Equal access to quality writing education has been a longstanding challenge in the United States and not enough has been done to move the field forward in recent years. In this report, we at 826 National aim to bring writing education to the forefront of public, policy, and funding conversations by examining its current state and issuing a call to action to the field. In the summer and fall of 2020, we interviewed 19 writing education experts, including authors, researchers, and educators, about the current state of writing education in the United States. We distill their reflections on the benefits, challenges, and inequities of writing education, and then draw on those reflections to outline recommendations for the field. Today Evan, Kris, and I sat down and talk the new Mortal Kombat movie. For the record, I loved it and I’m willing to fight about it. But Evan came in hot with a rewrite that is so much better than the movie itself. We are now accepting donations so we can film this movie properly. We also talk getting meaning out of music, my favorite game “is it racist”, and what we’re watching currently. Anyways, it was a great episode and I hope y’all enjoy it! Our first major project of 2021 concludes with the delivery of a pitch package for Age of Monsters, a crossover between the Pacific Rim and MonsterVerse franchises. On this episode, we recap the project and discuss what we learned from the writing process.
We just watched Godzilla vs. Kong! With the experience still fresh, we immediately hopped on the phone to discuss how this latest MonsterVerse installment impacts development on our story. A heads up: the audio quality on this episode is going to be a bit worse than usual, as we weren't on our usual mic setup.
This week we’re remixing The Fast & The Furious, finding a new direction for The Terminator, and winning the Power Rangers an Oscar.
Today's episode is just a series of prompts and inspiration. Take your time with this one. Pause it. Come back to it. Enjoy the process of unleashing your creativity. This week we’re finding a new direction for James Bond, auditioning the next Indiana Jones, and giving some Star Wars characters a second chance.
This week we’re saving Disney's live-action adaptations, finding something nightmarish for John Wick to fight, and charting a new timeline for the Pirates of the Caribbean.
This week we're pitching some new spins on an Aliens movie, Adam Sandler takes on Godzilla, and we find an inspiring sports story set in the Ghostbusters universe.
This week we assemble pitches on potential Tron spin-offs, a Fast & Furious, and a high-concept story about aliens who invade through dreams.
This is the audio version of a live virtual panel that we ran as part of ForceFest 2020, a Star Wars fan convention. In this episode, we take the Star Wars universe on a genre tour, pitching a time travel story, a rom com, an animal adventure, and a haunted Death Star.
This week we break the story on an Oscar bait Jurassic movie, found footage Batman, a Marvel anthology, and a community submitted pitch from our High Concept Deck.
Let's Write returns to the deck with three pitches: a sequel to a particularly unique musical, an adaptation of a classic toy line, and a Star Wars prequel.

Have you ever dreamed of writing the Great American (or wherever) Novel? Have you ever read a book and was disappointed and said 'Hey I could have written that better'?Well, here is your chance. Most of us are still locked up in our homes and have done just about everything to occupy our time. This is the PERFECT time to try out your writing skills. This episode (and Part 2 coming in a couple weeks) discusses my own method for writing my gay sports novel 'Northridge High Football Camp' and it's sequel 'The Guys of Northridge'. I can't say how other authors have produced their work, but the method that I used I think is a very learnable technique. So why not give it a try? In this Part 1, I talk about the genre of your book, about establishing your main characters and creating milestone scenes to bring your characters toward the conclusion of your story.
Let's get writing that book together.

There are a lot of different ways to write a best seller, but the three of the most common features are these: THREE MAIN HINTS TO MAKE A BEST SELLER You have to engage the reader. You have to keep them hooked. Make them loyal. Easier said than done, right? Maybe not. Think of what your story is about. Can you pitch the idea in less than fifty words? Less than twenty-five? Can you gel its essence down into a quick pitch? That's the high concept. High Concept is a Really a big Question What's your big dramatic question? Will the kid survive the evil wizard? Will the young reporter fall in love with Mr. Bondage? Will a resourceful young adult survive a pixie apocalypse? Let the reader know from the very beginning what your story is about. Will Harry Potter survive the dark wizard Voldemort? Will Eleanor and Park fall in love? Who will die in this John Green novel? Keeping the reader hooked This is where the obstacles and complications come in. How do we keep our heroine challenged? What is in his or her way? Will her big dramatic question change into a new dramatic question. MAKING EMOTION The other element is that we have to have a character who responds to things emotionally. That's what makes the story resonate. Our character already has a want. There are complications to the want. But more than that, the hero has to have intense emotions and reactions to those complications. When Harry Potter has to dig deep and be brave, when he has to look in the Mirror of Desire and confront his deepest longings, when he has to face the wizard, know his friends might die (and on and on), he reacts emotionally and intensely and the stakes of his decisions have emotional consequences that elevate the reader and incite empathy. Because we feel so connected to that character, we become loyal to that character. When we have that connection and loyalty? That book? It becomes something magical. Writing Tip of the Pod The best books hook the readers early, elevate the stakes, and make us connected to the character. Dog Tip for Life. Do not stay still. Go after your dreams. Random Thought Rundown If you listen to the podcast, you'll hear: Carrie scream in the car and take the Lord's name in vain as she sees bear cubs run across the road. Shaun cranky about border patrol agents Big foot talk More beautiful weirdness. SHOUT OUT The music we’ve clipped and shortened in this podcast is awesome and is made available through the Creative Commons License. Here’s a link to that and the artist’s website. Who is this artist and what is this song? It’s “Night Owl” by Broke For Free. WRITING NEWS IN THE WOODS – READ AN EXCERPT, ORDER NOW! My new book, IN THE WOODS, is out! Gasp! It’s with Steve Wedel. It’s scary and one of Publisher’s Weekly’s Buzz Books for Summer 2019. There’s an excerpt of it there and everything! But even cooler (for me) they’ve deemed it buzz worthy! Buzz worthy seems like an awesome thing to be deemed! You can order this bad boy, which might make it have a sequel. The sequel would be amazing. Believe me, I know. It features caves and monsters and love. Because doesn’t every story? THE NETHERLANDS IS AWESOME After Obsession is making a big freaking splash in the amazing Netherlands. Very Short Update
Saluton! Ne estas kulero…Welcome to Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. I am your host Tyson Saner. I've got a show for you that's bursting with content for your ears. Earlier today I was thinking about how strange it is that many of us refer to soundcasts as "shows"…because, aside from those with a visual component such as video or something like it…mostly soundcasts are…well, SOUND…You can't really see sound…just that which it effects. So podcasts, like radio shows before them, would more accurately be referred to as "tells"…but it's silly to think about re-naming everything simply because of logic. I mean, I'd have to re-brand my other soundcast "Anti Social Show" to "Anti Social Tell"…and that's just weird…the acronym sucks too…it's "AST"…I don't think that's a thing. I Googled it and it's not a word…it's not an English word at any rate. Let's see. If I put it through Google Translate, I see it means "branch" in…German. So, mystery solved. Anyway, in this edition of Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, I've got clips from The TryPod, The One In Twenty Show, You Made it Weird with Pete Holmes, Let's Write An Episode, Dr. Drew After Dark, and Thick Skin with Jeff Ross. We've also got a TRIPLE dose of Raging Moderate Will Durst's "Burst O Durst" segments. That's right, THREE! There's the latest edition of "Let's Review" from Succotash executive producer Marc Hershon, And, of course, a reading from TrumPoetry.com, our Fake Sponsor with a real website with real poetry. It's a lot of content so let's get to it CLIPS The TryPodThe Try Guys have swam with sharks, survived in the wild, shocked themselves with birthing simulators, and risked their lives for their videos. In this weekly podcast they dissect their experiences as internet creators and best friends who have made a living failing upwards. Our clips is from their first epi which dropped back in May of this year, entitled "Sex Tapes & First Dates". Let's Write an EpisodeComedian Tommy Oler and friends get together to perform and write fake episodes of your favorite shows from the past and present, audio drama style. Listen as some of your most beloved characters go on adventures never before possible. Our clip is from their second-ever episode, featuring Tommy, KC Shorina, and NIck Cox, who get together to write their own episode of the hit 90's TV show "Saved By The Bell. Dr. Drew After DarkDr. Drew Pinsky is a board-certified internist and one of America's most trusted physicians. On Dr. Drew After Dark, he shares his professional opinion about all of the weirdest stuff on the Internet. The clip we're featuring hails from Epi8, which first hit the web back in April of this year. In it is a miniature recreation of "Loveline", a late-night radio advice program that Dr. Drew hosted with radio personality and podcaster Adam Carolla…on which Andy Dick had been a guest multiple times. … You Made It Weird with Pete HolmesA weekly comedy interview podcast, You Made It Weird originated under the premise that Holmes would ask his guest, usually a fellow comedian, about three "weird" things he knew about them, but the show has since evolved into a much more loose conversation about such complex topics as comedy, religion, and sexuality. Everybody has secret weirdness, comedian Pete Holmes gets comedians to share theirs including, in an episode from the end of last year, the unique, weird, and wonderful comedy brain of Paula Poundstone. The One in Twenty Show An interview-based podcast hosted by Evan Rogers, The One in Twenty Show is rooted in finding the next one in twenty individuals who are pursuing their passions with success. Our clip is from Epi38 from this past May, and features guest Jen Matichuk, a multi-faceted creator from Canada — most known for her work with Rhett and Link as a brand coordinator and producer on Good Mythical Morning. Thick Skin with Jeff Ross"Life is hard. Let's get through it together." Join Jeff Ross, The Roastmaster General, as he takes on "Touchy Subjects", interviews people smarter than him and pays tribute to the recently deceased, so they can properly Roast In Peace. The clip we're featuring was from a show just a couple of weeks ago, entitled "Why I Roasted Anne Frank" on what would have been her 90th Birthday. And there's another "tell over and done with." No, that doesn't sound good at all…I don't think it will catch on any time soon. You know what could though? This soundcast. How?…I haven't worked that part out much beyond a semi-aggressive word-of-mouth campaign…For example, I have a show on my YouTube channel called Tyson Saner: Gamer where I play video games and give commentary of my experiences. At the end of every episode I mention Succotash The Comedy Souncast Soundcast and how you can find its website at www.succotashshow.com if one was so inclined to do so. I also mention Anti Social Show a podcast I co-host that, assuming you have heard this episode from the beginning, you may well remember me mentioning it…and finally I mention a little show called Gaming Outside My Comfort Zone which is a gaming show that my wife hosts on her YouTube channel which is called "SexxyLaura27Games". That's my attempt at giving word-of-mouth about this and other ongoing projects…and THIS is my attempt to do that very thing in your ears if you are listening…or hearing that little voice in your head that you hear while reading things - If and/or when you are reading things in your head. And if you were so inclined to tell anyone about Succotash the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast you would be performing an intense act of kindness toward us…and we would appreciate that a great deal…for that is what we mean when we ask you to Please Pass The Succotash… — Tyson Saner

The writing goes on.
Vicki Amorose is a performance artist, writer, educator and expert discussioner. Active in the local art community in Eugene, and author of the book "Art-Write: The Writing Guide for Visual Artists," she got her start in the post-punk scene in San Francisco in the 1980’s and admonishes us to remember what artist Nayland Blake has said in conversation with the brilliant Sharon Louden: "The magic of that era is that we threw the parties we wanted to go to.” Lest we forget! A fun fact about Vicki, is that she was part of the Church of the SubGenius and was featured in the documentary “J.R. 'Bob' Dobbs and the Church of the SubGenius,” which premiered at this year’s SXSW in Austin, TX. Agnese happened to be there and was able to go to a screening so we had a moment talking about that. Eugene Contemporary Art wants to encourage art criticism about the significant amount of contemporary work that is being made in our region. Yet, the writing we see here is largely journalistic and promotional, summaries of art events and shows that don’t go deeper into the discourse. To change this, Vicki will be leading the workshop “Write About Visual Art" presented by Eugene Contemporary Art in partnership with City of Eugene Cultural Services, promoting a departure from the old paradigm of criticism as judgement to open up new forms, inviting writers of all kinds to turn their focus to visual art. Vicki wants to change the connotations of the word “critical” which in Eugene, and probably in many other places around the country, is taken to suggest severely judgmental and mean. The problem with the “It’s all good” attitude is that you don’t go any deeper than what meets the eye, and sometimes you don’t even get that far, unknowingly perpetuating norms dictated by an abstracted academy or art market. We discuss Darren Jones’ essay “Art in America: The Critical Dustbowl,” recently published by the New Art Examiner, and made possible by the Arts Writers Grant Program from Creative Capital and the Andy Warhol Foundation, that supports the work of writers specifically. Which of course leads us to the ever-relevant topic of money and artist compensation. Courtney was quoted in Jones' article, and it takes up the place and impact of critical art writing outside New York and L.A. Art writing tends to neglect small towns in favor of urban centers. What is written about is what makes art history, so what stories will not get told? If the art is not written about, does it even exist? Who should benefit from art writing? What can it do for artists? Does art criticism have to be academic and theory-laden? Vicki explains the difference between critical writing and descriptive writing. As a writer, you should consider your audience and not just write for the internet. Who are you writing for? The off-putting language of much art writing acts as a shield, deflecting interest rather than drawing people in. Referencing Gilda Williams, Vicki says that bad art writing comes from fear and lack of understanding, rather than malicious intent. She describes the artist statement as a bridge, shares strategies for compelling art writing and says hallelujah and hurray for editors.
