There's no timeline for Hannah. Knowing her, she's forgotten it's even 1972. A cross-country trip that could have easily taken a week or two to complete has her on the road bouncing from place to place for a few months now. She rarely thinks about the man she shot and killed back home, and when he does cross her mind, there's no inkling of remorse. She'd tell you the gentleman had it coming, and he should have kept his hands off the boy. Little Ricky does, however, appear in her thoughts, and Hannah wonders if she truly set him free. The recollections force the talkative red-headed wanderer to ponder her own sense of freedom. Hannah would stop off at every exit if she could because she's constantly afraid she'll miss out on some unusual sight or a good story from a local. Of course, her idea of a good story is listening for a few seconds and then taking over the conversation for several minutes outside of a laundromat or greasy spoon. Sometimes she'll find temporary work in a small town long enough to acquire enough cash to move on to the next and eventually make it to the West Coast. About the time she makes a couple of friends who don't mind her taking over the discussion, she packs up what few clothes she owns and disappears. One boy asked Hannah to marry him after about three days a few hundred miles back east. It's not her fault men get lost in those deep aqua eyes and decide that popping the question is reasonable. She politely told the young man she's only interested in older gents but neglected to mention she'd turned down a guy ten years her senior several weeks before. She left him thinking younger bucks were more her speed. Hannah knows exactly what she's after, and it has nothing to do with male hormones leading a charge down the aisle anytime soon. When the time is right, she figures that her ideal mate will take time to peel back her layers, and she doesn't mean clothing. Hannah has her share of demons hopping around inside of her skull. She tells everyone she left home to pursue her dreams, but the reality is she simply decided to run. Folks do it every day, and it never takes long to figure out that fleeing yourself is next to impossible. Old thoughts and lingering poison flowing in and out of the heart rarely dissipate until they're faced head-on. Hannah takes pride in labeling herself a problem solver, and she's assisted more than one lost soul in her lifetime. But a reflection is quick to remind Hannah her greatest asset is also her most significant obstacle. Helping herself isn't part of her agenda for now, and hopefully, that epiphany won't strike her too late. For now, Hannah is happy listening to her John Denver eight-track over and over as she coasts down the interstate scoping out each exit, wondering if the stop holds her next adventure. She finds peace in providing long-winded answers to any stranger who'll hear her words. The solutions to her own questions drift further away with each passing second her foot presses the accelerator. If Hannah knew what to ask herself, she would have stayed home where she was supposed to be. Instead, she's caught somewhere on a long road chasing invisible goals that'll lead her to a familiar place a little too late. Then again, sometimes opportunity has a way of offering up a second chance to lost spirits like Hannah. Maybe she'll have a long conversation with the mirror before it's too late to go home.

Rum: is it still a sticky sweet pirate's drink or is there far more nuance to the spirit? On this episode, we're diving into the world of rum with Taylor Persh, head chef at Lost Spirit's restaurant Fish or Flesh and Jordan Fattal, bar director for Baldy's Restaurant Group, both rum lovers and have a bit more rum knowledge up both of their sleeves than we do. We tasted a wide range of the spirit with a lineup from Grander Rum, the love child of a native Kentucky whiskey drinker and a small rum distillery in Panama. Their lineup challenged what we thought the spirit was capable of with unique barrel aging and different aged blends. We ended with a big one two punch from Lost Spirits including their Navy Style Rum and a collaboration they did with Rational Spirits clocking in at 141 proof. The story and history of rum is a lot more complex and region specific than you may have imagined, so while we did indeed explore the classic tiki drink side to rum, we also dive into the influence of the European colonies and how their histories influence the types of rum we see today. One more interesting aspect to this podcast is the fact that we are in the middle of the coronavirus quarantine which is strongly and uniquely affecting the service industry. We talk Taylor and Jordan about what is happening in the hospitality industry, their hopes, their fears, and how we are emotionally handling this period in history.    Click on any of the following links to purchase the spirits. Equal Parts - A Bartending Podcast About Cocktails

The guys talk about Lost Spirits Distillery in downtown Los Angeles after Ben toured the facility. Surprisingly clear minded, Ben discusses how Lost Spirits recreates forgotten and of course, lost, spirits. Sometimes making a what tastes like a twenty year old rye and produced in one week, using flash aging, essentially using light and sound to rapidly age spirits, utilizing scientific equipment to mimic traditional spirits. It sounds like a gimmick, but it’s also really good. What do you think? For today, we discuss the Trinidad Sour. You’ll need Angostura bitters, orgeat, fresh lemon juice and your favorite rye whiskey! A modern classic! It has a unique identity because there is nothing like it. Invented by Guiseppe Gonzalez, a well traveled modern legend in the bar world, from Clover Club, and now in Las Vegas at Herbs and Rye. It’s a different take on cocktails, taking an essential ingredient for cocktails and making it the base of there drink, the star of the show is Angostura bitters. It’s high proof and can carry a drink! Blind taste it with amaro and you might not know the difference at first. Typically a catalyst for blending flavors, bitters are like salt and pepper, the seasoning of drinks. For our home bartenders, the source for the recipe comes from Difford’s guide: an ounce and a half of angostura bitters, half ounce of your favorite rye, maybe Rittenhouse Rye, wink wink, a full ounce of orgeat, an almond syrup, and three quarter ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice. Don’t forget your ice, shake it up, then pour it into a coup. You’ll drink this up, with no ice. Kim learned to use one ounce instead of Ben’s ounce and a half, so maybe to taste is the best way to go. The spiciness of the bitters with the rye, contrasted with the bold orgeat flavor, the juxtaposition is a perfect pairing. This is a disruptor type of cocktail. The name is in reference to the bitters, made in Trinidad & Topango, the Angostura bitters is a classic ingredient. A four ingredient cocktail, simple and beautiful.

When you hear the name Ghostbusters, you probably immediately think of the movie. In the realm of cosplay, it is a group of people who have formed an alliance to do good in the community and have fun in the process. We met Ellery Christensen, a ghost cadet who is part of the Ghostbusters: Lost Spirits Division, one of 2 groups based in the Tampa Bay area. She became a member because of her love of the movie and through friends. She started out as a photographer for it and is now a participant. This group of happy people is one of several groups in the area that, put together, would number over 75. Their goal is to spread joy and fun to charities, school groups, hospitals or fundraisers in the area. The group works with an organization called Cosplay for a Cause to find local events to participate in. When they are at the con, they wander around meeting the people and particularly children. At this event one of the games they play with them is a card game that tries to test their "psychic ability." When they go out into the community, they make appearances in hospitals to cheer up the sick children. Their visits at schools are a lot of fun, and children wherever they go are fascinated by the Proton packs on their backs. These packs can weigh 40 pounds and can cost up to $1,600.00. Needless to say they are glad when it is time to take them off! There are people who have even named theirs. This group of wonderful people are having such a good time being together and sharing their fun. Their main goal is to add a level of enjoyment to these events for kids of all ages. Today we’re going to talk about alcohol, more specifically distilling spirits like rum and whiskey. Most award winning whiskey and rum are aged in barrels of different types of wood, for many years, but what if there was a way to create the same effect, in a fraction of the time. At Lost Spirits they have figured out how to do just that. Nestled in Downtown LA they are creating new types of booze and even resurrecting lost ones and the process takes… 6 days (more on that later). Not only are the distilling exciting types of alcohol, they have also created a tasting experience around it. Bringing together science, technology, and art - that has an Island of Dr. Moreau vibe… and a boat ride… in the middle of Downtown Los Angeles. My guest this week is Bryan Davis, inventor, co-founder, and booze formula developer at Lost Spirits, we talk about how you can take a process that takes 30 years and... distill... it down to 6 days, creating a alcohol theme park, but first, the history of Lost Spirits. Lost Spirits Distillery has what is perhaps one of the most interesting stories in craft distilling today. Bryan Davis has been tinkering with funky ways to age spirits since 2010, when he started Lost Spirits in the middle of an artichoke field out here in California. Four years and a heck of a lot of innovation later, Lost Spirits has a one-of-a-kind distillery/tasting room in the heart of Los Angeles, and Bryan is still tinkering, making waves with his various aging experiments. In our second episode of One Nation Under Whisky, Joshua and Jason get a little long in the tooth as they have a fine discussion about some serious whisky and rum geekery! The boys also discuss some misconceptions around age and are excited to share details regarding a July 2017 Islay tour that WhiskyGeek Tours is putting together in conjunction with The Explorer's Club and National Geographic. Special thanks to: Weigh Down for allowing us to use their song "Wooden Monsters" as our theme song Moana McAuliffe for designing our Podcast Logo Blue Yeti for making great microphones Olympus and Tascam for making fine mobile recording devices Joshua Hatton for producing and editing

This week's episode comes from Frankfurt, Germany...during a layover on my trip to visit the Amrut Distillery in Bangalore, India. However, we're focusing on a rare  breed of whisky this week...the Peated American Single Malt. There are very few examples of this rare breed, one being Leviathan from Lost Spirits Distillery on California's Monterey Peninsula. Bryan Davis of Lost Spirits explains his reasons for producing a highly-peated single malt in this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Dewar's enters the flavored whisky market, Highland Park unleashes the shape-shifting Loki on the whisky world, and Scottish officials consider reviving the old Dallas Dhu Distillery in Speyside as a working distillery as well as a museum.
