This episode is dedicated to Robb Chadwick, who passed away in mid-December. Robb was a great friend, a supporter of this podcast and a true Southern gentleman. His insight and knowledge of the facts of many cases, along with his kind and calm debate strategy will be missed by many. RIP, Robb.In Episode 14, State of Maryland v. Adnan Masud Syed, Lisa was joined by Robb Chadwick, a former journalist with a life-long interest in the truth of true crime and fairness for victims. Since his retirement, Robb has researched and written about a number of cases — but none more than the case of the day: the murder of Hae Min Lee by Adnan Masud Syed. On January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee disappeared after leaving Woodlawn High School, where she was a popular athlete and scholar. Police looking for her questioned several people, including her current boyfriend and ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed. On February 9, 1999, Hae's body was found partially buried in a shallow grave in Leakin Park, in Baltimore City, Maryland. Three days later, on February 12, an anonymous tip led police to put Adnan Syed at the top of their suspect list. On February 27, 1999, Jay Wilds, an acquaintance of Syed, was interviewed by police and, early on the morning of February 28, 1999, led police to Hae's missing vehicle. Syed was convicted and sentenced to Life, plus 30 years in 2000. The case has been the topic of multiple podcasts over the years and in 2022, his conviction was vacated by a pro-defendant judge in a fixed hearing at which no one represented the interests of Hae Min Lee, or her family. On August 30, 2024, the Supreme Court of Maryland affirmed the Appellate Court of Maryland's reinstatement of Syed's conviction and held that Hae's brother, Young Lee, had the right to be heard at any future hearing seeking to vacate Syed's conviction.

Leakin Park in Baltimore, USA is a vast city park covering 1,216 acres that borders 20 of the city's inner neighborhoods. Despite its natural beauty and historic structures, it has earned the nickname "murder park" due to its dark history of unsolved crimes and murders. Since 1946, 79 known bodies have been found in or near the park, many of which were killed elsewhere and brought to the park for disposal. Although some areas have been closed off or cleared to make it more attractive to visitors, Leakin Park will always be associated with death, and those who walk through it must always be aware of the possibility of discovering its next victim...Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Claire has plucked one of many, many shocking cases out of a singular park in Maryland. This park is an attractive place for many, due to the steam locomotive and 1,200 acres to roam unsupervised. Sadly, due to the lack of supervision, it has become a dumping ground for bodies. The murderer we will discuss is active during a few short, yet traumatic days in 1968. He kills several young boys in Leakin Park. Maryland. Our crazy for the week is Reginald Oates. It was an unseasonably warm January afternoon in Baltimore County, Maryland when 18-year-old Woodlawn High School senior Hae Min Lee left school in her gray 1998 Nissan Sentra and headed out to pick up her six-year-old cousin from kindergarten before going to her job at the local LensCrafters. But sometime after leaving Woodlawn High School and before picking up her little cousin, Hae Min Lee vanished into thin air. Less than a month later, maintenance worker Alonzo Sellers was driving back to his job at Coppin State College and drinking a beer when he realized he had to use the bathroom, and it couldn't wait. Mr. Sellers pulled over on the side of the road and walked deep into the woods to relieve himself, at which point he made a gruesome discovery. According to his later testimony, Mr. Sellers said quote, “when I looked down I seen something that looked like hair, something that was covered by dirt. And I looked real good again, and that's when I seen what looked like a foot” end quote. Alonzo Sellers had stumbled upon the body of Hae Min Lee, she had been strangled to death by the bare hands of her attacker, and within a few weeks, the police would make an arrest for her murder. But, the suspect was a person that no one would have suspected capable of such a horrific crime, the ex-boyfriend of Hae, a sweet and smart 17-year-old named Adnan Syed. John recently found himself stumbling into none other than Leakin Park, made famous by the Hae Min Lee / Adnan Syed case on Serial and Undisclosed podcasts. John gives his real-time audio reaction to being in the exact spot where Hae's body was found, and realizes that some of the details of the case are actually more interesting after seeing the sites in person. Today, October 11, 2022, the State of Maryland announced they would be dropping all charges against Adnan Syed for the murder of Hae Min Lee, based on DNA evidence. We'll react more to this news in the coming weeks, but let's hope Hae's true killer is found and brought to justice. Someone's life and someone's 23 years have been lost. Adnan Syed, convicted of killing teen Hae Min Lee more than 20 years ago, is free after a Baltimore Circuit Judge overturned Syed's murder conviction. Prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed that a yearlong investigation raised doubts about Syed's guilty finding, it was revealed that there were other possible suspects in Lee's strangling death. Prosecutors also noted that Syed was convicted partly due to cellphone data which was later found to be unreliable. Hae Min Lee was found strangled in a shallow grave in Leakin Park in 1999. Syed has been placed on home detention and must wear a GPS monitor. The Baltimore State Attorney's office has 30 days to decide whether they will drop Syed's charges or try him again. Tuckered Outers! I wanted to post our interview with Rabia Chaudry, which we published back in December, since we are planning a part 2 with her very soon!So I started this podcast back in 2017 after listening and being inspired by the first season of Serial, the most downloaded podcast of all time. I could not think of a better guest to round out this year than the woman who brought Adnan Syed's case to light, Rabia Chaudry.Rabia Chaudry is a Pakistani-American attorney, author and podcast host. A childhood friend of Adnan Syed, subject of the podcast Serial (2014), Chaudry subsequently wrote a book about his case called Adnan's Story: The Search for Truth and Justice After Serial (2016), which became a New York Times best seller. Chaudry co-hosts 3 podcasts- Undisclosed, a podcast on Syed's case and many others, which has now 360 million downloads, The 45th, which followed the crazy that was Trumps presidency, and The Hidden Djinn, showcasing the folklore and history behind the legends of the djinn, and connecting the tales through Islamic, Christian, and Jewish sources. She is also an Executive Producer of a four-part HBO documentary "The Case Against Adnan Syed." She tells me how she feels about Serial now looking back and how she is still not giving up hope, how Adnan and his family are doing now and the case as it stands, and her personal theory on what really happened. We also talk about her personal struggles at home during her first marriage and how law school saved her, the Safe Nation Collaborative, which she founded, and it's focus on CVE (countering violent extremism), Undisclosed, the biggest wrongful conviction podcast in the world, which has now helped exonerate nearly a dozen defendants, and her future innocence work with the Aspen Institute/ADL Civil Society Fellow. Rabia's second book, "Fatty Fatty Boom Boom", a memoir on food, fat, and family, is due to be out in 2022. There was so much to talk about, I have a feeling there may be a part two to this! So please enjoy my final episode of 2021 with Rabia Chaudry. www.rabiachaudry.com

It’s Kristin’s birthday week and for her birthday, she decided this episode was going to be her genie wish case - you know, the one case you would spend a genie wish on to find out exactly what happened. We all know the case - it’s been covered extensively in podcasts like Serial, HBO documentaries, books, blogs, etc - January 13, 1999, High school student Hae Min Lee was murdered. Her body was found almost a month later, half buried in Leakin Park in Baltimore. Her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, is serving a life sentence for her murder, but we all have QUESTIONS. This won’t be a total recap of Serial. Instead, Kristin takes Mogab BEYOND Serial, diving into everything Serial left out or didn’t uncover. Let’s get into it! Hae Min Lee was a Korean American high school student who was murdered in 1999. She was last seen alive on January 13 in Baltimore County, and her body was found four weeks later in Leakin Park; she was found to have been killed by manual strangulation. Her boyfriend, Adnan Syed was convicted of her murder. Syed has stayed committed that he did not kill Hae. This case is one of those ones that has left me clueless. Hello! My name is Jaroslaw Zorczykowski. I am an investigating officer as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). I am currently working on a case to find out who killed a young lady named Hae Min Lee. I worked on this case, who, what, when, where, why, and how it went missing last February. It was very scary and horrible the way he did at the beginning of 1999. When the year begins with a murdered teen, I know it will be very challenging this year. To help me understand the case who killed, what the hell... On February 9th,1999 in Baltimore, the body of Hae Min Lee was found in Leakin Park as Alonzo Sellers started calling the police that the body has been found of Leakin Park. The police started checking it there and the car was parked, the testimony as the shovel, shoes, and touching steering were touches. Six weeks later, her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested and charged with her murder. After that, I opened the drawer in the car, in the drawer was noted from Hae to Don in Hae's car, so we're going to change mission because we found this note in in the car, when I finded and it can maybe it wasn't an Adnan Syed murder. Furthermore, I think so, that Adnan Syed wasn’t murder because he was kidnapped for Hae Lee as Hae noted for Don, and that was happening. Finally, I started bringing the case to court that Adnan Syed was not guilty because I brought a note from Hae to Don, so we have something else to think about that it may take more years but this information is Adnan Syed murder of Hae Lee because he was kidnapped for Hae Lee. In conclusion, all this evidence has already been pointed to Adnan Syed in the case that he is not guilty. So, now I'm starting this more information for this murdered Hae Min Lee. Thank you very much.

Ahead of this weekend's final episode in "The Case Against Adnan Syed," the Baltimore Sun broke the news with an article that says the State of Maryland ran DNA tests in October 2018 on previously untested evidence from the Leakin Park burial site of murder victim Hae Min Lee. And Adnan Syed's DNA was not discovered on any of the samples. This has sparked a torrent of discussion and misinformation online. So, Rebecca and Kevin discussed the findings and their implications with attorney Susan Simpson of "Undisclosed." Support the show.

On the afternoon of January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee disappeared after leaving Woodlawn High School, where she was a popular athlete and scholar. Police looking for her questioned several people, including her current boyfriend, Don C., and ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed. Hae’s body was found partially buried in a shallow grave in Leakin Park, in Baltimore City, Maryland. Three days later, on February 12, an anonymous tip led police to put Adnan Syed at the top of their suspect list. On February 27, 1999, Jay Wilds, an acquaintance of Syed, was interviewed by police and, early on the morning of February 28, 1999, led police to Hae’s missing vehicle. Syed was arrested and charged with first degree murder. The case has been the topic of multiple podcasts, including Serial in 2014 and Undisclosed in 2015, which raised questions about the investigation and Syed’s conviction and have alleged that Syed is actually innocent. Join Lisa O’Brien and Michael Carnahan on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at 8:00 p.m. Central for a discussion of the facts surrounding Hae’s disappearance, the investigation, the evidence against Syed, the issues raised by Syed during his post-conviction challenges and the appeal by the State of Maryland challenging the 2016 decision to grant Syed’s request for a new trial. Hundreds of millions of people tuned into Serial season one back in 2014. Sarah Koenig told us all about the story of 18-year-old high school senior Hae Min Lee who disappeared on January 13th, 1999. Hae's body was later found in Leakin Park, and not too long after the discovery of her body, police zeroed in on their prime suspect: Adnan Syed. Sarah took us all through 12 episodes of "Did he or didn't he?" and many of us ended the season with more questions than answers. But did you know that Serial was just the beginning and there was so much that Sarah never covered? If you listened to Serial season one, you must listen to this single episode that sums up the top four points Serial didn't tell you, but you need to know before you decide whether or not you think Adnan is guilty. We won't be re-covering the Serial story - we jump in assuming you already know it. So, if you haven't listened yet, check out the first season of Serial. In 1999, the body of Hae Min Lee was found in a shallow grave in Baltimore's Leakin Park. Six weeks later, her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested and charged with her murder. The state's case against Syed hinged entirely on the testimony of Jay Wilds, who said that he had been with Syed on the day of the murder, and that he had assisted with the burial in Leakin Park. At trial, the prosecutor argued that although Wilds had repeatedly given false and inconsistent statements concerning the crime, his story was corroborated by Adnan's cell phone records. Syed was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison; Wilds pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact, and was released without serving a day in prison.Last year, the creators of This American Life covered Syed's story in the popular podcast Serial. In order to better visualize the events that were being described on the show, Attorney Susan Simpson put together a series of maps comparing the location data from the cell records with the various witness statements concerning the location of the phone throughout the day on which Hae Lee was murdered. The result showed just how fragmented and incoherent the prosecution's case was, as none of Wilds' multiple stories can be reconciled with the cell phone data. It also highlighted many of the gaps in the prosecution's evidence, and showed how numerous witnesses who could potentially have confirmed or denied Jay's stories were never contacted by investigators.
