Episode 43 - Murdock and Marvel: 1996 Part 2 Well, here we are, Duane. At the End of Days. I have been promising you that everything was going to explode eventually. And finally we have arrived. Welcome to the fateful year 1996, when Marvel came crashing down. This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 1996. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #348-359, Punisher #4, What if…? #83, Marvel versus DC / DC versus Marvel #2-3, Green Goblin #6 and 12, Doom 2099 #40-42, Over the Edge #6 and 10, Wolverine #103-104, New Warriors #73, Spider-Man Unlimited #13, Essential Wolverine #1, Essential X-Men #1, Spider-Man #74, Elektra Megazine #1-2, Essential Spider-Man #1 and Age of Innocence: The Rebirth of Iron Man, Spider-Man's Greatest Team-Ups and Elektra Lives Again graphic novels Writing: J.M. DeMatteis (348-350), John Rozum (351), Ben Rabb (352), Karl Kesel (353-357), Joe Kelly (358-359) Pencils: Cary Nord (348-349, 353-357), Ron Wagner (350), Shawn McManus (351-352), Pasqual Ferry (358), Nord and Larry Hama (359) Inks: Bill Reinhold (348, 350), Al Williamson (349), Shawn McManus (351-352), Matt Ryan (353-357, 359), Pasqual Ferry (358) The year begins with Matt trying to reconcile his recent identity crisis while Foggy is angry about the secret he's finally learned. Matt tries visiting with his mother Maggie, but it's his old Mentor Stick that helps him – though in the process he ends up taking on the Chaste. Foggy and Matt begin practicing law together again. From there, things return to normal (or at least what's normal for Daredevil or Matt Murdock), He takes out Agent Vice who's extorting money from other criminals. Daredevil must take on Mastermind who is also Matt Murdock's client. In June we get a new creative team that was teased at the end of issue 352. Karl Kesel and Cary Nord. We also get a re-imagined Mr. Hyde from John Romita Jr. Hyde seems to be totally unhinged (with an equally terrifying look). Daredevil confronts Hyde in an old Osborn warehouse where a woman has been murdered. Hyde continues to act crazy and is ultimately arrested. During this issue Foggy and Matt (mostly Matt) are asked to partner with hotshot lawyer Rosalind (Razor) Sharpe. Sharpe tells Matt privately that the two are a package deal. She doesn't just want Foggy. Foggy seemed weirdly eager to join her so Matt accepts. And as a first case under the new partnership, Sharpe was Murdock to represent Mr. Hyde. At first, Murdock doesn't want to do it, but after meeting with Hyde – Matt doesn't think he killed the girl. The leads to Daredevil taking on Pyro and looking for clues at the warehouse – with the help of Misty Knight – which leads to a secret tunnel and a group of criminals called the Enforcers and their newest member the Eel – who captures our hero. The story ends when Daredevil escapes and captures the Eel and presents the Eel to the courtroom waiting for the trial of Mr. Hyde to start. The year ends with two standalone stories that have a much different look and feel from the rest of the year. In the first, Daredevil takes on Mysterio who's working on a super-hero insurance scam. This fun story will be our spotlight story for the week. In the second, we see a night of Daredevil fighting crime while Karen Page talks to people of New York about their thoughts on Daredevil (now that the Fantastic Four and Avengers are gone) during her late-night radio call in show. Hello and welcome to the ZimmCast. In this episode we're going to learn about special sale of agriculture focused website domains being sold by Dave Larson of Larson Ent. LLC. There are a number of categories and I'll let him tell you about what is available. After that I'm going to share my wrap-up interview of the 2023 NAMA Fall Conference with John Rozum, AEM and current President of NAMA. It was a well attended and successful conference. I'll be in the woods starting this weekend for a few days for my annual deer hunt and I'm looking forward to getting some more venison in the freezer. Can't wait. That's the ZimmCast for this week. I hope you enjoyed it and thank you for listening.
In this episode, we had a conversation with John Rozum about his experience producing the record-breaking The Utility Expo, fueled by federal funding from historic and transformative legislation passed in 2021. In fact, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) is expected to increase federal spending on infrastructure by about $550 billion over the next decade, nearly all through grants to state and local governments, which own much of the nation's infrastructure. The biennial trade show returned to Louisville, Ky., with more than 21,000 utility construction professionals from all 50 states and 60 countries. The trade show, held Sept. 26-28 at the Kentucky Exposition Center, featured more than 900 exhibitors showcasing the latest products and solutions for the utility construction industry. Exhibits covered a record 1.5 million net square feet, and the event featured equipment test drives and interactive product demonstrations. The Utility Expo is owned by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers, a North America-based international trade group representing off-road equipment manufacturers and suppliers with more than 1,000 companies and more than 200 product lines in the agriculture and construction-related industry sectors worldwide. The equipment manufacturing industry in the United States supports 2.3 million jobs and contributes roughly $316 billion to the economy every year. In addition to The Utility Expo, AEM also owns and produces CONEXPO-CON/AGG, The International Fluid Power Exposition (IFPE), and the Commodity Classic. We talked about: How The Utility Expo increased attendance by 30% over its last show in 2021 and by 10% over its previous attendance record in 2019 How the biennial show grew from 1.3 to 1.5 million square feet of exhibit space The new community zone that debuted in 2023 Why the show has made its home in Louisville since 1987 What's trending in utility equipment: Sustainable equipment and accessories The state of the utility industry: Strong due to infrastructure investments, which are expected to increase in coming years And so much more! Podcast host Danica Tormohlen also shared the top five new stories from Trade Show News Network, Exhibit News Now and Corporate Event News that were published in mid September 2023. Our guest John Rozum, Senior Director, Ag & Utility Exhibitions and Events for the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), is a self-described “event nerd” with more than two decades of experience leading some of the largest trade shows in the United States. He plays a critical role in the planning and execution of industry-leading trade shows such as The Utility Expo, CONEXPO-CON/AGG and The International Fluid Power Exposition (IFPE), as well as the Commodity Classic. Rozum is currently serving as chairperson of the Major American Trade Show Organizers (MATSO) and president of the National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA). Rozum joined AEM in 2013 as the organization's attendee acquisition manager, and he currently serves as Show Director for The Utility Expo and IFPE. Prior to joining AEM, he worked in several sales and event management consulting roles, including more than a decade spent leading the trade show for the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. john earned a Bachelor of Science in both Ag Journalism and Poultry Science from the University of Wisconsin. Julia Raul returns to join Diabolu Frank for the finale of our JLMay 2023 / Milestone Media trilogy of episodes. Since the previous shows tended toward paired character spotlights, we have to take a kitchen sink approach now, looking at the first year-plus of the series Blood Syndicate & Icon and the earliest Shadow Cabinet, including its launch event "Shadow War." We also return to Hardware and Static through to the intracompany event "Worlds Collide," restoring our theme and mandate by mingling in with DC's Superman Family of titles (well, the creative teams that aren't afraid to drive through the dark side of town, anyway.) Along the way, we talk Vixen, Black Canary, Green Lantern John Stewart, Steel, and more. In case you missed it, these episodes have covered every story from the trade paperback The Brave and the Bold: Milestone, which means it's time to visit the early issues of Xombi, including David Kim's team-up with the Crispus Allen incarnation of The Spectre from The Brave and the Bold #25 in the story "Annihilating Angel" by John Rozum & Scott Hampton.JLMay 2023 will cover the third volume of DC Comics' The Brave and the Bold (2007-2010), which ran 35 issues. There's only 31 days in the month, so we'll run a list of all the issues with links to the podcasts intent on covering them until the actual shows turn up, individual or in groups...Spill Some Blood!!!**across social media only. In this episode of The DL, Diesel Laptops Founder and CEO Tyler Robertson is joined by John Rozum, Director of Ag & Utility Exhibitions and Events at Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) to talk all about expos, recent changes, what to expect in the future and what AEM does. AEM provides services for companies that manufacture equipment, product and services used worldwide in the Construction, Agriculture, Forestry, Mining, and Utility industries, as well as a wide array of benefits that help members. John explains how Covid-19 was devastating to the events and hospitality industries, however, it has changed the way the industry thinks and how they do things, regarding contingencies, contracting, and communications. As some shows have moved to virtual, they do not allow for the same tactile experience that a live event would, so shows are evolving to meet new needs. In the future we can expect larger spaces, improved experiences, etc., starting with The Utility Expo, coming up September 28-30, 2021. Other changes to expect to from exhibitors will be innovative autonomous and semi-autonomous equipment, as manufacturers improve and build upon the technology. It's just not diagnostics, it is diagnostics done right. Go find your right tools and equipment that you need for your business. A great place to do that is at The Utility Expo. I really dug getting to play with Clive Barker's creations and had even written a tie in comic detailing the origins of the lament configurations (the deadly puzzle boxes) and further three stories which never saw print because the series was cancelled before they could be run. I'd love to be able to return to Hellraiser some day. From The first of the stories I wrote for this series, "Homecoming," was also the first narrative comic book story I wrote for publication. I worked really hard to make it tight, seamless, and brutal, only to see something published which represented the story I turned in only in the most superficial level, completely removing the brutal ending and replacing it with one of redemption and responsibility. The Cenobite in my story, was really a cenobite pet, who escapes hell, and his masters, and heads home to the family he left on earth decades ago. This pet was taken to hell as a child, because his older brother sacrificed him to the Cenobites rather than go himself, as was supposed to happen. When the cenobites come to retrieve their pet, they demand to take the older brother back as well for their trouble. In my version the older brother surrenders his young son instead, remaining a coward and never taking responsibility for his actions. In the altered version, he owns up for what he has done and goes along himself. I was pissed, and disowned the story after this, despite some lovely art by Mark Texiera. I later wondered if maybe my script, being my first was bad and required the changes, but having found it in my files years later, so that it still held up, and remains stronger than what saw print. My next story fared a lot better, though I had to fight for it. From Gray Morrow died of a self inflicted gunshot. He suffered from Parkinson's disease.Morrow was nominated for the Hugo Award for best professional artist in 1966,[30] 1967,[31] and 1968. Carlos Gabriel Ruiz joins me to discuss The Flash: Time Flies, written by John Rozum and drawn by the underrated artist in all of American comics, Seth Fisher. Time Flies is a short story about The Flash traveling to a strange and distant future in order to save an Air Force test pilot and prevent him from destroying the entire universe. We spend most of the conversation talking about Fisher's incredibly unique and detailed line work and quirky artistic vision. Check out Carlos' comics here:https://www.braincloudcomics.com/http://inkanddrinkcomics.com/
