This week we catch up with Jaz and Grant Wearin from Modus Operandi. We caught up with Grant around 12 months ago after Modus was named Champion Large Brewery at the Indies and we had a wide ranging chat about that award, beer quality and date coding. This conversation was recorded last week as the pair were gearing up for their fifth birthday celebrations and I was interested in hearing from the couple about the realities of running a family brewery. When I last spoke with Grant, the pair were expecting their first child and I was interested to hear how, with baby Arch about to celebrate his first birthday, they are managing the demands of an expanding brewery and finding balance in an industry - often with unsocial hours - with their expanding family. As happens in a dynamic business, the interview was cut short and when we reconvened a few days later Jaz had been struck down with the flu, but the second half of the conversation features Grant discussing the special celebration beers the brewery is releasing to mark its fifth anniversary, as well as a beer launched for IPA Day next week. We discuss the challenges the breweries face is building a core range while acknowledging the importance of regular releases and seasonals and how they manage these one-offs while maintaining quality. Common Bond Brewers is helping revitalize Downtown Montgomery, Alabama Many homebrewers have a dream to open their own brewery.  For Common Bond Brewers co-founder Andrew McNally the dream grabbed him in 2014 after participating in a homebrew competition with Good People Brewing in Birmingham, AL.  As he drove home her pondered life, liberty, and starting his own brewery.   He decided then that he was going to make it happen.  Andrew partnered with his friend Tim Doles and the two set out to build a brewery.  With the help of friends investments and putting their own financial tails on the line they opened in April 2018, the first production brewery in town in Montgomery. McNally and Doles admit that Montgomery isn't a craft beer town, yet.  However, there was overwhelming excitement from the community leading up to the brewery opening and fantastic support since they've opened.  Their core beers (a Blonde, Pale Ale. IPA, and a Rye Amber) offer familiar flavors and a little something different.  Through their Hop Workshop series, they'll explore a variety of styles with a focus on the hop profile. Common Bond is also helping to revitalize the downtown area, a location that just a few years ago, "was not somewhere you wanted to be," according to McNally.  Their building has been around for decades and is shared with Bibb Street Pizza.  Elements from the original building were used in the decor of their taproom. In the news this week Brian shares info on changes to the brewery-to-brewery transfer laws, the first beer brewed from marijuana plants, and the upcoming IPA Day and Mead Day. Our beers this week included Common Bond's Blonde, Ramber (Rye Amber), and Hop Workshop 001 brewed with Denali hops.  We also cracked open a Pontoon Kill the Pain, Creature Comforts Arcadiana, Hutton & Smith Wheatwine, and Ironmonger's Billett, a blood orange Pilsner.

Everyday is IPA day. Even though there's an actual "IPA Day" on the calendar (sometime in August maybe?) it really occurs every day of the week. Saison needed its own day to bask in the sunlight and be appreciated for its delicate intricacies, and Allagash Brewing created such a day. We celebrated Saison Day with our very good friends at Tonewood brewing. Ryan Egan from Tonewood sat in, Jared Ruocco from Allagash stopped by to explain Saison Day, we figured out where our lost microphone cables escaped to, and Richard explains his latest employment situation. We like to think we're starting a tradition with our #ipaday podcasts. This one is all over the place. They say it is good to make lists if you are writing something, so here is a list about what you can expect: Dogfish 120, Pamprin, Rodeo Clown, dead frogs, Art Car, yoga mats, Yellow Rose, dogs and kids at bars, amaretto, 7-Iron, Back Pew, cheatin on your favorite brewery and Snapchat. Oh, and "Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret," Republican haircuts and corn ravioli. That enough?

Jacob takes his talents to Dooley's place where Eddie, Dooley and Jacob have 5 different types of IPA's.  They tried Singlecut Is This The Real Life? IPA, Mayflower Evolipulin (good luck pronouncing this one),  Rogue Yellow Snow IPA, Lord Hobo Boom Sauce, and Gigantic Brewing Ginormous Imperial IPA.  They discussed what's going on in the news by using the first three words of each news topic.  They pondered if Oprah can do certain things.  And they closed it out with an exit interview.
