Cerebral Women Art Talks Podcast

Ep.242 Shaunté Gates (b. 1979) lives and works in Washington, D.C. He studied at Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Bowie State University. Early in his career, Gates trained in oil painting and portraiture. His past experience as a tattoo artist and television motion graphics editor caused a profound shift in his artistic practice. His recent work employs a multidisciplinary approach, layering photography, painting, and found text to create dreamlike landscapes that explore labyrinthine social constructs and the physical sites that house and perpetuate them. Echoing the aesthetics of paper theater, his compositions unfold like intricate stage sets, where layered imagery and shifting perspectives evoke a sense of constructed reality and theatrical illusion. Gates was a participating artist in the Smithsonian Institution's “Men of Change” four-year traveling exhibition spanning ten museums, including the International African American Museum in Charleston, SC, California African American Museum, Cincinnati Underground Railroad Museum and Washington State History Museum (2019-23). He has been awarded the Louis Comfort Tiffany Biennial Grant (2022) and residencies with The Nicholson Project (2023), The Kennedy Center (2019) and Washington Project for the Arts (2018; 2017). Gates has work in esteemed private collections and institutions such as the Studio Museum in Harlem and Munson, Utica, NY. He has completed many public art commissions including Transcending, a painting commemorating the 140th anniversary of Howard University School of Law.  Photo credit: Biko Gates Artist https://www.shauntegates.com/ Virginia Tech https://artscenter.vt.edu/exhibitions/shaunte-gates.html Sperone Westwater  https://www.speronewestwater.com/artists/shaunte-gates#tab:slideshow Marc Straus https://marcstraus.com/artists/98-shaunte-gates/ FAD Magazine https://fadmagazine.com/2025/03/03/marc-straus-gallery-now-represent-shaunte-gates/ Zidoun-Bossuyt https://zidoun-bossuyt.com/artists/shaunte-gates/ | https://zidoun-bossuyt.com/exhibitions/shaunte-gates-poppies-parachutes-iii-we-should-be-flying-by-now/ Smithsonian https://menofchange.si.edu/exhibit/artist-pairings/shaunte-gates/ The Roanoker  https://theroanoker.com/events/shaunt%C3%A9-gates-2025/ Phillips Collection https://www.phillipscollection.org/event/2024-08-25-collaging-shaunte-gates Brooklyn Rail https://brooklynrail.org/2023/10/artseen/Shaunt-Gates-In-Light-of-the-Hunt/ Culture Type https://www.culturetype.com/tag/shaunte-gates/ Washington Informer Bridge https://wibridgedc.com/the-transformative-power-of-found-objects-with-shaunte-gates/ RUSH Philanthropic https://rushphilanthropic.org/artist/shaunte-gates/

It can change one's demeanor, boost confidence and stop an admirer dead in his or her tracks”.  Jeff is a self taught Makeup Artist who has had the pleasure to be coached by a few well  respected industry legends such as: Sam Fine, Valente Frazier, Renny Vasquez and Danessa Myricks.  During our chat we talked about how we met, setting boundaries, client retention, learning from the greats, sustaining longevity and so much more. Niya Cotton's life narrative is interwoven with a legacy of music. Born to a father who graced the ranks of original Richard Smallwood singers and a mother who commanded rhythm as a seasoned drummer, Niya's destiny as a musical communicator was evident from the start. Her journey commenced at the tender age of 2 in her church's youth choir, a stepping stone to her emergence as an artist of exceptional caliber. Graduating as salutatorian from Washington, D.C.'s Duke Ellington School of the Arts in 2000 and later earning a B.A. in Vocal Performance from Hampton University in 2004, Niya's artistic foundation was solidified. Her path led her to Los Angeles, where she contributed her talents to Warner Brothers' TV Music department, leaving her mark on prominent television shows. Her harmonious tones reverberated beyond screens, gracing tracks for renowned artists like Michael Bublé and Chance the Rapper. Notably, she etched her presence in Kirk Franklin's album "Losing My Religion," a turning point that paved the way for her enduring collaboration with the Fo Yo Soul family. Beyond music, Niya's influence extended through "The Whole Tone LLC," a venture nurturing wholeness through art, education, and entertainment. As a worship leader, creative director, and mentor, she continues to orchestrate a life that marries artistry with profound purpose, all while embracing her role as a dedicated parent alongside her husband Roy in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. E88 | Dave Chappelle- what's in a name? (Stand-up comedy/ speech)

Let's Netflix & Chill Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 19, 2022 3:16

Netflix has repeatedly doubled down on the transphobia they host on their platform, so this latest example should probably come as no surprise: on Thursday, the streaming service released a speech by Dave Chappelle called What's in a Name?, in which the comic calls the students who pushed back against the transphobic jokes in his standup special The Closer “unfair” and “instruments of oppression.”The 40-minute speech, which quietly dropped on Netflix without any prior announcement, was recorded at Chappelle's alma mater, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C., during a ceremony to rename the school's theater after him. However, in his speech, Chappelle announced that due to the controversy surrounding him, he declined to have the theater named after him. (The school eventually named it the Theater for Artistic Freedom and Expression instead.) Students at the school confronted Chappelle over the transphobia in The Closer during a Q&A back in November, and while the first 30 minutes of his speech at the naming ceremony mostly focus on his years attending Duke Ellington, the final 10 minutes address the pushback he received at that November event.“All the kids were screaming and yelling. I remember, I said to the kids, I go, ‘Well, okay, well what do you guys think I did wrong?' And a line formed,” Chappelle said. “These kids said everything about gender, and this and that and the other, but they didn't say anything about art. And this is my biggest gripe with this whole controversy with The Closer: That you cannot report on an artist's work and remove artistic nuance from his words. It would be like if you were reading a newspaper and they say, ‘Man Shot in the Face by a Six-Foot Rabbit Expected to Survive,' you'd be like, ‘Oh my god,' and they never tell you it's a Bugs Bunny cartoon.”Where, exactly, is the nuance in a joke that likens a trans person's genitalia to an Impossible burger, though? That's not some complex artistic statement that we're simply too stupid to grasp; it's just lazy hate speech passed off as a punchline.“When I heard those talking points coming out of these children's faces, that really, sincerely, hurt me,” Chappelle continued. “Because I know those kids didn't come up with those words. I've heard those words before. The more you say I can't say something, the more urgent it is for me to say it. And it has nothing to do with what you're saying I can't say. It has everything to do with my right, my freedom, of artistic expression. That is valuable to me. That is not severed from me. It's worth protecting for me, and it's worth protecting for everyone else who endeavors in our noble, noble professions.”“And these kids didn't understand that they were instruments of oppression,” Chappelle concluded. “And I didn't get mad at them. They're kids. They're freshmen. They're not ready yet. They don't know.”Again, no one is standing in the way of Chappelle's freedom of expression. He is being paid millions of dollars by Netflix to make these jokes. But freedom of expression doesn't men freedom from criticism; the students at Duke Ellington have a right to react to his specials however they see fit. And to argue that he's being “oppressed” because a handful of people got mad at him when Netflix has continued to throw obscene amounts of cash at him and defend him at every turn is completely laughable.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Some students lined up in the school's theater and voiced their opinion in a heated talk with Chappelle. Chappelle provided Thanksgiving meals for students and staff , in addition to giving three tickets for students and their guardians and two tickets for staff to Tuesday's screening of “Untitled” at Capital One Arena. Chappelle said having the theater named after him was an honor, though it was not his idea or desire. He encouraged people to donate to the school and note whether they think the theater should be named after him. “If by April those against the 'Chappelle' theater exceed the donations of those who are neutral or in favor … I will gladly step aside. If not, I will happily attend the naming ceremony,” he wrote. Follow this podcast and Tim Black at RealTimBlack on FB, Twitter, YouTube

Today’s episode is with conceptual and multimedia installation artist, Kenseth Armstead. Born and raised in Washington DC, Kenseth found his artistic path in high school at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, later receiving his Bachelors of Fine Arts from the Corcoran College of Art & Design and his Masters in Integrated Digital Media from the Tandon School of Engineering at NYU. With a career spanning over three decades, his provocative works centralize history, American culture, and the complex narratives embedded in ethnicity. His multimedia public art installations are deliberately in dialogue with the communities in which they reside. Nestled in his large scale, at-times architectural works, are themes around the black imagination, social justice, abolition, redemption, freedom and change. He was also recently named to the Public Design Commission in New York City.  Although Kenseth is known for his independent installations, he actually started his career in collaborative work with X-PRZ, an art band which included his mentor Tony Cokes, along with artists Doug Anderson and Mark Pierson. This avant garde group was dedicated to using music, video, and other ephemera to critique culture and existing social norms, especially as it pertained to art world notions of individual genius and critical theory. Kenseth’s most recent public artwork, Boulevard of African Monarchs, connects the hub of African excellence in America,(Harlem, USA) to the royal court of the Kassena people of Tiebele, Burkina Faso. It’s on display until August of 2021 at the intersection 116th Street & Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd in Harlem. Kenseth is a prodigious scholar and we cover a LOT of ground. In this episode we discuss his 30/30/30 formula for consistent artistic production, the link between Chistianity and social media, the role time plays in criticism, and what community engagement in art really looks like. Kenseth’s portfolio is extensive, immersive and influential. His work has infiltrated the streets of New York for decades with projects and installations that focus on creating images and cultural activities that aim to close the gulf of space and time between African and African-American identity, communication and social ritual. Recorded remotely and safely, it is with great pleasure that I introduce Kenseth Armstead to the IBI Podcast. Here are some highlights: On his 30/30/30 formula: “I’ve had this rule about 30-30-30 so roughly I’m splitting my time 30 percent production, 30 percent marketing, and it’s like you realize like the 30% when you’re making work is not separate from the 30% when you’re marketing the work or the 30% when you’re doing administrative work these are not separate concepts they are all apart of this flow.” On Media: “If you took in all media and you watched television for 24 hours and you didn’t have a way to be critical about it, you would commit suicide because you don’t have the car that they are trying to sell you, you don’t have the house, you don’t have the money. And if you had the money you would never have enough, you’re not tall enough, you’re not short enough, you’re not this, you’re not that, it’s all about what you’re not!”  On community engagement: “When you’re the youngest of 8 you don’t even ever get your own fresh pair of underwear, everything is a hammy down. So I’ve always been in a group in a sense so that’s natural to me, but actually naturally I’m an introvert, naturally alone, and reading. But then in order to cope with life, you build an extrovert persona and they’re pure sort of narcissists who really feed on community and so Bill Clinton would be a pure narcissist who feeds on crowds. Obama would be someone like myself who’s an introvert but can be an extrovert and so there is a cost. In the piece I did in Central Park, I think I talked to 600 people directly in one day but then after that, I don’t want to talk to people for days because it’s a lot, it’s a lot Support this podcast

Diva Tech Talk Podcast

Diva Tech Talk interviewed Linda Cureton, veteran U.S. government tech leader, turned entrepreneur.  Linda “was always fascinated with numbers.” Facetiously she recalled doing a math as a youngster to compute how old she would be in 2000.  “I remember coming up with the age --- 41.” She thought: “Oh my God. I’ll be dead. I better hurry up and do things!” Linda has had many chances to “do things”  (BIG THINGS), although she resisted technology in early life.  Originally aimed toward Washington D.C.’s Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Linda wanted to take calculus in 12th grade so matriculated at Howard University, instead, as a senior in high school in an advanced calculus program. She began university as a pre-med major, (“I hated it”) until a mentor counseled her. “You will be successful if you do what you love and enjoy.” Linda switched her major to mathematics.  “I wanted to do pure math, but the counselor insisted I take computer classes.” As she began to take programming classes (IBM Assembler, Fortran, etc.), “I really enjoyed them.” After graduation, she interviewed at the National Air and Space Administration (NASA). “That’s how I got into technology,” she said.  At the time, it felt like “punishment.” Clearly, that feeling dramatically changed. Linda was a mathematician/programmer for 2 years at NASA, then moved to the U.S. Navy, working in the weapons systems development program, to become a program manager in undersea warfare.  “After 6 months, I realized I didn’t like it, at all” so she moved to become a systems programmer at the Seattle naval base.  Post-divorce, Linda moved to Maryland to become a systems programmer at the U.S. Department of Justice.  She was at DOJ for 16 years, in a variety of technology management jobs and eventually became Deputy Director of the DOJ Data Center.  Then she began applying for senior executive positions in government. “I was told I was not qualified,” she said. She recognized a need to focus on building coalitions, and whole organizations, “from dirt, from the ground up.”  Engaging in that developed “executive acumen.” She went to the U.S. Department of Energy as Associate Chief Information Officer for operations for several years. “I was the only African-American career executive in the department, and the only black female; it felt very lonely.” But, from that experience she grew immensely. Subsequently, Linda became Deputy Assistant Director of Science and Technology and then Deputy CIO for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), as a female executive in a male-dominated agency where she “built a very strong team.”  Following that, she spent 8 years, again at NASA – first as CIO at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, then as CIO for the entire NASA agency. (“My boss’s boss was President Barack Obama! The buck stops there.”)  At NASA, she spent most of her time “debugging” the nationwide agency and bolstering it. In evaluating her government career, Linda admitted “I was a pretty terrible programmer, but I was good at debugging.”  She still considers that a major strength: the ability to find the “bugs” in an organization and solve them. Linda had no formal mentors in her career but learned “the best way to have a mentor is to be a mentor,” and mentors can be found outside of your organization.  While at DOE, feeling isolated, Linda reached out to Gloria Parker, the first African-American female working at a Cabinet level, as the CIO for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Gloria generously shared invaluable advice about how to effectively serve as a CIO. They have remained friends to this day. After retiring from NASA, Linda founded Muse Technologies, branded to reflect the concept of “goddesses of inspiration.”  She wrote a book: THE LEADERSHIP MUSE , about things in the physical and spiritual world from which she drew leadership inspiration (“from hummingbirds to owls to notions about numbers and infinity and music…” and more.) In Linda’s eyes, “the job of leadership is so difficult, and impossible, it takes divine inspiration, sometimes, to get through it.”  Her company supports Federal executives who need change support, supplying them with innovative problem-solving, process support, strategic planning, project/program management, technology recommendations and “soft skills” training for staff. Linda expressed gratitude for the setbacks and disappointments she experienced over the years.  “They have made me what I am, today.” Her greatest joy comes from contemplating “the vastness of the world we live in, God’s creation.  It gives me a chance to decompress….to understand more about my purpose in life.” Conversely, Linda’s biggest fear is potential failure, which “I have pivoted to have the courage to succeed.”  Having recently seen “Hidden Figures,” (about African-American women overcoming discrimination to strongly contribute  to the U.S. space program), Linda left the theater “annoyed” because so many people were rejoicing, thinking that 1965 barriers faced by the film’s protagonists no longer existed. “Dude,” she said. “That was so last week. Maybe they don’t give you the trash to take out, but I had my share of more ‘nuanced’ attitudes!”   On work-life balance, Linda commented: “Life is not 50/50.  It is 100/100. I am 100% who I am all the time.” Three of her career lessons for women are: you can cry, but keep on moving; don’t apologize for being a woman – use female advantages to succeed:  and never sell out; “it’s better to quit a job than do something you think is wrong.” In her community life, Linda gives back by being an active board member for the DC Youth Orchestra for K-12 children and a newly-formed regional group called Pink Architecture, convening tech women to share insights, knowledge and support.   Make sure to check us out on online at www.divatechtalk.com, on Twitter @divatechtalks, and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/divatechtalk. This season, More Perfect is taking its camera lens off the Supreme Court and zooming in on the words of the people: the 27 amendments that We The People have made to our Constitution. We're taking on these 27 amendments both in song and in story. This episode is best listened to alongside 27: The Most Perfect Album, an entire album (an ALBUM!) and digital experience of original music and art inspired by the 27 Amendments. Think of these episodes as the audio liner notes. In More Perfect's final episode of the season, listen to liner notes for two amendments that contemplate the still-unfinished status of our Constitution. "27" is an album that marks a particular point in our history: this moment when we have 27 Amendments to our Constitution. What will be the 28th? Maybe it will address our nation's capital. The capital has been a bit of a Constitutional anomaly for much of our nation's history — it's at the heart of the democracy, but because it's not a state, people in Washington D.C. have been disenfranchised almost by accident. The 23rd Amendment solved some of the problem — it gave D.C. the right to vote for president. But it left much of D.C.'s representation questions unanswered. D.C. still does not have voting representation in Congress. Instead, D.C. sends a "non-voting delegate" to Congress. For this liner note, More Perfect profiles that delegate, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, and her unique approach to fighting for power in a virtually powerless role. The song for the 23rd Amendment is by The Mellow Tones, a group of students from D.C. high school Duke Ellington School of the Arts, along with their teacher Mark G. Meadows. The chorus, "Why won't you count on me?" reflects on the continued disenfranchisement of our nation's capital.   The final amendment of the album, the 27th Amendment, put limits on Senators' ability to give themselves a pay raise, and it has arguably the most unusual path to ratification of all 27. The first draft for the amendment was written by none other than James Madison in 1789, but back then, it didn't get enough votes from the states for ratification. It wasn't until a college student named Gregory Watson awakened the dormant amendment centuries later that it was finally ratified. The 27th Amendment song is by Kevin Devine and tells Watson's story.
