This episode was first published in November 2024. Veteran republican Marian Price initiated legal action against streaming giant Disney+ after the release of TV drama Say Nothing, based on a book of the same name by Patrick Radden Keefe, which her lawyers say depicted her as being involved in the murder of Belfast woman Jean McConville.Lawyers for Price, who was jailed for her part in the IRA's London bombing campaign of 1973, said the allegation was “not based on a single iota of evidence”.In this episode we replay an interview with Patrick Radden Keefe, recorded when Say Nothing was published in 2018.Radden Keefe explains how he reached his conclusion that Marian Price was centrally involved in McConville's killing, along with her sister Dolours Price. The Disney dramatisation of Say Nothing has brought the stories of the Price sisters and Jean McConville to a new global audience."Such allegations published on an international scale are not only unjustified, but they are odious insofar as they seek to cause our client immeasurable harm in exchange for greater streaming success. Our client has now been forced to initiate legal proceedings to hold Disney to account for their actions", Prices lawyers said.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by John Casey. Hosted on Acast. The success of Say Nothing has sparked a worldwide interest in the disappearance and murder of Jean McConville, the role of the Price sisters and the relationship Gerry Adams had with the IRA. It has also led people to ask questions about the Troubles, trauma and what they would have done if they had been part of a community under siege? But what if the history isn't history at all? On Free State today novelist Timothy O'Grady joins Dion and Joe to talk about the flaws in Patrick Radden Keefe's book. They ask what impact it has if many elements of the story are told from the perspective of people opposed to the peace process? It was around 7 in the evening in the Divis Flats when there was a knock on the door of the McConville’s. The children answered the door to a number of individuals. They asked ‘where’s Jean’ and when she appeared they told her to put on a coat and they took her out into the night. They told the children that she would be back in 30 mins. That was the last time Jean McConville was seen alive. In the days following her abduction, no neighbours called over to check on the children and no investigation was ever opened up. Jean simply vanished and no one wanted to know where she’d gone.

Joined today by investigative journalist, podcaster and best-selling author, Patrick Radden Keefe. Patrick and I talk about his long form podcast "Wind of Change" and what inspired him to do it. Known for his investigative journalism, we talk about one of his most famous pieces, "Anthony Bourdain's Moveable Feast". We hear about how he got the assignment, traveling to Vietnam with Bourdain after he ate with President Obama, what Tony was like off set, and how his tragic suicide affected the world. We transition to his underground sensation of a book "Snakehead" about Sister Ping and the Golden Venture saga from Chinatown. Patrick tells us how he gained people's trust in Chinatown and was able to write this book. We discuss one of the most celebrated books in the past 10 years, "Say Nothing" about Jean McConville's abduction and murder and "The Troubles". We chat about the Price sisters, the IRA, Gerry Adams and more. Patrick was one of the first reporters to talk about "El Chapo", he shares how he found out about him, being asked by a Cartel lawyer to write Guzman's biography. All of this and more from the Yale Law Graduate and one of the best authors in the game today. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In 2013, Patrick Radden Keefe, a staff writer for the New Yorker, came across the obituary of a woman named Dolours Price, a former member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA). Keefe's interest in Price led to sprawling research about an appalling crime that took place over the course of the three-decade Troubles in Northern Ireland: The disappearance of Jean McConville, a widowed young mother of ten children. His research led to his 2019 book, “Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland.” Mikhaila Fogel sat down with Keefe to discuss his book, the shocking history of McConville’s disappearance, the broader context of the terrorism and counterterrorism campaigns in Northern Ireland over the course of the Troubles, and what happened to the perpetrators and the victims of this crime.

In 1972, the I.R.A. abducted and “disappeared” Jean McConville, the mother of ten children, most of whom were teen-age or younger. Her case became one of the most notorious unsolved murders of the long period of unrest in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles. Patrick Radden Keefe wrote about McConville for The New Yorker in 2015. “On the one hand, it’s a story about a terrible murder that happened in 1972,” Keefe tells David Remnick. “On the other hand, it’s about how that history, far from being remote . . . was incredibly politically explosive.” While researching a book about the murder, Keefe stumbled across an overlooked clue. Now, Keefe tells Remnick, he’s pretty sure he knows who murdered McConville. Keefe’s book, “Say Nothing,” is available on February 26th.

1972 was one of the darkest yet defining years in modern Irish history. Nearly five hundred people were killed in the conflict known as “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland. Events of that year like Bloody Sunday, Bloody Friday and Operation Motorman would shape Ireland for decades to come. In many ways one death has been remembered more than any other – this was abduction and murder of Jean McConville in December 1972. In the last two weeks this event in particular has brought 1972 back centre stage when the prominent Irish politician and leader of Sinn Féin, Gerry Adams was arrested in relation to Mrs. McConville’s murder. This has had huge implications for history, as much of the case against Adams appears to have originated in a historical archive seized by the police. In this podcast I look at the events in Ireland in 1972 and how it has come to pass that 42 years later one of the Ireland’s most prominent politicians arrested. What was in this historical archive? What are the rights of historians to record history vs. the rights of families of victims who may want to read private archives looking of answers? What are the rights of people to their good name when allegations are made about them in historical interviews? Finally perhaps the most important question for historians - who has the right to record our history? This show takes you through these controversial questions and indeed the interviews conducted with former members of the IRA revealing what the allegations made were.Let me know what your thought of the show by contacting me @irishhistory on twitter or irishhistorypodcast on facebook.  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
