This episode is dedicated to Robb Chadwick, who passed away in mid-December. Robb was a great friend, a supporter of this podcast and a true Southern gentleman. His insight and knowledge of the facts of many cases, along with his kind and calm debate strategy will be missed by many. RIP, Robb.In Episode 14, State of Maryland v. Adnan Masud Syed, Lisa was joined by Robb Chadwick, a former journalist with a life-long interest in the truth of true crime and fairness for victims. Since his retirement, Robb has researched and written about a number of cases — but none more than the case of the day: the murder of Hae Min Lee by Adnan Masud Syed. On January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee disappeared after leaving Woodlawn High School, where she was a popular athlete and scholar. Police looking for her questioned several people, including her current boyfriend and ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed. On February 9, 1999, Hae's body was found partially buried in a shallow grave in Leakin Park, in Baltimore City, Maryland. Three days later, on February 12, an anonymous tip led police to put Adnan Syed at the top of their suspect list. On February 27, 1999, Jay Wilds, an acquaintance of Syed, was interviewed by police and, early on the morning of February 28, 1999, led police to Hae's missing vehicle. Syed was convicted and sentenced to Life, plus 30 years in 2000. The case has been the topic of multiple podcasts over the years and in 2022, his conviction was vacated by a pro-defendant judge in a fixed hearing at which no one represented the interests of Hae Min Lee, or her family. On August 30, 2024, the Supreme Court of Maryland affirmed the Appellate Court of Maryland's reinstatement of Syed's conviction and held that Hae's brother, Young Lee, had the right to be heard at any future hearing seeking to vacate Syed's conviction.

J.T. Moore was born right here in the city of Birmingham. Raised in Ensley off of Bush Blvd., he had the opportunity to really experience community. Councilor Moore lived on a street where all of his neighbors knew one another. Moore's grandmother was one who loved to entertain and to cook. It was common for her to get neighbors together to Bar-B-Que on their front lawns. His grandfather served proudly for over 30 years with the Greyhound Bus Station. Councilor Moore would often go on trips with him in the summer time sitting in the front seat listening to M.C. Hammer. Councilor Moore's Grandparents taught him two valuable lessons, the importance of taking care of people and taking pride in what you do. Councilor Moore carried that same spirit and those valuable lessons with him as he began his public service work serving as an intern with the Division of Youth Services. There he learned the true value of serving people. In 2011 Councilor Moore had the pleasure of serving as a coordinator for Alabama Possible where he worked heavily at Woodlawn High School facilitating college prep, mentorship, and assisting in organizing the HBCU college fair for students. He found tremendous value in supporting students and building relationships within the community to further his work and fell in love with the Woodlawn community. There he reflected on the deeper impact that would be made by living in the same place in which he worked. In 2013 he married his beautiful wife and they decided to plant roots there. Whether mentoring teens at A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club, working with families of Hayes K-8 to reduce absenteeism or helping to provide free legal assistance through Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham to those who need it most, Councilor Moore has always led with compassion — diligently seeking out opportunities to serve the needs of others. He believes that by nurturing the idea of unity and collaboration amongst the residents of District 4, there won't be anything the community can't accomplish.
The case of Adnan Syed took another dramatic turn yesterday. You may recall that in 2000, Mr. Syed was convicted of the murder of Hae Min Lee, his girlfriend and classmate at Woodlawn High School. He served more than 20 years in prison, until September of last year, when his conviction was vacated and he was released. Then, in March of this year, the Appellate Court of Maryland reinstated that conviction and sentence. Yesterday, in a 2-1 decision, the court denied Syed's motion to reconsider its decision. Syed's attorney, Erica Suter, has indicated she will appeal that decision to the MD Supreme Court. Steven Klepper is an experienced appellate lawyer with the law firm Kramon and Graham here in Baltimore. Today, he helps us understand what led to the Appeals Court's decision yesterday, the impact it might have on the Syed case, and the legal precedents it could establish.… Steven Klepper joins Tom in Studio A.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

LSU football head coach Brian Kelly met with the media this week to provide updates and insights about his team as they navigate through spring practice. Kelly spoke on all three quarterbacks in the Tigers' QB room this season: returning starter Jayden Daniels, returning QB2 Garrett Nussmeier, and true freshman Rickie Collins. Kelly said the two veterans, Daniels and Nussmeier, are working through their own specific list of improvements. This past season Daniels left several wide open receivers un-targeted and had a tendency to defer to his legs rather than push the ball down field through the air. Kelly said they are working through those things with Daniels to ensure he is a more aggressive QB this season that can take advantage of the talented wide receiver room more than he did last year. Nussmeier, on the other hand, is the exact opposite. Garrett "gun slinger" Nussmeier earned that nickname because of his big arm and willingness to make risky throws and put the ball in tight windows. While that is his greatest strength, it has also led to turnovers. So while Daniels works on moving the ball downfield, Nussmeier is learning discipline. But it is not just Daniels and Nussmeier in the QB room: true freshman Rickie Collins, the four-star recruit from Woodlawn High School in Baton Rouge, also entered onto the scene this spring. Kelly stated Collins has his plate full learning the offense and getting acclimated to the next highest level of football. While it is still early for Collins, at what point will he need to get up to speed in case he needs to answer the call? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! It was an unseasonably warm January afternoon in Baltimore County, Maryland when 18-year-old Woodlawn High School senior Hae Min Lee left school in her gray 1998 Nissan Sentra and headed out to pick up her six-year-old cousin from kindergarten before going to her job at the local LensCrafters. But sometime after leaving Woodlawn High School and before picking up her little cousin, Hae Min Lee vanished into thin air. Less than a month later, maintenance worker Alonzo Sellers was driving back to his job at Coppin State College and drinking a beer when he realized he had to use the bathroom, and it couldn't wait. Mr. Sellers pulled over on the side of the road and walked deep into the woods to relieve himself, at which point he made a gruesome discovery. According to his later testimony, Mr. Sellers said quote, “when I looked down I seen something that looked like hair, something that was covered by dirt. And I looked real good again, and that's when I seen what looked like a foot” end quote. Alonzo Sellers had stumbled upon the body of Hae Min Lee, she had been strangled to death by the bare hands of her attacker, and within a few weeks, the police would make an arrest for her murder. But, the suspect was a person that no one would have suspected capable of such a horrific crime, the ex-boyfriend of Hae, a sweet and smart 17-year-old named Adnan Syed. John recently found himself stumbling into none other than Leakin Park, made famous by the Hae Min Lee / Adnan Syed case on Serial and Undisclosed podcasts. John gives his real-time audio reaction to being in the exact spot where Hae's body was found, and realizes that some of the details of the case are actually more interesting after seeing the sites in person. Today, October 11, 2022, the State of Maryland announced they would be dropping all charges against Adnan Syed for the murder of Hae Min Lee, based on DNA evidence. We'll react more to this news in the coming weeks, but let's hope Hae's true killer is found and brought to justice. Someone's life and someone's 23 years have been lost. In the last four days, LSU landed commitments from two of the top players in the state of Louisiana: 5-star WR Shelton Sampson out of Catholic High and 4-star QB Rickie Collins from Woodlawn High School. But what exactly is so important about those two commitments? Shelton Sampson is ranked the third-best player in the state of Louisiana and had offers from Alabama, Georgia, and Florida State (where his former Catholic High head coach Gabe Fertitta is now an analyst), but when asked why he picked LSU he simply said, "why wouldn't I want to play for LSU?" Rickie Collins committed to play for Purdue in October of last year. Less than two weeks ago he committed from the Boilermakers and Wednesday night made his decision to stay home and play for the Tigers. There were concerns about Brian Kelly's ability to recruit players in the state of Louisiana since he had very few ties in the state much less the southeast as a whole. But with two of the top players in LSU's backyard making their decision to stay home, can we admit that our concerns just might be gone? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! It's Baltimore, 1999. Hae Min Lee, a popular high-school senior, disappeared sometime after school and before work one day. Six weeks after she disappeared, detectives arrested her classmate and ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, for her murder. Syed claimed his innocence, but damning testimony from a close friend quickly put him at the top of the suspects list. A classmate at Woodlawn High School claims she knows that Adnan's whereabouts prove he couldn't have committed the crime, but others still claim he is responsible. Who is telling truth and who has the answers to Hae Min's untimely death? The case remains solved, yet unanswered questions cast doubt on the outcome of the investigation. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/patrick-conn/support
Tuckered Outers! I wanted to post our interview with Rabia Chaudry, which we published back in December, since we are planning a part 2 with her very soon!So I started this podcast back in 2017 after listening and being inspired by the first season of Serial, the most downloaded podcast of all time. I could not think of a better guest to round out this year than the woman who brought Adnan Syed's case to light, Rabia Chaudry.Rabia Chaudry is a Pakistani-American attorney, author and podcast host. A childhood friend of Adnan Syed, subject of the podcast Serial (2014), Chaudry subsequently wrote a book about his case called Adnan's Story: The Search for Truth and Justice After Serial (2016), which became a New York Times best seller. Chaudry co-hosts 3 podcasts- Undisclosed, a podcast on Syed's case and many others, which has now 360 million downloads, The 45th, which followed the crazy that was Trumps presidency, and The Hidden Djinn, showcasing the folklore and history behind the legends of the djinn, and connecting the tales through Islamic, Christian, and Jewish sources. She is also an Executive Producer of a four-part HBO documentary "The Case Against Adnan Syed." She tells me how she feels about Serial now looking back and how she is still not giving up hope, how Adnan and his family are doing now and the case as it stands, and her personal theory on what really happened. We also talk about her personal struggles at home during her first marriage and how law school saved her, the Safe Nation Collaborative, which she founded, and it's focus on CVE (countering violent extremism), Undisclosed, the biggest wrongful conviction podcast in the world, which has now helped exonerate nearly a dozen defendants, and her future innocence work with the Aspen Institute/ADL Civil Society Fellow. Rabia's second book, "Fatty Fatty Boom Boom", a memoir on food, fat, and family, is due to be out in 2022. There was so much to talk about, I have a feeling there may be a part two to this! So please enjoy my final episode of 2021 with Rabia Chaudry. www.rabiachaudry.com
Back in November 2014 a new podcast was taking the world by storm. It was barely 2 months old at the time, but Serial, a new podcast from the creators of This American Life, hosted by Sarah Koenig, become the biggest podcast hit ever. Here's how their website describes the show... Serial will follow one story - a true story - over the course of a whole season. We'll follow the plot and characters wherever they take us and we won't know what happens at the end of the story until we get there, not long before you get there with us. Each week we'll bring you the latest chapter, so it's important to listen in order, starting with Episode 1. In typical fashion of other extraordinary storytelling podcasts (like my all-time favorite, now retired show, The Story with Dick Gordon), Serial has superior production elements, but mostly a compelling story. It's Baltimore, 1999. Hae Min Lee, a popular high-school senior, disappears after school one day. Six weeks later detectives arrest her classmate and ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, for her murder. He says he's innocent - though he can't exactly remember what he was doing on that January afternoon. But someone can. A classmate at Woodlawn High School says she knows where Adnan was. The trouble is, she's nowhere to be found. The case of this first season of Serial focuses on a single accuser named Jay. Jay tells police a story with vivid details about how Adnan murdered his ex-girlfriend, Hae. Without any DNA or other hard evidence, a jury quickly convicts him of first-degree murder. Is Jay telling the truth? What about the other testimony that came out during the trial. Sarah, the host of the show, reveals how so-called facts can be used and misused when accusations are made. Is Jay a false accuser? Adnan is in a Maryland maximum-security prison. There's not much he can do about it other than continue to proclaim his innocence. Well, there's actually quite a lot more he can do inside his own head. He can grow increasingly angry, bitter, resentful, and cynical. Who could blame him? Why Do People Falsely Accuse? It's ancient going back to the beginning. According to the Genesis record of the Old Testament, the first false accusation was the devil, disguised as a serpent, lying about God to Adam and Eve. God warned them to not eat of the tree in the midst of the Garden, the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God pronounced the punishment, "Thou shalt surely die." With the insertion of one word - "not" - the devil falsely accused God by telling them they would not die. Since then, the number of false accusations is beyond our ability to compute. Christians understand the biblical truth that Christ was crucified on the basis of false accusations. The Bible says it was for envy. In the Old Testament, the 9th commandment of the 10 is "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor" Then why do people do it? I don't claim to be smart enough to know all the reasons, but I think we've all got quite a few good ideas based on our own experiences, the experiences of friends or family, and all the stories we've heard or read. Judas betrayed Christ for some money. That continues to be a big player for some I think. Greed and covetousness are major drivers for lots of people. It's manifested in divorce courtrooms all across the world I suppose. And like that sound clip from Serial, people can use kernels of truth mixed in with gobs of deceit to spin an accusation that will play to their favor. In an ugly divorce battle where the husband wants to hang onto more of his wealth and the wife wants to gain more of it...both can amplify the negative behaviors of the other. Dollars drive deceit. Finger-pointing isn't just child's play. Grown up's do it, too. All the stories we've seen on TV of the cellmate who enters a courtroom saying he heard a confession that never happened. He testifies against the defendant in exchange for a lighter sentence or some other benefit.

#ShareTheMicNow is a current campaign bringing black and white women's voices together to catalyze change. The intention of this platform is to magnify, amplify and ultimately honor the voices of black women. It is my honor to #ShareTheMic with this goddess- Santara Martin. I had the honor and privilege to meet Santara almost a decade ago as a cheerleading coach at #WoodlawnHighSchool. I walked in as a cheerleading coach and it quickly became the most loving and transformative time of my life. The power of love is magical and real. You might recognize #Woodlawn from the movie debut in 2015. Following government-mandated desegregation in 1973, Tony Nathan joins fellow African-American students at Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, AL. A violence and anger erupt in the city, Woodlawn football coach Tandy Geralds allows an outsider to speak to his players. His message of hope and love leads to a spiritual awakening that inspires star athlete Nathan, his teammates and other members of the community to overcome the hate that surrounds them. On the afternoon of January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee disappeared after leaving Woodlawn High School, where she was a popular athlete and scholar. Police looking for her questioned several people, including her current boyfriend, Don C., and ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed. Hae’s body was found partially buried in a shallow grave in Leakin Park, in Baltimore City, Maryland. Three days later, on February 12, an anonymous tip led police to put Adnan Syed at the top of their suspect list. On February 27, 1999, Jay Wilds, an acquaintance of Syed, was interviewed by police and, early on the morning of February 28, 1999, led police to Hae’s missing vehicle. Syed was arrested and charged with first degree murder. The case has been the topic of multiple podcasts, including Serial in 2014 and Undisclosed in 2015, which raised questions about the investigation and Syed’s conviction and have alleged that Syed is actually innocent. Join Lisa O’Brien and Michael Carnahan on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at 8:00 p.m. Central for a discussion of the facts surrounding Hae’s disappearance, the investigation, the evidence against Syed, the issues raised by Syed during his post-conviction challenges and the appeal by the State of Maryland challenging the 2016 decision to grant Syed’s request for a new trial. Hello and welcome to The Rob Burgess Show. I am, of course, your host, Rob Burgess. On this, our 55th episode, our guest is Asia McClain Chapman. Asia McClain Chapman will be familiar to fans of the first season of the “Serial” podcast. If you haven't listened to that yet, you should probably listen to it before you hear this episode. It will make a lot more sense. Last year, she released her book, “Confessions of a Serial Alibi,” which tells the story of her journey from ordinary library patron to a key alibi witness for Adnan Syed. In the book, McClain discusses everything from her memories of Woodlawn High School, to her conversations with several key individuals such as Adnan Syed, Rabia Chaudry, Justin Brown, Gary Proctor and former state's prosecutor Kevin Urick. Asia McClain Chapman was born on June 26, 1981, in Inglewood, California. Her parents, Carl and Michele McClain, were separated in 1986 resulting in her relocation to Baltimore, Maryland. After growing up in the Baltimore County school system, Asia graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1999 and proceeded to college. In search of a fresh start Asia made the decision to drive across the country in 2005. After several years of living in Portland, Oregon, and working full-time as a personal assistant, Asia met her now-husband Phillip Chapman in 2008. The couple married in 2009 and they are now the proud parents of three rambunctious little boys, Lucas, Alexander and Ethan Chapman. Located in Spokane, Washington, Asia spends her days as a stay-at-home mother, board secretary of Solutions Automation and small business owner of Diamond Concepts. In addition to her commitment to her businesses, Asia enjoys web-designing, writing, cooking, gardening and working with her hands in addition to participating in events with her local MOMS Club chapter and church. Adnan once issued a challenge to Sarah. He told her to test the state’s timeline of the murder by driving from Woodlawn High School to Best Buy in 21 minutes. It can’t be done, he said. So Sarah and Dana take up the challenge, and raise him one: They try to recreate the entire route that Jay said he and Adnan took on January 13th, 1999.
The trouble is, she’s nowhere to be found.
