But there are certain things I have experienced, just as a big black dude in this country, that I wouldn't want to have to talk to a son about. Like dad, why does everybody assume that I play football because I can afford to eat at nice restaurants? Why does everybody think I'm a rapper because I can shop at Neiman Marcus? Why don't people actually think I have a brain?” [25:57] “The pain, it sucks, but sometimes that pain is necessary to see who's really with you and what's really important to you.” [40:29] “People are interested in who you are, not who you think they want you to be.” Resources & Links Off The Cuff https://www.offthecuff.fm/ https://www.youtube.com/c/OffTheCuffwithDannyLoPriore https://www.instagram.com/1and1otc/ https://www.instagram.com/dannylopriore/ Joe Barksdale https://www.josephbarksdale.com https://www.instagram.com/jbdale72/
Joe Barksdale shares his story about a life that was forged and assembled by an abusive and neglectful family in Detroit, tested on football fields, and released in recording studios and on stage. While feeling so much pain and internal self-loathing, he talks about how he tolerated the social discomfort and loneliness of autism. He goes on to describe how he has endured his own darkness to add art to the world and create community which generated the discussion for s2. E7. N17. of the Otherness Podcast. This week, Todd interviews Joe Barksdale who is a comedian, musician, and author who was recently diagnosed with autism while struggling with a lifetime of crushing depression. Joe describes how the lens of autism has worsened his depression and feelings of hopelessness while he strives to create community and support through his music and comedy. Struggles can come in multiple ways for many to form the people we become. Autism can provide a unique lens which can magnify these struggles into more painful feelings that lead to desolation. Joe Barksdale shares about how he has lived a brave life through his childhood defined by abuse and neglect and time spent playing professional football. Barksdale shares how he wanted to be the best in a focused and concrete way that can be enhanced by autism. Despite his perceived success, Joe explains in this interview how he struggled with gripping depression and consistent suicidal thoughts. Joe talks about how he was an A student in high school who wanted to design the interior of cars before he embarked on his football career which was driven by his desire to show others that he could be the best at what he did. Joe talks about how he succeeded in the game of football, but did not like to be the center of attention. In this episode, Joe shares how he feels most comfortable when performing comedy and expressing his true self to others on stage. Joe goes on to describe how he wants to build a community that supports the creative output and compassion of others, particularly those affected by things with which he has struggled as a black man with mental illness and autism. Joe wants to call the community Moonbeam, which is the name of the first song he wrote for which he felt truly proud. This vision of community may embody Joe's living force which appears so rooted in darkness. The Otherness Podcast is exploring and engaging autism through experienced stories with Dr. Todd Peter Levine and is available on most places and sites where you like to listen to podcasts.*******Opening Theme Song Music Credits“Otherness Podcast Intro Theme Song and Music” by Nicholas BurlingCopyright 2021 Late Leopard Publishing/Nick Burling (ASCAP)Administered by Late Leopard Publishing (ASCAP)*******Closing Theme Song Music Credits“Otherness Podcast Outro Theme Song and Music” by Nicholas BurlingCopyright 2021 Late Leopard Publishing (ASCAP)Administered by late Leopard Publishing (ASCAP)*******

Listen to a new episode of PIVOT, a show brought to you by YNS Live with NFL Thread recorded live on Fireside with hosts Juliet Hahn and Cynthia Zordich featuring special guests Joe and Bri Barksdale. Singer, songwriter, and producer Joe Barksdale describes his musical path as beginning with “gospel, rap, soul, and R&B, the four major food groups for black, inner-city Detroit.” With a style fueled by an eclectic genre mix, influences included Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Sly, and the Family Stone, Teddy Pendergrass, and Kanye West. His unique sound smoothly blends aspects from blues, soul, jazz, rock, and more, creating an immersive experience at once both upbeat and up-close-and-personal — a captivating world spreading a message of love and unity, harmoniously uniting people through music. Joe's 2017 debut album, Butterflies, Rainbows & Moonbeams, was followed in rapid succession by Electric Soul (2019), produced by the legendary Narada Michael Walden, Sincerely (2020), R & B(eats) (2020), and most recently, 2021's The Kyber Tapes, an homage to his Star Wars Obsession. A passion for engineering led Barksdale to the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program at age 13. When that didn't work out, football was one of the few summer activity options available. All-American honors as a Cass Technical High School lineman led to scholarship offers, and acceptance of Louisiana State University's offer, enhanced by its engineering program. After starting on LSU's 2008 NCAA championship team, he played with the Raiders, Rams, Chargers, and Cardinals. Concluding an 8-year NFL run, Barksdale hung up his cleats in 2019 to pursue music full-time, settling in Austin, Texas with his wife Brionna and two young daughters. Depression, long-undiagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder, and a childhood peppered with abuse, rejection, and neglect fed a strong inner critic clamoring to divert Barksdale from his goals. In his youth, football and music lessons fostered resilience, while therapy as an adult re-channeled his energies to focus on excellence. After the passing of Cass coach and mentor Charleston Fobbs in 2013, Rams coach Jeff Fisher encouraged rekindling his love for music as a creative outlet to cope with grief. Music became a voice previously missing from his life, with professional instruction fine-tuning his multiple gifts. Concurrently, he fosters awareness to tackle the stigma surrounding mental illness — including publicly sharing his own experience of 20+ years of silently suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts — to encourage others to seek help. Focused, driven, and competitive in all pursuits, Barksdale is committed to emerging as his generation's premier guitar player, eyeing Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Refusing constraint to a single creative outlet, he's an avid journaler and poet, and relishes his role as Tech Lord of the Sith, producing quick, irreverent product review videos. Simultaneously enamored with comedy — citing Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, and Patrice O'Neal as primary influences — he includes the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor among future ambitious goals. A dedicated artisan defying singular categorization, Barksdale is confidently making his mark across a far-reaching creative galaxy, forcefully checking multiple boxes along his journey. Animal addict, self-starter, espresso shot lover, entrepreneur, and relocation specialist. Brionna Barksdale likes to say she's in the sweet spot between productivity and creativity, and she uses those attributes to help craft solutions and experiences both virtually and in real life. As a wife and mother of four, two daughters, and two Dobermans Pinschers @aria_and_anikan - Brionna is the CEO/founder of Top-Tier Event Group. Brionna's latest association is joining The Pet Summit team as Operations Director. Although Brionna may not be a social media influencer, she inspires people every day by being authentic with everyone she encounters. Reach out to Joe and Bri at TheDavidBrand.com or via Instagram. Remarkable Quotes Joe Barksdale: “Football was the first time I was around adults that were happy to see me. I fell in love with being good. I fell in love with being the best at what I do. It was the competitive in me that allowed me to be good. Being on the football field gave me a purpose and that I deserved to be on the planet. I wasn't just taking, I was giving.” “I was never passionate about football. I was passionate about being good at the game. The reason why I wanted to be good is for the accolades because I wanted a reason to prove that I was meant to be alive.” “I know that the best 'ME' that I can be will be the best 'ME' for my family.” Bri Barksdale: “You can either be stuck in traffic or the reason for the traffic jam. So you gotta be thankful that you're just stuck in traffic.” “It's one thing to pivot. It's another thing to pivot when your plan doesn't go seamlessly and there's a lot of pivoting that goes on.” “I wrote down the words because I'm more of a lyrics person. He [Joe Barksdale] is more of the music person.” Sponsor The YNS Live With NFL Thread Super Bowl Experience is sponsored by Shutterstock Editorial. Joe Barksdale is a former NFL player who won a National Championship with the LSU Tigers in 2008. But he'd rather talk about his second career as a musician - and his third as a comedian. Joe dropped five albums in 2021 alone, and he has another on the way. When Joe does talk sport, it generally centers on advocacy for athletes struggling with mental illness. After all, Joe is on the autism spectrum, and he bravely shares in our conversation that every morning, he wakes up thinking about taking his own life. In this episode of Six Weeks to Fitness, I'm joined by former professional football player, Joe Barksdale. During his career, Joe played for the St. Louis Rams, Los Angeles Chargers and Arizona Cardinals. He is also an accomplished musician, mental health advocate and comedian. During the interview, Joe will discuss his childhood, growing up in Detroit, Michigan, and the many challenges he faced as a child. Joe didn't grow up playing sports, and it wasn't until high school, that he decided to try out for the football team. Joe Barksdale's NFL career lasted about 8 years and when I asked him why he left the NFL, his response was “I got tired of losing.” Joe speaks freely about his NFL career, but it's a career that he would like to put behind him. He is most happy about his career as a performance artist and a stand-up comedian. It was hard not to laugh at Joe's many anecdotes during the interview. He is a natural-born comedian always laughing and joking during the interview while making his point. Mental health is a major topic of which Joe speaks very candidly about, having dealt with depression and sexual abuse as a child. The COVID-19 pandemic also impacted Joe's post-NFL plans. He left the NFL to pursue his aspirations as a performance artist, but when the country shut down and went into quarantine mode, those plans were thwarted, and he found himself mentally and emotionally depressed with nowhere to go and questions on how he will feed his family. Weight gain was also a byproduct of the quarantine. Barksdale's playing weight while in the NFL was 325 pounds on his 6' 5” frame, but during the quarantine, his weight increased, which added to his depression. At least in the NFL, he was able to work out, exercise and travel on a regular basis, during the quarantine, all that has changed. Fortunately, he came across the Centr App, a 10-week exercise and nutrition program created by Chris Hemsworth, the Australian actor, who played in the movie series “Thor.” With the help of this exercise program and the nutritious meal plans it provides, Joe is feeling much better physically and mentally. He has lost weight and his body is much leaner than it has been in years. Joe will tell you that he is a work in progress and that he is taking it one day at a time.

This week we are talking to Joe Barksdale. Now you may or may not know that name. He was an offensive tackle in the NFL who, upon his retirement from game, decided to become a musician and a comedian. His Star Wars connection is that one of his first albums is called The Kyber Tapes and it was recorded with a previous Around the Galaxy Guest, impressionist Kevin Cabral. Joe is a lifelong Star Wars fan who is also autistic and is very open about his challenges with mental illness. He is also one of the funniest guests we've ever had on the show. We also tackle some real issues and his point of view. The language is uncensored, the conversation is real, and the interview does at times go a little off the rails.Kyber Tapes: https://open.spotify.com/album/0ZdfLkcAkdUMV33OxELTx4?si=MhEre7sTTzG9OgWXDdGVlQ&dl_branch=1www.ATGcast.comPatreon.com/ATGcastTwitter.com/ATGcastInstagram.com/ATGcastFacebook.com/ATGcastTikTok.com/ATGcast

On episode 12 of Behind the Mind, former NFL Offensive-Lineman Joe Barksdale joined the show to discuss his life-long struggle with depression. Joe and I had an awesome conversation and I really enjoyed learning about his story. He really is a complex person with a very insightful mind. He is another shining example that we all go through something, no matter how successful we appear on the surface. I did not expect Kobe Bryant to come up in this episode, but Joe brought up meeting him in 2018, and how Kobe influenced him to stop playing football and follow his passion for making music. Joe has already released an album and says that music has changed his life. Joe will soon be launching his own mental health blog to contribute to the conversation about mental health.Hope you enjoy!

In this episode, Al interviews Joe Barksdale, NFL offensive tackle (recorded 3-13-19). Joe returns to the show approximately one year after his first interview on The Depression Files. Being in a much better place mentally than he was one year ago, Joe discusses the abuse from his parents that led him to a first suicide attempt at the very young age of nine years old. Joe talks stigma, football, and music. Hear about the therapy he's been going to for the past year that includes Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and how it has supported him in working through some more recent trauma that Joe has experienced. I would like to note that two days after my interview with Joe, he called me to inform me of a brain scan that confirmed his belief that his depression has absolutely & conclusively no link to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) whatsoever. He was informed by the doctors that if they were not informed of his status as a professional football player, they would never have guessed it from his scans. Joe's belief that CTE has no connection to his depression has been an important piece of Joe's advocacy.
