bleiben, denn der Oculus-Account reicht nicht mehr aus. Das hat einen Mini-Shitstorm im Oculus Store mit vielen schlechten App-Bewertungen zur Folge. Wir diskutieren, ob die Proteste gerechtfertigt sind - und haben einen sehr unterschiedlichen Blick auf die Dinge.
