Today, we have the pleasure of hosting Dr. Mark Daye, an esteemed orthopedic surgeon and our first international guest from Canada. Dr. Daye is a double-boarded specialist who has an impressive background, including vet school at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, and a residency at Auburn. He's currently practicing at Metropolitan Veterinary Specialties in Akron and Mayfield Heights. Join us as we delve into Dr. Daye's expertise in cutting-edge orthopedic procedures and his commitment to pain management. Whether it's about diagnosing lameness, post-op care, or innovative treatments like the FHO procedure, Dr. Daye provides invaluable insights for pet owners. Plus, we'll discuss common issues like cruciate ligament injuries and how to recognize when your pet needs orthopedic care. One common problem is cruciate ligament tears. Dr. Daye explains that unlike in humans, where ACL injuries are often due to high-impact sports or accidents, in dogs these tears usually occur spontaneously, often with minimal trauma. Despite the misconception, breeds like Labrador and Golden Retrievers aren't more predisposed; it's just that there are more of them around. For dogs, a sudden limp in a back leg usually signals an ACL tear, which Dr. Daye can often diagnose with a physical exam, although x-rays can reveal secondary changes. It's fascinating to hear about the evolution from cemented to cementless hip replacements and how these advancements have improved the longevity and outcomes of the procedures. Ensuring these implants last the lifetime of the dog, especially with the newer bony ingrowth methods, significantly reduces the need for revisions and enhances the quality of life for these pets. https://www.metropolitanvet.com/staff/dr-r-mark-daye Support our sponsor for this episode Blue Buffalo by visiting bluebuffalo.com. Wild pigs have been an issue in Canada over the last 25 years, but a simple looking trap may be part of the solution to the problem. Called the "Pig Brig", it's big net that is 20-feet in diameter, which can be set up by one person in about an hour. To catch them, a pig simply walks underneath the mesh and once they're in, there is no way out. It's also portable so it can fit into a backpack.Aaron Sumrall is the Director of Outreach, Education, and Research at Pig Brig, the U.S. company that makes the traps of the same name. Aaron will talk about what inspired the creation of Pig Brig and the potential to use it to control other pests. A researcher with the Western College of Veterinary Medicine says the use of AI to assess animal welfare offers an opportunity to eliminate human error and bias during assessments. Dr. Martyna Lagoda says measuring welfare of animals is a complex task but there are animal-based indicators of welfare which are visible on the animal's carcass throughout the pig's life and these are used as the scoring targets of an automated system. She says the indicators tell a story of welfare retrospectively and can be tracked back to different stages of the production chain.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The 2023 Canadian Cow-Calf Survey is an online questionnaire set up to collect data to help understand longer-term trends in production methods and efficiencies. Collecting credible information directly from beef cattle producers helps the BCRC identify research priorities and information gaps, develop provincial benchmarks and examine changes over time that impact farms and ranches. Too much serotonin is believed to be a contributor to acute respiratory distress syndrome. I can't recommend it highly enough - so make sure to check it out and don't miss the awesome bundle of goodies that he is giving away on The Veterinary Project website until the end of April!...About Michael Bugg, DVMDr. Michael Bugg is a full-time real estate investor and veterinarian with over a decade of clinical experience in veterinary medicine. After graduating from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008, he practiced as a mixed-animal veterinarian before shifting to a small-animal general practice.Like many of his colleagues, Michael struggled with the unique demands of veterinary clinical practice. Overwhelmed and burned-out, he often felt as if his career was spiraling into a nightmare. He struggled to get ahead financially despite the long hours he spent at the clinic. His entire life was impacted by his career stress—so much so that his wife gave him the moniker Miserable Mike. This, along with working amid the early 2000's financial crisis and witnessing once-retired veterinarians picking up shifts, motivated Michael to take back control of his life.In 2012, Michael and his wife, Rosalie, began building their real estate portfolio while working in their respective careers. Eventually, this real estate portfolio allowed Michael to cut back his veterinary hours to part time. In 2018, he decided to take the leap into real estate investing full-time and explore new ways to be a part of the veterinary community.Michael believes that the greatest way veterinarians can combat burnout is by taking charge of their personal finances and aligning every aspect of their lives with their veterinary vision. He is the cofounder and cohost of The Veterinary Project podcast, which aims to help other veterinarians thrive in their careers and intentionally design more joyful, fulfilling lives.Michael lives with his wife, Rosalie, daughter, Riley, and son, Ethan, in Saskatoon,Saskatchewan, Canada.Learn more at his website, The Veterinary Project or follow him on Instagram!...Resources that we mentioned or used in this episode:You're Gonna Get Peed On by Dr. Michael BuggThe 5 Minute Journal from Intelligent ChangeThe Miracle Morning by Hal ElrodSet Boundaries, Find Peace by Nedra TawaabConnect with Stacey or find more from The Whole Veterinarian!www.thewholeveterinarian.comIG @thewholeveterinarianListen on your favorite podcast player hereThank you for your time and support!

AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Sarah Erickson from Feedlot Health Management Services Inc., by Telus Agriculture, in Alberta, Canada. Sarah is currently enrolled in the Master of Science in large animal clinical sciences at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, and hopes to obtain her veterinary degree after completion of her masters. Lameness is a significant issue in feedlot cattle accounting for approximately 30% of all treatments in feedlot cattle, second only to bovine respiratory disease, and affecting over 3% of Western Canadian feedlot cattle. Cattle affected by lameness weigh close to 50 lbs less than healthy pen mates, but the economic impact is also influenced by treatment costs, labor, mortality and salvage slaughter. We discuss the most common conditions causing lameness in feedlot cattle which include toe tip necrosis, foot rot, arthritis, laminitis and digital dermatitis. There are unique challenges in managing these disease in feedlot versus dairy cattle due to the differences in husbandry between the two industries, but in both circumstances, lameness in cattle impact health, production and welfare. Erickson reviews a recent study performed on over 1.7 million head of Western Canadian evaluating the epidemiology of digital dermatitis, foot rot and toe tip necrosis. She discusses the risk factors for each disease such as sourcing, age, sex, feedlot size and days on feed. Veterinarians can play an integral role in assisting feedlots with development of protocols for diagnosis and treatment of lameness conditions, reviewing pain management and euthanasia protocols for affect cattle, development of prevention programs, and evaluation of the incidence in client yards to improve prevention and treatment programs. If you are interested in lameness and want to volunteer, a great place to start is the AABP lameness committee which can be found on this page.
