Inspired by a quote attributed to the eastern mystic Meyer Baba, Bobby McFerrin created this a cappella masterpiece. And, although Michael Musto of the Village Voice has proclaimed it the “worst song of all time”, and Blender Magazine snarked “it's difficult to think of a song more likely to plunge you into suicidal despondency,” this irrepressible ditty stands as the cornerstone of a singular musical career, festooned with awards and encomiums, including a Grammy for Lifetime achievement in 2022. It's not so much the possibly insipid - (depending on your level of cynicism) - lyrics, it's the purity and perfection of Bobby's voice alone, albeit overdubbed, that communicates its message of joy. The son of an opera singer and a voice teacher, Mr. McFerrin possesses a preternatural perfection of pitch and tone that has enabled him, among many other extraordinary feats, to trade horn parts with the Marsalis brothers, or deliver a flawless William Tell Overture solo.As a philosopher and exponent of music's healing potential for the human brain, Bobby continues to spread his message. Since 2021, he has conducted “Circlesongs” at Freight and Salvage in Berkeley, CA, where audience members are encouraged to improvise alongside the master - a unique fusion of jazz and therapy. Here's an ironic side-note: George H.W. Bush used the song for his presidential campaign, and Bobby protested, saying he would not vote for him. Then, he stopped performing the song in protest. I guess he wasn't too happy.

Steven Maglio heard a recording of Frank Sinatra singing MY KIND OF TOWN, and to pass the time on his new daily trek, he would sing the song to himself over and over. After a few days, he decided he needed another song and began to explore the only Sinatra album his parents owned at the time, A MAN AND HIS MUSIC. That was the beginning of his addiction to Sinatra and that whole world of standard songs and singers. TANYA MOBERLY has been performing in cabaret since 1997 when she co-created the THE BLONDE LEADING THE BLONDE. The show ran for 8 episodes over the course of 5 years and received a MAC Award nomination for special production. Sandra Bargman's life journey has been multi-faceted. As a kid, she always wondered why she was here, if she had a life mission, if there is an afterlife. Sandra was insanely fascinated with cemeteries. Raised Presbyterian, she loved the rituals, and singing in the choir, but foundshe needed to look outside organized religion to find HER answers to the big questions. JILLIAN SNOW is a singer and actor who graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. She has worked predominately in comedy, gracing the stages of Gotham Comedy Club, the Laugh Factory, and Comix NYC as a Liza Minnelli impersonator. After seeing her perform, Michael Musto of the Village Voice said, “This could open up Minnelli to a whole new audience!” Eventually, Jillian fled New York so she could get some sleep and found exile in Portland, Oregon. As an actor David was nominated for Broadway World's “Performer of the Decade” for his performance in “Murder for Two” at Broadway Rose Theatre. David is a Liberace tribute artist who performs with Jillian Snow (as Liza Minnelli), and Bo Ayars (Liberace's actual Music Director from 1973-1985).

Eight year-old Rhoda Penmark is angry. Not because her father, a colonel, is heading off to Washington for four weeks. Not because her apartment building's janitor, LeRoy Jessup, is hovering a little too close for comfort. No, Rhoda's pissed because her classmate Claude Daigle has won the school's penmanship medal, and in Rhoda's mind, that just isn't fair. Meanwhile, Rhoda's doting mother, Christine, has begun to wonder whether Rhoda might be a little too interested in the medal, and when word comes that Claude has met a suspicious end at the school picnic, Christine's curiosity turns to worry. Is Rhoda really as sweet and innocent as she looks? Is LeRoy really just a mixed up fool who monologues on occasion? Or is something more nefarious afoot – something to do with heredity, with nature vs nurture, and a certain coincidence that takes place whenever Rhoda is in the vicinity of those she considers obstacles to her desires? Michael Musto has had a front row seat to nightlife and pop culture for decades, from Andy Warhol to Paris Hilton, he's seen it all.Follow me: @peterbreezeSubscribe on SubstackThe Superficial Spirit is a podcast that explores how pop culture affects our spiritual experiences and seeks to uncover unconventional ways people experience the divine… Every episode explores a different area of spirituality including tarot, crystals, psychics, manifesting, plant medicine and modern new-age trends. In the podcast, we ask questions like is modern spirituality a cult? Is Ayahuasca really that profound? Are psychics and tarot even real? What about fame, money, sex and social media? How do they affect our spirituality? Can the superficial really be profound? Ultimately, we believe in one thing: spirituality is real but the tools we use to define it may not be magical at all.The Superficial Spirit is hosted by Peter Breeze, a former club kid and underground pop star who found success in queer clubs across Canada and America. He believes that his time as a fame-obsessed, hard-partying club-kid was a conduit for his spirituality and is passionate to connect with people who've also had unconventional or scandalous experiences exploring their own spirituality. Peter shamelessly explores the spiritual power of celebrities like Britney Spears, Courtney Love, Paris Hilton and The Real Housewives.Guests include RuPaul's Drag Race Superstars, Reality TV stars, Scientists, witches, psychics, tarot readers, naturopathic doctors and regular people who've been affected by modern Spirituality.Every episode includes a segment with @jessica.daily, Peter's Spiritual correspondent and a former reiki master and intuitive who's become passionate about sharing her own journey becoming disillusioned from the new age community. Michael Musto steps Behind The Rope. Michael chats about the full trajectory of his career none the least of which was his ahead of its time legendary Village Voice column which included dish, tabloid fodder, celeb accolades and interviews with anyone who was and is everyone. Michael breaks down the process of “outing” Gay Hollywood, the hate he received for it over the years, Rosie, Ellen, Jodie Foster, where Hollywood is today on the subject, the obvious celebs who are still in the closet - oh hey there Missy Elliott and Queen Latifah and why and just who may be slipping under our radar. Did we mention, tabloid fodder? Michael also breaks down his ahead of its time blind item, how he was not only the original blogger but also an ahead of his time influencer who picked some of today's A list names out of obscurity and what he thinks of today's social media culture, famous for being famous, reality tv (did someone say Real Housewives and Kardashians) and the Queen or King of blind items, Deux Moi. Michael also opens up about how one of his blind items led to the investigation and ultimate arrest of now infamous club kid Michael Alig for the death and dismemberment of Angel Melendez. Michael discusses which celebs were the nicest, rudest, most upset at his hold nothing back snarky opinion in print and what current day celeb scandals keep him up at night. As all roads often do, Michael deep dives Madonna - how she, then unknown, prevented him from sound checking with his band, how he predicted she will “never amount to anything” - a statement which still gets him screamed at by M fans globally, Madonna's current social media behavior and whether she is “trying too hard” or once again is just ahead of us all. Finally, we chat about how his friend Andy Warhol would approve of Andy Cohen being deemed the modern day Andy Warhol, how he would have wanted to appear on RHONY and be spending his days doing portraits of our good friend, Countess Luann!! @musto184 @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: LULULEMON - lululemon.com (This Holiday Season Shop The Best Gifts at Lululemon) TALKSPACE - talkspace.com/velvet ($100 Off Your First Month) RAKUTEN - rakuten.com (Or Get The Rakuten App to Start Earning Cash Back Today When You Shop Over 3,500 Stores!) In late March of 1996 a box containing the mutilated remains of an unidentified man washed up on the shores of Miller Field in Staten Island. Little did authorities know that this discovery was indelibly linked to the who's who of New York City Nightlife, and the king of the club kids himself, Michael Alig. Join WWBD as we take an ultra deep dive into the world in 1980's and 90's New York City night life. We trace the road to the concept of being famous for being famous and explore the rise of the elusive, colorful, living works of art and influence that were known simply as the club kids. This counter cultural phenomenon would change the landscape of art, music, and night life in a way no one knew was possible, and sadly, it culminated in one of the most shocking and grizzly murders of it's time. *There were a great many sources this week, most of which you can find below, but we will post more of the talk show appearances in our social media this week.
