It was in drag that Jackie discovered power in the ability to own the stage and express herself in new ways. During our conversation, Jackie talks about the inspiration for her podcast “It Do Take Nerd”, emphasizing the importance of representation and celebrating the queer themes that are found in a lot of “nerdy things”. She educates us on the intersection of the drag and trans communities, noting that trans women were really the pioneers in the gay rights movement. And in light of the conversation around gender happening across the country, Jackie honors drag as a welcoming space for all genders to participate or enjoy. Athena Reich is an award winning actress, singer/songwriter and writer. Reich is currently featured in “haveababy,” a documentary about In Vitro Fertilization, from Oscar-nominated filmmaker, Amanda Micheli. Her newest project, “Baby Steps,” on GOMag.com, is a webseries which follows her journey as a single, lesbian mother by choice, who dealt with infertility. Recently, Athena's one woman comedy show, "Lady Gaga: #ARTBIRTH" received multiple extensions at the Laurie Beechman Theater in New York City and Time Out Critic's Pick. Athena's music can be heard on iTunes, Spotify and Pandora. www.AthenaReich.com
Chatelaine Magazine recently named Athena Reich the “World’s Top Lady Gaga Impersonator.” But to label her an impersonator would tell only a fraction of the story. Reich, a talented artist in her own right, subverts Gaga with her own unique brand of feminist and queer music and drama – going so far as to incorporate her own pregnancy into a show called #ARTBIRTH, where Gaga delivers a baby live on stage. How Gaga is Reich? Billboard Magazine once printed a photo of her, mistakenly thinking it was Gaga. Then there’s the fact that Gaga herself tweeted in support of Reich’s work. In 2015 she starred as Lady Gaga in #ARTBIRTH at the Laurie Beechman Theater in NYC, which received multiple run extensions and a Time Out Critic's pick. Reich is hardly limited to her impersonator role. As a singer/songwriter, she has released 5 full-length albums and numerous singles. Her music videos have charted #1 on MTV LOGO and her song "Love is Love" won Best Pop Song at the Outmusic Awards. As an actress, her credits include While Collar, The Perfect Murder, "An Evening with Donald Kempinski" (Little Fella Films), "Hush: Inside the Waiting Womb" (LA / NY). Her music can be bought on iTunes or streamed on Spotify.
Alysha Umphress, who co-stars as Hildy to critical acclaim in the smash hit Broadway revival of 'On the Town,' tells all about her journey with the show; she shares how, after a slew of Broadway ensemble roles, making the bold decision to only audition for principal parts led to this career making opportunity for her; she tells great audition stories, and she reminisces about her days slinging drinks and hosting shows at the Laurie Beechman Theater.
In the Season Three premiere, JBN sits down with the one and only Ben Cameron (broadwaysessions.net). Ben has appeared on Broadway in Aida and the original casts of Footloose and Wicked. His touring credits include Sweet Charity (opposite Molly Ringwald), Footloose, Fame-The Musical, State Fair and Tommy. He has served on the faculties of NYU’s Cap 21 Studio and Wagner College and continues to teach theater, dance masterclasses and workshops across the country. He has danced for Dre.Dance, The Utah Contemporary Dance Theater (now called Odyssy), and on the ESPY awards. He has performed his one man show Different is Good in clubs around NYC. He has written and directed several cabaret/solo shows for numerous Broadway and cabaret stars, with scads of new projects in the works. He is one of NYC’s most sought after hosts with countless benefits and major theater industry events to his credit. He is currently the creator/host of “Broadway Sessions w/ Ben D” at The Laurie Beechman Theater. He also hosts Mostly Sondheim at The Duplex (for which he and his co-hosts were nominated for a 2011 MAC award), The Broken Leg Podcast and Onstage NY talent competitions. This week's performance: "Life Is A Bar" from TO HELL AND BACK by Joel B. New (joelbnew.com).
David Vernon is a "natural talent" and his interpretations and delivery of song come from the center of his soul. Trusting more in his own instincts he has purposely stayed away from academic and formal training. This is frequently surprising to those who have the experience of seeing and hearing his keen and polished sense of performance. David has an extensive recording catalog and has been featured on Radio and Television. But to truly capture his full essence one must experience him live. David pays close attention to the integrity and meaning of a song and weaves a spell through each piece he approaches. David has appeared at clubs in NYC over the last 10 years. His performances have been lauded at Iguana NYC, Don't Tell Mama's, The Vesta Lounge and The Laurie Beechman Theater. David's performances have been described as magical experiences. From the time David hits his first note the audience knows this is something special. His attention to detail in both material and staging is impeccable. There is only one word to describe David Vernon "Incomparable". Once you've seen David in person you will agree. LOVE is my latest recording project. I am now in the Autumn of my life and before I leave the planet I want to create my own masterpiece. I chose the subject of love because it's the only thing that has ever really made me feel alive. LOVE is an album of love songs that are very dear to my heart. I pour a lot of emotion into my singing and when I'm singing about love my inner being leaps with sensitivity. I think now is the right time to be focused on this particular subject, which somehow, someway affects all of our lives.
