In light of this week bringing us a holiday centered around feeling grateful and counting the many blessings in life, Mike sets the Thanksgiving table for Jay with a real cinematic turkey: ThanksKilling, a festive holiday offering filled with raunchy comedy and dime-store gore! More nap-inducing than tryptophan, but infinitely worse for one's health, Jay scarfs down helping after helping of the misadventures of a reanimated killer turkey before the guys move onto an inspired second course—their bottom five High Concept Films. This list of elevator pitches gone wrong is bound to leave a bad taste behind, so Mike and Jay add a bit of dessert by pitting four dinner-themed movies against each other in the most diverse game of Kick-Two, Pick Two ever! So shut off the football and put away that pumpkin pie because Filmjitsu is bringing you some Wild Turkey for dinner!

"High Concept" apparently means "really stupid and poorly thought out". Junior (1994) is a film that desperately tries to blend comedy, science fiction, and social commentary but ends up being a tedious and unenjoyable mess. Despite the star power of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito, and Emma Thompson, this movie falls flat in nearly every aspect, leaving the audience bored and disappointed. First and foremost, Junior is painfully boring. The premise of a man becoming pregnant, while initially intriguing, quickly loses its novelty. The plot drags on without any real momentum or excitement. Scenes that are meant to be humorous or touching instead feel forced and uninspired. The pacing is sluggish, and the film fails to maintain any level of engagement, making it a chore to sit through. Moreover, Junior manages to be offensively tone-deaf to the concept of motherhood. The film's portrayal of pregnancy and childbirth is shallow and insensitive, reducing these profound experiences to mere comedic fodder. The idea of a man experiencing pregnancy could have been an opportunity to explore gender roles and the challenges of motherhood with depth and respect. Instead, the film resorts to cheap jokes and superficial scenarios, trivializing the real struggles and emotions associated with pregnancy. The supposed comedy in Junior is another significant letdown. The humor is stale and predictable, relying heavily on tired stereotypes and physical gags. Schwarzenegger's attempts at delivering comedic lines are awkward and unconvincing, and even the usually reliable Danny DeVito seems to be going through the motions. Emma Thompson's character, while charming, cannot salvage the weak script and poorly executed jokes. The film fails to elicit genuine laughter, leaving viewers cringing rather than amused. In conclusion, Junior is a misguided attempt at comedy that misses the mark on multiple levels. It is boring, offensive to the concept of motherhood, and ultimately unfunny. Despite the talented cast, the film's lackluster execution and poor writing make it a forgettable and regrettable viewing experience. Save yourself the time and disappointment and give this movie a pass.
This time, a brace of movies starring the King of The High Concept, the man who starred as The Bigamist for Ida Lupino, a man who solves his own murder in DOA, and a man who must do battle with a serial killer and his own masculinity in The Hitch Hiker - Mr Edmond O'Brien! I'll tell you all about O'Brien's appearances in Columbia's first ever 3D movie, a noir mystery based on a Ralph Bellamy sci-fir classic, AND the brief but intriguing tale of a writer whose literary creation seems to have sprung to life from the page... Welcome to The Best of Binge Reading 2023, Part Two, the second and final of our shows featuring the most listened to episodes on our popular fiction podcast, chosen solely on the basis of the number of times you, our audience, listened to them. It goes without saying they're all best sellers, authors at the top of their game. There's something for everyone here, nerve wrenching contemporary thrillers from Ireland, to a French love story from a well loved TV actress; a World War II spy mystery by an Australian - set in the House of Dior in Paris, and a riveting journey into the world of the famous Mitford sisters, once acclaimed as London society beauties and then reviled as rotten traitors. We present brief excerpts from each show, with links for where to find them if you'd like to hear more... As in previous years, we've selected shows that aired between Dec 1, 2022 and Dec 1, 2023. So here they are – excerpts from the top six shows of 2023 on The Joys of Binge Reading. Twisty Thrillers - Catherine Ryan Howard Irish thriller author Catherine Ryan Howard with her latest nerve shredding suspense Runtime. Catherine Ryan Howard - Thriller author It's a book that was shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards Crime Fiction Book Of The Year, and is a Top 10 Kindle Best Seller. She been dubbed the Queen of High Concept thrillers for her intricate plotting which require a special excel spreadsheet... First up I asked her about her revelation that Runtime was inspired by her actor brother, John Ryan Howard. Jenny Wheeler: You've said that the original idea was inspired by your brother. Can you tell us about that connection? Catherine Ryan Howard: Yeah, he loves when I do interviews about this book because he gets a mention. So, he is an actor, and a few years ago he was in an independent Irish horror movie called Beyond the Woods. Of course, he was telling me all about the experience of being on set and one of the things he said, and in Beyond The Woods - if you read Runtime will sound very familiar because it was filmed in this house out in the middle of nowhere in the Cork countryside, in the dead of winter overnight. They were shooting everything at night, and he said one of the first things they did is the director had to go to the local police station and say, look, if someone calls you at four in the morning to say, ‘I hear screens, I think someone's getting murdered.' They're not. It's just us filming. And of course, being a crime writer, I immediately thought, what if it's someone getting murdered? That's a great cover story. You're giving yourself a bit of a bit of time to get away a head start. When I sat down to write the book, that idea went away and it turned into something else. Movie making is murder But that's the initial seed, and I loved the idea of there being a script for horror movie that when the actors go to film it, the same things that are happening in the script start to happen on the set, because of course your first question I think would be, is this really happening or is my director secretly filming me or something? It's hard to know what's real and what's not, and I think that's at the core of the novel. Jenny Wheeler: Yes, exactly. You do open with a scene where the director and an assistant go and knock on someone's door and say, ‘if you hear any screaming, don't worry.' And I immediately thought, oh, what a perfect cover for a crime. Exactly that. The story does show a very close understanding of the filming process, what happens on set, and all the different roles that there are in the production side of things. I wondered if you'd had any personal experience of that yourself. Catherine Ryan Howard: I really don't like, first of all, my brother was a great resource, of course, and I have a couple of other friends who'd be involved in the industry. So if there was something specific I wanted to know,

Alfred Hitchcock is one of American cinema's most daring risk-takers and experimenters. His filmmography is filled with wild experiments from single location movies like LIFEBOAT, ROPE, REAR WINDOW to rule breaking near avant garde stunners like PSYCHO and THE BIRDS. Today, Secret Movie Club founder.programmer Craig Hammill looks at 1948's ROPE (comprised of only 11 shots and filmed to look like one continuous take) and 1963's THE BIRDS (in which seemingly docile everyday birds attack a small Northern Californian town with little to no explanation). Craig marvels at ROPE's technique and THE BIRDS secondary, less talked about subtext about the chaos of lust and desire. We also repost SMC Pod #108 about the wonderful Spanish time travel movie TIME CRIMES and the low budget high concept feature.
In another double-header, Ross and Tripp tackle two largely forgotten 1999 high concept comedies. Spoiler alert: it is also the most contentious episode yet, and some of their opinions might be surprising! They also touch on the recent Brendan Fraser renaissance, late career Christopher Walken, the Jersey Shore, misogyny, and Tripp's high school choir tour. Plus, a new feature where Tripp tries to figure out what he was seeing instead of these films in 1999. Intro and Outro Music: So Alive (Instrumental) by Jon Worthy

Over the last decade, Dawn King has continued to excite theatregoers with intriguing works like Foxfinder, The Trials and her adaptation of Brave New World. Today, Dawn King is looking forward to Boundless Theatre's new production of her play: Addictive Beat, starring Fionn Whitehead and Boadicaa Ricketts. The show tells the story about two music-loving friends who create a beat that's euphoric and addictive. Set in the immersive space of the Dilston Gallery at Southwark Park, audiences can expect to find themselves enraptured by Boundless Theatre's production which also features brand new music by DJ Anikdote and an original score by Dom Coyote. In the interview, Dawn reveals that the idea for Addictive Beat had been around for a while and whilst the end product has changed from it's initial genesis, she's very excited for audiences to see her new work. It's been a great year for the playwright with The Trials also recently finishing a sold-out run at Donmar Warehouse, where she challenged her audience to think about their impact on the changing climate. In this special interview, Dawn King sits down to reflect on the past decade which has seen her plays presented across the world. We also get to hear her talk about her upcoming adaptation of The Cherry Orchard which she is developing with Katie Mitchell as well as her screen adaption of Foxfinder. She admits to being an unconventional playwright, often writing pieces that she deems "high-concept" where audiences leave asking themselves questions based on ideas from her text. Throughout the conversation, Dawn maintains a humble tone as she reminds us about the challenges of being a writer but still encourages aspiring playwrights to be tenacious and not give up on their dreams. It seems we can expect more to come from her in the years ahead and we look forward to what else she brings us in the future.Addictive Beat runs at Dilston Gallery, Southwark Park from 21st September - 7 October with tickets available from the Boundless Theatre website now!

On this week's Record Club, we are wrapping up our breakdown of the 2000s records of legendary prog band (and the most Jams & Tea-core artist there is) Porcupine Tree with a discussion and debate of the merits of their divisive 2009 concept record The Incident, fashioned as a 55-minute suite of 14 songs with an EP's worth of additional tracks tacked on. It's undeniably a messy record, but is it an underrated gem or a damp squib? Listen along to hear where the four of us fall, and let us know what YOU think at home! The Secret Movie Club Team (Connor Lloyd Crews, Edwin Gomez, Daniel Ott, and Craig Hammill) is joined by filmmaker Eva Doležalová to talk about Nacho Vigalondo's twisty two-million debut, Timecrimes (Los Cronocrímenes), and Eva's own experiences making her shorts Raven, Carte Blanche, and the upcoming Serpentine! Sci-fi seems to be the realm of high-concept low-budget greatness, with films like Coherence, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Melancholia, Shivers, and Cube; though Craig also brings up noir-riff Brick and horror-comedy Braindead. Connor expresses his admiration for M. Night Shyamalan. Edwin throws in Trainspotting to the mix. https://vimeo.com/evadolezalova https://rsafilms.com/us/directors/eva-dolezalova
There's something to be said for making a high-value podcast, which is why many continue year after year. But making a high-concept show can also be rewarding. Do you have time to make both? https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/making-high-concept-podcasts-on-a-high-value-budget Broadly speaking and missing a whole lot of nuance to make a point, podcasts are either news/talk or high-concept. We know listeners like to listen to both kinds of podcasts. But we also know most podcasters only produce one or the other. Is that because making a high-concept podcast is too difficult for most podcasters? I don't think soo. But I think it tends to be easier to make news/talk podcasts compared to high-concept shows. Can you do both? Probably. Your challenge will be keeping your high-value news/talk podcast train running as you devote the time necessary to make a new high-concept show. I have two tips to help you figure that out: 1. Think Big, Smart Small - You're taking the elephant-as-a-meal approach. You've probably lots of research and some things to learn. Prepare yourself for a nights-and-weekends project. Yes, 2. Think Differently - A lot of what you know about production, releasing, and promoting will need to change. The expectations for high-concept podcasts are quite different than what you've learned with your news/talk podcast. Give yourself room to figure those out. High-concept podcasting is not for everyone. But if you'd like to give it a shot, there's a lot you can borrow from your current high-value news/talk podcast. But plan on learning a few more tricks, so give yourself room to do that. And if you try your hand at making a high-concept podcast, be sure to let me know about it. I'd love to listen. ----- Links Looking for a remote recording solution that handles both audio and video? For today's review, The LaF Podcast races into the future to discuss George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road. This fourth installment of the Mad Max series may possibly be the best action movie of all time. A high-Octane, High-Speed, High-Concept thriller that delights and thrills its audience through its tight stunt choreography and incredible practical effects, this movie may be the overall winner of this year's Oscar Race, boasting 9 additional nominations including Best Director, Best Cinematography, Film editing, and Visual Effects. A virtuoso technical achievement, Fury Road stars Tom Hardy as the titular Max Rockatansky and contains an impressive physical acting performance by Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa, who may have reason to be even angrier than Max himself. Join the LaF Podcast as they ride along with Ripsaw Imperator, the Organic Mechanic, and the Doof-Warrior to "Fang it" down the Fury Road in pursuit of Furiosa's War Rig.
Heard about that farting corpse movie starring Daniel Radcliffe. Well, here are some other really weird movies.
Producer Jason Blum carved a niche in the movie business making low budget, high concept horror hits.
