More than a decade ago I used to watch Doreen Virtue's weekly tarot forecast and eagerly wait to see if her predictions came true. Like so many other folks who were looking to modern new age spirituality to answer questions and help create a life full of purpose. She offered tarot-esque decks that had themes like mermaids and angels and said anyone could learn how to read and hear the voices. It was all so fluffy and fun. But then Doreen seemingly heard the voice of God, became a born-again Christian, and denounced all her previous work. She now spends her time telling her followers how to be good Christians and how to spot the devil in modern new-age culture. Derek isn't as convinced as we are but I'm hopeful he'll come around.Other topics discussed:* My celebrity hater* Hangxiety* Britney Monopoly* Elon Musk & Twitter* Aliens!!!!The Superficial Spirit is a podcast that explores how pop culture affects our spiritual experiences and seeks to uncover unconventional ways people experience the divine…Every episode explores a different area of spirituality including tarot, crystals, psychics, manifesting, plant medicine and modern new-age trends. In the podcast, we ask questions like is modern spirituality a cult? Is Ayahuasca really that profound? Are psychics and tarot even real? What about fame, money, sex and social media? How do they affect our spirituality? Can the superficial really be profound? Ultimately, we believe in one thing: spirituality is real but the tools we use to define it may not be magical at all.The Superficial Spirit is hosted by Peter Breeze, a former club kid and underground pop star who found success in queer clubs across Canada and America. He believes that his time as a fame-obsessed, hard-partying club-kid was a conduit for his spirituality and is passionate to connect with people who've also had unconventional or scandalous experiences exploring their own spirituality. The first time Derek was on the show was to talk about how Lady Gaga saved his life. By opening up about her own mental health and medication journey she made him feel more comfortable taking control of his own. Ever since, Derek and I have been blowing up each other's DM's about my podcast guests, Britney's IG and gossip about the queens from Canada's Drag Race. Derek is back to take a deep dive into the big question: what it really means to be spiritual, why are people seeking this experience out, how to define it and where to draw the line when it comes to faith-based experiences and/or healing. He's a fan and a critic and we love him for it.Follow me: @peterbreezeSubscribe on Substack:The Superficial Spirit is a podcast that explores how pop culture affects our spiritual experiences and seeks to uncover unconventional ways people experience the divine… Every episode explores a different area of spirituality including tarot, crystals, psychics, manifesting, plant medicine and modern new-age trends. Today Jess and I take a dive into the Cover Story podcast by New York Magazine that takes a look at a study that was conducted to uncover the effect MDMA would have on treating PTSD. While I really enjoyed part 1 of this season when they covered problematic behaviours during Ayahuasca ceremonies and retreats I found this part of the podcast a little shallow. There were some interesting moments but generally, I feel like they were trying really hard to uncover a story that felt a bit weak when it comes to speaking about MDMA therapy as a whole. It also brings up a wider conversation about folks who are looking into alternative therapies to help them heal, what it means for people who experience trauma and how folks with addiction may benefit, or not, from exploring mind-altering alternatives to traditional therapies. We breakdown what it was like auditioning for the show, getting cast, keeping it a secret and then surprising her best friends ON CAMERA. We also talk about the rich and sometimes dramatic herstory of Bratpack and what its been like being part of a drag super girl group. I recently came across a post on Instagram of some spiritual thought leader telling people, in a very aggressive tone, that they need to let go of their desires in order to manifest them. It doesn't make sense. Jess and I break down healthy and non-healthy ideas of what detachment could mean. Then, I speak with Columbian - French - Canadian Drag Queen Adriana. Paul takes us on a little history lesson of the origins of the new age philosophy and sheds some light on the other side of the argument; that there is a lot of power and beauty in the new age world if we could only get past the modern and superficial interpretation of it.
