How to Defeat the Blank Page: A Writer's Greatest EnemyAh, the blank page. That cold, unfeeling void staring back at you, silently judging your every hesitation. It's the sworn enemy of every writer—from seasoned novelists to first-time scribblers—and yet, it's where every masterpiece begins. How cruel. If you've ever stared at an empty page and felt a mix of dread and frustration, you're not alone. Every writer, no matter how experienced, has faced the suffocating silence of the blank page. But here's the good news: the blank page isn't invincible. In fact, it's just waiting for you to take the first step. And that's what we're here to talk about today.Recently, we released something very different: a mini-episode video called “The Blank Page: Enemy of the Creative Soul.” It's a funny, relatable take on the eternal battle between writers and their greatest nemesis. If you haven't seen it yet, we've brought it to life with humor, a touch of drama, and some surprisingly practical advice. (Check it out and let us know what you think!)But for those of you who prefer the written word, let's dive deeper into how you can tackle the blank page and start turning your ideas into words.1. Why Is the Blank Page So Scary? The blank page can feel like a mirror for all our fears as writers:* What if my idea isn't good enough?* What if I'm not good enough?* What if I write 3,000 words only to realize it's utter rubbish? It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the weight of expectation, but here's the truth: the blank page doesn't care about perfection. In fact, its job is to be filled—with anything. Your job is to give it something to hold, no matter how messy, silly, or imperfect.2. The Secret to Conquering the Blank PageThere's no single magic formula to overcome the fear of starting, but here are some tried-and-true strategies that work for us:Start Small and SillyNot every word you write has to be gold. In fact, most first drafts are pure chaos—and that's okay. Write something ridiculous if you need to. For example:The avocado king declared war on the banana republic. It was a battle no one saw coming.See? It's silly, but it's writing! Sometimes the act of putting any words on the page is enough to break through the fear.Lower the StakesStop thinking about writing as “creating a masterpiece.” Think of it as an experiment, a doodle, a rough sketch. Give yourself permission to write badly. It's easier to edit a terrible sentence than to edit nothing at all.Set a TimerUse the Pomodoro Technique or set a timer for 10 minutes. Tell yourself, “I only have to write for this long.” Often, you'll find that starting is the hardest part, and once you're rolling, the words come more easily.Ask QuestionsWhen you're stuck, start by asking questions about your story. What does your character want? What's the worst thing that could happen to them today? If you're not writing fiction, ask yourself what problem you're trying to solve for your reader.3. A Writer's Pep TalkIf you're feeling overwhelmed, remember this: Every writer you admire has felt exactly how you feel right now. Even the greats have stared at the blank page and thought, I have no idea what I'm doing. But they pushed through. They started with one messy sentence, then another, and another. That's all writing is—a series of imperfect sentences that somehow come together to make something meaningful. You don't have to write a masterpiece today. You don't even have to write well. You just have to write.4. What Did You Think? This mini-episode was a bit of an experiment for us, blending humor with advice to tackle one of the most universal struggles writers face. Did it resonate with you? Did it make you laugh? Did it help you stare down your blank page with a little more courage? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Should we create more of these mini-episodes? What other writing challenges would you like us to tackle (with a bit of humor, of course)? As always, thank you for being part of our writing community. Now go forth and fill that blank page—even if it's just with your grocery list. It's a start.Happy writing!Subscribe for More Fun and Advice: This is a public episode. We think we know what it means to “be creative” but do we really? Or have we been subtly indoctrinated by a culture that so worships productivity and achievement that we have missed what creativity actually is, what it means, and why it matters? In this season of the podcast, I'll ask those questions and more. I'll find some answers, I'm sure, and leave others to a mystery I may never fully understand. I hope you'll come along with me for the ride. In today's episode, I unpack the symbolism of the “blank page” and how when we set out to make something, we start with nothing. If creativity is about making something from nothing, then how we view emptiness, silence, boredom and the heavy feeling of “nothing to say” matters. If you've ever wanted to create something — a business, a family, a community, a way of life — but had no idea where to start, this episode is for you. In this week's episode of Fully Booked, Craig and Roland are joined by Emmy Award-winning screenwriter Zack Morrison for a hard look at the challenges of breaking into the television industry and the unconventional path he's taken in trying to sell his own comedy pilot. Despite his impressive credentials, including work on shows like SNL and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Zack reveals that in today's market, even the most talented writers need more than just a great script to succeed. He discusses the importance of initiative and creativity in transforming an idea from paper to screen, and how essential it is to go beyond traditional methods. Zack shares his unique journey, illustrating how success often requires creating your own opportunities rather than waiting for the industry to come to you. He's not just theorizing—Zack put his filmmaking skills to the test by independently shooting the pilot for his script, and he offers a candid behind-the-scenes look at how he made it happen. Through engaging anecdotes and actionable advice, Zack underscores the importance of adaptability and creativity in standing out from the crowd, ultimately encouraging listeners to take control of their creative destinies. When starting a new project and hearing about constraints, it can feel like they are already limiting our ability to pursue our passion and creativity. However, I believe that constraints are not something to complain about. They help us make decisions, prioritize, and move forward. Constraints are like rules that guide us, almost like a how-to book. Andrew and I both agree that having complete freedom might actually freeze us. Too many options can be overwhelming, and without any limits or rules, it's hard to know which direction to take. Even with the same constraints, different architects can come up with multiple solutions because we all have different values and priorities. Constraints shape our creativity and force us to think critically. Budget jump to 7:00 Scope Limitation: A tight budget can limit the overall scope of the project, potentially necessitating compromises on materials, finishes, and features. Quality Compromises: Lower budget constraints might force the selection of cheaper, less durable materials, which could affect the building's longevity and performance. Design Adjustments: Innovative design solutions might be required to meet budget constraints, which can lead to creative outcomes but also might limit some design aspirations. Project Delays: Insufficient budget can lead to delays if additional funds need to be sourced or if cost overruns occur. In my conversation with Andrew, we spent a fair amount of time talking about budget as possibly the most critical constraint that owners and architect have to address. Many architects, myself included, fantasize about the ideal scenario where there is unlimited time, budget, and creative freedom. However, I have come to realize that this notion is neither realistic nor desirable. Constraints are essential and beneficial, as they provide a necessary framework that guides the design process and helps prioritize decisions. At first glance, constraints might seem limiting, but they actually facilitate creativity and problem-solving. Constraints can include budget limitations, client requirements, existing structures, and site conditions. Andrew was of the opinion that having too much freedom could be paralyzing, with endless possibilities leading to indecision. I used residential projects to illustrate how constraints function - mostly because it is easier to explain because residential projects typically have fewer constraints. Building a new house on an empty lot might seem closer to having a blank page, but it still comes with constraints like zoning laws and environmental regulations. On the other hand, renovations and additions have more obvious constraints due to the existing structure. However, these constraints help narrow down options and inform design choices. Time jump to 27:14 Accelerated Schedule: Tight deadlines might require an accelerated construction schedule, which can increase costs and potentially affect the quality of workmanship. Limited Design Development: Insufficient time can limit the design development phase,
You sit down at your desk, you turn your computer on, maybe you sharpen your pencils, you lay out your rolls of trace and your sharpie pens – whatever your creative process - and you are about to start work solving the problems at hand … But where do you start? Sitting before you are all the normal tools and a big fat blank piece of paper. This is a moment where you have to make a make a decision on what happens next. Where do you start? How do you set the priorities to the issues you will be addressing? Andrew and I are going to discuss the process of when you start, what happens next. Welcome to Episode 157: Blank Page versus Project Constraints. How do you identify and develop the ideas that generate a multi-billion-dollar business using strategic thinking? In this episode, Rich sits down with Bill Harris, former CEO of TurboTax, PayPal and Intuit, and current founder of Evergreen Money. Bill is a prolific founder and “ideas guy” who has spent 30 years building and leading companies at the intersection of investing, tax and technology. Bill shares his framework for startup strategy, his advice for interacting with the board, and the competitive advantage of starting with nothing. ---------Key Quotes:“The two most important words in my life are purpose and curiosity, and it's a flare and focus function.”“What was important in order to change my life that way was to admit to myself that there were things that I was not good at, and some of those things that I was not good at were central to my understanding of myself.”“If you're going to start a business…, it better be new, different, and better.”“That is my competitive advantage. I have nothing. And having nothing in a period of rapidly accelerating change is an incredible strategic advantage if you know what to do with it.”“I have been blessed by being pretty deep in financial technology, but always being able to find the next vertical or the next use case where I had not done it before. I could see enough into the process to understand what might be done and how it could be improved. Then with inspiration, you start to focus on it and hone the idea.”“If you're in trouble, then you have the opportunity to really change the business, the basic foundation and DNA of a corporation.”“..starting young companies–going zero to one–strategy, is really product strategy. We're thinking of putting a product together and then how do we go to market and who's our customer base and what are their needs and what is our business model?”“I'm talking from my own perspective, which is a startup. You can never focus enough. You can never shave off enough bells and whistles. You can never identify your customer sharply enough. You can never focus your efforts of yourself and your company enough. You have to pick the single most important thing and get it to the single best segment of people who will appreciate it.”“The biggest failure is when management feels that it has to go to boards with all the questions answered.”“If it's a highly fragmented market, or if you are a new player doing something different, which just means that you're going to be tiny in relation to everybody else who's out there, competition is meaningless.”Practice Makes Profit segment: A key criterion of strategy is the trade-off. A trade-off is made when you focus on one area and intentionally exclude others. A method for practicing trade-offs is to use a Trade-off Matrix. Consider where you and your team allocate your resources—time, talent, people, budget—and then evaluate your current tasks, initiatives, meetings, etc. and determine if they should be placed in one of four quadrants: Eliminate, Decrease, Increase, or Create. As Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix said, “If you are not genuinely pained by the risk involved in your strategic choices, then it's not much of a strategy.”The League of Strategic Minds segment [listener question]: What are the primary steps in developing a strategic plan? There are five steps in the strategy development process: 1) Discovery 2) Strategic Thinking 3) Strategic Planning 4) Strategy Rollout 5) Strategy Tune-up Winsight: Idea for Advantage segment: Richard Branson, billionaire founder of the Virgin Group said: “The number one thing I take with me is a notebook. I could never have built the Virgin Group into the size it is without those few bits of paper. If you have a thought and don't write it down, by tomorrow morning, it may be gone forever.”Where are you recording your insights each day and how often are you going back to review them?---------Time stamps:(1:41) Deep Dive Interview with Bill Harris(47:32) Practice Makes Profit(49:21) League of Strategic Minds (51:50) Winsights, Ideas for Advantage ---------Links:Submit a question for Rich to the League of Strategic Minds Bill Harris LinkedInThe Investment Tax Guide, by Bill HarrisRich Horwath on LinkedInRich Horwath on YouTubeRich Horwath on InstagramStrategic Thinking Institute WebsiteInc. Email marketing is a game-changer for petpreneurs! But when it comes to automated emails, many of us are stuck thinking that only means a welcome email sequence. In this episode with copywriter Sara Gillis, we're taking a look at two powerful types of email sequences that you don't want to neglect: nurture sequences and launch sequences. These strategic messages can transform your email marketing, keeping your audience engaged at different stages of your pet business. One common roadblock Sara and I talk about in this episode is the fear of annoying your list with too many emails. But let's flip that script! If you don't reach out regularly, you're essentially ghosting your subscribers. Consistent communication is key! And that's where email sequences come in handy. If you get stuck when it comes to actually writing emails for your business, Sara shares some great hacks to beat writer's block and give your messaging a personal touch. Speaking of personal touch, Sara has a fun Brand Voice Quiz on her website that can help you identify your unique brand voice and provide prompts for your email and social media content. I took the quiz myself and discovered my brand voice is Charming and Joyful. What's yours?

Research is a conversation. Every scholar must become a professional writer. But how do we learn these things? Most graduate school programs do not include a writing course and books on how to write are read even less than other types of books. Is good writing maybe all either genetics or just experience? Or does it depend on how we approach research, either phenomena- or theory-driven? We think both things matter – but there are also some practical steps people can take to get their writing going and maintain the flow of writing. As usual, the references to readings we mention are listed on .

Bible Reading: Romans 6:12-18, 22"Hi, Mom," said Taden as he came into the house. "Want to see the picture I painted at school today?" He held out a paper with a scene of a lake and trees, with mountains in the background."This is really good!" exclaimed Mom. "You're a wonderful painter."Taden beamed. "I think I'm going to be an artist when I grow up. I love to paint." He went to a drawer and took out a fresh piece of paper and some paints."I think that would be great." Mom pointed to the paper Taden had spread out on the kitchen table. "Have you ever looked at your blank paper and wondered what it will look like when you're done painting?""Of course. I always have something in mind when I start painting." Taden grinned at his mom. "But it doesn't always turn out the way I imagined it. Sometimes I do a good job, but other times I mess it up."Mom nodded. "Our lives are like that blank paper, and our choices are like the brush that applies the colors to the page, making something beautiful--or a mess!""But the brush doesn't paint by itself," said Taden. "It's the artist who chooses the colors and paints the picture. Whether it turns out good or bad depends on the artist.""That's right," said Mom. "In our life pictures, we can either make ourselves the artists and paint things our own way, or we can trust God to be the artist holding the brush and let Him guide us and shape our lives."Taden looked at the blank page. "I never thought about my life like that," he said thoughtfully."When we trust Jesus and give Him control of our life picture, He promises to make it beautiful," said Mom. "That doesn't mean our lives will be easy or that we won't still sin and make mistakes--we'll sometimes try to take control of the brush and do things our own way. But when we do, Jesus forgives us and paints over our mistakes. He promises to help us make good choices and love others the way He does. He's the greatest Artist there is, and when we give Him control of our lives, He will make them into masterpieces."- Mary Rose PearsonHow About You?Who is painting the picture of your life?
