This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.comNancy and Sarah dive into the messy New York magazine cover story on literary superstar Neil Gaiman, accused of sexual assault by multiple women. The story broke over the summer in a British podcast — which Nancy and Sarah listened to, and much preferred — and they zero in on the story's different presentations and ethical tangles. It's a tale of celebrity, status-seeking, boundarilessness, and cruelty. But is it criminal? Let's discuss. Also discussed:* Joe Biden made a speech* Bathtub as flytrap* If I serve you a steak, and you write to tell me you loved it, then logically do I:* Serve you another steak* Assume you don't really like steak and only told me you did so we can keep hanging out* Report me because I pressed the steak on you while knowing you hated steak* What does logic have to do with it?* To be clear: We are anti-vagina whipping* Do women want sexual freedom, to be protected class — or both?* Please don't trot out experts to support your insupportable point* Nancy knee-jerks over journalism* Is consent really black and white? And if so, why has it spawned five million think pieces and hours of podcasts like this?* Jon Ronson puts Sarah to sleep but “in a loving way.”* “If my literary hero appeared to me when I was 22 when I happened to be hot and not a binge-drinking chubby lonely-heart watching Real World marathons while hungover on the futon …”Plus, Sarah hates the “cup of tea” consent video, some love for fact-checkers, the 1-minute video that's made Nancy laugh 20 times, and much more!

John 13; Philippians 2 Message Video Link Our call to worship is from Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

Hello Journey Friends and Family, Thank you for your prayers and grace as we closed our in-person worship services this past Sunday. I continue to be grateful for the staff's ability to put out great online content in all areas of ministry. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to resume in-person worship services this Sunday. Although I was hopeful that we would be able to do so, it is has become clear that it would not be wise at this time. In addition to canceling all in-person worship gatherings this Sunday, we have also closed our offices and the staff are working from home. We have suspended all other gatherings that would take place physically at either Journey location. This would include but is not limited to small groups, student ministry, Bible Studies, Wednesday work crew, iServe, recovery ministry, and any other use of the facilities. Our pastors, staff, and volunteers are continuing to make diligent efforts to stay in touch with everyone who has been impacted so we can pray for them, care for them, and monitor their recovery. Although we can't predict exactly when we will resume onsite worship services, our goal is to re-open as soon as it is safe to do so. The driving question we are asking when making these decisions is what is the wisest and the most loving thing to do for our community and our church family. Please join me in praying for two things: 1) a full recovery for all who are sick 2) that we will be back gathering together sooner than later. I continue to be grateful for the incredible staff God has blessed us with at Journey. Our staff has pivoted without complaint and has led with excellence every step of the way. I am grateful that in this unique season they continue to work toward making disciples of Jesus who Love God, Love People, and Serve the World. You can continue to check our website and social media for the latest updates. www.JourneyChristian.com I want to encourage you to join us online this Sunday as we continue our series titled “Awaken, how to revive your spiritual life”. Be safe and we'll see you soon! Pastor Dustin Aagaard Associate Lead Pastor

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth” (John 14:16-17). As Jesus prepared to leave his disciples, he spoke at length about the Holy Spirit. In our text he names the Holy Spirit ‘our advocate'. The Greek word is Paraclete, which is also translated as "Comforter" or "Counselor". In the ancient world, a Paraclete was someone summoned to give assistance in a court of law. That may sound like a lawyer in our context, but this was before lawyers were a thing. The word includes the ideas of comforting, encouraging, even urging certain actions. Clearly, a Paraclete was more than a lawyer, and the terms was used in more than legal situations. To understand how the Holy Spirit is our ‘Paraclete', let us consider several biblical examples. As Christians, we encounter situations in which words fail us. We know we ought to pray but have no idea how to articulate our thoughts and emotions into cohesive sentences. In such situations, the Spirit becomes our Paraclete. Paul put it like this, “the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God” (Romans 8:26-27). That is a lot! Jesus made this promise regarding the Holy spirit, “Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit” (Mark 13:11). This reminds me of Moses who complained that he was a lousy public speaker. God sent Aaron to speak for him. Likewise, Jesus sends us the Holy Spirit who will give us the words we need. God's words to Joshua are apt here, “Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). In the book of Acts, we read about the church persecuted. The first wave ends with the conversion of Saul. Towards the end of the story, we read this, “Meanwhile the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and was built up. Living in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers” (Acts 9:31). These are just a few illustrations of how the Holy Spirit acts as our Paraclete. There appear to be two facets to this work of the Spirit. On the one hand, he is a tender source of solace when we are wounded, defeated, and the grief-stricken. On the other, the Spirit comes to us when we need strength. He empowers us with courage and boldness. As Comforter, He both consoles and emboldens that in Christ we may be more than conquerors (Romans 8:37). Sometimes it seems as if the Spirit is reduced to some minor role in the drama of redemption. But Jesus will have none of that. Jesus says that he will send another advocate. Jesus himself is the first Paraclete (1 John 2:1). The Spirit is coming in his stead, not as some second-rate lawyer. He comes from the Father, sent by the Son. He comes with all the power and resources and creativity of God. An old song says, “He lives, he lives, Christ Jesus lives today! You ask me how I know he lives? He lives within my heart” (I Serve a Risen Savior). This is all true, but it misses the vital role of the Holy Spirit in teaching and assuring us of these things. As Paul says, “When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!' it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16-17). God's encouragement to Joshua is worked out in our lives through the Holy Spirit. Living in us, the Spirit enables us to be ‘strong and courageous; not to be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with us wherever we go' (Joshua 1:9).

Message Notes: Unstrapped “Indicators” Luke 16:1-14 1. I can use what I have to get what I VALUE. Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.' Matthew 22:37-39 (NLT) I tell you, use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends. In this way, your generosity stores up a reward for you in heaven. Luke 16:9 (NLT) 2. My money reveals my CHARACTER. “Unless you are faithful in small matters, you won't be faithful in large ones. If you cheat even a little, you won't be honest with greater responsibilities. And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven? And if you are not faithful with other people's money, why should you be trusted with money of your own?” Luke 16:10-12 (NLT) For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. 1 Timothy 6:10 (NLT) 3. My money identifies who I SERVE. “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Luke 16:13 (NLT) Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 (NLT) ----- Connect with us! → https://linktr.ee/newlifeccThank you so much for joining us online today! Why the BODILY resurrection of Jesus is so important. Also, some interesting info about the gospel song, “I Serve a Risen Savior” also known as “He Lives.”
"I Serve a risen Savior, He's in the world today. I know that He is living whatever men would say." Sometimes we forget, or don't even know what Jesus endured for us on the cross. Hope you have a moment to listen and be amazed at how much our RISEN Lord loves YOU!

Everyone is an important part of the church. When we're all in the place God has assigned us, its amazing how God can use each of our gifts to build His church.
