CHRIST COMMUNITY CHURCH MEMPHIS
Teach Us to Pray | On Earth as it is in Heaven | Matthew 6:10 | Coleton Segars

CHRIST COMMUNITY CHURCH MEMPHIS

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2026 38:44

Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done Introduction In this message, Coleton walks through one of the most important lines in the Lord's Prayer: “Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” — Matthew 6:10 Jesus is not giving His followers empty religious words to repeat. He is teaching them how to partner with God in the renewal of the world. This prayer is not passive resignation. It is an invitation into participation with God. Coleton structures the sermon around three major questions: What is Jesus telling us to ask for? Why doesn't God just do it without our prayers? What does this mean for our prayers practically? Throughout the message, Coleton emphasizes a central truth: prayer matters because God has chosen to work through the prayers of His people. 1. What Is Jesus Telling Us to Ask For? We Are Asking for God's Kingdom and God's Will Coleton explains that Jesus teaches us to pray for two connected realities: God's Kingdom to come God's will to be done These cannot be separated. God's Kingdom is the place where God's will is actually happening. Coleton uses a quote from Dallas Willard to explain this idea clearly: “God's own ‘kingdom,' or ‘rule,' is the range of His effective will, where what He wants done is done.” — Dallas Willard, The Divine Conspiracy The sermon explains that every person has a small “kingdom” — a sphere where their choices shape reality. God's Kingdom is the sphere where His desires, purposes, goodness, and authority reign completely. So when Jesus teaches us to pray, “Your kingdom come,” He is teaching us to pray: Let more of what God wants happen here. Let more of heaven invade earth. Let the qualities of God's reign spread into places where they are absent. Coleton says we see the qualities of God's Kingdom most clearly in Jesus. When Jesus walked the earth, He announced: “The Kingdom of God has come upon you.” Then He demonstrated what that Kingdom looked like. Coleton walks through example after example from the Gospels: Abundance Where There Was Scarcity John 2 Mark 6 Jesus multiplies provision and turns lack into overflowing abundance. Truth Where There Was Hypocrisy John 3 Matthew 23 Jesus exposes false religion and reveals truth that leads to life. Freedom Where There Was Bondage Mark 5 Jesus delivers people oppressed by evil and restores them to wholeness. Healing Where There Was Disease Matthew 8 Mark 5 The Kingdom of God pushes back sickness and brokenness. Restoration Where There Was Alienation John 4 Jesus restores dignity and relationship to the Samaritan woman. Hospitality Where There Was Hatred Luke 19 Jesus welcomes Zacchaeus when everyone else rejected him. Life Where There Was Death John 11 Jesus raises Lazarus and reveals that death does not get the final word. Hope Where There Was Despair Mark 5 Jesus enters impossible situations and brings hope again. Love Where There Was Hatred Acts 9 The Gospel transforms persecutors into followers of Jesus. Justice Where There Was Oppression Acts 16 God breaks chains and overturns systems of darkness. Coleton repeatedly reminds the church: When Jesus extended the Kingdom, He extended these qualities into people's lives. So praying “Your Kingdom come” means praying: Bring freedom here. Bring healing here. Bring justice here. Bring peace here. Bring restoration here. Bring hope here. This prayer is asking for the realities of heaven to invade earth. 2. Why Doesn't God Just Do It Without Our Prayers? This becomes the heart of the sermon. Coleton addresses a question many people quietly wrestle with: “If God is sovereign, why does prayer matter at all?” His answer is simple and profound: Because God has sovereignly chosen to work through people. God Has Always Worked Through Human Partnership Coleton goes back to Genesis. God did not need Adam and Eve to tend the garden. He could have done everything Himself. Yet He intentionally gave humanity responsibility, authority, and participation. God chose partnership. Coleton quotes Dallas Willard again: “We are meant to exercise our ‘rule' only in union with God, as He acts with us.” Human beings were designed to work alongside God in stewarding creation. Prayer is part of that design. Prayer Is Not an Afterthought — It Is Part of the Way God Ordered the World Coleton strongly emphasizes: God does not need intercessors. He chooses intercessors. He quotes Tyler Staton: “Prayer is the means by which we push back the curse that's infected the world and infected us.” This is one of the central ideas of the sermon: Prayer is how God has chosen for His Kingdom to advance. Coleton gives practical analogies: God could have nourished us without food — but He chose food. God could have sustained life without oxygen and blood — but He chose those means. God could have worked without prayer — but He chose prayer. Prayer is not magic. Prayer is partnership. Your Prayers Actually Matter Coleton passionately confronts the idea that prayer changes nothing. He says believing prayer does not matter fundamentally misunderstands how God designed the world. He points to passages showing the consequences of prayerlessness: We Miss Things When We Don't Pray 2 Chronicles 16:9 We Make Bad Decisions Without Seeking God Joshua 9:14 Some Things Do Not Happen Apart From Prayer Mark 9:29 Coleton makes an important clarification: This is not because God is angry or withholding. It is because this is the structure God established. He quotes Charles Spurgeon: “If you may have everything by asking, and nothing without asking, I beg you to see how absolutely vital prayer is.” Even Jesus intercedes now for believers. If prayer did not matter, Jesus would not still be praying. 3. What This Means for Our Prayers There Is Power in Your Praying Coleton wants believers to leave with confidence. Not confidence in themselves. Not confidence in perfect wording. Confidence that God has chosen to work through prayer. He says: Prayer works powerfully because God has set it up that way. Coleton quotes Skye Jethani: “We are active participants with God in the writing, directing, design, and action that unfolds.” Prayer is participation in God's work in the world. Because of that, believers should actually expect God to move when they pray. Leonard Ravenhill's quote drives this home: “You cannot estimate the power of prayer… because He has committed Himself to answer it.” 4. Practical Ways to Pray “Your Kingdom Come” Coleton closes the sermon with deeply practical guidance. Pray for Kingdom Qualities Where They Are Missing He encourages believers to look for brokenness and pray specifically for God's Kingdom to invade those places. Tyler Staton's quote summarizes this beautifully: “Ask for Jesus to come anywhere and everywhere you know God's kingdom of love and peace is lacking.” Examples: Pray for friends who do not know Jesus. Pray for healing. Pray for Memphis. Pray for injustice. Pray for broken families. Pray for mental and emotional struggles. Coleton encourages practices like: Prayer walks Prayer drives People watching and praying Using reminders like a “Pray for Memphis” hat Prayer becomes a lifestyle of seeing the world through the eyes of God's Kingdom. Pray the Promises of God Coleton teaches believers to pray Scripture because God is faithful to His promises. He quotes John Wesley: “The best we can say to God in prayer is, what he hath said to us.” He then walks through promises believers can pray confidently: Comfort “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4 Freedom and New Life “If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 Peace Philippians 4:6–7 Greater Works John 14:12 Rest Matthew 11:28–29 Provision Matthew 6:33 Philippians 4:19 Malachi 3:10 Wisdom James 1:5 Restoration Joel 2:25–26 Isaiah 61:3–4 Strength 2 Corinthians 12:9 Isaiah 40:31 Coleton encourages believers to pray these promises boldly because they reveal God's heart and His Kingdom. Pray for the Things Jesus Did Coleton says the Gospels reveal what the Kingdom of God looks like. So believers should read about Jesus: healing, restoring, forgiving, freeing, reconciling, and pray for those same Kingdom realities to happen around them today. Trust God When Prayers Aren't Answered the Way You Want Coleton ends with honesty and pastoral wisdom. Not every prayer is answered the way we expect. Paul prayed for the “thorn in the flesh” to leave, but God said: “My grace is sufficient for you.” Sometimes God's Kingdom advances through weakness rather than the removal of suffering. Coleton reminds the church: The apostles experienced miracles. The apostles also experienced tragedy. Yet they never stopped believing in prayer. The call of the believer is not to understand everything perfectly, but to trust God in the mystery. Final Challenge Coleton closes by bringing everything back to one foundational truth: Prayer has power because this is how God designed the world to function. Just as: food satisfies hunger, water quenches thirst, oxygen sustains life, God has chosen prayer as one of the primary ways His Kingdom advances in the earth. Jesus teaches His followers to pray because prayer truly matters. Discipleship Group Questions When you hear the phrase “Your Kingdom come,” what do you naturally think about, and how did this message expand your understanding of it? Which “Kingdom quality” from Jesus' ministry (healing, restoration, justice, freedom, hope, etc.) do you most long to see break into your own life or your community right now? Why do you think God chose to work through human partnership and prayer instead of simply doing everything Himself? What keeps you from believing your prayers truly matter, and how did this sermon challenge that mindset? What is one practical way you can begin intentionally praying for God's Kingdom to come in Memphis, your family, your workplace, or your neighborhood this week? Culture of Gospel Share this with someone in your life who doesn't know Jesus What if prayer is not about escaping the world, but partnering with God to heal it? Jesus taught that God's Kingdom brings hope where there is despair, healing where there is brokenness, and love where there is hatred—and He invites ordinary people to become part of that renewal.

Fight on your knees, win on your feet!"The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds." 2 Corinthians 10:4 This powerful slogan resonates deeply, reminding us that true strength is found in humility and prayer. Just as a fortified castle stands strong against external threats with its raised drawbridge, so too can we fortify our spirits through the divine armor God provides. Take a moment to envision each piece of this armor: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. As you picture them adorning you, remember that they are not just metaphors; they are essential tools in our journey of faith.Consider the story of King Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20, where he faced overwhelming odds. Instead of retreating or fighting with earthly weapons, he turned to worship and prayer. The people came together, glorifying God and seeking His guidance. Their unity in prayer transformed their fear into faith, demonstrating that when we approach God earnestly, even the fiercest storms can be calmed. Ephesians 6:11-13 says, "Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm."The truth is, “the devil trembles when he sees the weakest saint upon his knees,” as William Cowper wisely remarked. Every time we seek the Lord, we activate a power far greater than ourselves. Ephesians 6:11-13 encourages us to put on the full armor of God, enabling us to stand firm against adversities. Remember, our weapons are not of this world; they are richly endowed with spiritual might (2 Corinthians 10:4), and they ultimately lead us to victory (Romans 16:20).When we pray, we are not just communicating with God; we are entering a battleground where spiritual strongholds are broken. Imagine your prayers as arrows, piercing through the darkness, carrying light and hope. Each prayer elevates our faith and brings us closer to fulfilling God's purpose in our lives. You were indeed “born on a battlefield,” as Leonard Ravenhill aptly noted, but rest assured that your success lies in earnest supplication. Amen. Romans 16:20 says, "The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you." Amen.Prayer for the Day! Heavenly Father, we thank You for the armor You provide and the strength found in prayer. Help us to continually seek You on our knees, trusting in Your goodness and power. May we embody courage in our daily walk and claim victory over personal and corporate strongholds. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.https://maglife.org

In this sermon, Pastor Nathan calls the church into a holy reset through fasting and revival, inviting us into a focused season of consecration from January 4–25. Fasting is not about earning God's favor or manipulating outcomes—it's about surrender. In a culture of comfort and constant consumption, fasting weakens the flesh and sharpens our spiritual hunger, creating space to hear God clearly and encounter His presence deeply. Whether abstaining from food or laying down another comfort, the heart of fasting is dependence—declaring that God alone sustains us.The message presses deeper into the connection between surrender and revival, reminding us that fire only falls where there is fuel. Pastor Nathan challenges the church to let go of habits, comforts, and patterns that quench the Spirit and instead embrace prayer, repentance, and corporate hunger. Drawing from Scripture, personal stories, and voices like Leonard Ravenhill, this sermon is a wake-up call: revival does not begin in crowds—it begins in hearts. As the church fasts, prays, and fills the altar again, the Holy Spirit ignites a fire meant not just to transform individuals, but to impact an entire community. Why does revival seem so rare today—and what would Leonard Ravenhill say about the modern church? In episode 124 of the Eyes on Jesus Podcast, Drew and Tim unpack the timeless warnings and prophetic challenges from Ravenhill's classic Why Revival Tarries and compare them to the state of today's church. This is a bold, honest, and deeply convicting conversation about prayer, holiness, and the cost of genuine discipleship.Ravenhill famously wrote, “The church is dying on its feet because it's not living on its knees.” That theme echoes throughout this episode as the guys explore why prayer—not programming—is the true engine of revival. You'll hear why revival can't be manufactured, marketed, or branded… it must be birthed in brokenness, repentance, and a people who hunger for God more than anything else this world offers. They discuss the urgency of the moment, the danger of celebrity-driven Christianity, and why entertainment has replaced intercession in many churches. And most importantly—they call believers back to personal revival: a daily pursuit of holiness, intimacy, and the presence of Jesus. If you sense there must be “more” than what modern Christianity offers… this episode is for you.Check out our brand-new merch store! https://eyesonjesuspodcast-shop.fourthwall.com/Get all our links in one easy place! https://linktr.ee/eyesonjesuspodcastGet the Eyes on Jesus 90 Day Discernment Devotionalhttps://a.co/d/3v8963sJoin our Group on Facebook- Eyes on Jesus podcast community https://www.facebook.com/groups/eyesonjesuspodcastEmail feedback, questions or show topic ideas to eyesonjesuspodcast@outlook.comFor more information on Drew Barker: Follow Drew on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/pastordrewbarkerDrew's church's website https://yes.online/For more information on Tim Ferrara: Get all his links in one place- to his social media, all 3 of his books, and more at https://linktr.ee/discerning_dad

Our lives are made up of decades, years, minutes, and seconds, and there are 86,400 seconds in each day. Time is an immeasurably valuable commodity, a finite resource we can spend, invest, or waste just like money. We are all given a limited amount of time on earth to live, and then we die. In God's grace and mercy, He knows when that time is for each person. As the awareness of sin marches on, the seconds of our lives tick away. Every one of those seconds is a step on the road to eternity.Show notes:Quotes in this episode were from King David, Leonard Ravenhill, and Dave Hunt.Recommended reading: Why Revival Tarries  by Leonard Ravenhill                 Whatever Happened to Heaven  by Dave Hunt    Link to The Berean Call, the ministry founded by Dave Hunt for more solid Bible teaching and resources.Text us for prayer, comments, or ministry questions.Connect with us at: concerningthetimes.com

Spiritual Ancestry; The Heritage Most Believers Never Discover | Word for Now | Sep 29, 2025 | CR

Crystal Rivers | Word for Now | Sep 29, 2025 There is a profound heritage in the faith that many believers remain unaware of, and this ignorance creates a fundamental exposure problem in contemporary Christianity. The Nigerian church, for instance, once carried tremendous spiritual power through pioneers like P.A. Elton, who in the 1960s-80s laid out detailed blueprints, protocols, and structures for the nation's spiritual destiny. His vision included specific feast days, prayer watches, and kingdom-focused ministry that stood in stark contrast to the prosperity gospel that later infiltrated and weakened the church's foundation. When genuine seekers touch the burden of God for their nation today, they often find themselves unknowingly fulfilling the same prophetic patterns these spiritual fathers established, because they're touching the same heart of God. Understanding spiritual ancestry is crucial on two levels. First, recognize that generational curses are real—someone who experiments with substances may unknowingly activate an inherited addiction that a great-uncle struggled with, or touching immorality may awaken dormant generational bondage. Just because sin hasn't manifested yet doesn't mean the seed isn't present, waiting for the right conditions. But second, and more importantly, there is also godly spiritual ancestry. When certain spiritually-charged resources encounter someone with "ancestry" in that spiritual bloodline—books like "Good Morning Holy Spirit," "Adventures with God" by John G. Lake, materials from the God's Generals era—something awakens. Deep calls to deep. A hunger ignites that had been dormant. The harsh reality is that many of today's spiritual giants who cried out for revival—like Leonard Ravenhill or P.A. Elton—never saw their visions fully realized in their lifetimes. Their disciples became the ones God used for movements like Brownsville and other revivals. This should humble current believers while also revealing how desperately the investment is needed. The issue isn't a lack of hunger in most Christians; it's a lack of sophistication, protocol, and exposure to what true worship and sacrifice look like. Many believers are spiritually illiterate, primitive in their approach to God—not because they don't care, but because they've never been exposed to the heritage, the standards, the depth that previous generations walked in. The core truth that must grip every believer is this: genuine love for souls comes only from genuine love for Jesus. The greatest need isn't better evangelism techniques or more passionate preaching about Him—it's being possessed by Him. The gospel without the unction of His presence falls to the ground powerless. Christianity isn't waiting for a new definition but for a new demonstration. Before anyone can hear the command to "go," they must first hear and continually respond to the invitation to "come"—to come to Jesus, to spend time with Him, to be head over heels in love not with the idea of Jesus, but with the living, vibrant experience of Him daily. Ministry done without this foundation becomes humanitarian work at best, and the protection against burnout and distraction is simple dependency on Him renewed each day. The watchmen's conference that was recently held carries months of encounters in its sessions. The old-timers who showed up—disciples of these spiritual fathers—carry keys that this generation desperately needs. Study the God's Generals. Listen to the materials on revival history. Let the standard they held challenge the compromised metrics of modern ministry. And understand that your lack of hunger may simply mean you haven't yet collided with your spiritual ancestry—those specific resources and revelations that will awaken what God has already placed in your bloodline in Christ. No significa mejorar nuestro comportamiento.

Our nations, cities and homes need the revival of God. We have turned so far away, and calling "evil good and good evil." Our churches need to get serious about prayer. There are inner core prayers which means, you pray first for the members of your family, their daily needs and protection. Then prayer moves to outer core prayers, meaning, other people's needs of every kind. Then of course other matters that beg for prayer. I live like this in prayer. This is how I typically pray and I know they are not lazy prayers, or reptitive prayers mouthed without heart. I stand for my family and every one and everything I pray for and about. Yet, every now and then I begin to feel a lessening in those prayers, as if there is a thinning out of them. I become instantly aware of it and begin to lay things aside. Over the past couple of months I felt this happening to me. I kept my prayers small. I started to feel a very deep little fire burning within and day by day getting hotter, and enlarging.I could not get the prayer out and today I found myself wordless in prayer, and "While I was musing the fire burned." Then all of a sudden I cried out, "Lord, I need a cave! I need the Cave of Adullam!" Then waves of spiritually charged words began to flow out that were firey and hot. By the time I was finished, I felt something lift off of me. I felt lighter and in-flooded with the Holy Spirit and refreshing.Sometimes God comes around and wants you to put everything aside. He wants you to let things out of your heart buried so deeply, to come rushing out like fiery streams. When you leave that cave you will leave something behind and emerge in newness and light. God can take care of the universe without you from time to time. He wants you to know this."The secret of praying is praying in secret." - Leonard Ravenhill

Before we even got started prayer was made that it would flow with only what the Holy Spirit wanted us to speak about. We began with the big question that not only Americans are asking and wondering about, but also the whole world at large. What is going to happen to America? We spoke about Satan's long range plans from ancient times to bring about a one world government. His schemes and ways. We spoke a while on his so-called master plans. But then the flow of the Holy Spirit began. At one point the question arose, "What can we do to be ready?" There is only one way to be ready and that is to give your life over to Jesus Christ in full surrender. To trust God fully, read His word, and believe with ironclad faith. Jesus Christ is coming again sooner than ever and time is closing in. The time is now to receive eternal salvation. America is not mentioned in scripture. There is coming a "New Heaven and a New Earth wherein dwelleth rightousness." 2 Peter 3:13." “My goal is GOD HIMSELF. Not joy, not peace, not even blessing but HIMSELF...my GOD.” ― Leonard Ravenhill

“The Lord whom you seek. We're not seeking him, we're seeking revival, we're seeking healing, we're seeking miracles. It's not that we need. If we get God we get all that's needed. And revival is when God comes down.” “The church has never had more equipment than she has now, and she never had less power.” “I want to be one of the ten most wanted men in hell. I want the demons to be able to say, Jesus I know and Ravenhill I know…” Leonard Ravenhill was born the eighteenth of June, 1907, in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. At his conversion, it wasn't simply his sin that provoked his revelation of God, but rather he saw that his father had a spiritual reality that he himself did not have. So at the age of fifteen, he came under conviction and cried out to the Lord and was converted. This kind of revelation of God would continue to mark his ministry throughout the rest of his life. From that point on, he was engaged in evangelism, personal witness, and serious prayer both on his own and in group prayer meetings. In 1958, Leonard and his family moved to Minnesota after they felt a leading from God, and he taught at Bethany College of Missions near Minneapolis. In the 80s, he moved to Texas, a short distance from Last Days Ministries Ranch, where again he would often teach classes, and also where he would spend the remainder of his life. While in Texas, he mentored the late Keith Green, and today, the two are buried about twenty feet from each other in the same cemetery. “I've said it many times, I'll say it again that no man is greater than his prayer life.” -------------- Apologetics, Debate, Bible Discussions, Evangelism, and much more A Bible study on personal works and fruit bearing - "The mystic fruit bowl" Mark 7:5-23 - https://youtu.be/kw7QiLQMQ_M?si=eSOYcF1Ffco6-inI (Discussing discipleship) Bible study on Luke 9:60-62 "Let the dead bury the dead" - https://www.youtube.com/live/BkWtkOrEs-Q?si=y-zyqNGfWi3kzVu2 To know more on how to be saved, what are the requirements and such, please see our playlist on the Gospel and Eternal Security (assurance of salvation) - https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3pJdCnnwrEeCQOCTTmDW1GjUYxpd44DG&si=_rT-lThl0klHt5Cd Our Ministries Website - https://christiancoffeetime.ca/ 1John 5:20) "And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. But today, you are likely to 126 sermons on the subject of the church before you hear 2 teachings concerning the Kingdom. Something has gone terribly wrong.“The world is not waiting for a new definition of Christianity. It's waiting for a new demonstration of true Christianity. In the First Century, while He was on this earth, Jesus cleansed the temple; if He came back today, He would cleanse most of America's pulpits from their religious humanism.”Leonard RavenhillWe hope you can be with us this weekend as we introduce our major new teaching series on “The Mysteries of the Kingdom of God”.

Therefore, Jesus says, since they were lukewarm, He was going to vomit them out of His mouth. In this stirring sermon, Leonard Ravenhill talks about the Laodicean church and its similarities to the modern church of today.Learn more about the Bravehearted Voices Podcast and how you can be discipled and grow spiritually by visiting braveheartedvoices.com
