For our latest installment of B-cember — and our last episode of Spooky Tuesday until 2024 — we decided to spice up the season with Santa's Slay (2005), a holiday horror featuring wrestling star Goldberg as Jolly Old Saint Nick. There's no better way to celebrate, so join us as we close out the year with a Father Christmas who could clothesline Mannheim and his signature Steamroller move with ease. Wow, folks! It's the last YKS before Christmas! Hopefully you have laid the 80s horror VHS tapes out by the old tube tv, taken one bite of the Delta-8 edibles and placed them on the Elvira plate, and filled up a cup with sour Gatorade. Soon, two annoying guys will be knocking on your front door asking if they can come in and use your bathroom! Will they be leaving presents? Perhaps! That depends on how you feel about a VR archery set, a new way to open up plastic bags, and a hat with a QR code on it that maybe orders a type of drink for you? Not sure. Who bought this crap, my weird uncle!? My uncles are all cool actually I just meant sometimes people have weird ones. I don't know. Uncles take a beating around the holidays, don't they? We're checking in with Dr. Jake Kleinmahon, Pediatric Cardiologist at Oschner's Hospital for Children, for another edition of Dr. Jake's Take. He's got some really important bits of holiday health info, like how to calm stressed out kids (and parents!) during the end of the year chaos. Then Dr. Jake spills the tea on why parents of teenagers should be alarmed about a new 'Loaded Tea' our high schoolers are getting into. It's just too much caffeine, y'all! Then I sit down with my friend, our beloved local NOLA Anglican Dominican Friar, Brother Todd van Alstyne. Not only does he have a complete heart of gold, he's actually a lot like the real Santa Claus! Brother Todd tells us the real story of Jolly Old Saint Nick, how he's inspired by the classic tale of the real man who became a saint, and how Brother Todd tries to embody Santa's values year-round in New Orleans. Santa Claus. For most of the year he and his helpers toil and on one day, Christmas Eve, he and his reindeer race the globe delivering toys, candy and things to good children the world over. In this collection of short fiction, a letter and two poems, Mark Redfield narrates three American voices on the subject of Jolly Old Saint Nick. “Letter From Santa Clause” by Mark Twain is and actual letter that Twain wrote and left one Christmas morning to his daughter. An expression of a father's love. In the delightful poem “The Boy Who Laughed at Santa Claus” American humorist Ogden Nash tells the story of a very naughty boy from Baltimore who wasn't anybody's idea of a gift. And from weird tales author H. P. Lovecraft comes a poem surprising in it's joyous holiday spirit, “Good St. Nick”. It's a good time to believe in Santa Claus. And what of Rudolph? We conclude the program with composer Jennifer Rouse's arrangement of Johnny Mark's popular song, which she calls “Rudolph's Nightmare” ! Thank you for listening, and subscribing! Face it, 'tis the season where our waistlines expand, and before you know it, Jolly Old Saint Nick is going to chastise you for eating all of those Christmas Cookies. If you haven't guessed, today's episode is all about food. Yes, we need foods to survive. But, given it is fall (for most of us), we wondered what some comfort foods you enjoy are. Whether you're into casserole, er... hotdish, or you just like spaghetti... um, now I'm hungry so I forgot where this sentence was going. Also, why do cats and dogs love stealing our seats? Think about it, you get up to eat comfort food and come back to find your pooch or your floof on your spot. There are reasons they love to steal seats, and one of them may be nefarious! Find out some good recipes in this episode -not- brought to you by Better Homes and Gardens. Look at that, we've graduated from cats to food now. This podcast is something else.
In this episode we recognize the End of Ordinary Time and the end of Season One of Saints Preserve Us. Along the way we acknowledge The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe and discuss a little celebration that happens around his birth, which was overshadowed this year by our grander celebration of Michaelmas. We also highlight some other December Saints, most notably Jolly Old Saint Nick and learn how New York City invented Christmas as we know it today to stop the Irish from getting drunk and running wild in the streets. We recount the horrific details of the tragic death of teen martyr Saint Eulalia and wonder why so many stories of Saints from December involve people being put in barrels. And finally Sean shares a memory from his childhood of a special feast that used to be celebrated on January first but now must never be spoken of under penalty of excommunication. It's been a wild and wonderful first season of Saints Preserve Us and we want to thank all of our listeners and our esteemed guests. It is time to ring the bell on another year from hell It's time to finally slow down, sleep and lay But don't relax just yet, you see I have a bet That 2021 still has a curveball to send your way Just as you were feeling kind of sappy, overall, just all-round happy A demon in disguise comes to make you pay You see Jolly Old Saint Nick has been replaced by a giant prick And he is here to once again ruin Christmas day. Sadistic Santa has arrived and most will not survive The sack of nasty pressies he keeps upon his sleigh so take your Xmas cheer and shove it in your ear Because that's not what sadistic Santa wants to portray. Crying, tears and rage make Sadistic Santa take the stage In this years Christmas theatre stage play In the end, you cry and curse, you thought your year could not get worse But you forgot Sadistic Santa had the final say. Do You Hear What I Hear? Some Jingle Bell-y laughs and minds being (snow)blown. That’s right, It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Great Branding and in this episode Allie and Lyndsay brandsplain all of the strategies and tactics that make the holiday branding so compelling...and how you can incorporate them into your business year-round. With just a week to go until Christmas, this week’s episode is a special one. Santa Claus was obviously my first pick for our Christmas episode, but poor wifi connection in the North Pole prevented him from joining the Zoom call. Luckily, I was instructed to speak with someone who knows more about Christmas than Jolly Old Saint Nick himself! Dr Bowler – the world’s foremost authority on the history of Christmas - joins me all the way from snowy Canada for an in-depth conversation about ALL things Christmas. He is the author of many Christmas books including: The World Encyclopedia of Christmas, Santa Claus: A Biography and The World’s Greatest Christmas Stories. Dr Bowler shares a series of fascinating facts about the world’s most celebrated holiday, the history of the mince pie, and confirms how Covid-19 will affect Santa’s plans for delivering gifts on Christmas Eve. If you have ever been curious about the origins of Christmas traditions, then you’ll love this episode.
Jolly Old Saint Nick. The Man with the Bag. Kris Kringle. Whatever you call him the world of cinema has many depictions of the head elf at the North Pole. Join co-hosts Lauren and Ryan Tocci as they break down their top five favorite Santas, with a dash of honorable mentions, and a sprinkle of some dishonorable ones too.
In this episode of the Manlihood ManCast, Josh Hatcher talks about some of the manliest history about Saint Nicholas. Santa Claus may be shrouded in myth, but the real Man in Red was quite the manly man. According to history and legend, there are a number of stories that paint “Jolly Old Saint Nick” in a slightly different light than we see on the Christmas Cards. That Time Santa Claus hit a heretic in the face. That time he saved three daughters from being sold into prostitution That time he solved a grisly murder and did a miracle That time he told a storm at sea to take chill pill and it listened Nicholas wasn’t some soft fat guy sitting at the mall while a hundred kids made demands. He spoke with authority – so strongly that winds and waves shut the hell up at his request. Let’s strive for a little of that kind of authority in our lives!
