Without realising it, Nick Reynolds had been living his childhood on the run.Early one morning in 1968 he answered his front door, completely oblivious to the whirlwind about to be unleashed on his family. Most of Nick's early years had been spent carefree and happy on the shores of Mexico with his British parents. Charlie Bowen played this song for David Peyton on the first night they jammed together at a New Year's Eve party 50 years ago. “July, You're a Woman” was the one of the best tunes in the repertoire for their earliest gigs, especially after Roger Samples came along later that year to sing harmony on the chorus and do magic with his guitar solos.Bowen adapted his version of the song after learning it when it was brand new in 1969, released by composer John Stewart on his second solo album, California Bloodlines.John StewartJohn Stewart was a Southern California boy — born and died in San Diego — and grew up listening to the Sons of the Pioneers and Tex Ritter. His first venture into popular music was in the ‘50s with a high school garage band called “Johnny Stewart and the Furies.” Channeling the sounds of Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley, they toured colleges and coffee houses and released one single in 1957, "Rockin' Anna," which was a minor southern California hit. After the Furies faded, Stewart turned to folk music, teaming up with two friends to form a group called The Woodsmen. They were heavily influenced by The Kingston Trio, which had just emerged from the crowded San Francisco music scene. That group's 1958 release of “Tom Dooley” is frequently cited as launching the folk music revival in the early 1960s.When founder Dave Guard departed the group in 1961 to explore other musical directions, John Stewart was selected by remaining members Nick Reynolds and Bob Shane to replace him. Stewart stayed with The Kingston Trio until it disbanded in 1967.After that, Stewart toured as a solo act, recording for Capitol Records and exercising his composing chops. He wrote “Daydream Believer,” the closest he ever came to writing a standard. It was a big hit for The Monkeys in the fall of 1967 and then for Anne Murray in 1979.That Other SongIn 1975, John met and married fellow folk singer Buffy Ford, with whom he remained until his death in 2008 at age 68.It was with Buffy that John first recorded “July, You're a Woman” on their Signals Through the Glass album, which predated California Bloodlines by a year. The song also got some juice when it hit Billboard's Hot 100 with a rendition by Pat Boone in April 1969. After that, the tune received sporadic attention over the years. Eddy Arnold released it in 1970; three years after that, Red, White & Blue (Grass) took its turn with it.Our Take on the TuneIn the Floodisphere, the song was much on our minds in the mid-1970s, only to drop out of the mix for many decade. Then one night this autumn — hello! — it came wandering back to us.On this track from a recent rehearsal, Charlie's on banjo, Jack's on bongos, Randy's singing harmony and Danny's playing those sweet, sweet solos. In the late 1960s, a young Graham Trust from Liverpool, England, learned the foundations of vocal performance from his father, a well-respected community choirmaster. As young Graham grew, he was enthralled with the angst-ridden sound of the punk bands blaring from the radio – in particular those played by BBC Radio 2's renowned disc jockey, John Peel.  As a teenager, Graham combined his love of vocal harmonies with the sounds of the burgeoning punk scene and founded a post-punk band with schoolmates, notably a lad named Martyn Gilbert. From 1989 to 1991, Graham, Martyn, and drummer Tony Potter achieved regional fame performing as the band, The Vow – but it was only a short time later that the band split up.  During the ensuing years, Graham continued to hone his craft as a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist and followed his passion for music. Having built a large portfolio of promising original songs and now having the resources required for proper recording and music production, thanks to steady employment in the corporate world, he entered the recording studio in 2008 with the intent to share his musical creations with the world.  Writing all the songs, performing all the vocals, and recording many of the instruments, The Vow is the brainchild of Graham Trust. Through the years he has enlisted a revolving roster of musicians, including his former mates Martyn Gilbert, Tony Potter, and onetime bassist Nick Reynolds. Joining Graham on recent recordings is producer, musician, and studio owner, Simon Denny - favored for his orchestral arrangements.  In this episode, Graham Trust of The Vow joins Team Derringer to discuss his fascination with songcraft, his early musical influences – including The Jam – and his latest song, Dude for David, a musical tribute to David Bowie. Team Derringer counts down their top five favorite songs by The Vow and, with very little effort, coaxes Graham into sharing the history of each.  We think you'll enjoy this fun and entertaining interview with Graham Trust of The Vow and, on top of that, we're sure you'll fall in love with The Vow's compelling music along the way.   Please subscribe to Derringer Discoveries on your favorite digital platform so you'll never miss a future episode. From the implications of electronic warfare, the training for combined arms manoeuvre (in order to conduct the politically-necessary but militarily-viable offensive), to kill chains, passive drone operations, and information operations, the lessons from this war also cover more traditional – but critically important – facets of conventional combat power: sniping, dismounted close combat skills, and land mine usage. Predictions on the use of biological and chemical weapons by Russian forces in this theatre round out a wide ranging conversation on the trajectory of the war.

Together they performed comedy across the nation until they set their sights on producing television and feature films.Under his Broken Lizard banner, Jay directed and co-wrote Fox Searchlight Picture's comedy cult classics Super Troopers, Super Troopers 2, Club Dread, and Warner Bros' Beerfest. He also directed the Broken Lizard comedy special, Broken Lizard Stands Up.Super Troopers hit theaters in February 2002 and went on to gross $23 million with glowing audience reviews (and $80 million on home video.)Jay continued on to direct The Dukes of Hazard, direct and star in Millennium Entertainment's The Babymakers, and appear in DreamWorks' comedy hit, I Love You, Man. Recently, Chandrasekhar published his book, Mustache Shenanigans: Making Super Troopers and Other Adventures in Comedy that gives a behind the scenes look at the making of Super Troopers. In addition to his feature film work, Chandrasekhar has directed various TV shows, including several episodes of the Emmy Award winning series Arrested Development, Community, Chuck, The Grinder, Up All Night, Happy Endings, New Girl, and Psych. More recently, Jay has also directed episodes of Fresh Off the Boat, The Goldbergs, Speechless, and Schooled. His new film is Easter Sunday.Stand-up comedy sensation Jo Koy (Jo Koy: In His Elements, Jo Koy: Comin' in Hot) stars as a man returning home for an Easter celebration with his riotous, bickering, eating, drinking, laughing, loving family, in this love letter to his Filipino-American community. Easter Sunday features an all-star comedic cast that includes Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley series), Tia Carrere (True Lies, Wayne's World films), Brandon Wardell (Curb Your Enthusiasm series), Tony nominee Eva Noblezada (Broadway's Hadestown), Lydia Gaston (Broadway's The King and I), Asif Ali (WandaVision), Rodney To (Parks and Recreation series), Eugene Cordero (The Good Place series), Jay Chandrasekhar (I Love You, Man), Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip) and Lou Diamond Phillips (Courage Under Fire).  Easter Sunday, from DreamWorks Pictures, is directed by Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers, The Dukes of Hazzard), from a script by Ken Cheng (series Wilfred, Betas). The film is produced by Rideback's Dan Lin (The Lego Movie franchise, It franchise) and Jonathan Eirich (Aladdin, The Two Popes), and is executive produced by Jo Koy, Jessica Gao, Jimmy O. Yang, Ken Cheng, Joe Meloche, Nick Reynolds and Seth William Meier. The film will be distributed by Universal Pictures domestically. Amblin Partners and Universal will share international distribution rights.Jay also just launched a new app designed to give the power of reviews back to the people. It's call Vouch Vault."When my film, Super Troopers, showed at Sundance, it played to big laughing crowds. But when it was released to the public, the reviews were only so-so. On Rotten Tomatoes, Super Troopers, got a 38%-fresh aggregate score from less than a hundred reviewers. With the public, though, the film garnered a 90% fresh rating from more than 250,000 non-reviewers. This 38% reviewer-number stuck in my craw. I remember thinking, “Who are these reviewers, these strangers with outsized power, and why are we listening to them? Seriously. When's the last time you walked up to a stranger and said, “Hey, what movie should I see?”Our goal with Vouch Vault is to take recommendation power from anonymous strangers and give it to the people whose tastes you know and trust."

Sit back and enjoy a lively discussion about planted evidence, bungling robbers, the swinging Sixties, betrayal, distrust and life on the run. Nick is someone who we have gotten to know pretty well recently as he worked his way through our online philosophy course, so we were buzzing to get him on a podcast to share some things. Nick choose to look deeper at various Chiropractic terms during his time on our philosophy course, and ended up focusing on dis-ease. We were yet to know, at the time of recording the podcast, that this paper would feature in the recent publication of 33 from the UCA (uk). Which hopefully a few of you have read!   Photo by Nick Reynolds on Unsplash   I am so psyched to have another excellent guest mix. This one comes from long-time friend of the blog, Innesti - innesti.bandcamp.com I have featured a bunch of Innesti music over the years and have hosted guest mixes from him as well. A couple of days ago I got an email asking if I was interested in another guest mix of  ambient vaporwave tunes. Aww, hell yeah, I'm interested. Although I'm not quite sure what Vaporwave is. No worries, Innesti explains it for us: Vaporwave is a niche genre of electronic music that combines the visual aesthetic of meme culture with the glitched out and stretched sounds of 1980's mall and infomercial music. It is not the kind of music that you would expect to appeal to listeners who enjoy deep ambient soundscapes. Nonetheless, buried deep within this genre are some amazing beatless and atmospheric pieces. I am drawn to these because they capture the kinds of atmospheres that I enjoy, but emerge organically within a completely different musical tradition. This mix represents a sample of some of my favorite ambient vaporwave tracks. Sounds great! On a quiet Sunday morning in March 1966 the World Cup trophy was locked in an exhibition hall in central London. Shortly before midday, security guard John McLaren's went to check on the cup, "and there it was… nothing… just the plinth. Quite a shocker".In Episode 1 of Stealing Victory, John speaks publicly for the first time about what happened on the day of the theft. It was one of the most infamous heists of the 20th century and it came just a few months before the Queen was due to award the trophy to the World Cup winners. The thief was never identified but in 2017 Tom Pettifor, Crime Editor of the Daily Mirror, received a tip off from an underworld source. This series follows Tom's investigation into that tip off, delving into the seedy world of 1960s gangland London, police corruption and the secret making of a fake trophy. It tells us something about the stories we tell and those we choose to forget. And it's the search for an incredibly elusive man with an unforgettable head of hair. ..........................................Auddy presents Stealing Victory - an original production#stealingvictoryInvestigating reporter and presenter, Tom PettiforTheme Music by Nick Reynolds and Edward RoseTitle music by Guy FarleySeries Producer, Zak BrophySound Designer, Norman GoodmanExecutive Editor, Owen Bennett-JonesExecutive Producer, Andrew SampsonSpecial thanks to the Daily Mirror, London.

Currently, she is the creator and director of the award-winning digital series “Chronicles of a Dark Child In Hollywood.” In the series, real people share their truths, through comedy, about their most awkward experiences and what it's like being a person of color in Hollywood. Today on The Neil Haley Show's The Caregiver Dave Celebrity Segment, Caregiver Dave and The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Mike Marvin of The Kingston Trio. Taken in as part of the Reynolds family as a teenager, Mike learned his music ropes at the foot of Nick Reynolds, his late “adopted father.” With Nick's approval, Mike was present at Trio rehearsals during the years when the Trio was the biggest act in the world. Under Nick's tutelage, Mike learned backstage support, how Nick and the Trio picked songs, how the Trio managed their tours and many other critical insights. Mike was a member of the Trio's inner circle and with the opportunity to expand his musical horizons, learned from the Trio's manager Frank Werber everything from booking an act to conducting an orderly rehearsal to running a complicated business in an orderly fashion. After years of touring as a folksinger with band mate Tim Gorelangton, Mike branched into movies. Mike pioneered the editing of ski films, including the seminal 1972 90 minute ski movie “Earth Rider” featuring the legendary ski-parachute jump off Yosemite's El Capitan. This was the birth of extreme skiing in America. It was also the first time music was edited and inserted, note for note, as a driving force in cinematic imagery as Mike implemented the music of John Stewart, Leo Kottke, and The Kingston Trio in Earth Rider and three subsequent feature films. Mike is also an author, artist and architectural designer. Today Mike shares his time between Los Angeles and the southern Oregon coast as he, besides singing and performing with the Kingston Trio, fulfills his official role as the Chief Executive Officer of the Trio.

The Alabama 3 singer and co-founder Jake Black died in May: as the next tour date draws near band members must decide whether they can continue without him and how they mark his absence on stage. The decisions on a way forward started within days of Jake's unexpected death and whilst his body was still in the mortuary - moulds were taken of his face and hands in the hope that a death mask might help recreate his presence on stage. In addition of the death mask, sound experts have painstakingly resurrected early out takes of Jake - otherwise known as the Very Reverend D Wayne Love. As preparations gather for the new tour, the forgotten tapes of the talented singer are a constant reminder of his huge talent. The mask is made from the moulds taken by band member Nick Reynolds. He's the son of Bruce, the great train robber and as well as playing harmonica he's also a sculptor specialising in death masks. He's convinced that immortalising him in this way will be cathartic for all of them: During the grieving process band members travel to a huge Sopranos Convention in New Jersey, with thousands of fans eager to meet the musicians behind the Sopranos theme tune, 'Woke up this Morning.' It is a bitter sweet experience for Rob Spragg, otherwise known as Larry Love, who formed Alabama 3 with Jake in 1996: "Jake was larger than life, a real fusion of what we stood for and being in America without him is very hard." Rob has made big changes in his own life following Jake's death, largely giving up drugs and alcohol: "It's so hard - he should be here with us and hearing him during rehearsals and performances is bringing so many tears." Carrie believes that creativity is what gives us our humanity and our sanity; in art as a form of therapy to deal with emotions and life-changes; the importance of empathy; and in using provocative, boundary-pushing, irreverent and often politically incorrect expressions to engender meaningful reaction, response and change. After the huge success of Elvis Presley there was a moment when it looked as if rock ‘n’ roll might, indeed, be nothing more than a fad. In Greenback Dollar: The Incredible Rise of the Kingston Trio (The Scarecrow Press, 2013) William J. Bush details the history of this landscape altering band. In it, Bush details the biographies of, first, the original three members of the band – Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane, and Dave Guard – and their meteoric rise to fame from 1958 through 1961. He then tells of the falling out and eventual replacement of Guard with John Stewart and the continued artistic and commercial success of the band through the sixties. Along the way, Bush (a friend of all the members of these two incarnations of the band) describes the important places and events that led to the massive popularity that followed the Trio. So rock music never did fade away, but the influence of folk, thanks in large part to the Kingston Trio, became an integral part of popular music for decades to come. William J.
