“God's Gift: He Gave The Most” James 1:17Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Today we are going to talk about James 1:17. God is the perfect gift giver. In light of us God is a way better giver. I will loop in some other passages and shed some light on gift giving. Enjoy! When it rains, it pours! Remember that old saying? The high inflation in the U.S. and Europe at the time of this crafting of this podcast episode is an example of that. And, yeah, it's a real bummer when heavyweight problems like inflation come our way, especially when they are well outside our control. But God has a reality-check and a prescription for all that—and, in the flesh, it's not easy to be very pleased about implementing it. But it is the path to witnessing for God, perhaps even a path ordained by God. Join Kevin as we take a look at “God's reigning when it's raining.” // Download this episode's Application & Action questions and PDF transcript at whitestone.org.

Welcome to the audio podcast for Dogwood Church in Athens, TX.
We’ve been looking at 15 hymns from the book of Psalms (120-134), originally sung by Jewish worshippers on their pilgrimage to God’s Temple in Jerusalem. They are called “Songs of Ascent” since they speak of ascending to the Temple, which was located atop Mount Zion in Jerusalem. Though they were originally for the Hebrews on their long journey, they matter a lot to us, because we too are traveling, by faith, as believers in Christ Jesus. Pastor Marc Sharp continues the series today with part 4 by narrowing our focus, desiring not only to see the glories of God’s dwelling in the grandeur of the hills alone, or the Temple on Mount Zion; but we want to see God himself in his majesty! God can bring us out of our current circumstances and into something better, even something great. God gives us everything we have: all of our talents, all of our possessions, our relationships, our children. He gives us everything we have. Is this satisfaction? No, we should be content with what God has given us. Never be satisfied but always be striving to do better as God leads and guides us along, His way. There is the danger in God's blessing and that is a tendency to forget. We must never forget that every good gift is given by God. Remember that!

June 18, 2020Who Is God? (#4 in series)I AM - The Unchanging God "It is impossible for us to understand God exhaustively, but it is possible to understand Him meaningfully." Ravi Zacharias James 1:17 (NIV)Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.Immutability of God - Unchangeable. The negative of the word "mutable," which means subject to change. The word "mutation" comes from this.People change. Circumstances change. These things are mutable.God is immutable - God does not change. This is hard for us to grasp because we are always changing and we live in a culture that is rapidly changing. There is no escaping of changes.Examples. Kids growing up. Hair thinning.Change comes in many ways. ...Sometimes change is good, sometimes it is not so good. Sometimes change is necessary. Sometimes it is exciting. Sometimes it is scary. Regardless, life will always involve change.A.W. Pink, "Immutability is one of the excellences of the Creator, which distinguishes Him from all (of) His creatures." Exodus 3:13-15 (NLT) 13 But Moses protested, “If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what should I tell them?” 14 God replied to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you.” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: Yahweh, the God of your ancestors—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you. This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations. In other words, God does not change from generation to generation. J.I. Packer, "The name I AM is not a description of God, but simply a declaration of His self-existence and His eternal changelessness.” God did not say I WAS and I WILL BE. He said I AM. I forever AM. I will always be the same. I AM who I AM God says to Moses. James 1:17 (NIV) 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. Two words: change and shifting shadows. Both astronomical words in the Greek. Emphasize the variation of the heavenly lights - i.e. the variability of the sun, the moon, and the stars.James is pointing out here that while change may be true in our every day life God is not like that. He does not change. He remains the same forever. Think about this: there can be no deterioration with the Lord. He doesn’t get worse, nor is there any way in which He can become better. He can not become more holy than He is right now. There is no way for Him to become more powerful than He is right now. More loving, more full of grace, and so on. He is all that He is and always will be. He is perfection, therefore there is no need for change. His unchangeableness is a symbol unto us of His consistency. You see, He is not influenced by the passing of time, or the changing of the circumstances. People change...their minds, their words. Not so with God.Isaiah 40:8 (NIV) 8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever." When we read our Bibles we can rest assured that God still stands behind what He says. Despite what the liberal theologians say, God’s Word has not changed with the times. Human beings are dependable only to a certain degree, only to a certain point, but God is always dependable. And the permanence of His character guarantees the fulfillment of His promises.
There are an abundance of sinners out there to spread among all the churches. There is enough for all of us. Churches are not in competition with each other. After all, are we not all together one church, belonging to Christ. Everything we have comes from God. It is not about us. The ministry is about bringing sinners to Jesus Christ. As John The Baptist said in John 3:30, "He must become greater; I must become less". Those of us who are believers have been crucified with Christ and no longer live, but Christ lives in us. The life we live in the body, we live by faith in the Son of God, who loved us and gave himself for us.

The New Covenant matters because you can now CONFIDENTLY approach God. Faith is confidence in the person of Jesus Christ and in his power, so that even when his power does not serve my end, my confidence in him remains because of who he is. —Ravi Zacharias The New Covenant matters because God INITIATED it and Jesus SECURES it The New Covenant matters because it will NEVER change
