The experience for mothers with children on substance use disorder is very traumatic, and oftentimes they also isolate themselves from the world. They even stay out of touch with friends for fear of judgment. But the greatest impact for mothers is the hurt they feel seeing their child go through this disease. They are the first people that reach out for help on behalf of their children, they are the first responders to their children's well being. That being said, mothers need recovery, too, for their own physical and mental well-being. Listen to this powerful conversation of two loving mothers, Gail and Shelly Young who found in themselves a common connection to allow themselves to be just their authentic self, with no judgment, no blame or guilt. Highlights of the episode … - What inspired Shelly to create the newsletter "Recover the Mother"? - Shelly's thoughts on the stigma and shame associated with addiction that she felt as a mother. - Why does Shelly disapprove of the language used to refer to people with substance use in conversations or even in the recent book she has read by Martha Beck? - Why is there a need to focus on teaching children early on about taking care of the body, the mind and spirit? - Why can mothers be at risk of isolating themselves from people? - No matter how hurt mothers feel, it can't disconnect the love for their children. - Why did Shelly choose the non-traditional path for her own recovery? - What is the objective of the newsletter, “Recover the Mother”? - Shelly's words of wisdom for mothers in remembering self-love. - Is there a book in the offing for Shelly Young? Society has a backlog in the understanding that drug addiction is a disease just like diabetes is or any kind of disease. There is also a stigma that society has attached to people with drug addiction, for them to feel the shame, being an outcast or a junkie. In this episode, Gail speaks with Gary Mendell, the founder of Shatterproof, who as a parent was impacted by a child with addiction. After his son Brian died, he made a promise to his son that he would spare others of this tragedy. That promise has now become a movement, something that the country needed to bring people together for awareness of the disease. Highlights of the episode … - What drove Gary Mendel to start the foundation Shatterproof? - In what ways does Shatterproof work in changing the stigma attached with drug addiction? - How was the foundation able to change the knowledge and attitudes of people in Pennsylvania about the disease in just 12 months? - Is Shatterproof going in the direction of going to the media or Hollywood to share stories and information that drug addiction is a disease? - They say that there is a higher chance of addiction when started at a younger age, what should be the role of schools in educating the kids? - Gary's website, its impressive line up of Board of Directors and the resources and programs available for addiction treatment. - What recommendation can Gary give to parents who undergo the same emotional experience and are impacted by addiction? - Words of wisdom on self love and self care that Gary passed on to listeners, especially those who have the drug addiction disease. Sometimes the impediment to our success in life is not really understanding about ourselves. We are a combination of conditioning from outside forces and our natural human design, but there is an inner authority which somehow leads us to a better outcome in our decisions. We all can learn profound lessons from my conversation with Lucas in this episode of I Love Me Lab Podcast. One is that by living outside of our design, we are bound to be frustrated, bitter, and depressed. It is also one of the reasons why we suffer health crashes and correspondingly hurt our mental health, as well. Make sure you listen all the way to the end and gain insights that can help us improve our lives. Highlights of the episode … - What is human design? (...How are we all unique despite our commonalities?) - How can human design reveal about us? - In what ways can human design help people to love and trust themselves more? - When you become aware of your human design, how do you balance what you're conditioned to be and what is natural for us? - The four main distinctions or types of human design. (...An example of what happens when a projector businessman is coached by a generator coach.) - How can human design work with couples, partners in business, in any relationships? - What is the difference between human design and astrology? (...How do our dual consciousness interplay together?) - Human design can also help with how we can cope with the rapidly changing global imprint. - What does Lucas think about the controversial concept of human design that people have "no choice"? - One piece of wisdom that Lucas can impart on self-love and self-care. There are myriads of emotions that go inside of you when you have an adult child still suffering from drug addiction. This affects the parents especially with the mothers because it is the natural responsibility of the mothers to rear for their child. It is very crucial for parents to feel grounded so that they are not operating in a crisis mode - emotionally, mentally, financially. This solo episode of Gail is something close to her heart because she has experienced it and is still ongoing with her adult child's addiction. Parents who have adult children who have addictions find it hard to reconcile where they went wrong in their parenting. There is that guilt that they may have something to do why their adult child turned to addiction. Gail has been very passionate about this topic because she had to go through grief and guilt over an adult child with addiction for years. In this episode of I Love Me Lab Podcast, Gail had a very enlightening conversation with Mike Speakman, a Life Coach and Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor. He is also the founder of the support group called Parents of Addicted Loved-ones or PAL. The discussion in this interview focused more on how parents should manage themselves when they have an adult child in addiction. What are the 5 things parents need to bear in mind when an adult child is in addiction? How can parents manage themselves so that they, in turn, can help their adult child in addiction? Emile Allen, MD, BCH, CI is the Director and Founder of The Pharmacy Within, a drug-free pain therapy solution for chronic pain, and a Board Certified Hypnotist (BCH) and Clinical Instructor (CI) of Medical Hypnosis. He is the former Chief of Urology and Vice-Chair of Surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital-La Jolla, California. Dr. Allen enjoys teaching people globally, how to manage their chronic pain drug-free through his online classes and sessions. His passion for helping people worldwide has made him a two-time international award-winning author and an internationally-recognized speaker. He had to experience a freak accident while performing an operation when a piece of medical equipment malfunctioned and used his body as the ground and electricity ran through his body. He had a traumatic brain injury and injured his left hand, as well. Through that he has to learn how to manage his pain drug-free and learn of alternative types of therapy, which led him to learn hypnosis. His medical mission to Haiti reinforced the belief that pain is created in the subconscious. In Haiti, people don't have easy access to anesthesia and operations are performed without it. After the operations, people don't complain about pain because they knew that they have to have this operation, so they prepared their mind. We are all in a constant search for growth and included in that is the overall condition of our physique. In this episode of I Love Me Love Podcast, Gail was able to have a great conversation with Ivette Pinela, an Advanced Practitioner of Structural Integration and a Rolfing expert. Ivette fell from an accident at a restaurant where she was working at that time. She was advised that she would not be able to stand or sit for more than 20 minutes, but she was not ready to accept that at 23. She got introduced into the Rolf Method and although it was rough at first, in less than six sessions her body was healed. Today she continues to help people in more ways than they can imagine to be pain-free.
