Do Giant People Exist, Is The Proof In Old Newspapers? Part 2 The Dude Network This has been a super fun and interesting journey that we have embarked on. Jason Colavito, a researcher, is to credit for a lot of this as he chronologically ordered these articles that we are simply just reading for this show. The fascinating part of all of this is the reported similarities in the descriptions of the articles. It is certainly a fun topic to do a deep dive on. So the question is did giants exist?
In the first half, SkyWatch TV host and author Derek Gilbert discussed the origins of the 'Ancient Aliens' hypothesis and revealed a chain of evidence that links together Aleister Crowley, horror fiction author H.P. Lovecraft, and Erich Von Däniken. These links were originally proposed by researchers Peter Levenda and Jason Colavito, he pointed out. Gilbert elaborated on how Lovecraft's themes inspired two French sci-fi authors who delved into such mysteries as who built the pyramids, ancient glyphs, and the Nazca Lines, and this in turn seemed to directly inform Von Däniken's central thesis in "Chariots of the Gods" (1968), that technologies and religions of many ancient civilizations were given to them by ancient astronauts or ETs.Gilbert detailed Lovecraft's complex relationship with theosophy and the occult, noting, "Lovecraft considered himself an atheist and a man of science, but he was more than happy to draw on teachings of people like Helena Blavatsky." He also highlighted the mystical connections between Lovecraft's work and Crowley's magical beliefs. According to Gilbert, Kenneth Grant, Crowley's associate, suggested that Lovecraft was not creating things out of his own imagination but rather was hearing from the same supernatural source as Crowley, specifically concerning a plot device invented by Lovecraft called the Necronomicon (a grimoire of forbidden knowledge or spells). Grant believed this book actually existed in the Akashic records and that Crowley and Blavatsky were accessing it through occult practices. On the topic of ancient aliens, Crowley, in 1907, described a huge tentacled creature in the ocean's abyss, similar to the chaos monster of the Greeks. This was similar to how, some 20 years later, Lovecraft portrayed Cthulhu, the ancient cosmic entity worshiped by cultists. Gilbert also touched on such topics as ET entities called The Nine, the government group known as the Collins Elite, and Ezekiel's wheel.------------In the latter half, paranormal investigator and researcher Kate Ray spoke about her deep fascination with the supernatural, particularly fairies, which have become one of her subjects of expertise. When asked about the connection between fairies and ghosts, she explained her journey from traditional paranormal research to recognizing the presence of fairies in haunted properties. "The more I collected evidence, both in folklore and my own experiences, the more my colleagues and peers took my journey seriously," she reflected. Addressing the physicality of fairies, Ray suggested that while they could be considered etherical or spiritual beings, they have the ability to shape-shift and appear in different guises, perhaps changing from a very small being into human or animal form. The fairies are known to have a rather mischievous streak to the point that they can seem malevolent in their interactions with humans, she continued, adding they don't share the same system of values and morals that we have. Ray observed an increase in fairy interactions during the COVID lockdown as more people sought solace in nature and turned inward. Yet, she cautioned listeners about summoning fairies, stating that if you wish upon a fairy, "do so with caution and some kind of payment," as well as urging respect for nature, as she links fairies to environmental issues. She also spoke about her experience on the television show "Help My House is Haunted," where she utilized remote viewing techniques to connect with a "pixie-type character" causing poltergeist activity in a home.

In this episode, I spoke with author Jason Colavito regarding his book "Jimmy, The Secret Life of James Dean". Although he died at a heartbreakingly young age and appeared in only a handful of movies, James Dean revolutionized American manhood. As a celebrity and icon, he melded vulnerability with determination, sensitivity with strength, in a way that offered a bracing and—for some—threatening new vision of masculinity.

Mick West joins us to talk about trying to solve UFO mysteries while keeping his cool. Mick is the author of Escaping the Rabbit Hole: How to Debunk Conspiracy Theories Using Facts, Logic and Respect. He hosts a leading site for analysis of weird aerial phenomenon called Metabunk. He also maintains the site "Contrail Science" which tries to resolve the pseudoscience of "Chemtrails." In the intro there are some clips about NASA and US Congressional looks at the "UAP" phenomenon. I will argue that UAP is just a UFOmism and that the general public is largely unaware these are all just the same old things driven by the same old limitations of human perception and cognition. I mention Jason Colavito in the intro. It's worth checking out his historical take on this modern rebranding. Also mentioned in the episode was the sad (probably psychogenic) syndrome known as "Morgellons Disease." I wanted to include a link for the curious. Learn more about your ad choices. Chris Hedges is the guest on this special February 2023 fundraising episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, bestselling author, and social critic. His two most recent books are Our Class: Trauma and Transformation in an American Prison and The Greatest Evil is War. ***Your generosity and support help to sustain the podcast and to keep it free, not behind a paywall and available to all listeners.*** Chris Hedges reflects on the lessons he learned during his long career as a journalist about the “business” that is the news business, how the “truth” is manufactured, why it pays very well to be a careerist who does not care about confronting Power, and the ways that the limits of the approved public discourse are shaped to serve the interests of the rich and the powerful. He also offers counsel and advice to Chauncey DeVega about enduring difficult times and navigating the personal cost to one's physical, mental, and emotional health that comes from being a serious journalist who is committed to telling uncomfortable and unpopular truths in dangerous times. Chris Hedges also shares his worries about how Russia's war against Ukraine, and America and NATO's response to it, could potentially spiral out of control into a wider war and even worse disaster. Given all of the recent excitement about “UFOs” and an “alien invasion” of the United States (meaning balloons and/or drones) these last few days and weeks, there are two special bonus segments on this episode featuring professional skeptic and author Jason Colavito. The first segment is from 2021 where Jason Colavito explains why today's America is so sick with conspiracy theories and other anti-truth beliefs. He also outlines how right-wing extremists are using the public's interest in ancient aliens, UFOs, and other conspiracy theories to recruit new members (especially insecure white men) online. The second segment is from 2014 where Jason discusses a wide-range of topics including the ancient aliens hypothesis, why white supremacists are obsessed with UFOs, the faux rigor and "scientific" approaches used by the fringe history community, and the case of Betty and Barney Hill, an interracial couple who were supposedly kidnapped by extraterrestrials in the 1960s. And on this episode of the podcast, Chauncey DeVega shares a very special Valentine's Day review of the new movie Magic Mike's Last Dance. WHERE CAN YOU FIND ME? Before H.G. Wells penned War Of The Worlds, the alien invasion genre as we know it didn't exist. And perhaps more than any text in this series, his landmark science fiction novel focused readers deliberately on the monster in the mirror: the British Empire's civilizing, Christianizing mission, refracted through his technologically enhanced Martian colonizers. But 120 years later, War of the Worlds and its central premise have been coopted by the forces of nationalism, and Christian nationalism in particular. Today we're going to talk about how War of the Worlds captures the tension between two visions of the future amidst escalating crises today: a world that moves beyond the hallowing of blood and soil, and a world that violently, defiantly, embraces it. ALIENS BUILT OUR MOON - HOLLOW MOON DOCUMENTARY The Hollow Moon hypothesis and the closely related Spaceship Moon hypothesis propose that Earth's Moon is either wholly hollow or otherwise contains a substantial interior space. No scientific evidence exists to support the idea; seismic observations and other data collected since spacecraft began to orbit or land on the Moon indicate that it has a thin crust, extensive mantle and small, dense core, although overall it is much less dense than Earth. The first publication to mention a hollow Moon was H. G. Wells' 1901 novel The First Men in the Moon. In 1970, two Soviet authors published a short piece in the popular press speculating that the Moon might be "the Creation of Alien Intelligence". Since the late 1970s, the hypothesis has been endorsed by conspiracy theorists like Jim Marrs and David Icke.he Hollow Moon hypothesis is the suggestion that the Moon is hollow, usually as a product of an alien civilization.[1][2] It is often called the Spaceship Moon hypothesis[1][2] and often corresponds with beliefs in UFOs or ancient astronauts.[2][3]The suggestion of a hollow moon first appeared in science fiction, when H. G. Wells wrote about a hollow moon in his 1901 book The First Men in the Moon.[1][4] The concept of hollow planets was not new; The first discussion of a Hollow Earth was by scientist Edmond Halley in 1692.[5][6] Wells borrowed from earlier fictional works that described a hollow Earth, such as the 1741 novel Niels Klim's Underground Travels by Ludvig Holberg.[7]In 1920, fringe author Marshall B. Gardner cited Wells's speculation of a Hollow Moon as support of the Hollow Earth theory.[8]Both Hollow Moon and Hollow Earth are now considered to be a fringe theories or conspiracy theories.[9][1][10][11] The concept of the Moon as a spaceship is often mentioned as one of David Icke's beliefs.[10][12][13]Claims and rebuttalsDensityThe fact that the Moon is less dense than the Earth is advanced as support for it to be hollow. The moon's mean density is 3.3 g/cm3, whereas the Earth's is 5.5 g/cm3.[14] One explanation of this discrepancy is that the moon may have been formed by a giant impact which ejected some of the early Earth's upper crust into its orbit.[4][15] The Earth's upper mantle and crust are less dense than its core.[16]The Moon rang like a bellBetween 1969 and 1977, seismometers installed on the Moon by the Apollo missions recorded moonquakes. The Moon was described as "ringing like a bell" during some of those quakes, specifically the shallow ones.[17] This phrase was brought to popular attention in March 1970[1] in an article in Popular Science.[18]On November 20, 1969, Apollo 12 deliberately crashed the Ascent Stage of its Lunar Module onto the Moon's surface; NASA reported that the Moon rang 'like a bell' for almost an hour, leading to arguments that it must be hollow like a bell.[1] Lunar seismology experiments since then have shown that the lunar body has shallow moonquakes that act differently from quakes on Earth, due to differences in texture, type and density of the planetary strata, but there is no evidence of any large empty space inside the body.[17]Vasin-Shcherbakov "spaceship" conjectureSpeculative cutaway model of a Spaceship MoonIn 1970, Michael Vasin and Alexander Shcherbakov, of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, advanced a hypothesis that the Moon is a spaceship created by unknown beings.[2] The article was entitled "Is the Moon the Creation of Alien Intelligence?" and was published in Sputnik,[10] the Soviet equivalent of Reader's Digest.[1][19] The Vasin-Shcerbakov hypothesis was reported in the West that same year.[20]Their hypothesis relies heavily on the suggestion that large lunar craters, generally assumed to be formed from meteor impact, are generally too shallow and have flat or even convex bottoms. They hypothesized that small meteors are making a cup-shaped depression in the rocky surface of the moon while the larger meteors are drilling through a rocky layer and hitting an armoured hull underneath.[14]The authors reference earlier speculation by astrophysicist Iosif Shklovsky, who suggested that the Martian moon Phobos was an artificial satellite and hollow; this has since been shown not to be the case. Sceptical author Jason Colavito points out that all of their evidence is circumstantial, and that, in the 1960s, the atheistic Soviet Union promoted the ancient astronaut concept in an attempt to undermine the West's faith in religion.[2]"Perfect" solar eclipsesIn 1965, author Isaac Asimov observed: "What makes a total eclipse so remarkable is the sheer astronomical accident that the Moon fits so snugly over the Sun. The Moon is just large enough to cover the Sun completely (at times) so that a temporary night falls and the stars spring out. [...] The Sun's greater distance makes up for its greater size and the result is that the Moon and the Sun appear to be equal in size. [...] There is no astronomical reason why Moon and Sun should fit so well. It is the sheerest of coincidence, and only the Earth among all the planets is blessed in this fashion."[21]Since the 1970s, conspiracy theorists have cited Asimov's observations on solar eclipses as evidence of the Moon's artificiality.[22][23] Mainstream astronomers reject this interpretation. They note that the angular diameters of Sun and Moon vary by several percent over time and do not actually "perfectly" match during eclipses.[24] Nor is Earth the only planet with such a satellite: Saturn's moon Prometheus has roughly the same angular diameter as the Sun when viewed from Saturn.[24]Modernly, some scholars have claimed that "the conditions required for perfect solar eclipses are the same conditions generally acknowledged to be necessary for intelligent life to emerge"; If so, the Moon's size and orbit might be best explained by the weak anthropic principle.[24][25][26]

March is 'New Chronology' month! We'll not only be looking at Anatoly Fomenko's idea about how history is far too long, but we'll also dip into some other alternative histories too. Today we try to wrap our heads around Fomenko's hardly groundbreaking idea that history is wrong, and try to understand the general points of it. Spoilers, it's basically all made up. ____ Show Notes: (Why do I use Wikipedia in my show notes? Usually because it's not a bad place to start researching things, especially pseudo-theories. COVID, drones, and UAP are our topics this week. First, Mike and AJ discuss the most recent turn in the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, we consider the New York Times' investigation into 1,300 civilians killed by the United States' drone warfare, which was published this past weekend. Finally, our reaction to Jason Colavito's myopic piece in the New Republic about the Gillibrand amendment. Follow us on Twitter and support us on Patreon.Support the show
Why is ancient Egyptian civilization, including the Great Pyramids, the subject of so many conspiracy theories? Author Jason Colavito joins me to discuss how and why the history of Egypt has been rewritten and manipulated over the centuries.
In H.P. Lovecraft's 1936 novella "At the Mountains of Madness," a scientific expedition to Antarctica accidentally uncovers evidence—both archaeological and biological—of an ancient, perhaps otherworldly civilization. Eddie and Bill discuss how they first encountered Lovecraft, why his imagination was drawn to the polar regions of the earth, what the story tells us about early-20th-centuries anxieties about race and civilization, the influence this story had on "The Thing" and the modern ancient aliens myth, and more. There are two guests on this episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi is the author (with Joshua Horwitz) of the new book A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey from the Street to the Stars. He is also a professor at the Florida Institute of Technology, and a frequent contributor to the Discovery Channel and National Geographic. Hakeem has given multiple TED talks and is regularly invited to speak at science forums all around the world. Hakeem reflects on how he managed to go from being an at-risk youth and self-described gangster nerd to one of the leading astrophysicists in the world. He shares the choices, luck, highs and lows, and random good fortune that pushed him along on that journey. Hakeem also offers wisdom and advice about navigating the color line as a black scientist, the importance of mentors, and his relationship with the late Chadwick Bowsman. And of course, he does some teaching on the likelihood of UFOs visiting the planet Earth, dark matter, and the multiverse. Jason Colavito is a professional skeptic and author. His investigations have appeared on the American Heroes Channel and the History Channel. Colavito's essays and commentary have also been featured by The New Republic and other leading publications. His forthcoming book is The Legends of the Pyramids. Jason returns to the podcast to offer his thoughts on the Pentagon's newly released UFO/UAP report and what it does and does not reveal about “extraterrestrials” and other “exotic” and “unknown” “aircraft” and their supposed encounters with the United States military. Chauncey DeVega continues to warn that Donald Trump and his regime did in fact attempt a military coup. And Chauncey also highlights one of the funniest and most dark and revealing new episodes in the white right's anti-black and anti-brown “critical race theory” moral panic – Christian fascist Pat Robertson channeling his Django Unchained nightmare about black people taking up the “whip handle” against white people. Jason Colavito is a professional skeptic and author. His investigations have appeared on the American Heroes Channel and the History Channel. Colavito's essays and commentary have also been featured by The New Republic and other leading publications. His forthcoming book is The Legends of the Pyramids. Jason Colavito explains why today's America is so sick with conspiracy theories and other anti-truth beliefs. He also outlines how right-wing extremists are using the public's interest in ancient aliens, UFOs, and other conspiracy theories to recruit new members (especially insecure white men) online. Colavito also details how the various elements of right-wing conspiracy culture such as QAnon, the UFO community, and other subcultures came together in the January 6 coup attempt and attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump's followers. And Colavito shares what he believes the much-anticipated report by the Pentagon on “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena” will actually reveal – hint: these “aircraft” are not “extraterrestrials”. Chauncey DeVega continues to ponder why so many people are “shocked” by the new “revelations” about the true scale of Trump's coup attempt and how perilously close American democracy really was to being overthrown on January 6. And Chauncey shares what will likely be some unpopular opinions about the new films “In the Heights” and “The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard”. This is a sample episode of our new show In reSearch Of, which I'm co-hosting with Jeb Card. I hope you'll consider subscribing. I'm planning to keep the regular IRO episodes free, but offer bonus content for Patreon supporters. This is the pilot episode of In reSearch Of, the show where we watch the original TV show IN SEARCH OF… and consider some of the explanations that the producers chose not to present. In our inaugural episode, we watch the TV Special In Search of Ancient Astronauts, a repackaged cut of a German documentary about Eric Von Daniken's book Chariots of the Gods. We want to thank Rachel and Chris Lackey for the theme music (And Greig Johnson!). They host the excellent show Rachel Watches Star Trek. Also, we want to credit Jason Colavito for his excellent research into this and many adjacent topics around the Ancient Astronauts and Ancient Aliens tropes of the past fifty years, including his book: The Cult of Alien Gods: H. P. Lovecraft and Extraterrestrial Pop Culture (Seriously - check out this link to Jason's article. He gives some great contemporary detail on the impact of this TV special such as "... within 48 hours of the program’s broadcast, Bantam Books had sold 250,000 new copies of Chariots of the Gods." Amazing.) Oh - so as Jeb mentions, EVD is directly mentioned in the brainstorming session with Lucas, Spielberg, and Kasdan! You can check that out here. Walter Conkrite's UFO's Friend, Foe or Fantasy UFO documentary Show Notes: Dr. Harold P. Klein worked for NASA and was a major figure in the Viking mission. The Baghdad Battery - no reason to believe this was ever used as a battery. More likely a scroll container. Peter Bebergal writes widely on the speculative and slightly fringe. His essays and reviews have appeared in NewYorker.com, The Times Literary Supplement, Boing Boing, The Believer, and The Quietus. He is the author of Season of the Witch: How the Occult Saved Rock and Roll. His new book is Strange Frequencies: The Extraordinary Story of the Technological Quest for the Supernatural. ****To support The Chauncey DeVega Show during this fundraising month you can make a donation via Paypal at chaunceydevega.com or at Patreon.**** During this Art Bell Coast to Coast AM inspired New Year's Eve special episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Peter explains how mystics, psychics, and other practitioners of the occult and magic used the early versions of the internet as a space to practice their dark arts, how the national trauma of the American Civil War fueled the practice known as "spirit photography", and how séances were a space for female empowerment through the "spiritual fluid" known as "ectoplasm". Peter also researches if yes, you can actually hear the voices of the dead speaking through radio waves and other manifestations of "electronic voice phenomena". On this week's New Year's Eve special episode Chauncey honors Alan Naiman, a hero who worked as a humble (and very frugal) social worker, and who at the time of his passing away gave 11 million dollars to charities which help babies and children. Chauncey also reflects on our shared trials and struggles in the Age of Trump during these last few weeks of 2018. And as we wind down 2018 and transition to 2019, Chauncey offers some critical appraisals about the progress of the podcast, his own personal successes and failures during the past year, and (hopefully) shares some wisdom about goal setting and personal progress in 2019. There are two guests on this week's podcast. James Hansen is a professor of history at Auburn University in Alabama and the author of the acclaimed biography First Man: The Life of Neil Armstrong. Dr. Hansen has also served on the Research Advisory Board of the National Air and Space Museum and the Editorial Advisory Board of the Smithsonian Institution Press. Hansen shares his thoughts on the new movie First Man starring Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong, what it was like to advise Gosling on the role, consulting on the script, and how different audiences have imposed their own political views onto the movie. In addition, Hansen reflects on how fame impacted Neil Armstrong and what it was like to get to know Armstrong over the course of the many years it took to write such a definitive biography. Hansen also offers some insights into the relationship between NASA and the color line through such notables as the black women who were the "human computers" that helped to make the moon mission possible. Reed Tucker is the second guest. He is a journalist and author whose writing on entertainment and popular culture has appeared in the New York Post, Esquire, Fortune, USA Today and elsewhere. His most recent book is Slugfest: Inside the Epic 50-year Battle between Marvel and DC. Reed and Chauncey discuss the life and legend of the now departed Stan Lee. What is true about Stan Lee's life and what was fantasy and myth? Who were Stan Lee's friends and enemies? How can we view Stan Lee's life as a type of road map and barometer for the past, present and future of comic books and graphic novels? On this week's podcast Chauncey sounds the alarm about all of the animals hurt and in need of help because of the California inferno. Chauncey also makes some Thanksgiving week movie recommendations and then shares some "entertaining" stories about Donald Trump's corrupt new acting Attorney General and the latter's involvement with "inventions" such as a toilet for "well-endowed" men, Big Foot DNA, and money for time travelers. And of course, Chauncey has to shine a light on how Paul Manafort--one of Trump's henchmen--is apparently very much into "interracial" cuckolding and sex parties. Sara and Ken interview author and scholar, Jason Colavito
Jason Colavito is an author and editor based in Albany, NY. He is internationally recognized by scholars, literary theorists, and scientists for his pioneering work exploring the connections between science, pseudoscience, and speculative fiction. His investigations examine the way human beings create and employ the supernatural to alter and understand our reality and our world. He has published several books including The Cult of Alien Gods: H.P. Lovecraft and Extraterrestrial Pop Culture (Prometheus Books, 2005); Knowing Fear: Science, Knowledge, and the Development of the Horror Genre (McFarland, 2008); and Jason and the Argonauts through the Ages (McFarland, 2014). In 2011, Colavito launched his own line of print-on-demand books collecting rare texts about alternative history, the occult, and speculative fiction. Colavito appeared on Codes & Conspiracies on the American Heroes Channel in 2015 to offer expert commentary on the ancient astronaut theory and its impact on science, pseudoscience, and popular culture. Colavito's research on extraterrestrials and H. P. Lovecraft was also featured on the History Channel in 2009, and he has provided research assistance and consulted on such programs as Secret History of UFOs (NatGeo), Monster Quest (History Channel), Ancient X-Files (NatGeo UK), and William Shatner's Weird or What? (History Television Canada/NatGeo UK). Colavito began debunking fringe science and revisionist history in the web-based magazine Lost Civilizations Uncovered in 2001. Since then, his work has appeared in Skeptic magazine, Humanist Network News, Swift, The Canadian, and TVTome and other outlets. Colavito has also worked as a consultant for major museums, both public and private. In addition to nonfiction writing, Colavito has also authored several short stories. Colavito's speculative fiction has appeared in a number of outlets, including the anthologies 2012 AD (Severed Press, 2010), Elements of Horror (Elements of Horror Press, 2010), and Letters from the Dead (Library of the Dead Press, 2010), as well as magazines such as Twisted Dreams. Colavito holds a Bachelor of Arts from Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York where he majored in both anthropology and journalism. A summa cum laude graduate, Colavito was recognized as the Distinguished Graduate in the Social and Behavioral Sciences, and he was made the Jessica Savitch Communications Scholar for his work in journalism. In 2004, Colavito placed his first professionally published article, "Charioteer of the Gods," in Skeptic magazine. Shortly thereafter he sold his first book, The Cult of Alien Gods, to Prometheus Books.
Do you believe in UFOs? Alien abductions? In the 1960s, there were a slew of these reports, the most famous being Betty and Barney Hill who claimed they were abducted and experimented on by aliens. On March 12, 1909, The Arizona Gazette published an article titled, "G. E. Kincaid Reaches Yuma." It was a short, mildly interesting announcement that Mr. "Kincaid" was only the second person to make the perilous boat trip down the entire course of the Colorado River, starting from Green River, Wyoming and eventually reaching Yuma, Arizona. A feat worthy of mention in the papers of course, but aside from stating that he took over 700 photographs and "Some interesting archaeological discoveries were unearthed," there was not much indication of the news which was to come next. Twenty four days later, on April 5, 1909, the newspaper ran a follow-up to their first article on the adventurous Mr. Kincaid, except this time it was full, front-page coverage on just what discoveries he'd unearthed previously. This article (also uncredited) reported that along with "G.E. Kinkaid" (his name now spelled with a "k") a "Professor S.A. Jordan" and a team from the Smithsonian had investigated what appeared to be a large network of tunnels and rooms, some filled with ancient mummies and artifacts that did not appear to be from the Western Hemisphere. And that was the end of the story. No further stories were printed by the newspaper, no knowledge by the Smithsonian about any such expedition, and no one knows if "Kinkaid" or "Jordan" ever existed, let alone the cave itself. That leaves us with two questions: is this story real, and if real, what would be the implications to world history? Tonight's Quote: "First, I would impress that the cavern is nearly inaccessible. The entrance is 1,486 feet down the sheer canyon wall. It is located on government land and no visitor will be allowed there under penalty of trespass." "G.E. Kincaid," Explorer, referring to a cave full of anomalous artifacts he discovered in the Grand Canyon. For this episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, I had the great opportunity to talk with Jason Colavito. Our conversation is a real treat and gem for ghetto nerds and those others who are interested in fringe history and other types of "alternative" knowledge systems. Jason is an expert skeptic whose work appears on his eponymous website jasoncolavito.com. He is the author of numerous books. Jason has also appeared in documentaries and other media where he offers up his direct, clear, and reality based expertise on mythologies and magical thinking such as the ancient aliens hypothesis, the theory of Atlantis, and the myriad of distortions and lies about human events that have come to populate the History Channel and its auxiliary H2. As Jason and I discuss in this most recent episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, our world is full of wonder and amazing discoveries. Thus, there is no reason to lie, obfuscate, and generate from the ether, fringe histories, ancient aliens, and other like mess. Our world and universe is amazing enough without the need to create fictions that soothe our egos as opposed to nurturing the intellect. In this wide ranging and very educational conversation, Jason and I discuss why the ancient aliens hypothesis is so compelling, the faux rigor and "scientific" approaches used by the fringe history community, the fixation that white supremacists have with UFO's, Vikings, and giants, the Afrocentic dreams of how black Africans discovered the "New World", and the oft discussed case of Betty and Barney Hill, an interracial couple who were supposedly kidnapped by extraterrestrials in the 1960s.
Do you have a favorite invocation of Lovecraftian horror? Jason Colavito seems to have successfully traced many of the ideas that appear in UFO and ancient alien claims back to HP Lovecraft and other Weird Tale writers! Your thoughts? I'd like your thoughts on Thomas Ligotti's work. In "The Shadow out of Time" we see a future where mankind disappears from galactic history and Cthulhu seems absent as well. The beetles that inherit the Earth from humans do not seem to have been troubled by Cthulhu and his ilk. Might this be because humanity is assumed to have evolved defenses against Cthulhu but was destroyed in the process? There doesn't seem to be any good solution to the Arkham / Salem dichotomy, but what if Salem and Arkham were originally sister towns which were growing larger and eventually overlapped? A few decades after the witchcraft trials and because of the "bad press" Salem got from them, the people of the now abutting towns of Salem and Arkham agreed to incorporate as a single city named Arkham. Since then, some people still refer to historical Salem as "Salem" but that is no longer the name of the unified city. What made Lovecraft dislike Plato? What's up with Lovecraft and architecture? In many stories he uses the architecture of a culture or society as a metaphor for the society itself. Might the fly in "The Winged Death" have been inspired by Don Marquis' Archy, the poet cockroach? He too had to jump from key to key to type his messages. Criticism of L. Sprague de Camp's biographies of Lovecraft and Howard. Re "The Statement of Randolph Carter," was there any indication in future stories as to WHAT was down in the burial chamber? Did the Night Gaunts ever resurface in future stories? Do you think the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" could have been influenced by H. P. Lovecraft? I question your explanation that Lovecraft had to write his narrators as weak-willed sidekicks to their domineering best friends because readers wouldn't be able to sympathize with the mad scientists or demented occultists. Lovecraft was no stranger to unsympathetic --and, dare I say it, perverted -- narrators. I think there's more to the trope of intense male bonding in Lovecraft's fiction than just a narrative convenience. All the evidence, in my opinion, points to HPL being an asexual man who liked men. Do you feel that Lovecraft's true genius lies not just in his unique literary style, his aggrandizement of antiquarianism, his depiction of cosmic indifference or even in his inventive use of morphology, but his re-defining of the Greek Tragedy? I am curious if the cuttlefish might have had an influence in the image and name of Cthulhu? Might the magical conception of Wilbur Whateley be a satirical parallel to that of Jesus in the gospels? I have frequently encountered the phrase "That Which Should Not Be." Should not be what, exactly? Can you recommend any other weird fiction with an obvious Gnostic influence? And are there any other real historical religious sects, cults or movements like the Gnostics that strike you as being particularly Lovecraftian in their beliefs?
Another Lovecraft Geek podcast to carve by â?? whatever it is you usually carve â?? for our countdown to the high holiday of Halloween. Do you see a divide between those who read the original Lovecraft texts and focus more on the fun to be had celebrating the mythos, and those who focus more on narrative themes and pathos? Do you feel like the expansionists of Lovecraftian tales are more attempting to play in the sandbox of his mythos or to actually attempt to mimic the tragic pathos of his original work? What makes a work of fiction Lovecraftian? What are the best film adaptations of Lovecraft's writings, in your opinion? And, were he around today, how do you think H.P.L would have felt about his work being reinvented in cinema? Are you familiar with Robert Bloch's STRANGE EONS, and if so what do you think of it? Should the Cthulhu Mythos best read as a cohesive universe? How did Lovecraft manage to stay so current on the science of his day? When did HPL get the idea of the Necronomicon? Just how much do you think Lord Dunsany inspired HPL? At what point did he start reading Dunsany's work? I have always wondered if Lovecraft had lived through World War 2, how would the horrors of the nuclear age, death camps, etc. have moulded his further writings? Do you have any plans to gift us with another reading of a Lovecraft story? Which is your favorite mythos deity? Which deity's followers have the best chants andor prayers? Do you have a favorite Lovecraft themed board game? Are there any collections of August Derleth's own stories, not his so-called "collaborations" with Lovecraft, that you can recommend? As a writer of strange fiction, do you ever find yourself torn between the creation of a completely original story (even if influenced by HLP) and writing one that is part of the mythos (invoking the names of the Ancient Ones, etc)? Do you think there is any disadvantage to authors including Lovecraft references in their work? Is there any stigma among the big publishers, etc., when it comes to "borrowing" from other authors, like Lovecraft? What is your favorite Lovecraftian film? Not an actual work based on HLP, but the film that most evoked that eldritch feeling inside of you? Jason Colavito in his book "The House of the Octopus" raises the worship of the Octopus God "Tutulau" of Samoa, Fiji and Tonga as a possible source of H.P.L.'s inspiration for C'thulhu. Did Lovecraft know anything about this stuff?
