In today's complex and rapidly changing organizational environments, continuous improvement isn't just a luxury—it's a necessity. One invaluable tool for driving this improvement is the After Action Review (AAR). This ideology emphasizes that effective leadership isn't a one-time achievement but a continuous commitment that requires daily effort and accountability. By understanding and embracing this mindset, leaders can better navigate the challenges they face, build resilient teams, and foster an atmosphere of mutual trust and high performance. June 16, 1991. Denver, Colorado. An armed gunman commits a robbery from the underground vault at the United Bank Tower on Father's Day and makes off with $197,000 in cash. While the six employees from the vault are allowed to live, the assailant fatally shoots four guards: 41-year old Phillip Mankoff, 21-year old Todd Wilson, 33-year old William McCullom Jr. and 21-year old Scott McCarthy. Two-and-a-half weeks later, a 54-year old retired police officer named James King, who once worked as a guard at United Bank, is arrested and charged with the robbery and the murders. However, since the stolen money is never recovered and no physical evidence links King to the crime, the case against him is very circumstantial and King is acquitted of all charges at trial. Was James King actually responsible for this crime or did law enforcement allow the real perpetrator to get away with it? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a controversial unsolved bank robbery/quadruple homicide which has become known as “The Father's Day Bank Massacre”. Creating a culture of psychological safety within a team is paramount to achieving peak performance in any organization. It establishes an environment where employees feel both secure and valued, empowering them to openly share ideas, admit mistakes, and challenge established norms—all in the name of continuous improvement and innovation. Such a culture nurtures the growth of trust and collaboration among team members and between leaders and their teams. When psychological safety is absent, employees may become mere shells of their potential, merely fulfilling basic duties with minimal engagement. The loss of this vital aspect of team dynamics can lead to decreased productivity, stifled creativity, and ultimately, a higher turnover rate, as individuals seek workplaces that recognize and appreciate their contributions. For leaders, fostering psychological safety isn't just about nurturing a positive work atmosphere—it's a strategic imperative. By encouraging open dialogue, listening actively, and acting on feedback, leaders can not only avert potential pitfalls but also tap into the collective intelligence of their teams. Such actions not only bolster morale but also drive better decision-making and enhance the organization's ability to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing business landscape. For almost 30 years, Alan Jantzen was the man behind the scenes for what became one of the Fort Collins restaurant industry's most dominant organizations - Hot Corner Concepts. Featuring amazing brands including Moot House, Austin's American Grill, Big Al's Burgers & Dogs, and Comet Chicken, Hot Corner Concepts set the standard for quality and consistency in our region. Along the journey, Alan was given many opportunities and lots of responsibility, but was never granted an opportunity to become an owner, and in the spring of 2021 he started looking for what's next. In September of 2021, he shot his shot - asking 42-year owner/operator John Arnolfo if he could buy the Silver Grill Cafe. “Absolutely not!” was John's quick answer. But - within a few weeks they had a back-of-the-napkin deal worked out, and by December Alan was the proud owner of Dish Up, LLC DBA Silver Grill Cafe. In the meantime, Alan was approached by Val and Nick Lanteri, owners of Vern's Place since 1990, to see if he was interested in stewarding their restaurant into its' next chapter! He pushed pause on that conversation in the moment, but by mid-summer of 2022, Alan and his wife Jackie started Dish Up II, LLC DBA Vern's Place, and now operate two classic restaurant institutions, with a total of 167 years of history - 90 years at Silver Grill Cafe and 77 years at Vern's Place! Alan got his start in the restaurant business as a teenager, and his mom drove him back and forth to Greeley from his hometown of Ault for a dishwashing job until he'd saved enough money to buy a car. He moved to Fort Collins and got a job at Moot House in his early 20's, and was soon the right-hand-man for Scott McCarthy and Steve Taylor, then-partners in their first restaurant. His stories of restaurant launches and turnarounds and successes continues from there, and based on our conversation the successes at Silver Grill and Vern's are very likely to continue. So please tune and enjoy my inspiring conversation with Alan Jantzen.Check out Vern's PlaceCheck out Silver Grill CafeEpisode Sponsor: InMotion, providing next-day delivery for local businesses. Leaders across the world and all industries find themselves in a very similar situation - employee shortages due to the "Great Resignation." The Great Resignation is the ongoing phenomenon where large numbers of employees have been leaving their jobs in search of other opportunities or life changes. But why is this happening in the first place and how can leaders mitigate it to protect their organizations. That is what we are investigating today. Why the Great Resignation? When the Global COVID-19 pandemic struck the world, it caused a large number of people to either be laid off from their job, furloughed, or forced to work from home. The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
Scott McCarthy has been in the military for over 20 years and is a leadership expert. His leadership journey started when he was young and had the drive to take control of everything that he needed to be planned. Transferring these skills into the Canadian Army, Scott enrolled as a Logistics Officer in 2001 when he was selected to attend the prestigious Royal Military College of Canada. At the age of 24, Scott commanded an Army transport platoon comp comprising of 80 soldiers. At 33, he was selected to command a Logistics squadron of 200 members. As you can see, Scott knows how to compete as a high-performing leader and knows that leadership is a cycle. He understands how to build high-performing powerful teams, how to delegate as a leader to be a force multiplier, and is proficient in setting goals for high-achieving leaders. Today's show is about the simplicity of leadership and communication within marriage. We need to be clear about things that we want as men and husbands while also being servant leaders to our wives and what they need, want, and desire. A lot of men live in two camps when it comes to communication. We either throw ourselves on the sword for the sake of our wives and family, while feeling empty. We end up neglecting ourselves in a noble, selfless way without realizing it. On the other hand, we are extremely selfish and only think about ourselves. The goal of today's show is to explain the common ground between both of those camps where we support our families while also communicating what our needs are as a husband and father. #29 - The goal of the How To Life podcast is to help dispel and diminish fears that we all encounter in life. And one of the big fears - it certainly was for me my senior year of college- is WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH MY LIFE? If you are facing this question, I understand the anxiety that often surrounds it. And I would like to offer some potential ideas. I haven’t done this on my show yet, but I want to present some options and the many benefits they could offer you. Today you are going to hear an interview I did with Major Scott McCarthy of the Canadian Armed Forces. He is going to share the story of his career in the military that sparked as a member of a youth program called the Royal Canadian Army cadet corps, which then inspired him to enter the Royal Military College of Canada, which in turn has provided him with a very solid, stable, and beneficial career. There are many benefits of a military career, and one of the most valuable for Scott has been the leadership skills that he has acquired. He constantly uses those skills as a still-active member of the military, but he has also been able to help others learn how to lead and be more effective leaders with the business he has created called Moving Forward Leadership. He has a podcast of the same name that features some very impressive and notable guests talking all about leadership. He also offers programs, coaching, and mentorship to help you learn these skills and be a more effective leader whether it is in big business, small business, government, non-profit, or even as a parent. We all need leadership in our lives. It is a skill that can be developed and nurtured whether in the military or through private coaching or through life experience, and Scott can help you find your way.Show notes can be found at:howtolife.com/029
“As a leader, you have to be thinking strategically. You must think about your visions — thinking ahead in every problem, and figuring out a way. You must have time and space that helps you look at where you are in your business and how you can create a sustainable future. Do the analysis, answer the questions such as, ‘Why are we here? Where do we want to go? What is that path? How does it work? What do we need to do?' “ — Scott McCarthy

Show Notes "Every time you have to speak, you are auditioning for leadership." --James Humes Leadership matters and in this episode of The Entrepreneurial You podcast, Scott McCarthy tells us why. There are so many important elements to being an effective leader; it just doesn't happen by chance. Communication Here is a snippet of what she shared on this episode of the podcast: "Communication is key. If you can't communicate your intent, your own vision, what you want to achieve, it's going to fall apart. The other thing is being present, being seen you got to be able to show that you can do whatever it is that you demand of your people and I went extremely far with this. So when I was that transport platoon commander, (my job isn't to drive vehicles, it's not the drive to get in truck and drive the truck. But I did. I got into every piece of vehicle every piece of equipment that we owned and operated. Why? So that I had an understanding of what my guys would go through on a daily basis when they were operating that equipment. How difficult is it actually to move a semi, a tractor trailer that has a tank loaded onto the back of it. How difficult is it to move a bus, a refueling truck? Up here in Canada, snowplow, right? How difficult are those tasks to actually achieve? So that gives you actually a greater fidelity when people come to me like oh, we need this piece of equipment for this reason, actually understand quicker and then that shortens those timelines." ---- Hot Point: It is important to communicate with your team and to be very present with them. HTML All The Things - Web Development, Web Design, Small Business
In this episode we sit down with leadership expert Scott McCarthy, to discuss leadership skills related to small business and independent entrepreneurs. Segment 1 - Introduce Yourself Segment 2 - Starting Out Do you think that leadership is more of a school-learned skill (note-taking, reading, etc.) or more of one that you learn by putting it into practice? How closely would you relate self-discipline with leadership skills? Should you work on self-discipline before trying to lead others? When entrepreneurs are first starting out, they’re generally alone, or with a small group of other company founders. This leaves them partially or completely isolated from leading other people, a skill they would need to develop should their company grow and hire employees down the road. What advice would you give to someone looking to up their leadership game, before they hire employees? A common mentality for new entrepreneurs is to just dive in and figure things out when you get there, which could lead your business into disaster. What’s your opinion on this mentality? Should people prepare more before they dive in? How tied up should leaders get in the details? Should staff worry about details and leaders focus more on the big picture? (ie setting a sales goal without having the intricate details of how to reach it) Many people that are thinking of starting a business are looking to stash some money away from their day jobs so that they can slowly lower their hours to work on their business idea. Given that their day job is a different experience from their would-be business, how would these entrepreneurs transfer any leadership skills they’re learning on the daily, to their new business? Segment 3 - Types of Leader One of the things that I struggle with a lot, is trying to determine what kind of leader I want to be. I want to maximize my team’s output, but that the same time, I don’t want to be a “force to be reckoned with” when entering the office. I often flip between being a ruthless money-only kind of leader, a laid back “tech culture” leader, or something in between. Does this kind of decision naturally work itself out as you gain more management experience, or is it more dictated by the stage of the company? (ie only the richer companies can afford to be laid back) How much, if at all, does the job dictate the type of leader needed? Should leaders have “modes” that they snap into in certain situations? (ie Be really monetarily aggressive during an economic downturn, and lighten up when the business improves) Web News - Difficult Situations When faced with a difficult situation, having a strong leader is critical to guide the team through the storm. This is easier said than done, however, because there are so many aspects of a business that a leader has to keep in mind Things like: employees, asset management, capital, revenue, expenses, etc. In an example scenario, let’s say that there is a struggling app development business that has 1 boss and 5 employees. The business is struggling to find customers and therefore can’t afford to pay their staff’s wages for any more than a couple of months. The company does have some valuable assets in the form of useful apps that could be put up for sale to raise capital. In this situation... How critical is employee loyalty? Should layoffs be step 1? Should assets be sold off before layoffs are considered? If layoffs are inevitable, how do leaders soften the blow? Or do they just move on? What is the main goal the leader should push for? (ie keeping the people employed, maximizing profit, liquidating to gain capital for themselves, retaining assets, etc.) Scott's Links Website w/ Social Links https://movingforwardleadership.com Facebook Group https://movingforwardleadership.com/mastermind Free eBook Preview of "The 9 Foundations of Leadership" https://movingforwardleadership.com/download Email Scott for a free 15 minute coaching call scott@movingforwardleadership.com You can find us on...
