In early December 1976, a film crew was shooting an episode of a popular television show at The Pike, a boardwalk amusement park in Long Beach, California. In order to prepare for the scene, the prop master moved what he believed to be a wax mannequin hanging from funhouse gallows; however, when he grabbed the mannequin by the arm, the limb broke off, revealing human bone and muscle tissue. After removing the body to the coroner's office to be autopsied, it was revealed that what had long thought to have been a wax museum dummy was in fact the body of a man who'd died from a gunshot wound more than six decades before his body was discovered in Long Beach. After some basic detective work, investigators learned that the mummified corpse was that of Elmer McCurdy, an early twentieth-century bank robber who was shot and killed by a sheriff's posse in Oklahoma in 1911.Removing the body from the funhouse and identifying the body allowed authorities to arrange for a proper burial, but it did little to answer the question on the minds of so many: How did the mummified body of a long-dead outlaw end up on display in a wax museum funhouse?Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesCohen, Jerry. 1976. Elmer J. McCurdy (January 1, 1880 – October 7, 1911) was an American outlaw who was killed in a shoot-out with police after robbing a train in Oklahoma in October 1911. Dubbed "The Bandit Who Wouldn't Give Up", his mummified body was first put on display at an Oklahoma funeral home and then became a fixture on the traveling carnival and sideshow circuit during the 1920s through the 1960s. After changing ownership several times, McCurdy's remains eventually wound up at The Pike amusement zone in Long Beach, California, where they were discovered by crew members for the television series The Six Million Dollar Man and positively identified in December 1976.
Hey fiends! This week we are rebroadcasting one of our fan favorite (and ours) episode on Elmer McCurdy. We will be back next week with an all new episode. ENJOY! -------------- On December 8th, 1976, the crew of the hit televisions show The Six Million Dollar Man made a gruesome discovery. While shooting in a fun house in Long Beach, California, they accidentally broke the arm off an orange day glow dummy only to discover that is wasn't a dummy at all, it was the mummified remains of a human man. Through a fascinating forensic investigation, they would discover that this man was Elmer McCurdy, the worst train and bank robber in American history. Elmer's story is wild, and we guarantee that this week, there's something for everyone. This is one of Holly's favorites, so you know it's going to be super weird. Today's True Weird Stuff - A Real Stiff Elmer McCurdy was an American outlaw who couldn't pull off a smooth heist to save his life. He tried to use his Army training with nitroglycerin to rob banks and trains, often to no avail. After accidentally robbing the wrong train in 1911, a drunken McCurdy met his demise after firing at the deputy sheriffs searching for him. And for the next 65 years, McCurdy's mummified corpse wound up being used as a traveling sideshow attraction known as "The Bandit Who Wouldn't Give Up."
This week's episode tells the story of Elmer McCurdy, a not too successful bandit of the old west who was eventually killed in Oklahoma in 1911. However, McCurdy's story didn't end then. After being embalmed, no one wanted to pay for his burial, and he went on display at the funeral home. Elmer's desiccated eventually toured the United States in various ways until it was forgotten that he was actually a real person and not a wax figure. The truth of his identity wasn't discovered until the 1970's when he was discovered while filming a TV episode in an amusement park dark ride. Take a listen and find out all about Elmer, who's like only got more interesting after he was dead.
In 1976, a television crew filming an episode of the show “The Six Million Dollar Man” descended on a rundown funhouse in Long Beach, California. While filming, they accidentally broke the arm off a wax dummy. Except...it wasn't a wax dummy. It was a real body. The body of a notorious train robber from the early 1900s, named Elmer McCurdy. Check out the Atlas entry for Elmer McCurdy's grave. For more information on Elmer, we recommend Mark Svenvold's book “Elmer McCurdy: The Misadventures in Life and Afterlife of an American Outlaw.”

Elmer McCurdy's story is both fascinating and tragic. His life and posthumous fame offer a mix of the Old West, crime, and morbid curiosity. His life was that of a minor outlaw who, due to a series of macabre events, achieved a form of postmortem fame far beyond his criminal activities. His story serves as a unique case study in the realms of criminal history, forensic science, and the ethics of death and entertainment. Elmer McCurdy had a troubled life and died in a shoot-out. His body got embalmed, became part of a traveling crime museum, then was bought by an amusement ride operator. Marc Hartzman, from WeirdHistorian.com and the author of Chasing Ghosts: A Tour of Our Fascination with Spirits and the Supernatural is back, with the weird story for October, and for the second month in a row he features a travelling dead person. This time it's dead outlaw Elmer McCurdy. Now you can listen to selected items from The Stuph File Program on the new audio service, Audea. A great way to keep up with many of the interviews from the show and take a trip down memory lane to when this show began back in 2009, with over 700 selections to choose from! This week's guest slate is presented by Kirk Bennett, a cinematographer and director. He's currently writing and directing a Hitchcock style thriller called Entity.
In 1910, a train car thief popped out of nowhere and became a noteworthy robber in the history of the wild west. Using his training in explosives from the US military Elmer McCurdy robbed a series of trains and a bank in the central and southwest United States. However, his career as a thief is the least exciting thing about him. It is the life he found after death that has people talking. Let's say this; it took nearly three of his lifetimes before McCurdy was properly buried. At that time, Elmer had seen much of the Continental United States and was seen by most Americans, for that matter. This is the unbelievable story of the life, death, and life after death of bank robber Elmer McCurdy. Tom Cruise has nothing on Thomas Fitzpatrick: the man who got drunk, stole a plane and landed it outside a bar just to prove a point. After telling his story, the Deep Lore Boys discuss a heathen rooster being burned at the stake and the little-known Salem Tomato Trials. Then, Elmer McCurdy takes the spotlight; or, rather, his corpse does. But sshhhh... everyone thinks it's just a wax figure. Elmer McCurdy was a pretty terrible bank robber, and his death during a shootout with police back in the early 1900s seemed like a fairly unsurprising end to his life. The thing is, Elmer's story continues for another 60ish years after his death. You guys are not going to believe this one. Strung up in the corner of a roadside amusement park fun house was the figure of a man coated so many times with phosphorus paint that it glowed in the dimly lit space. It was alarmingly lifelike, and yet in the several years the figure was on display, no one dared question if it was anything more than a mannequin.
Bonus episode, comin' in hot! Join us as Kevin seeks sponsorship, Hailey laments mouth nickels and pursues an alternative, and the two discuss an unlikely rise to fame.
